I went here for brunch with my friends and had a great time! Food, service, and ambiance were all excellent. The building itself is cool. The exterior is shaped like a giant barrel and you can't miss it as you drive down the street. It's got plenty of space and seating with an outdoor patio in the back as well. In the outdoor patio, there's also a large unique structure shaped like a bulldog that I really liked. Starting off, I had arrived earlier than my friends but the server let me get seated while waiting. We chose this place because we wanted to experience their drag brunch but accidentally went on the wrong day. That's okay though because they still had a live band for entertainment, which added to the good vibes all around! I ordered the crispy chicken and waffles with spicy maple syrup, while my friends ordered the carnival cakes and the potato and zucchini latkes. We all devoured our food so no complaints there! For my chicken and waffles, it came with a hefty portion of chicken tenders that were juicy and crispy and a thick waffle that wasn't too sweet. The sweetness came from the spicy maple syrup (which wasn't spicy in my option) and everything together made a nice savory-sweet combo that left me full and satisfied. My only gripe would be the parking as it seemed like there was only very limited street parking, but I would happily come back for both the food and so I can finally experience drag brunch! read more

Seen this place driving by. Hard not to unless you're blind or you're busy focusing on the road, like I probably should have been. Finally made it here both before and after the show at Zombie Joe's Underground. Wanted to eat before the show. Then ended back with friends after the show. I enjoyed the vibe. The music. The staff. The crowd. The drinks. I was not a fan of the food though. See pics. You may or not be able to tell, but the creamy Mac and Cheese was not creamy. It was runny. It didn't taste horrible. The consistency was just not my cup of tea. Ate about half and left the rest. You can't tell from the pic again - but the chicken wings were dry for my taste. Again, taste was ok. Just dry. I did enjoy the drinks and the drink specials. Both visits. Had beer. Cocktails. And a shot of whiskey. The cocktail was the Old Fashioned and it was nicely balanced. Someone even tried to clear my glass before I was done sucking on the ice to get every last ounce from the glass. As for the parking - if you know the area, you know it's street parking. I had parked closer to the venue I was attending but it wasn't a far walk. Parking was free on a Saturday evening. Great food. Wonderful service. A giant dog with a pipe on the patio. North Hollywood is the perfect location for this kitschy bar and restaurant that looks like a barrel from the road. Horrible. I've never written a review while still at the restaurant before but the food is inedible so I really have nothing else to do while I'm waiting for my partner. Been here many times and it was always fine but today was a cluster f-ck. Packed for Disney trivia night. No waiter you just have to order on the QR code and pay and then some surly food runners just randomly drop things off. Orders were all wrong, burned, no silverware, no condiments, no napkins, nobody to ask for any of the above either. My partner ordered (and paid extra for) a gluten free bun, and received no bun. My chicken was literally inedible. Can't order soda on the app just booze. Had to go up to the bar seperately to get a drink. I don't see how this is working for anyone but after having spent $60 for two of the shittiest meals I've ever had I sure won't be back. Hope they made enough money off everyone tonight to make up for the lost business. Do better. PS. Oh let me add that there is at least one waiter, dressed like Hercules for some reason. There are probably 80 tables. He randomly selects which table he will wait on. If he chooses yours, you actually have a waiter, who, since he wants a tip, takes full responsibility for your table and your food. But if you're not one of the lucky 5 or 10 tables he chooses, you're basically just on your own. Not even anyone to clear your dishes when you're done. This is a dive bar pretending to be a hipster place - don't expect anything beyond the basics or any interesting mixed drinks - they don't have a blender or any fresh mint for a mojito. Wine choices are a bit limited. Place could use a good clean and more seating. Food is sub par. It's fine if you are a bar fly, probably not the best place to go for a date or out with more selective friends. Been driving past this place for eons and always wondered what they actually served here?! Well, today was the day! Thanks to Yelp, it popped up in my search bar when I put in "happy hour" in my general area:). First off, I love the structural design of the front. Almost reminds me of a "fairytale" like place. Maybe a hobbit lives inside like "Bilbo Baggins or Frodo & Sam?" Nope... Once you open up the "hobbit" like door it transforms you into a large open area with a bar and lots of tables. Keep walking if you want to sit amongst the trees in the Shire like patio. And let's not forget the dog like hut from the film "The Rocketeer." Bottom line: LOVED THIS PLACE! We came here for lunch 1/7/23 (since we were