This was the highlight to the end of my vacation. We started our meal with the colossal onion rings, which were fried to perfection. I spent almost the entire time chewing them trying to figure out was in the sauce. They were breaded perfectly, and seasoned the same. For our entrees we decided to go with the recommended steak maui. Our waitress, Dana, said it had been marinated in pineapple juice, ginger, and garlic and boy was it apparent. It was so tender and juicy. I normally order medium, but went for medium well. It wasn't tough at all. For sides I went big with the mac and cheese, broccoli, and smashed potatoes. The broccoli was broccoli, yet still yummy with some sort of garlic butter sauce. The smashed potatoes were a little lumpy like I like them indicating that they used real potatoes. They were seasoned so lovely. The star of the sides was easily the mac and cheese. I don't even know where to begin. Creamy, cheesy, the crust was crispy. So much flavor. So much richness. After our meal, the manager Andrea came and immediately noticed the look of our faces of not necessarily being full, but saving room for dessert. She suggested the key lime pie and triple chocolate cake. The way she described it sold me, so we waited on our waitress to come back so we could order it. Lo and behold, our waitress came back not with dessert menus, but plates for the dessert as the manager had told her that it was our first visit and it was on the house. That pie....if you're a fan of key lime pie you will NOT be disappointed. As a huge fan of that particular pie, it was the best I've ever had. The crust has graham crackers and pecans almost as a cobbler taste with cinnamon and hints of nutmeg. My date allowed me to try her cake and ice cream, and my god! It was so moist and warm as if it were freshly baked out of the oven. It was decadent and the chocolate popped. I was amazed not only at the taste, but the service. They won over a customer and fan as I've never been wowed before by a restaurant. read more

My family and friends took me here for my birthday dinner. I had heard several good things about the restaurant and was anxious to try it for the first time. The reservation was for 9pm but we were asked to wait for our table when we arrived. That wasn't a big deal at all, it was only a few minutes wait time. I had the seafood pasta and it was okay to say the least, very bland and lacking substance. My biggest complaint would have to be the service our server was just not pleasant. Her demeanor from the beginning made that apparent. Food orders were mixed up, we were lacking with water being refilled, and having an adequate amount in the decanters to service ourselves. Some of my guests even text me while sitting at the table to complain about the service. My sister eventually spoke with a manager and that person did comp our drinks, my meal, and my sisters meal. Strangely enough this person never came over to offer a formal apology for the mediocre service we experienced. Overall I enjoyed my birthday with my family and close friends, I cannot say that I would try this place again. If I did it would be during an earlier part of the day, maybe the server was just tired. read more

I gave J Alexander's one star but they deserve 5 for their food. Seriously, their food is unbelievably delicious. The one-star is because I received request for feedback about the valet parking. It was raining, the guy was too consumed with his face in his cell phone and he looked up and acknowledge me but put his face right back in his phone. He did not come to my door with an umbrella. I had to get my own umbrella out of my car and take him my key. He was very unaccommodating. I sent this in to the restaurant, two weeks ago but with no response. So, here it is on Yelp. read more

My family heard so many good Things about this place so we decided to try it. The service was outstanding and the hostess were very pleasant and kept smiles on their faces. The only downfall I have to say about this place is that the food is identical to my local restaurant Nona Blue. The grilled artichokes and the spinach dip tasted the exact same. I specifically ordered the carrot cake to see if was the same and not to my surprise it was. I knew the owner of Nona Blue joked about stealing recipes because he used to work for them but I never actually thought he did it. What a shame a restaurant can't be original and has to steal thunder from this awesome place. read more

Yummy food, huge services, and no corking fee to bring in your own wine!

This has become my new favorite restaurant. Nice decor & very relaxed atmosphere. You can make reservations, but we've never had to wait more than 15 minutes. Been there about five times now, and we are yet to be disappointed. Must try the onion rings, they're huge and delicious. All the entrees are winners, but my fav is the prime rib. For dessert, you can't beat their carrot cake. Extremely fresh & moist, covered in warm icing - it melts as soon as it hits your mouth. read more

What truly made our date night magical was our outstading server, Jordan! Not only was he extremley professinal and nailed our wine presentation ( which I take seriously) , he was knowledgable about the menu ! He made excellent reccomdations on both food a wine selections , and his attention to detail was superb! Oh and the food was A-mazing ! The cilantro shrimp was cooked to perfection and a very large portion size (perfect for leftovers) :) , and the steak and fries was just as wonderful. Not a terrible place or anything. It's just way overpriced for the quality of food you get. I've been here 3 separate times. The food is edible. I've been to other higher end restaurants that have far superior quality than this place. If this place was 1/2 the price I'd be comfortable with the quality. Staff is hit or miss. I've experienced mildly unpleasant service, but nothing over the top. I understand being a server is stressful as I did it for 3 years. I'm most disappointed by the quality of food for the price. My husband and I are quite familiar with J Alexanders food quality and service from eating at other locations. We were not disappointed with this new location and are very happy to see them come to the Jacksonville area. We have eaten there twice now and both times were very pleased with menu choices, quality of food and most importantly, efficiency of wait staff. We will be hosting our son's 39th birthday lunch there this week and expect nothing but the best. Give this location a try and I can't imagine being disappointed. read more

