We've been going to J. Alexander's for over a decade in the Midwest so we were excited to see one here in North Dallas. The first time we went was during lunch so I got the chicken tenders, fries and slaw. Service was just ok as it was a bunch of teenagers who we had to flag down from their socializing to get refills. Food was good, fries are the best. We dined here last night for dinner, our reservations were for 3:45pm & we're seated around 3:55pm. We like to get in before the dinner rush but even at that time it was busy. Ordered the steak and fries, prime rib, a salad and mac n cheese. Service by our waiter, Trey was ok. The prime rib was extremely underwhelming. Very fatty and just k, meh. My steak was well done when I ordered it medium. Trey didn't come by until I was more than halfway done with my dry steak (yet very flavorful) so I wasn't able to tell him they cooked it wrong until then. They made me another steak which came out thicker and cooked the way I asked. We had them bag it up. Our salad had so much dressing that I had to ask for more lettuce to make it edible. I'm giving 2 stars for 2 reasons, 1: I should never have to send anything back to the kitchen in such a nice steakhouses and 2: they don't offer military discount. Do better J. Alexander. It's sad that the most praised item of the meal were the french fries. read more

Our go to place for great food. This time we tried the crab cakes. Slightly expensive but well worth it. True lump crab meat, not the baked mush that so many places serve. Probably better than any we have had on the east coast. Can't wait for the Prosper location to open read more

I've eaten at this restaurant several times in the past in Kansas, and it was fantastic. The experience in Plano was subpar. The service was slow, bad and untimely. We waited a while to place our order and also for the check at the end. The food was the best thing going for them. I would not come back unless I knew the service had improved. No manager stopped by to check on us, so we couldn't voice our concerns. read more

The first time we were there, we wandered in after a show and ended up sitting at the bar for dinner. Great food and fun conversation with folks around us (highly recommend the AVOCADO BOMB (Hand-cut Ahi tuna, crab salad, crispy wontons) and the Texas redfish!). So glad J Alexander's opened in Plano. Enjoyed the one in Austin. Beautiful restaurant . Suggestion to make reservations so you get seated right away. The staff is very professional and welcoming . They had lots of different appetizers that sounded good. We got the edamame and enjoyed . For entrées we got the baby back ribs very tender and flavorful) that came with fries and coleslaw. I got salmon ordered med well (so it wouldn't come out mushy inside ) with smashed . potatoes. Salmon did come out undercooked so I did send it back. But they corrected it very quickly.. we had their chocolate cake with ice cream. I've also heard their carrot cake is really good too. The bar is huge and was very busy. Very busy... reservations definitely recommended. Once seated, appreciated the service & had good rapport. Food was fine... but, seemed to appeal to an older demographic & covers a wide array of flavors/cuisines. Lots to choose from... nothing was bad, but found different dishes a little heavy handed on seasoning. My general takeaway was I know of many other places that do specific dishes like sushi better (to my taste) at a cheaper price point. Seemed to harken back to days where elevated chain restaurants were more common & popular. Like a better Grand Lux, etc. Unless I need to satisfy a wide array of food preferences, I'll probably stick with my other choices. read more

Beautiful restaurant. J. J. was our server and she is a doll. Very knowledgeable and extremely kind and helpful. The Grilled Artichokes with Remoulade made in-house were excellent. Haven't had that since Houston's in Addison. The Queso with Spinach and a very unique Salsa was excellent as well. The Filet Mignon with Baked Potato was cooked to perfection. The Salmon was very good as well. Now for the best part, the Carrot Cake was, well the best I've ever had! So moist and fresh. Take my advice and get it, you will thank me. I heard that the food was good, and yes it is! I ordered the crab cakes - delish! The dinner came with 2 large crab cakes made with Jumbo lump crab meat, mi mail breading and just a tin layer of panko crumbs on to and bottom. Perfecto! The hubby had Redfish with a Tasso gravy. Out of this world! Tasso gravy is a little spicy for be ready for that. They have us their signature warm carrot cake for dessert and all we could was moan in harmony with the first bite. The meal was good overall. The exception of the calamari (from Pt. Judith, Rhode Island) was pretty small with not much taste. I am from the Ocean State and know Pt. Judith. I hesitated at first since it was "just a hamburger," but it ended up being incredibly flavorful and fantastic. The shoestring fries were great as well. I also ordered a chocolate cake to go; it was a bit dense for my taste, though that may be because I'm not a big chocolate‑cake lover. Service - (5.0) - Our waitstaff was excellent--very attentive and checked on us regularly. Ambiance (5.0) - At 3:00 p.m., the restaurant felt welcoming, casual, and comfortable. I was celebrating my 50th birthday with a group of friends. The reservations was for 8:15pm. - We didn't get seated until nearly 8:45pm on a Tuesday night. Manager came by but his words seemed very scripted and we never saw him again. Ordered drinks, the drinks didn't come out for a very long time and the drinks was actually wrong but we just kept it as we didn't want to wait even longer. The food was great and that came out in a timely manner. I was given a carrot cake dessert. That was very good. Pretty sure that wasn't free but it's ok. Well worth the price. The food was great but the service and experience wasn't great at all. I would rather go to Eddie V's than come back here. read more

