Been here several times over the years and always had a pleasant experience, but today reminded me of the power of INCREDIBLE service in turning a bad day into a good one. I twisted my ankle really badly on a curb a block away from this establishment, and came in limping and embarrassed. The staff could not have been nicer! One particular employee, whose name I am ashamed to say I didn't get, put together a waterproof bag of ice, and checked in with my wife whenever he thought I might need a fresh one. But truly everyone was so kind and thoughtful, and the delicious buffalo cauliflower was the cherry on top. read more

Great restaurant. The back area you're sitting outside with a giant tree. It's beautiful. The waitress was wonderful. The food was great and well priced. Love this place and would definitely come back. It's also very cool and very pretty here cuz it looks like the inside of a barrel of beer I guess. All this to say I don't actually drink alcohol so I don't know how the beer was but the food was great. read more

Looks can be deceiving... I've driven by this place many of times before and never made a trip to try it out. Finally, might as well try it out for brunch. Which I didn't even know they had. Just from the outside, it just looks like a local neighborhood dive bar. Tables outside which never seemed to have anyone utilizing it when I drive by. It's all street parking along the main strip and residential. And it's a conversational building as it does stand out, a massive barrel.... When we walked it, took us by surprise as it was happening. There's a patio with a band playing and plenty of people. Completely different from the front. It was a bit odd as well when we walked in. Don't know if it was security, a hostess or a waiter. We asked, do we seat ourselves, is it walk in or what. He was playing his Nintendo switch or whatever it's called. He took us to a table which a long communal table set up had a reservation sign. Theres a couple tables near the band which was all empty but wasn't allowed there. Beside that, there was inside seating but we found a table. Did noticed that about 15 min later, 2 girls walked in and asked for the table by the band and they were given them. Well, brunch menu is limited but what is worth it was the bottomless mimosas. For the price, it was well the trip. I believe you have to have a meal with it, not sure. But regardless, it was great. We had the burger and chicken and waffles. Burger was actually pretty good with the side of tots. Chicken and waffles, it was ok. Staff was excellent, they were all friendly and very approachable. Someone that you could juts strike a conversation with. The band was great. Great choice with all the song. Overall, would come back. Service was great, friendly staff. Just a tad off when we walked it but beside that, everything was great. read more

Now I know what the Barrel is about! First time here and may not be my last. It's a great spot for parties and group settings. Two bars, lots of seating outdoor, and it looks like a cool hut in the back. Great service considering how busy it gets - people are friendly here and so are the customers! Food is bar food, and so it's good for bar food but it's nothing spectacular. They have a decent amount of options for you, and are down to modify. read more

I have come to Idle Hour a few times over the years with small groups of friends and sat in a different area each time. They have both indoor and outdoor (front and back) seating. My preference is for the inside of the barrel. It feels unique, warm and intimate. The food is decent and drinks are good (I have had wine and various cocktails). Easy nearby parking. read more

A very fun themed bar that has great ambiance and lots of tables. I've never been to a bar shaped like a barrel before, or one with a giant dog holding a pipe so it was a special experience. We came here to celebrate our friend's birthday and were able to find a table towards the back in the outdoor area. There are two bars, the one at the front gets pretty congested so I recommend ordering from the one in the back. Service is fantastic - we realized halfway through that we had forgotten birthday candles so I went to the bartender to ask if they had any extra that they could put on a cookie. This bartender is the best - didn't catch his name but he has curly hair and glasses and was absolutely so fantastic. He gave us a cookie with ice cream and candles so we could sing happy birthday and didn't even charge us for it. It was something that made the birthday girl feel extra special and we all appreciated the kind gesture very much! I definitely recommend coming here, it's a fun place and there's lots of seating and tables. Gets a little loud but it's a warm atmosphere where you know everyone is having a good time. read more

It is great to be back without the mask. Yay!!! I invited my SO and my girlfriend for Happy Hour. Upon entering, we can tell that the place is getting packed at 4pm. Wow!! Service: the first time we were here, servers took our orders and brought it to the table. This time, we have to go to the bar to order then the bartender gives you a number. Jeez, it interrupts your conversations. At 4:30, servers are around, checking tables and dishing out empty plates and glasses. We wanted a refill and order more food but the server said we have to go to the bar. Huh!!! Food: we ordered Flatbread Pizza, Chicken Tenders, Onion Rings and Buffalo Cauliflower. All Recommended. Tasty, delicious, and affordable. Drinks: my girlfriend and I ordered Paloma. I love it! It is strong, bold, and beautiful. It gives you a kick on the first sip. Long Island Tea for my SO. It's okay. Plenty of different alcohol in it but not for me. Parking: tricky. There are metered street parking but It gets full. So we circled a few times before we were able to find one. We had fun!! We will definitely come back and get a table on the patio when the weather is favorable. read more

