I decided to check this place out expecting some wowing Idly experience. The outcome was below expectation. The food was okay. I have had better idly, sambar and pongal before. The place is take out only. We ordered for 4 people and opted for take out and did not receive 1 order. The place is understaffed. We wanted to get filter coffee when we were picking up. The wait time was more than 5 min. I called for refund on the missing item and they apologized and told me that they would offer store credit if we revisit. I do not intend to revisit. They should be refunding me my money if they want to follow good business practices. I will wait for their "call back". And they would not let me speak to the owner/manager. I have not eaten such super duper tasty and soft idili and vada in a long time! Idili was soft and so big. Vada was cooked to perfection within and outside. I am not a pongal fan but it was pretty good. The sides were also good quality. I hope that they will maintain their quality. It's not a place to sit and eat. The service was polite and fast! Short of your mom or grandmom's cooking, this is as good as it gets! Clean, healthy and lip smacking-ly tasty South Indian food. And because unlike almost every other Indian restaurant the menu isn't 5 pages long, the few items they do offer are high quality and very well executed. Went on a Friday evening from Fremont (with high hopes since I had heard so much about the place). Some things are great while some are average. Idlis are super soft and definitely the star. Sambar is exceptionally good too. I would recommend buying an extra side of sambar since we found that the quantity was less. Vadas were average. We got 2 chutneys (not 3) - Red and coconut. What about a 5 stars review from a non Indian customer? I am always worried when ordering Indian food outside except frozen Indian food from Tj because many of the dishes are stale, but these Sambar and condiment are fresh and tasty. First tried the Idly and medhu vadai. Idly is fluffy and medhu is crispy outside and soft inside. Maybe because the idly is fermented and little bit sour so kids do not like it , I am sure they will enjoy the sambar and green chutney with roti or naan. Yum yum! Hands down "ORIGINAL" mylapore taste and quality. For someone who grew in mylapore it's hard to compromise on idli sambar. Have been here in Bay Area for 6 years and tried many South Indian restaurants, this one is close to my heart and literally reminded my home mylapore. I come from a place where idlies are soul food, our comfort food, that something we make with our eyes closed , a routine every week which we never miss. So, I wasn't expecting much. Not until I took the first bite. The idlies were panchu kutty soft and as soft and light as the clouds. There was stiff competition as to which chutney or sambhar I should dip next. The tomato chutney was lip smacking. I haven't had this complete experience in a real long time , not in the Bay anywhere. My kid finished it up without one need of a nudge which is like a real rarity . Medhu vada was soft, fresh and had a crispy outer layer. It's the best we have ever had. Pongal had the right amount of ghee and was cooked well and tasted great. They justify it by claiming meager cuts in the prices ( not more than 15-20%) range . I hate it when small businesses try to cheat people by reducing portion size once they have built a reputation . I read all the reviews on Facebook and Yelp and decided to try this place. I have tried Mylapore Express, and like their food also, I had the exact expectations for Idly Express. Service: I do not mind waiting for the food, but staff should welcome the customer and make them feel at home. Your team, especially the lady, has no clue what customer service is. She is training big time. No hello, no what is order name nothing - I volunteered all the info and said hello to her!! Food: Idlies are enormous, and quantity is a lot, but the taste is like jute bags getting stuffed into your mouth, so basically stringy and gets stuck in your throat. The chutneys are very poor in flavor, and the sambar is very poor in taste. Overall the hype that was there when the restaurant opened is not there anymore. So I would not waste my time or money revisiting this place. I would instead go to Madurai Idli or Madras Cafe in Sunnyvale. Jay, you only focus on good feedback.