too late for our reservation at another place, we had to scramble for a place to eat). I found this place under my bookmarks and called, the gal on the phone was so friendly and told us to come on in! I book marked this place a while back because I love the history and the look of it. And the food and vibe looked like my kind of place! We came and I'm so glad we did! The place is super cute and clean. Totally unique and fun. The staff is so nice and friendly and helpful. I liked how we order at the bar and they bring the food to you. My drink was good it was the spicey mango (I forget) but it was yum. We also got buffalo cauliflower and onion rings and a salad and my lover got the barrel burger. Everything was hot, fresh and full of flavor. We will definitely come back again. As much as I don't drink, this place is actually one of the cooler bars to hit up in North Hollywood. Their happy hour is awesome and features $7 drinks and bites. Can't go wrong with a $7 mule in LA. The chicken bites are also really good and you can order them "extra crispy". This was the worst philly cheese stake sandwich I have ever had. Honestly if I wasn't there with a bunch of friends for a birthday I would have refused to eat this and ordered something else but I didn't want to make a scene. The steak was thin and dry, even a little burnt and crunchy in parts. The cheese was baked onto the bread (so dry). There were no onions or bell peppers like I'm used to getting on a Philly, no sauce, the bread was crunchy which I might have liked if everything else wasn't so dry inside. And if that wasn't bad enough this thing cost twice as much as any other Philly I've bought in the past. My girlfriend got vegan nachos which were pretty lame. There was supposed to be 2 kinds of vegan cheese but we only saw 1 and it was cold crumbly cheese that fell off the chips when you picked them up. There was also pico de gallo and sliced jalapenos. Here's to weekend happy hours! (Few and far between in L.A.) We had the best time here last night, thanks largely in part to proprietor Chad, who was so hospitable and friendly. The happy hour here is incredible, probably one of the better deals I've seen here in L.A. The amount of food and drinks my friend and I got for roughly $40 was astounding -- especially on a Saturday night. Not on the happy hour menu but worth getting are the cauliflower buffalo bites. Melt-in-your-mouth good is an understatement with these ... I've never had any like them before. The atmosphere of the place is great, too. So cozy inside. But bring layers if you're eating outside. Lived in the area for a while so we finally got the chance to stop by and try out Idle Hour. Bartender was very friendly and welcoming. We ordered a Paloma and Old Fashioned. The Paloma was made very fast and tasted good. The Old Fashioned had a stronger whiskey flavor. For food we ordered the Homeboy Pretzel which tasted like it was frozen and reheated. The pizza was lacking in flavor, greasy and wasn't to our liking so we ended up leaving after our drinks. As far as the actual bar? It's an interesting place that feels like a niche neighborhood bar. Tables could've used a wipe down. We visited shortly after opening and there wasn't many people there so maybe they hadn't gotten to it yet. Dogs were allowed on the patio. Service? This is my issue at Idle Hour! Can't remember pre pandemic but nowadays you have to order at the bar, get a number and they bring your food to the table (sometimes too fast). But no issues here, folks who work here are nice and I am perfectly capable to get my own water. So, why have a lady walk around, supervise you while you're eating? Grab a plate like a vulture the minute you finished your food? Interrupt your conversation and not allow me enjoy my Paloma? Because I feel watched and it's not my idea of an enjoyable meal out. Even more, a couple of months back she grabbed my unfinished Paloma even if my husband told her I might not be done with it. She said "it looks done to me!". Well, it wasn't, still had some and I didn't appreciate it. It never happened to me before anywhere, it makes eating here more tense, like you have to watch your food and drinks. It's almost like they want you out immediately even if there is plenty of seating! So management needs to do better. Idle Hour is such a fun place to get together with friends. It's a unique environment with all around good vibes. Drinks are good and I particularly love their house made ginger beer. Definitely worth coming early for Happy Hour to get $7 drinks and bites. I went with a group of friends and we tried a little bit of everything. - Mac n Cheese bites (Flavorful, great dipped in ranch, held together surprisingly well) - Nachos with beef (Really good nachos, not worth it to add plain ground beef for $5 though) - Buffalo Cauliflower (tasty, but a fairly small portion) - Pretzel (Just pretzel shaped bread, but it was warm and soft so not bad) - Burger (Impressive burger, very flavorful!) - Tater tots were top tier, sweet potato fries were great, regular fries were not as good when compared to the other two.  We stayed for trivia on a Tuesday which ran from about 8-10:15PM. It was a great challenge and a very energetic group.  