I'd give the food about 4 stars...it was very good, but I've had better. It was really the service that stood out. Our waiter Felipe was great, and I'd give him 5 stars alone, but the other servers would not hesitate to clear a plate or offer a refill if they saw an empty glass. On top of all of that, they take reservations on OpenTable which is very convenient for us and allowed us to make movie plans without worrying about the wait at the restaurant. We will definitely be back! I had the Maui Steak which was pretty good, my wife had the salmon which she said was excellent. This is one of the few restaurants in Florida that is reasonably priced and consistently great. Their baby back ribs are the best down here and I've never had a baked potato better than theirs! By far the best restaurant in the Plantation area. Our bartender Jenice was absolutely incredible as always. She has such an amazing personality and is so attentive all while handling the demands of the service well. Kind of wish that the managers were more personable, we come here every Saturday night for date night and see them hover but never approach (not that we come here for them but is definitely a plus as far as customer service goes) but that's just the bartender in me speaking.. I came back to J. Alexander after a while hoping to enjoy a really good steak in my neighborhood instead of having to drive 20-40 mins. I was starving having not eaten all day and came in around 4pm (no rush). The menu looked great but I knew I wanted a ribeye which is one of my favourites. I asked the server/bartender (I sat at the bar late) I like my steakes medium rare and he suggested I order a medium as they are usually cooked on the rare side and switched the potatoes for tomatoes. The presentation was very nice and the size of the steak was perfect. The reason for the two stars is mostly due to weak service and the fact the steak was over cooked, it was a true medium well to well but I have to say the flavor was really good. Now I never send food back as I hate to waste any but I did want to tell the waiter how it was over cooked. I waited a few mins to show him but he never came, never looked in my direction or even from across the bar asked how it was. I slowly over a period of 35-40 mins ended up eating the entire steak waiting to show. A good 6 mins after I was done he finally came. I had left a small piece just to show him he totally discounted my polite comment 'it was great but not medium or rare' took the plate and walked away. :( I wish we had better fine dinning options in Plantation. read more

We picked up from J. Alexander's last night and everything was spot on. The filet mignon was perfectly medium rare and was a large 10 oz. portion. The burger was also cooked perfectly at medium rare. Full house on a Tuesday night, and the service was amazing! Our waitress Stephanie was very attentive , as well as each waiter that would bring us a new dish/pick up a finished dish. The calamari appetizer was delicious, and enough to share for two. My husband had the Maui steak, which was surprisingly sweet due to the pinapple sauce , but the steak itself didn't have enough flavor to his liking. Came to have my birthday dinner here. Although there was a 30 minute wait, it was not that bad. We started off with the Chicken pasta soup which I thought was delicious. The server was cool and kept checking on us. My son had the burger and fries (wack I know) and I ended up eating half of his fries. The mrs. ordered a kabob plate and I had a NY Steak. The steak was cooked a bit more than I would have liked but it was very tasty as well. The coleslaw had either too much celery seed or pepper. Was not that impressed. Have been to this location several times in the past and it's been 50:50 as to the service and quality and consistency of the food. We went tonight to celebrate my wife's birthday because it's a local restaurant making it very convenient. We started with a magnificent grilled artichoke which we've had in the past and it didn't fail to please. Then came the entrees. We ordered the bbq ribs dry rubbed without sauce and a prime rib sandwich . The ribs arrived and were so dry and over cooked so they were sent back. We were advised by the server that the kitchen advised that they wouldn't be any different unless we had them prepared with the bbq sauce on them. So we agreed to have them that way. Our second dish the Prime rib sandwich was so salty that it too, had to be returned. We chose instead, a fried fish sandwich . The fish sandwich arrived, and immediately the odor of old fish was wafting at our table. Additionally, it was apparent that the fish was overcooked . This too, was returned to the kitchen and at that point we chose to only remain with the ribs. Ribs arrived and while they were moist from the sauce they were also "fall off the bone" flavorless as if they had been boiled prior to grilling. Note: We've had these in the past and this was not the way they had been prepared. Note to reader: we should have returned them but instead chose to eat them and just advised our server that we were truly disappointed as to their quality. As I mentioned, we were there for a birthday and when we were seated my wife noticed the featured dessert was banana cream pie. She commented that we should start with that and then see what we might want. Well, in retrospect, that was an excellent suggestion and had we only had the artichokes,a bottle of wine and the dessert it would have been an excellent meal. As it was,the meal was a disaster and even though we had returned two entrees and commented on the quality of the third, management made no effort to come and speak to us and make any apology. J's has a busy bar, robust wine list and awesome martinis. The also feature daily specials. Main courses include a side but usually no vegetables unless you swap up the starch. My favorites include the veggie burger (the taste will satisfy any carnivore-trust me), succulent ribs, steak kabobs, steaks, tacos. Favorite sides include the Mac, shoestring fries, haricots verts (French string