We selected this restaurant to celebrate this year's wedding anniversary. This was our first time at this restaurant's new location. We ate at J. Alexander's Overland Park, KS location many times. We had reservations and was greeted by the young ladies at the front entrance and seated shortly thereafter. Our server, Tre came out and welcomed us and introduced himself. He congratulated us on our anniversary with a nice card signed by several of the restaurant personnel. From the menu, we ordered salads, Texas redfish and crab cakes. The entrees included Louisiana rice, green beans, and coleslaw. All food items were generous and well-seasoned which required take-outs containers. Finally, the warm spice carrot cake was the knockout punch! We picked the right spot and no disappointment. My wife and I returned for another happy hour, and stayed for dinner. The restaurant is a nice upscale addition to the area, and filled up quickly for a Thursday. You'll probably want reservations for dinner. The food and service are excellent. Jennifer behind the bar was friendly and attentive. Nick Stager is the Coach in Charge of Service and came by several times to check on us. My wife and I are retired leadership and management consultants, and we complemented Nick on how well his team works together, even on a very busy eventing. Shucks. I read great things about this place and was excited to try it. Our server took our drink order and asked if we wanted to get appetizers started. My wife and I each ordered a drink and two appetizers, calamari and wood-fired artichokes. The appetizers came out super quickly, but unfortunately, our drinks did not make the voyage. In fact, they were 5 minutes behind. At least we had water at the table. The calamari was very average, not bad, a little chewy maybe, but forgettable. The artichokes were inedible, literally. My wife had never eaten artichokes before so I showed her the correct way, peeling off one petal at a time, dipping the petal into the sauce, then scraping the flesh off with your teeth provided the petals are firm enough to bite on to. But these were not. While quite flavorful, the artichokes were either overcooked or too small as the petals just tore with little effort and had very little meat on them. We sent them back and the server mentioned that he would take this off of our bill. The manager came out shortly thereafter and apologized to us and offered us a free desert. While totally unnecessary, we appreciated the gesture. We got through our drinks pretty quickly so we ordered another round. I ordered the Maui steak with mashed potatoes and my wife ordered the cheeseburger with fries and a side of mac and cheese because the menu did a great job of tempting us. Our food arrived, but sadly we were still waiting for our drinks. Also, I didn't realize that my utensils were gone. I wanted to flag down our server but he was nowhere to be found... or any other staff for that matter. Almost as if they were all on a break together. Very strange. Meanwhile, I sat there watching the whisps of steam from my steak gradually cease with every passing moment. I waited seven long minutes for a someone to ask for a fork and knife, which might as well be an eternity when you're hungry. The steak was quite tasty and cooked pretty close to what I asked for, but was very grisly. Albeit, it was a rib eye, but probably one of the fattiest steaks I can remember ordering from a restaurant. The mashed potatoes were the rustic lumpy kind which is ok, they were just cold, most likely from having to wait so long to eat them. I should have had our server replace them, but I was hungry and didn't want to wait again. My wife said her burger wasn't great so I tried it. She was right, it wasn't great... it actually wasn't even good. The burger was overcooked and had zero seasoning on it. The bun broke apart so she had to eat it with a fork and knife. Our server said the burger was cooked on the wood-fired grill, but had none of the wood-fired flavor, in fact, the meat didn't taste much like anything at all. So disappointing. The mac and cheese was a homerun though and she wished she should have just ordered that instead. We ordered the carrot cake courtesy of the manager, and it was amazing! All in all, I know that this restaurant only opened a few weeks ago and they are probably incurring some growing pains, but there are some fundamental issues that need to be addressed. Since the ambiance was nice and our server was friendly, I would reluctantly give them another shot in the future, I would just probably have to be a little more assertive voicing my concerns when issues arise. Normally I critique after three visits especially after a recent opening, however, I will leave a review. Front door customer service was nice. You can tell they are well over staffed as they are still in training. Craft cocktails were good. I had a Doppelgänger that was decent. We ordered the sushi rolls and I thought the Cowboy was the best considering this is not an Asian restaurant. The Crispy Rice was chewy. Probably overcooked. According to my friend, the Prime Rib was chewy and just not a good cut of steak. Baked potatoes appeared to have been sitting under a lamp all day. So my friend ordered the Maui Ribeye which was served rare when I ordered medium. We had the Mac n cheese that came out watery and all I could taste was sour cream. Clearly we left disappointed and hungry. The carrot cake and Key Lime pie was delicious. Service was good and they wanted to make it right but it could never get right. I know they need to work out the kinks and I'm willing to try them again. This is not the JA's that I remember. I hope to update this review with a better more improved one. read more