All in all, I really enjoy Idle Hour. But I was pretty surprised they add an automatic 20% gratuity to tabs over $100. Idle hour has become one of our go-to spots, especially during happy hour, which is everyday 3-6pm (except Saturdays which are from 1-6pm). Recent reviews seem to be conflicting but we've been here several times and have always left pleased with the food and service! It's a pretty casual spot with a nice selection of beers on tap (other drinks as well) and food at a good value. We've primarily been for happy hour so can't speak for all their food items but the following have been quite tasty: - chips that come with an option of queso or roasted salsa (both good but I prefer the refreshing salsa) - homeboy bakery pretzel (comes out hot!) that tastes like an in between of a regular pretzel and focaccia bread. I prefer eating it with mustard over the queso - pulled pork sliders that come with a decent amount of meat and sauce I really like the ambiance here so I know I'll definitely be back! After looking at their pictures and menu I was very excited to come here with some family. The gluten free bun is really what drove me in and the appearance of the building. Unfortunately I believe I had the wrong idea about the kind of service that was provided here. When we went through the door we were greeted by a bouncer/host that was on his phone. I will say he was polite once he did get off the phone though. He asked if we were drinking or eating and gave us menus and directed us to go to the back and a server would be with us. We picked a table and sat where he told us a server would come by, but no one ever did. So we ended up having to order from the bar. The drinks were a tad underwhelming. They didn't stand out and the liquor was over shadowed by the simple simple syrups and what seemed like not fresh juices. The food was okay but really the gluten free bun was the biggest highlight. For me the biggest thing that was a turn off though is the cleanliness. The menus had food piled all over them only on the edges where peoples hands hold them. The tables were very dirty and the over hygiene of the restaurant seemed poor which was very unfortunate. Hope this helps. Upon arrival there was a rude ass security guard who looked at me and my friends and didn't let us in because he assumed my friend was blacked out. I went in for only water and to have a good time. Idle Hour has great atmosphere, and a great happy hour... yes, I had wings for dinner... don't judge me! ;) The drinks were not spectacular for the prices they were charging but Chad went above and beyond to get our order, chat with us like we were old time friends, no rush, and recommended great apps. Food arrived promptly, and was good for a bar during happy hour. Drinks need work... they tasted like the bartender was on strike. This is the first time I have eaten here. I have ordered food in the past and taken it to go but I came for trivia tonight. The only bad thing I can really say is that the lighting is not conducive for great food pics. I knew I really enjoyed the fried portobello fries with the garlic aioli. Fresh out of the fryer with the slight saltiness from the Parmesan cheese and the creaminess from the aioli, they are sure to please. I followed them up with the crispy grilled cheese sandwich. It's busting with cheese on the inside and outside. The side salad was really good, I was surprised that it came with balsamic and the blue cheese I had ordered. The two dressing actually tasted really good together. I finished up my meal with the Nutella chocolate layer cake. I really enjoyed the richness and the layers of different textures. I wish the slice was bigger but I did enjoy it. I would suggest these over the donuts. I think for me I would have enjoyed the donuts better if they were filled. Driven by this "giant barrel" for years and we finally decided to stop in for happy hour! OMG! Glad we finally did stop! I had the Paloma (it's better than a margarita btw), my husband had (2 drinks) a triple mai tai (ooooh I was loving this one) and an old fashioned (way too strong for me) but he liked it. We had an order the tender bites. The chicken was so moist and cooked perfectly. All of the customers were much younger than us (we're in our 60's), (we're always older than the others in bars/breweries), great crowd for a Wednesday afternoon (5pm). The music was really good too. It's air-conditioned thankfully and had a speaker so you can play your own music. The back patio is great too. Plenty of shade and gets a lot cooler in the evening. This is a great place for a date or groups. Will definitely be coming back. Cocktails are on the sweeter side if that's your thing. The food was good. Great bar bites and vegan options. I'd invited my Mom to grab drinks at a nearby Tiki Bar but she showed up to my place hungry, gasp! How dare her! want food, before cocktails. So I agreed to stop and get light bites with her before we hit the Tiki Bar. We were driving this way when I glanced over and spotted Idle Hour. I recalled them offering food and drinks, so I suggested we could stop here since we'd be close to the bar I wanted to try. She was game and we snagged a parking meter out front. This place is super cute! I had no idea and I'd never been here before. We walked into the barrel and I couldn't believe how buzzin' this spot