beans when available). I don't like to dine in "chain" like restaurants. But, J Alexander's is clearly the exception. I have been to this J.A. many many times. Decor is great. Comfortable, always cool in temperature, and always pretty good service. I've had the Smoked Salmon Dip, the Cod, the Ahi Tuna Salad, the Alex's Salad, the Steak Burger, the Veggie Burger, the Prime Rib, and the Crab Cakes. All good. Consistently good all the time. But, the best in show for me is the Caesar Salad, Steak Maui (marinated rib eye) and the Carrot Cake (served warm with cream cheese icing). Been here twice and enjoyed both experiences. The first time I dined here was with my family after moving to Florida. We wanted a nice meal after moving all my things all day and thought this was the perfect location to unwind and grub. Second time was with my boyfriend after I finished a round of grueling exams. Both experiences here have been very pleasant. It's a deceivingly large restaurant. I didn't think it would seat as many people looking at it from the outside. You walk in and there's a nice waiting area just in case you didn't make a reservation or arrived earlier than your reservation time. There's a cozy bar area, booths, and regular tables. It's pretty dimly lit. I'm all about setting the romantic ambience and all but sometimes you can go too dark and then you can't even see your date's face anymore. Service here is on point. Never had to ask for a refill of water and I never had to refill my own wineglass. You can bring in your own bottles with no corkage fee as long as they don't sell that particular wine you bring in. And if you'd rather get wine there, they have a very extensive list so do your homework before going in so you can select the best wine for your palate! And if you're new to wines or feel overwhelmed about the options the staff here is well informed and will help you pick out the best glass/bottle. As for the food, it's pretty good. I remember getting a grilled artichoke that was just perfect with the dill sauce. A great way to get your salivary and digestive juices going. I've also had their smoked salmon spread. It's pretty filling though so I'd be careful about overeating that if you're with one other person or can't eat as much. The steaks here are done really well. My filet mignon was cooked to the perfect medium rare. And the quality of meat was really nice and marbled. All you need is a butter knife to slice through that ever so tasty piece of meat. They also had this Maui steak that hits all the right flavor notes of sweet, smokey, and salty. Honestly, order that. Regrettably I have not tried their desserts here. I was just too full at the end of my meal to order anything afterward. And that's saying a lot since I always try to save a little pocket of my stomach for dessert. Maybe next time! So if you're in the mood for a fine dining experience but don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars per person, I highly suggest trying this place out. This place is one of the very few near my office where I can escape to have an ok/ tasty, chatty lunch and a decent glass of red wine --on occasion-- when I really need to wash away the caked-on residue of numbsculls - I mean, my beloved co-workers. The Thai Chicken salad is consistently good -- it's the dressing. It's also ginormous. I always have enough to take back to the office - to put in the fridge and then forget I put it there. Today I enjoyed their Veggie Sampler which was damn good. You select 4 items from the Sides menu - which includes veggies of the day, cous cous and some other tastings. The grilled Zucchini was really perfectly done. Broccoli and beefsteak tomatoes and the tabouleh/cous cous side were prepared just right - perfect texture. Simple fare, but Def.- A-ok. My friends chowed down burgers and fries and chicken fingers and mac and cheese. I felt surprisingly fresh. I licked my plate clean but they all took back their little to-go boxes - to forget back at the office fridge. I experienced nothing other than superb service & good quality food (knock on wood) & I been to many locations. Whether I'm in the mood for a huge salads (love the butter milk ranch dressing) filet kabobs with the smash potatoes, prime rib with those smash potatoes or my fish choice of the day & yep them smash potatoes, I'm always satisfied. I always ask for parmesan cheese on top of my potatoes & some balsamic to drizzle on my artichokes. Sometimes I get a side of mac- n cheese because it's so cheesy & yummy. Had a craving for steak today, but not just any kind of steak. We wanted the Steak Maui !!! There is just no other steak like it. I mean it's juicy tenderness that been marinated in pineapple juice and brown sugar.... XOXO heaven in your mouth. It was a late lunch early dinner for us so the two of us ordered food for three. ;p We were very hungry, what can I say. For starters we had their chicken cream soup. They always make this perfectly , not too creamy where after four or five spoons you want to eat something else. Then came the Alexander salad with champagne vinaigrette. Good size that's large enough to share. Next the calamaris came out . Another lage enough portion to share, with some warm marinara sauce. Not sure about other people preferences but I really hate it when restaurants serve cold marinara sauce. It's a bit unappetizing for us when that happens. Like come on people don't be so lazy!!! Lastly the main reason for us coming here arrive at the table. NO Sharing Now!!! Two came perfectly cooked med rare . Yes you read it right a Steak Maui for each of us girls. Because like your man , us girls don't share our Steak Maui!!! We could shear just about anything else but that. Our waitress gave us a unbelievable look at the end. LOUD LOUD LOUD!! I admit that it was busy..it was lunchtime...but it was so LOUD in there that I couldnt even talk to my friend above the loud noise in this restaurant. The menu is limited and overpriced. I had a salad, assumed that it wouldnt smell like EGGS but it had the worst egg salad smell, ugh. I couldnt even stomach