I have eaten here before and even though it was costly, I enjoyed it, and found the staff to be very nice. Last time I went I was very disappointed. Hostess was rude and food this time was very undercooked. I was vomiting for 2 days following. When I called manager at restaurant, she was flippant.. Also, another time when my place of business called them about an order, again the person was very rude. There are so many good restaurants in North East Florida and in St. Johns Town Center, I would much rather give my business to one that makes the customer feel appreciated. I always enjoy my dining experience here. You always get a plate full! I would recommend that they change up their menu though. The lunch and dinner menu is the same and it defeats the purpose of trying it at different times of the day. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but a change every once in awhile couldn't hurt. This place is great, the food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. I ordered the Spinach Con Queso, Alex's Salad, and Steak Maui. The Spinach Con Queso and Alex's Salad were good, and the Steak Maui was great. The seasoning on the Steak Maui (Ribeye) elevated it from good to awesome. It also came with mash potatoes which were good as well. My girlfriend had the freshly made (still warm) carrot cake which she said was excellent. Overall, a great dining experience. read more

This was my forth dining experience at J. Alexanders. The food has always been great! It happened to be a Friday night and my boyfriend and I called ahead on the way to add our name to the list since we knew there would be a wait. They were very accommodating with this request and we arrived promptly and checked in. We were told it would be around 20-25 minutes and so we grabbed a beer and glass of wine at the bar. Soon enough we were ready to be seated and the host brought us to the table and even offered to carry our drinks...haha(which we declined since we didn't mind carrying them ourselves). He was very friendly and told us our server would be with us shortly. The server came to our table soon after and told us the specials. We ordered the smoked salmon dip that was a special for our appetizer and it was awesome! Delicious salmon that they smoke in house! That was brought to our table very quickly because we told our server how starving we were from a long work day! As we were eating our appetizer the server came back again to take our entree order. I would have preferred to finish enjoying the appetizer, as the service was pretty rushed but we went ahead and ordered our meal. My boyfriend had the pork tenderloin before and really enjoyed it, so he ordered that again. I ordered the vegetable plate with sauteed broccoli, roasted butternut squash, mac and cheese and the Israeli couscous. All my veggies were delicious! My boyfriend's however was a little over cooked and sauce was changed on the menu since he last ordered it so it was not his favorite. He did enjoy the rice accompaniment very much. The server came back to ask us how we enjoyed our dinners and we told her the pork was a little overcooked (dry). She must have told the manager that sat us to the table because he came back to give us a card good for a complimentary $25 off your next visit. I was very surprised because we did not expect to receive anything! That was a wonderful display of the excellent customer service this restaurant offers and we will definitely be back again! read more

Decided to go to J Alexanders for the first time tonight. We live in Charlotte we come to Jacksonville fairly often. We looked at the reviews and menu and felt that it was a safe bet. We had a magnificent experience with both service and food. The service was really great. They were on top of everything and did it with humor and grace. For starters we had the chips and spinach Queso. It was great and a very large portion. My wife had salmon and I had the hate. Both were absolutely delicious. We also had the original macaroni and cheese which i highly recommend. What was a little surprising what is the size of the portions. It was enough food for two meals. Which is exactly what we did. We took half home for tomorrow's lunch. The service, flavor and atmosphere makes this restaurant a 5 star experience. read more

First and last time I will eat in a J Alexander restaurant. Mediocre wine list, then when I ordered a $170 bottle of wine, they never showed it to me, opened it at the bar and then presented it. How do I know they actually gave me the wine I ordered vs. subbing a cheaper wine. First time this has ever happened to me. I explained that to our server, who was excellent, and suggested she discuss with management because I said I would never return. She said she used to work at Carrabas and she opened wine at the table and did not know why they didn't here. No manager ever stopped by to explain. I had onion rings- good; fried Artichokes- so- so; salmon - over cooked and dry; my guests had Starks good but not up to Capital Grill standards. They gave us a free carrot cake dessert- good. The wine service turned me off as did the overcooked salmon. Not worth the price despite a food server. Better places with better food. read more

We had a party of 5 and the call ahead seating worked. We were enthralled by the roasted artichokes and the onion rings for our appetizers. But a big disappointment were the fish tacos. I recommended them and 4 of us ordered them. When they came to the table there were no avocados on them. One person ordered them especially looking forward to the avocado and mentioned it to the server. When we asked what happened, the server investigated and was told that the avocados were bad. This was a main part of the taco, so it would have been nice to have been informed BEFORE we received the dishes and not make us find out after it had been placed in front of us. One person ordered a piece of carrot cake for dessert and it was huge. It was also some of the best carrot cake any of us had ever eaten. We took half of it home. It was an OK experience, but disappointing nonetheless. read more

I am normally a fan but last night's experience was very disappointing. I sat at the bar, which was not busy. But there were 3 bartenders, so service should be good right? We ask for drink menu, was handed the short cocktail list. Had to flag down again, and ask for the wine menu, it was $20 Tuesday Bottle night, but yeah, make us flag you down to get the menu. Couldn't get waters, had to flag down to order an appetizer, which came out promptly, but the food runner couldn't find us, I mean there were 6 people at the bar, it is hard. Food came out. I ordered the steak burger Medium Rare, and tasted good- but it was more on the rare side and I got sick when I got home. Meanwhile no offer is salt and pepper, etc. If this was my first time at J's I wouldn't go back based on the horrible 3 person team bar service on 11/22 at 630pm. read more
