A few weeks ago my friend and I were in the neighborhood for a wine event. After the event, we walked into Il Mulino Prime. When we walked in the place was empty and we continued the Chardonnay journey with a glass of Nozzole Le Bruniche. The ambiance was cozy and definitely smaller than the location on East 60th Street. We opted for their $58 3 course prix fixe menu. For appetizers, we got the cacio e pepe and Caesar Salad. Both dishes hit the spot. I personally enjoyed the pasta. For lunch, we got the squid ink linguine and the vitello alla milanese. The Vitello alla Milanese was huge, it took me days to finish. My friend also took her linguine dish home too for lunch the next day. For dessert, we got the strawberry shortcake, tiramisu and flourless chocolate cake. All three dishes hit the spot but we were too full to finish it and took the dessert home where our other halves consumed it. You can't go wrong with the prix fixe. Personally I would stick with the pasta dishes. read more

My friend and I came here for dinner on a Tuesday evening. Upscale and elegant Italian restaurant. Service was a little slow especially since it was not crowded. Staff were not as welcoming, felt a little ignored. They provided complimentary bread. We had a glass of Chardonnay, it was just ok. We both ordered the prix-fixe dinner menu for $58. The Caesar salad was good, my friend enjoyed her caico e Pepe. For our entrees, I had the squid ink linguine and my friend had the vitello alla Milanese. We were both full, we ended up taking that rest to go. I've had better pasta, was a little disappointed and the portions were small. The dessert was my favorite, the strawberry shortcake was very delicious and my friend also liked the flourless chocolate cake. Overall experience was average, maybe it was just an off night. The food was very good. Had the mushroom ravioli with white truffles which was delicious. I was however unhappy that the Caesar salad was noted to be prepared tableside on the menu and it wasn't and the server just dropped it down. )no request for black pepper) The experience was affected by the substandard service. Holy cow! We came here because we had been a loyal customer of the West 4th street restaurant with a similar name. Well...this was just as good! The noise level was a little high but we sat in the corner and could be heard and hear no problem. The tables and chairs (no cushions) were comfortable enough. Lighting was ok d/t mostly to outside NYC lights bathing the table. The service was perfect--they came by to see how we were doing a few times...hooray and kudos. The baked clams were a little crumbly but delicious and the sauce was to die for. The portion and presentation were perfect. The veal parmigiana was one of the best ever. The crust was adherent and neither too thin nor too thick--just right. The cheese and sauce were also in just the right amounts. The veal, crust, cheese and sauce were all cooked perfectly and seasoned with care only a long tenured chef could accomplish! The bolognese tagliatelle was cooked just right--neither mushy nor tough. The three meats were like a medley in my mouth with flavors that couldn't be beat. The waitstaff and maitre de' cared, they cared a lot that people had a great experience. Excellent service, food, and atmosphere! Came for nyc restaurant week which was an amazing deal for an established restaurant like this with prices I wouldn't normally entertain. We were immediately greeted with focaccia and a complimentary cheese plate. For my starter, I got the watermelon beet salad which was so fresh! It appeared to be smaller than the normal menu item and missing the lettuce base but was still filling. This was likely due to it being part of restaurant week. For my main, I got the potato tortellini which was absolutely delicious and so fluffy. My friend ordered the skirt steak which she enjoyed. For dessert, I got the bread pudding which was very good while my friend had the flourless cheesecake. All in all, our meal was very tasty and I look forward to coming back to try their pre-fix menu which comes as a decent price and contains many more meal options compared to the restaurant week menu! read more

Five stars! The service is top notch. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, we were treated like royalty. The table received a condiment tray with olives, an eggplant spread and radishes. They also left a bread plate with the most delicious focaccia I've ever had. We also ordered the prosciutto and fig plate. The figs were so fresh and plump and the prosciutto was A+ imported ham that was the perfect accompaniment to the figs. My chicken parmigiana fit the entire plate. I ordered a side of linguine with red sauce that was one of the best in NYC! Our table also ordered Chilean sea bass and prime rib. The amount of food provided was enough for twice the people at our table. From start to finish, this was a delicious experience and I'm looking forward to returning!! read more