If you live in LA and haven't been....Idle Hour is the place in NoHo that's shaped like a barrel. LOL It's so cool! Been coming here for a few years now after driving by it for several years. So glad I decided to check it out. But yeah it's shaped like a barrel inside and out. Indoor seating is circled around the barrel with tables and banquets. Bar area has high tops. As cool as it is inside we like sitting on the back patio. It's like a little oasis back there. Picnic tables, 4 tops and high tops surrounding one huge tree that offers protection from the afternoon sun. Cooler months they have outdoor heaters of course and the summers misters. Love that for us. The food is okay. I haven't had anything mind blowing but I do love that they have a few vegan options. As far as drinks I usually stick with wine but sipping from cocktails my husband has had they're pretty tasty. Service is great. Friendly and welcoming...and they'll remember you! We hadn't been in a few months and one of the servers mentioned he hadn't seen us in awhile...and it's not like we go that often. That's pretty cool in my book! Parking isn't too difficult. We can usually find something out front if not at least around the corner. If you're looking for someplace to grab a drink and some nosh with friends definitely check them out. read more

Parking was easy there's lots of parking on the street. Security and bar tenders were very nice and elevated the experience. Interior and bathroom was beautiful and clean. The vibe of the bar was great. However, didn't like how the two different beers I got were warm making it unpleasant to drink. Also, there was a screaming transient in front which was very scary. I will NEVER. Come back to this place. I drove 3 hours to be apart of this environment. I am and have been a sever. I felt so unseen and it was / is my birthday this Monday. I tried to call to make a reservation and they said they don't make reservations more than five at a time so [[HIGHLIGHT]]when I got there for my birthday after driving three hours, they sat me on a seat where I could barely see the view with all of my friends[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] after traveling three hours and I tried to call back and let them know how disappointed I was and they said basically the same thing which is they don't make reservations for more than that and good for you guys but also sucks with the other people that have birthdays. This place has been around for as long as I can remember, and I've been in LA for quite a while. I'm not sure if it was always called the Idle Hour, but I've passed by the "barrel" building for years without stopping in. Finally, I decided it was time to check it out. Walking in felt a bit strange; I didn't find the interior very appealing. However, the outdoor garden area is what truly enhances the experience. The food is decent, though somewhat pricey. Stumbled upon this bar trying to search for a cool spot near the restaurant we left. This was such a perfect gem! Great music. Happy hour on a Saturday from 1-6pm . Which blew our minds , where on earth can you find happy hour on the weekend?!! Drinks were roughly $6/$7 depending on what you order . Had the Paloma , which they had on "draft " ..right ?!? And it was pretty good. Couldn't resist ordering more Let's just say , my family kept the party going lol. The Idle hour has such a great vibe and super nice staff. Definitely worth it! Idle Hour has become my favorite North Hollywood spot. The vibe is unmatched, and I love enjoying the beautiful patio and live music during Sunday Brunch. Their brunch food is really good, especially the chicken and waffles. The coffee options are limited with regular coffee and I believe nitro brew, which is perfect for me. Portions are a reasonable size but not huge, I recommend ordering an extra side or two for the table. They bring out the food as it's ready, which can be frustrating for larger groups. The service is all very friendly but can take a while since they are managing a lot with the bar, indoor and outdoor seating. read more

Didn't know what to expect based on the outside but was pleasantly surprised at how cute the inside seating area was! They also had a solid happy hour with great prices. We got the pretzel which was more fluffy than pretzel. The cheese to pretzel ratio was a little off but our server was kind enough to give us more cheese. read more

A very pleasant surprise and I'm happy we took a chance on it!!! Came here with a friend who heard great things about this place - we were definitely amazed! They have a great happy hour menu, it's got indoor and outdoor seating, great service, PET FRIENDLY, and good vibes all around. It definitely stands out because you have a random barrel in the middle of NoHo! What blew us away was the ambiance of it all. Walked in and it's your typical bar setup but once you walk past that and into their outdoor seating in a huge patio, it feels like you're in a different place. There's little I love more in life than a finely crafted old fashioned, and Idle Hour did not disappoint. Old Forester 100 Proof bourbon, Demerara syrup, bitters. Simple, but perfect. Idle Hour is an iconic North Hollywood/Toluca Lake staple -- "The Barrel" is one of my favorite local watering holes. Given the spacious layout, terrific cocktails/mocktails and beer list, and always-delicious food, it was a no-brainer to host my recent birthday party there. Chad, the manager, made it effortless to reserve space ahead of time -- just email him! -- and the staff (always incredible) were extra fun! We had a big group, and the bar was pretty full, but the service was as quick and reliable as ever. Bonus points for the music playlist, so many fun and funny throwback hits! Some friends and I stopped here for brunch on a Saturday. Shortly after they opened, it was quiet for the first hour but got busy around noon when the band started. Nice ambiance and decent food. But the service was really slow. My husband's breakfast burrito was forgotten so all of us but him received our meals. We tried to wait but after 15 min, decided to eat. Eventually a server (not ours) came by and asked if he'd ordered anything and he told her the burrito. She went and checked, returning to say sorry that his was not ordered and she fixed it. His food came out about 10 min later, by which point we were all well past done. No one ever came back to take our next round of drink orders. I went up and asked for the check. It was busy but not that busy. Not sure we thought the food was good enough to return considering the slow service. read more

