This used to be my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. Unfortunately the last three times I have been they have forgotten how to cook a steak. You can either get a steak blue or you can get a steak well done but God forbid you ask for anything in between. I haven't been in almost a year after two times of my steak coming out blue when I ordered it medium. Tonight, sure enough it came out blue again. I sent it back and it came back well done. I didn't have any visit from the management staff and the waitress was just like oh well that sucks. I will not be back. This is unfortunate as this used to be my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. I am not a believer in anything being too good to be true but J Alexander might be. On a Saturday afternoon I met up with a friend here for lunch at 3:00pm. The hostess was friendly, we were seated in a booth in the rear of the not very crowded resturant. The ambiance was intimate and sophisticated, perfect for a date, girls night out or business meeting. Our waitress Aliyah was attentive, very professional yet personable. I decided on the Cilantro Shrimp which typically comes with rice and coleslaw I substituted the sides for Mac & Cheese, and broccoli. The Shrimp were a nice size and grilled to perfection, there was a perfect blend of seasoning. The Mac and Cheese was absolutely delicious, it was different and I loved every bite. The broccoli was fresh and cooked perfectly in a butter sauce that I wish I could duplicate. My friend ordered the Carolina Crab cakes which was two 8 oz lump crab cakes drowned in some amazing aioli with a baked potato as a side. I'm from Maryland so I know a good Crab cake when I taste one and I must admit it was very good. I think the Crab cakes were a tad pricey at $36 but if you are a seafood lover living in Atlanta and want a decent crab cake it's totally worth it. The wine list had a good selection. Lastly, I had to try the carrot cake that the waitress described as made from scratch and infused with pineapple. Can someone say amazing!!!!!! The large piece of cake did not have the best presentation but who cares what dessert looks like when it taste like heaven. Ate here for a lunch the other day with my family. Food was OK. Service was pretty good. I don't think this is the best J Alexanders I have been to- everything just sorta tasted OK. We had calamari and shrimp for appetizers. I always like calamari better when it comes with sauce besides marinara but maybe that's just me. Tasted fine. Crispy- nothing special- same with the shrimp which I also felt like the sauces were lacking. We both ordered salads and added shrimp. It was a decent salad- the only negative was the blue cheese dressing... it was sweeter. Sweeter blue cheese dressing isn't my thing- but if it's yours you will surely enjoy Sweet tea was good. J's is one of my favorites. The food is always great and so is the service. This time was no exception. It's a contemporary American restaurant that is mid-priced; starting as low as $13 for the burgers and up to $35 for the steaks. The atmosphere is mature and intimate. The noise level is relatively low except a little at the bar area where there are a couple of TVs. The dining area is open to the kitchen which exposes a large flame used for the wood fired dishes. We started with the deviled eggs and Alex's salad. Both were terrific. The salad was fresh and crisp, and taken to another level by the champagne vinaigrette dressing. The eggs were topped with sugar-cured bacon. Bacon makes everything better. And since hubby doesn't eat pork, more for me. They had some tempting features as usual like pecan crusted trout, but we went with two of the staples, Rotisserie Chicken and Rattlesnake Pasta. I came here for a company outing last night and I had a wonderful experience. Our waitress, Kierra, was extremely attentive and knowledgeable of the menu items. The service was exquisite and fast. In regards to the food....I thoroughly enjoyed it. While I would not consider this a 5 star restaurant cuisine wise, I have nothing negative to say about the food here. It is tasty, hot, and well prepared. I had the crab cakes and the macaroni and cheese. The crab cakes were not filled with tons of breading like most places. I absolutely love this place. For as many times as I've been, I've never had poor service, drinks or food. The martinis are the best around - a nice pour, with an extra chilled glass of martini to accompany your existing glass. I've also been for 1/2 price bottle days. The wine list is great and they'll package any leftover wine so you can take it home. My favorite entree is the crab cakes with shoestring fries. It sounds simple, but is divine. I get it every time. Other reviews have compared J Alexander's to Houston's. I think this is a very fair comparison. While I prefer Houston's, J Alexander's is comparable, and does some things better. The atmosphere is not formal, but it is a step above your more casual spots like Outback. The main reason I like J Alexander's so much is the fire grilled artichokes. I simply must get that when I go. Their burgers are very good. I recommend the steak burger. It is very juicy and flavorful. The steaks are also quite delicious. Maybe not the top of the top steaks, but definitely a step above Outback/Longhorn for example. Service has always been prompt. I have been about 7-8 times and never had a bad experience. It can get quite busy so plan to make a reservation or perhaps a 30 minute wait at peak times. read more

If you were to blindfold me and walk me into J. Alexander's, I'd swear I was at Houston's. I'm not sure which came first, but clearly one was inspired by the other! I've been a few times for lunch on weekdays and considering the price point, it draws a surprisingly large lunch crowd. It's not uncommon to encounter a group of people (mostly nearby professionals) in the waiting area. Fortunately, they're still able to get people in & out relatively quickly. The dimly lit interior, open kitchen and rotating rotisseries are familiar sights. Are you sure we're not at Houston's?! While I enjoy dim lighting at dinner, it was a little too dark for daytime lunch. But I guess there isn't a whole lot they can do to brighten things up with a masculine design. Oh well, I'll pretend I'm a cavewoman ;) My guest and I settled in to the cave & started with the Mexico City spinach con queso ($12) appetizer. It was creamy, rich and very filling. After plowing through the tortilla chips & dip, our appetites dwindled and we decided to order light. Soup de jour (chicken pasta) + house salad ($13) for me & the Thai kai chicken salad ($15) for my friend. My soup & salad were pretty good. The Thai Kai chicken salad was flavorful and very generously sized. While these items didn't knock out socks off, we knew other items on the menu could. We caught the waft of barbecue baby back ribs rushing past us and we drooled over the sautéed trout and loaded potato at the table next to us. If only we weren't already so full! For a chain, I'm impressed by the quality and consistency of this place. I will never be back. I did not have an enjoyable experience at this restaurant and unfortunately what happened after my dining experience is what solidified that I will never return. Our server forged our signatures and give themselves a bigger tip after we left. I noticed the charge on my account did not reflect what I paid. They made me jump through hoops to even get just my TIP back from them. They could use a few lessons in customer service. read more

I will start with Clifton was fantastic! Excellent waiter. The food was every good, as it always is. I would have given it a five but I can't because of the corporate issues I have. I have known for years that corporate policies are four table max to keep the waiters from being in the weeds and the service top notch. However we are in a pandemic, more towards the end, but servers need to make money to stay. I wish that they would extend the policy for the sake of their staff. Five tables will not make or break anyone's experiences. We watched so many people not want to wait the 45 minutes, because they did not have a reservation, turn around and leave. As a Plant-Based Vegan I have found that some of the best veggie sides are actually served at steakhouses so I do not normally have a problem finding items to eat. I have been here twice and although I wouldn't say this an amazing restaurant it is fair - I would go with a solid 3.75 star rating. I don't really have an affinity for this genre of food but everything I have had has been decent. I really like their grilled chicken salad and the cornbread croutons. Menu is somewhat limited in terms of offerings but there is something for most pallets. Staff is always friendly and accommodating; a few colleagues and myself arrived one evening at 9:40 pm and were seated without and issue - they close at 10 pm. Lighting is low and warm. J Alexander is my favorite place to go for Prime Rib in Atlanta. Their prime rib is just AMAZING and if you like prime rib, you must try this! Its full of flavor! I like my Prime Rib medium or medium rare and its always cooked perfectly to the temperature I ask for. The portions are big and I always have left overs. The carrot cake is THE BEST I have ever had.