eating it. My fault, I should have told them to leave the egg out of the salad but usually it doesnt stink so badly... The Waiter was uptight with a bad case of OCD and he kept coming over to the table every 3-6 minutes (im not exaggerating) to clean every single wrapper or crumb or fill our water glasses. Im sure he was trying to do a good job but it was annoying, to the point that I just gave up trying to talk or socialize with my friend...between the OCD waiter , the smelly egg in the salad and the noise, it was a terrible experience. The salads here really stand out. They are quite delicious and large and I recommend the ranch dressing! Unfortunately, the salads no longer come with your meal and you have to pay extra for them though I would still say it's worth it. The Spinach dip is fabulous, one of the best I've ever had and the tortilla chips are great. As for the main course, the prime rib is the star here. I think it's because the location is a bit hidden on Broward Ave. Anyway, I'm giving this place 4 stars because of the MACARONI AND CHEESE, decor, KEY LIME PIE and Carrot cake. We never received any bread while we waited so I don't know what the bread mention below is about. Beyond appetizers, I ordered the Steak and Fries and a side of the Mac & Cheese (I'm a mac and cheese woman and will try it everywhere I go). Now, the steak? It was okay. I've definitely had way better. If this is one of the better steak locales in FL, then I feel sorry for the locals because I'm sure you could make something better in your backyard. However, it wasn't inedible and it was still moist though I like mine cooked medium-well, so they didn't lose any major stars there. The service was less than impressive though I felt like it was limited to the ability of our waiter alone. Everyone else seemed to be on their game. When we ordered drinks, even though someone in our party wanted to make a toast, we had to wait a good 5 more minutes for my drink because they "didn't have everything at one bar." Further, someone ordered soup and it never came. Since the "someone" was 7 years old and they really wanted soup, when they put on the unhappy face, we flagged down our waiter for the mishap. Later, he took it off the bill so again no loss of stars. In general, I must say the portions at this place are HUGE. My main entree alone was probably 3 servings of steak and fries. So, I think the prices are reasonable. If you care about calories, ask them to put half of anything in a box because it will still be big when it hits the table. Now - I've saved the best for last ... I would go back to this location solely for the $4 Mac and Cheese. And I would happily order two of them (though one was actually one serving) as my main entree. I likened the amazingness of this mac and choose to that of Z'Tejas in Texas and even though I've never experimented with drugs, I would also liken it to crack-cocaine because it's fantastically addicting. I seriously couldn't get enough of this stuff. It had some flaky baked cheese but the pasta was perfect - not hard or too soft and mushy. Then there was a creamy cheesy part as well; True heaven in your mouth. Also, the decor was really nice - the location feels very open and roomy but the tables are set-up in a way that makes secluded enough that your table feels like it's all too yourself at the same time. Impressive design and probably a good place for a date. It wasn't terribly loud and we didn't wait long to be seated. We topped off the occasion with key lime pie, carrot cake and chocolate cake. I only tried the first two and am still in shock when I think about how big they were. One of anything is more than enough for two people. I can put away food like nobody's business, but even I couldn't complete my half of the carrot cake (but I did try the key lime pie which maybe took up some room). So all-in-all, 4 stars. Really an average eating experience- especially after many of the other restaurants we ate at during our stay in Miami. Atmosphere okay no complimentary bread or chips and dip during the wait. Our waiter wasn't very inattentive. So much so she brought wet towels AFTER he devoted the ribs and went to the bathroom to wash his hands. I ordered the steak burger- that was a mistake. Don't know why the place is always packed. 15 minute wait to be seated on a weeknight, smoked fish dip was actually smoked dip, brightly-lit kitchen inside restaurant is both distracting and blinding if you're seated facing it, as the rest of the restaurant is very dim. If you go, ask to be seated by windows, away from the kitchen. Prices on the stratospheric side. Pomegranate martini was sent back, Guinness comes only in a bottle, prime rib was nice and tender. We love the food at J. Alexanders with one exception - the food is not usually hot! We have gone there many times and there is always at least one item and sometimes all items on the plate being served that are just warm. I noticed that they have along table/bar on the restaurant side of the open kitchen With warming lights. We've wondered how long the food has been sitting? It's not that it doesn't taste good it just not hot. I'm sure this is something that could be easily corrected. read more

A Houston's rip-off? First of all, Houston's is a steakhouse and I don't think they invited them. Seondly if there's a cheaper Houston's, then sign me up! Yes J Alexander's is a steakhouse and the food is great and the atmosphere is woodsy. There also happens to not be a Houston's anywhere near here so if I was in Plantation I would check out J Alexander's. I stand by my previous statement that you can always judge a good steakhouse by the bread. The bread here is delicious and if I remember correctly I think they serve it with a compound butter. Good dished here include the salmon and the seared tuna salad. Both are winners. I've never tried the prime rib or the steak but I hear they are delicious..and yes, the service is excellent. Everything here is just the way it should be...good and simple. I think this resaurant's only downfall is it's slightly out of the way location.