I've been twice since they opened and they've only been open for 8 days. Food, Service/atmosphere: 10/10. Artichokes are incredible. The Thai tuna salad was fresh and just perfection. Had the poke bowl and it was delicious. The key lime pie was the best I've ever had. What makes this place extra special is the fantastic service. Big shout out to Madeline. She was terrific and went above and beyond to make us happy. The staff is clearly proud of their restaurant and makes you feel welcome. Pro tip: make reservations! Food service was good, can't say much about the front desk and placement, looks like if you don't want to be seated by the bathrooms, kitchen or front door, they don't take the trouble to look for another suitable table for you. Sorry the dress code is misleading especially when we dress up to see others walk in with shorts and flip flops!! So it's not fine dining I suppose. Coming to the food, ordered the red fish as the reviews said, bland as can be, could get better at pappadeux for less. The steak and fries was tough at medium, the rib eye was half blubber. The mashed potatoes were not really mashed potatoes. The sauce with it was watery and salty. Not sure why they have 4.5 stars!! I think for steak we will stick with Steve Fields but we like to give fairly new restaurants a chance, sorry will have to pass on this one. read more

We've been going to J. Alexander's for over a decade in the Midwest so we were excited to see one here in North Dallas. The first time we went was during lunch so I got the chicken tenders, fries and slaw. Service was just ok as it was a bunch of teenagers who we had to flag down from their socializing to get refills. Food was good, fries are the best. We dined here last night for dinner, our reservations were for 3:45pm & we're seated around 3:55pm. We like to get in before the dinner rush but even at that time it was busy. Ordered the steak and fries, prime rib, a salad and mac n cheese. Service by our waiter, Trey was ok. The prime rib was extremely underwhelming. Very fatty and just k, meh. My steak was well done when I ordered it medium. Trey didn't come by until I was more than halfway done with my dry steak (yet very flavorful) so I wasn't able to tell him they cooked it wrong until then. They made me another steak which came out thicker and cooked the way I asked. We had them bag it up. Our salad had so much dressing that I had to ask for more lettuce to make it edible. I'm giving 2 stars for 2 reasons, 1: I should never have to send anything back to the kitchen in such a nice steakhouses and 2: they don't offer military discount. Do better J. Alexander. It's sad that the most praised item of the meal were the french fries. read more

They had lots of different appetizers that sounded good. We got the edamame and enjoyed . For entrées we got the baby back ribs very tender and flavorful) that came with fries and coleslaw. I got salmon ordered med well (so it wouldn't come out mushy inside ) with smashed . potatoes. Salmon did come out undercooked so I did send it back. Very busy... reservations definitely recommended. Once seated, appreciated the service & had good rapport. Food was fine... but, seemed to appeal to an older demographic & covers a wide array of flavors/cuisines. Lots to choose from... nothing was bad, but found different dishes a little heavy handed on seasoning. My general takeaway was I know of many other places that do specific dishes like sushi better (to my taste) at a cheaper price point. Seemed to harken back to days where elevated chain restaurants were more common & popular. I heard that the food was good, and yes it is! I ordered the crab cakes - delish! The dinner came with 2 large crab cakes made with Jumbo lump crab meat, mi mail breading and just a tin layer of panko crumbs on to and bottom. Perfecto! The hubby had Redfish with a Tasso gravy. Out of this world! Tasso gravy is a little spicy for be ready for that. They have us their signature warm carrot cake for dessert and all we could was moan in harmony with the first bite. Haven't had that since Houston's in Addison. The Queso with Spinach and a very unique Salsa was excellent as well. The Filet Mignon with Baked Potato was cooked to perfection. I've eaten at this restaurant several times in the past in Kansas, and it was fantastic. The experience in Plano was subpar. The service was slow, bad and untimely. We waited a while to place our order and also for the check at the end. The food was the best thing going for them. I would not come back unless I knew the service had improved.