Came here with some old friends, did NOT expect this place to be as spacious and lively as it was. Sat down near the back as my friend reserved a table and went to the bar and ordered drinks, bar tender was super friendly, knowledgeable and was patient as I asked a couple questions. Took a while to put a food order in but once we did I believe it was the chef that was very charismatic and recommended some great food suggestions. I ordered wings, they were super crispy and the buffalo sauce was amazing. They even had us try a couple slices of pizza on the house. I will definitely be coming back with friends, overall just such a fun experience. read more

Established in 2015.

In 1941, Idle Hour's barrel-shaped taproom derived as part of the "Programmatic architecture" movement, which was a direct link to the rise of the automobile when business owners in the 20's and 30's designed their buildings to catch the attention of quick passing motorists. Idle Hour achieved landmark status in 2011, and after a three-year restoration, it is one of the last standing structures of this type in Los Angeles. Idle Hour serves Americana cocktails and fare that are a definitive time stamp reflective of its original era.

It remains a unique addition to the neighborhood, as well as a good place to grab some interesting dishes. Since the opening of this particular business, the Zinc chain has opened in a few other locations. Those locations are much newer in not only their establishment but their design. This is not to say that this is still not an interesting, well-designed business, but, with time, it has become a little bit rundown. I hate to say it, but that is the truth. This location could really use an update and perhaps a deep cleaning. I was, in fact, kind of surprised at the condition of this business, for example, on the way towards their restrooms. From my opinion, it needs an clean up and an update. Also, the litter that surrounded some of the outdoor tables where I was sitting at my most recent visit was very surprising. This is just something to keep in mind if you're coming here for your first visit. In terms of what they offer for food, though it has evolved a bit over the years, they still have a great, heath-based menu, with some very interesting choices. For all of you vegetarians and vegans out there, you will, for sure, be able to find some tasty food to eat. Once upon a time, this restaurant was impacted with tons and tons of people. It was constantly full with people either going to the bakery and/or sitting down for table service. Shortly past their opening each day, there would be a line of people waiting for service. We started with coffee. My boyfriend ordered a mocha, and I ordered a salted caramel latte. His drink was fine, but mine had absolutely no flavoring. As a former barista, I could immediately tell it was just a plain iced latte. I politely asked the waitress if they had forgotten the syrup, and she insisted, "There is syrup in it, but I can ask them to add more." I knew there wasn't any syrup, but I didn't want to argue, so I said, "Sure, please add more." A few minutes later, the manager came over and told me they actually didn't have salted caramel. So I asked if I could just get a regular caramel latte instead. She then told me they couldn't make that either because they were out of caramel sauce, the very reason they couldn't make the salted caramel in the first place. So why hand me a plain iced latte and tell me it had syrup when you knew you didn't even have the ingredients? Why not simply come back and let me know you were out and ask if I'd like something else? Instead, I was given a regular latte at the price of a flavored one (plus they later charged me for the syrup they never even added). For context, I had originally ordered a dirty chai, which they also couldn't make. So that's two drinks they didn't have, yet no one thought to communicate that before serving me something completely different. When I told the manager I'd look back at the menu for another option, she responded, "Okay... are you going to tell the waitress what drink you want?" I just looked at her, confused, and said, "Well... yeah?" How else was I supposed to order a replacement? The interaction came across as unnecessarily rude. Then it was time to order food. My boyfriend ordered the truffle burger, and I ordered the French toast. The waitress came back a few minutes later and said they couldn't make the French toast. No problem, I told her I'd also have the truffle burger. She acknowledged it, wrote it down, asked how I wanted it cooked, and what side I wanted. I ordered it medium-well with fries. So both burger orders were sent in at the same time. About 20 minutes later, the food arrived, but only my boyfriend's burger and an extra side of fries that we never ordered. At that point, we didn't even bother saying anything about the fries because we were trying to avoid making things more difficult. We waited another 20 minutes (even though it was so slow). My boyfriend finished eating, and my burger still hadn't come out. Finally, we asked for the check and requested that my burger be removed since it never arrived. That's when the waitress told us I had never ordered a second burger. I was honestly speechless. I reminded her that she had taken my order after telling me they couldn't make the French toast. She had written it down, asked how I wanted it cooked, and asked what side I wanted. Her response was that she thought I meant only my boyfriend's burger. That explanation made no sense because my boyfriend's order had already been taken before she took mine. It honestly felt like we were being gaslit over something as simple as ordering a burger. To make matters worse, after we paid and were finally leaving, I looked at the receipt and realized I had been charged for the salted caramel latte that I never actually received. We had to go back yet again. Thankfully, a different employee, not the waitress or the manager helped us. They were friendly, understanding, and quickly corrected the charge. I'm not sure if management has changed, but this entire experience was unnecessarily frustrating from beginning to end. Everything that could have gone wrong did. Honestly, I should've taken the "B" health grade posted on the window as a warning. We ended up walking over to Blue Bottle next door for coffee instead, and I'd absolutely recommend going there if you're looking for a place that actually values customer service. After four years of coming to Zinc, this experience has me seriously questioning whether I'll ever be back.