was. It was the perfect little time. We snagged the last two seater high top in the bar area indoors, and the patio was completely full. I ordered our food and drinks from the bartender and our drinks were handed to me immediately, no waiting for them to be delivered. We received a number for our bites and those were out in no time. Mom wanted the wings and I ordered the pretzel. The wings were fine but I didn't care so much for my pretzel. My Mom on the other hand loved the pretzel so I gave her half. I originally ordered the Whiskey Barrel cocktail which I knew from one first smell of it that it would not be the sort of drink I like. I actually prefer my Bourbon neat but I do love Bourbon cocktails too, this one is just in no way my type. My Mom loved this drink, so it worked out perfectly. I handed it to her and went to order the other drink I wanted to try, the Paloma. This tequila based drink with grapefruit and lime is perfection! I could probably toss back like 4 of these. I didn't, but I could. I loved this space and the crowd, it's a super casual - laidback neighborhood unpretentious watering hole of sort. Bartenders are quick, people were calm and seemed happy to be out enjoying a drink and hanging together. If I weren't on a, try to drink less kick this is the sort of place I could come quite often. From the front of the building I wasn't really sure what to expect - maybe a dive bar? But I was pleasantly surprised inside the giant barrel! There's a huge patio in the back, with a giant tree providing shade on hot days and lots of different size seating areas, great for an intimate date or large group to gather. We ordered at the bar. They have a great drinks menu and variety of beers on tap. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich was tasty but it could have used more sauce and a bit meatier chicken patty. The Fish n' Chips was good but the tarter sauce lacked flavor. When we went for our second beer, we had to wait in line again because there was only one bartender and they were pretty busy. This is an iconic Valley bar for some very good reasons, but I'm afraid they occasionally ride on their current reputation and let some things fall through the cracks. Let's start with the very good: THE VIBE... very few bars look and feel as cool, needless to say in the area. You can either hang out inside a giant, dimly lit barrel, almost feeling like you're in the belly of some oddly sexy pirate ship, or you can sip your drinks in the beautiful back garden with the company of a huge, cartoonish dog smoking a pipe. Or you can sit inside the dog. I swear I'm not on drugs when I'm typing this. The service has always been very friendly when I go, but there are occasional lacks of communication. One recent night, I was there for trivia with a large group of friends, and I made a point of ordering all of my food and drinks from my server so she would rack up the biggest tab possible, unlike some of my friends who got impatient and walked up to the bar to order. Eventually, she stopped coming around, so I had to order from the bar, and I was surprised to find out that she had left and my tab was moved over to the bar. I don't know if this is a tip sharing thing, or if my server just had to leave, but filling me in would have been nice... I'm still not sure if I should even be concerned where and with whom I should order anything I want next time. Now the DRINKS: I've only tried a few of the cocktails, and I loved the Cedar Manhattan, but my wife once tried one of their barrel cocktails (I want to say it was the Southern Charm)... and it was straight up nasty. That said, I'm primarily a beer guy, and I feel that the beer selection could be better, especially in the way of maltier, heavier, and darker beers. There's a lot of crisp and hoppy on their menu, and less options on the other end of the spectrum. Now, I'm sure that's a response to public demand, and maybe I'm a curmudgeonly beer nerd shaking my fists for no reason, but I'd love to see something like a Belgian style ale, Scotch ale, or an Irish red on their menu. And now the FOOD... this is where I feel this place is most lacking. I can attest that the sloppy tots are amazing... there is definitely something like oregano in the sloppy Joe sauce that makes it taste vaguely Italian and more interesting than what you'd expect. However, everything else I've tried has been "meh" to "oof". My wife and I split a cheesesteak that more like a "dry steak on dryer bread", and another time we ordered nachos with beef where the beef tasted like it had never heard of salt or any other seasoning in its lifetime. The wings are nice and crispy, and their sauces are delicious, but the wings themselves are pretty scant on meat. And the flatbread and chicken fingers remind me of the best food you could imagine getting from a bowling alley. So to sum this all up... I like this place. I'll keep going back here for trivia on Tuesdays (shout out to the trivia host who is a rock star), and I could see myself having a really good time getting drinks (and not food) with friends here on any other occasion. But this place frustrates me a bit because it feels like it could be an absolute, knock-out, five star spot with its gorgeous design and the concepts behind both the drink and food menu.