First off the service was great! No complaints about that at all. However, if I were the manager I would want honest feedback for the future :) I am not sure about the other dishes but the trout was great. The french dip was meh. I felt other restaurants french dips were better at lower price points. Now lets talk about the fries! It is hard to mess up a french fry and who doesnt love some good salty fries right! The fries were so salty we both could only eat a few of them before thinking that it was a practical joke or something being so salty. They looked amazing but holy crap. First impression is everything. New restaurant, opened only one month. Very nice decor and atmosphere. First waiter did not smile and had a very cold personality. Second waiter so much better. It took 15 minutes to get our appetizer! Another waitress with our appetizer but confused which table to deliver to and too it back to the kitchen. 10 minutes later our waiter brought a very warm queso dip.. 15 minutes later still no food. We were so hungry we scraped all the queso from the bowl and ate all the chips. we had to call the manager who checked on our food and came back later with no food and stated it was coming. We told the manager to cancel our food after waiting almost 25 minutes. He offered to pay for our meal if we waited but it was taking so long and we saw the quality of the food as it was coming from the kitchen and did not want to wait and take the chance to be even more disappointed . Went there this week just for happy hour with a friend. Really thought website said they had a happy hour daily 3-6, however they do not. Regular menu, regular prices. Sat pretty close to bar at a regular table but not in bar. I only had 1 drink, my friend had a drink & appetizers. Service was good. I was a little worried since we were taking a regular table and not eating/drinking much but all went well! Server was friendly and everything came out fairly quickly. The bar area was very busy! (On a Tue night). One thing I liked is that they mention ON menu that they pour a 7oz glass. One slight con is that the restaurant is DARK. Our car broke down in the parking lot and staff was fire (much like our car), but Nate came out and checked on us multiple times and was prepared to fix the car himself, on top of offering us refreshments while we waited on the tow truck. As is the case for all things that come to the area from out of state, there's been a lot of buzz and long wait times to get seated here. So, to bypass this I decided to make a reservation online for lunch while we were out on Saturday. No issues when we arrived. We were seated quickly. Ambiance and layout are nice, casual, with the bar in the center and an open kitchen in the rear. The food was very good. We decided on comfort food options- the French dip and the chicken strips. Both were very good and very large portion sizes. This just means we'll be enjoying them later too! Our server, Imani, was great. She was attentive without hovering and genuine in her conversations with us. I would actually go out of my way to request her on my next visit. The 4 instead of 5 stars was only based on the time it took to get the food. I could tell that this is an area still being fine tuned, so obviously offer them grace in this area if you decide to go. read more

Although we weren't impressed by our lunch orders (partner's Mac and cheese tasted nothing like the description, burger was under-done), going here simply for their outstanding key lime pie is worth the trip! The management is extremely anxious to please, and gave us this fabulous dessert to make up for the side dish we didn't like. The pie slice is huge, with thick delicious graham cracker crust...and the deep key lime center has just the right combo of tang and sweetness. Trust me, it alone is worth the trip! read more

I loved J Alexander's when I lived in LA so I was so excited to see it opening in Plano! It was just as good as I remembered!! Also, the service was great especially for only being opened a couple weeks. They didn't seem to have any kinks to iron out as so many restaurants do when they first open. I love the veggie burger (& I'm not vegetarian)! My mom got the fish special and living in LA, she is very picky when it comes to fish, and she loved it! We will definitely be back! read more

We were so excited to dine at J. Alexander's tonight as we have been long time fans since our years in San Antonio. We enjoyed everything!! We shared the Cesar Salad, the BBQ Ribs and Black Grouper special. All were prepared perfectly and were absolutely delicious. We added a side a Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese and it was spot-on. As if we were not over the top full and taking home delicious leftovers - we did indulge in a warm carrot cake. Amazing! Our server Nia was outstanding and her friendly outgoing personality made for a fun dining experience. Thank you Nia! The wait was going to be about 30 minutes when we got there. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch for an event we were going to, I asked if we could sit at the bar. We were told we could. Service wasn't overly prompt, but I could tell they were all working hard and were friendly, so we just took in all that was going on around us. I ordered my friend the Grilled Salmon with Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese. The salmon was good, but in my personal opinion my sister-in-laws mac & cheese is better. I had the Texas Redfish with broccoli and spaghetti squash. They were very attentive to my seed oil sensitivity which I greatly appreciated. The portions are HUGE, so if you go, keep that in mind, to either share or take some home with you. Overall not a bad experience, but not sure I see myself returning either. Not a bad thing. I am just a foodie and I have to really be wowed to return to a place more than once. read more