When we asked for utensils they didn't have any forks so they gave us one spoon and one knife. We made it work. Finally made it to this HOT (both in popularity and live-fire cooking) spot in Glassell Park just…read moreoff the 2 freeway. Apparently they've been open about 3 years, but all the buzz, accolades and crowds seem more recent than that. Reservations can be tough to secure, but recommended. We had a 5:30 opening time res, and I was quite surprised by the length of the separate line for walk-ins. But it appears they all made it in. Their next-door bar only seats walk-ins. Restaurant guests can wait here, but they also have a limited menu that includes several of the popular dishes (like the cornbread) and also a bar-only hangar steak, which replaced the highly lauded bar-only burger. Eagle Rock Blvd is a wide multi-lane street with a center median/parkway. The restaurant has a valet; street parking can be difficult as there are homes and apartments on the side streets. Eagle Rock Blvd has some parking, but across the blvd is FAR and hazardous to cross. A better bet is Bushwick St. behind the restaurant. There aren't a whole lot of businesses nearby, but on Dunsmoor's block there's a bar (The Grant) and a breakfast/lunch/bakery spot (Bub & Grandma's) where Dunsmoor gets their bread. Dunsmoor's Spanish Revival corner space is impressive and lovely. Chef-owner Brian Dunsmoor grew up in Georgia, but the cuisine here is "American Heritage" with definite Southern touches and of course California's abundant purveyors/farms. The menu seems highly seasonal and earthy; I doubt they use tweezers to plate the food here! The space has individual 2-top tables along 2 sides, the middle of the space has 3 long communal tables. There's counter seating right in front of the open fire (great view but hot) and a few more to the right. The fire is a further distance away from counter guests here vs. the spacing at Betsy in Altadena, another live-fire spot. Dunsmoor also has a back kitchen where non-fire dishes are done. We ordered a lot: 1) House Meyer lemonade. Dunsmoor's spirit-free beverage selection is limited. but the lemonade was great, sparkly. Their wine list is pretty large. 2) Chopped chicken liver with bacon, rosemary, onion preserves. Served with bread from Bub & Grandma's. Delish. The thought the rosemary would be overpowering but it wasn't. 3) Edna's sour milk cornbread. Pretty much seen on every table. Cheddar and Hatch chiles flecked through the bread, topped with a mound of melting cultured butter and honey cascading like waterfalls over the sides. A must order. Not spicy at all, thankfully. 4) Regier Farms yellow peaches with farmers cheese, different basils and olive oil. Summer on a plate! The peaches were exquisite. Clearly a seasonal dish. 5) Carolina Gold rice with shrimp and corn. A delish cross between risotto and grits. There was lots of cheese too. An ode to the South. 6) Aunt Emmy's pork and green chili stew. Another top-seller. Homey and substantial, with a slight kick and fabulous house-made tortillas. 7) Beef ribeye with smoked bone marrow and sea salt. Definitely shareable, it's prepared medium rare unless otherwise told. Our slice had a bit of gristle, but it was well prepared. We placed the smoky-rich marrow on top of the steak as recommended. The sea salt was not needed. Would love to try the pork chop and duck someday. 8) Sliced Cherokee tomatoes, simply dressed with apple vinegar, olive oil and sea salt. Another winning seasonal dish. The also have a tomato Caesar dish with more ingredients. 9) Sticky date pudding. Well done moist version of a classic, served in a cast iron dish with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. Would have loved to try the seasonal stone fruit and blackberry cobbler and the hand-churned ice cream, which on this night was cantaloupe! Overall an excellent and substantial meal. Unlike some past reviews, the service was fine and very friendly. I enjoy a Michelin-starred fancy tasting menu (where they use tweezers to plate) every so often, but a hearty, rib-sticking but upscale meal like this is also great.

And for a main, we got the chicken schnitzel. Everything was well presented and full of flavor. I don't think I disliked any of the dishes.