Friday night dinner around 7pm, not too busy. Sat outside and was the only table. Service was great at the beginning and then started to wane. Ordered wine and steak, didn't expect to have a mini meat & cheese board show up, and didn't eat too much as I needed to save room for the steak. Steak arrived and was delicious as anticipated with truffle butter and I love truffle butter. Brussel sprouts seemed more boiled vs roasted without a real good char on the outside and minimal crunch. After the food arrived is when the service disappeared. Even after the meal was done and glass of wine empty, I had to call someone over to provide the check. We came to Il Mulino Prime to celebrate Christmas Eve and they went above and beyond to accommodate our requests- created additional seating at our table and even allowed our little pug dine in with us. The food and the service were excellent and the ambiance was Christmassy and festive. We were a party of eight and every dish we tried was delicious and amazing. I had never ever paid $5 for a single glass of tap water which they didn't ever tried to refill and at $5a pop... they did me a favor. The food is exceptional and truth be told when they are already charging $67 for a10oz. Steak,i think there's no need to try and do the extra un necessary charges. The scorch out is generous enough to justify the price, the salad, Branzino and the meat are so good and of such good quality that makes it all worth it.. My friends recommended this place and I was excited to try it out. When we got there around 6 on a weekday after work, and it was pretty empty, but nearing the end of our dinner ~8, it was packed! When we sat down, we ordered a bottle of Chardonnay to share; they also brought us a small charcuterie platter and fried zucchini chips (which was kind of soggy) while we decided what to order. I got the Mixed Beets and Watermelon Salad to start and it was sweet and refreshing; my friends who ordered the meatballs highly recommend them. For the entre, I got the Salmone Alla Griglia which came out to be a lot bigger than I expected! I also got to try my friend's New York Strip which was ok (I wasn't a huge fan of the potatoes). Overall it was an good experience, however the one star deduction is for a wrong order - one of my friends ordered the Tagliatelle Bollognese but they brought her the Linguine Cacio e Pepe, which is quite different. read more

Odd interaction with the host at Il Mulino regarding the water. They added a surprising $9.50 for water on our bill. It's a lot, but that's not my issue. I'm open to paying for water. When being seated, my table was given the choice of "still" or "sparkling". We decided to play along, and not ask for "tap" water. We said "still", to which he replied (enthusiastically) "one bottle, coming up!". The water was fine: clear and flavorless. After seeing the $9.50 charge on the bill, I was curious what kind of water this was, since they didn't place any bottle on the table. I asked to "take the remainder of the bottle" with me, but the host refused. The bottles I saw waiters use were large, generic glass bottles with a wide opening. When I asked to know what brand it was, "so I could buy more on my own", he said it was from a propriety source. He chuckled and said "that's a million dollar question!". I finally asked, "your water costs a million dollars?" he basically just walked away. The couple seated next to us overheard this and said that even though they ordered tap water, they also got stuck with the $9.50. This place in SoHo is an Italian classic. I was able to be seated without making any reservation although I had to wait about half an hour. Place is small with modern, simple decor and has Ernest Hemingway's quotes on the wall. Only con, waiters could've been more attentive. My first impression of this place was that, is very cute, small and very welcoming. We had reservations for a group of 7 at 9pm. We didn't get seat until 10pm. Yes, I was already VERY Hangry at this point, I was ready to go eat somewhere else. But luckily my friend bought a few rounds of drinks and made the wait a lot less irritating. The menu looked amazing, But the daily Specials sounded even better, so decided to try a few thing for myself. Needless to say it did not disappoint. Food is tasty but Buyer Beware. Though the prices for a pasta dish on the menu were about what you'd expect in a decent NYC cafe -- they were for half portions -- but they don't tell you that. And the specials can be exorbitant-- but they don't tell you that either. When we questioned the bill - which was outrageous for what we had ordered and received, the waiter informed us "this is kind of a pricey place. Customers know that and don't question the bills." When I asked to see a menu with the full prices -- he continued lecturing me. In the end, they reduced the bill -- but it all seemed so brazen and inhospitable -- especially when you're hosting a table of mothers on Mother's Day. Visited Ll Mulino during January for outdoor dining. The restaurant has a tent for dining with heaters for each table and small cabin houses for more intimacy. The food was very good! I'll start by saying we loveeee to eat but some of us have food intolerances. My dear friend and I came here yesterday for dinner and it was a total disaster! First it took a good 15 minutes plus before anyone came to take our drink order. Fine! It's a busy Saturday night. Once we were ready to order we had a couple of questions about the menu items to ensure we'd stay away from stuff we are food intolerant to. Our server was downright rude and acted like we were inconveniencing him with our questions. He said they do not offer ingredient substitutes for any dish then forget to mention other ingredients in the meal we chose! Suffice to say, I started to get sick half way through our meal. We couldn't finish our meal which is fine. But when he came to the table we told him we were done and shortly after requested the check. Upon getting the check, we noticed something was off and asked for an itemized bill. He brought us the itemized bill and we discovered that the server had not only overcharged us but also doubled our "suggested" gratuity. He did not apologize one but he was finally nicer and told us that next time we could request substitutes or ask for a special dish to be made to accommodate our food intolerances!!! I was shocked! This was the same man that had told us they do not do substitutes early in the night as we ordered! This was a disappointing experience all around mostly because I got sick because of the server's negligence and carelessness. This situation was completely avoidable! To sum it up, if you have any food allergies or intolerances be VERY careful here or skip this place all together! Always ask for an itemized bill if something seems off! Ughhh!!!! read more

Service was amazing. Very friendly staff! We ordered octopus, grilled calamari, and crab to split. It was very nice of the restaurant to already split it up for us rather than have 3 different plates at a small table on top of our own plates. The octopus was so juicy. The crab was purely great. The grilled calamari was yummy too! They did the same with the oxtail parpadell pasta which by the way was delicious!!!! I also must say, the branzino was absolutely amazing. I was here about a year ago for restaurant week as well. I had the octopus, pasta, meatballs and steak. It was delicious then too and it was amazing last night! Why is one not like the rest? For decades there was Il Mulino, one Il Mulino on West 3rd Street. Then there seemed to be Il Mulinos everywhere, well at least a few. But one Il Mulino is different from the rest and that one is Il Mulino Prime. While Il Mulino Prime has the great pasta dishes and other Italian/Italian-American favorites, it is really a steakhouse. Their signature dishes are "prime" cuts of beef that have been dry aged for 30 days. Great steaks, great pastas, super service and in the heart of Soho. read more

Ate there today with my brother-in-law, sister, niece and my father. Beautiful corner location on a lovely day in Manhattan. It is Restaurant Week and there was a condensed menu for the table with various options of steak, spaghetti and salmon as a main entree, appetizers and dessert for just $42 per person. The waiter was first class all the way and made us feel welcomed for first-timer's We all opted for this menu and two of us had the steak, two had the salmon and one the spaghetti. All were satisfied with their meals, service and overall decor and environment. There are only like 10 tables inside the place and we had a beautiful corner table that was comfortable and inviting. I have been wanting to go to any of the Il Mulino restaurants for a while now, so was excited to go here recently. We went one night for Restaurant Week and had the best time. My friend arrived first and sat at the bar for a drink, I met her there and by the time I had gotten there, one of the owners sat down and talked to her and we chatted w him for a while. He was so nice, it was really great to meet him. We had reservations, but he suggested we just stay at the bar because we would be in great hands w the bartender, so that is what we did, and he was right! As we were ordering they brought over a complimentary cheese plate w various cheeses that were all delicious. We both ordered from the RW menu. I had the ricotta meatballs for an appetizer and they were delicious. Then for my entree I had then chicken parm which is pounded very thin and was so so good, it was a huge portion so I had left overs. For dessert I had the tiramisu and also excellent. Can't go wrong coming here! Inside is smaller than I expected, but decorated very modern and fits well in Soho with the white brick. Can't wait to try more of their restaurants. read more
