Let me start out with ... We love J. A. at The Quarry. Been a customer since the doors opened. We go at least 2 -3x a month, often more . It doesn't give me pleasure to write a bad review however the manager needs to know our experience because it wasn't good . Dec 20, 2025, 6 of us went for birthday celebration. As always drinks were good , food great , service exceptional except for a favorite dish we always order French Dip. 2 of us ordered and each meal was not edible . The meat was dried out , had a strange - almost tasteless character and was not fresh or a good color. 1 person did not eat if , the other my husband took his home hoping if was not that bad the next day .... Wrong . Why didn't we complain during the meal ? We were entertaining business associates and didn't feel it was a kosher thing to do . I wish I would have. Our daughter wanted steak for Christmas Eve dinner and wanted a place fancier than Salt Grass, but not as fancy as Ruth Chris. So we booked J. Alexanders because they also have a wide assortment of menu items. We had eaten there years ago and it was excellent. I ordered the J Lohr Merlot and our waiter came back and told me they were out. So I ordered the Predator Zinfandel. When I got home I realized they still charged me for the Merlot that was not available. On this visit the experience and food wasn't like I remembered. We started with Caesar and the Alex's salad. Both were large for side salads and the greens were fresh. The rustic croutons were very good. Our waiter wasn't very personable. We didn't even know his name until we got the check. My daughter got the NY Strip and mac and cheese. The steak had good taste, but was a little tough. The mac and cheese was good, but not phenomenal. I had the chef special Tuscan Steak with twice baked potato. The steak had a good taste, but it was also a but tough. Not sure what cut it was. The jalapeño gets right to the spot where any hotter and it's not pleasurable. The filet Caesar is wonderful too but the star off the show is the salmon dip! We've been going to J Alexander's for over 20 years, while living in Kansas City and San Antonio. It's been a favorite of ours and up until now, we've never left the restaurant without leaving the completely satisfied with the food and service ... until this last Friday. I took my wife to the Basse Rd J Alexander's for her birthday. As always, the service was great. My wife loved her meal. I ordered their plumb sauce Baby back Ribs as advertised on their menu. These have been a twenty year favorite of mine. I knew exactly what to expect and waited with great anticipation. First bite, I knew something was wrong. The ribs were covered with a pepper sauce, that had some kick to it. I'm sure some folks would love them. I didn't. Just so happened, a manager came by to ask us how the meal was going and I asked if they had changed their recipe. He said that they recently changed, and he had gotten some folks who did not like them, and maybe with more customer feedback, J Alexander's would go back to the original plumb recipe. He left and I was never asked about my meal again. I think the manager was afraid I'd complain and want a refund - so no one asked. My 3 stars may be harsh, but I was very disappointed and I can't believe they didn't clearly state they were using a new recipe... in fact it said plumb sauce in the menu description. I shouldn't be used as a Guinee Pig for taste testing and feedback. I ate about 1/3 of my ribs, helped my wife eat her steak, ate my fries and coleslaw, and still left unfulfilled. They gave my wife a free carrot cake dessert which was nice, and everything else was tasty, as we come to expect from our 20 years experience there - except the ribs. I gave the rest of my ribs to our son - also his favorite, but he ended up as disappointed as I was. For me, their ribs have become ho-hum and I would never order them again. And no, we didn't take it out on our waiter, who was excellent, and tipped him accordingly. read more

The ambience in the restaurant is very romantic with low lighting and the service is always impeccable. We both started with a side salad which is always fresh, crunchy and served with delicious house made croutons. They have that GOOD ranch, IYKYK! My better half ordered the ribs that came with the housemaid, coleslaw, and french fries. I always enjoy their coleslaw, but he prefers coleslaw to be a little more wet. The shoestring, french fries are always delicious and crispy. The ribs were tender and well seasoned but unfortunately, on this night, they were cold. Very room temperature at best but because they tasted really well he didn't send them back (I would've asked our server to put them back on the fire for a few). I opted for the chicken tender platter which came out piping hot, juicy and well seasoned. Trust me when I tell you that you will find the most out of this world mac and cheese you will ever find, anywhere. I really only ate dinner so I could get to the dessert portion. J Alexander's has the best carrot cake I've ever had, personally. No, I will not share, no you cannot have "just a taste", don't look at it, smell it or even imagine how good and decadent it is! YES! I was on a late night steak and fries craving, this place was open so I decided to check it out. Honestly this place is underrated, I feel like no one really talks about it as they do other commercial steak houses. The service was great, super friendly staff and knowledgeable. The New York strip was over cooked, we ordered medium rare and the waitress took it back no questions asked. The manager brought the new steak out and stayed to make sure it was to our liking. I ordered the marinated ribeye, and unfortunately I wasn't impressed. It had a sweet teriyaki sauce flavor and ruined the steak in my opinion. My mom ordered the prime rib and it was amazing. One is the best meals I've had in a long time. I came to J. Alexander's today to grab some takeout. They have curbside ordering and paper menus. However I placed my order inside at the bar. I ordered the steak Maui, the mac & cheese, and a slice of carrot cake to go. My steak was deliciously marinated and cooked perfectly medium well as I'd ordered. It was huge and so juicy, just melted in my mouth. The Mac n cheese was well seasoned and sooo cheesy. Loved it! The carrot cake!!! OMG!! The portion size was just perfect aka huge!! And it was sooo good! I can't place my finger on the icing- it tasted more like buttercream than cream cheese. Whatever it was it was certainly delicious! Four star review based primarily on the great service from Jaír (sp) on Friday 10/22/21 about 30 minutes to close. It has been years since I lasted visited J Alexander's and I've never been to this location. I remembered they were known for the prime rib. But, I didn't want anything that heavy, so ordered the steak tacos and my friend had the fish sandwich. She raved about the fish and orzo/wild rice side dish. She also enjoyed her lemon drop martini especially the way it was presented with a small carafe with enough for a second drink. . The steak in my tacos was delicious but the cold relish, lettuce and tortilla just distracted from the goodness of the steak so I just ate the good part. I had a spicy jalapeño margarita which was tasty. The meal fell down on desert for me. The chocolate cake was very rich and dense but the flavor reminded me of a Little Debbie brownie. I took a piece of key lime pie home to my daughter and we both noted that it seemed old. Perhaps due to it being late at end of the week. Anyhoo the food for me was ok. I look forward to returning to get the prime rib or steak they are known for. Getting back to Jaír, I was super impressed. He handled our table better than servers at more expensive places like J Prime, Perry's, Silo, Ruth Chris. It was especially nice given how short staffed most restaurants are these days. I hope J Alexander's knows what a gem they have! His service was 5 star. Food was 3 star for me, hence 4 stars total. My fiancé and I had a late valentines date here and J Alexanders did not disappoint. It was our first time there and I'm so glad we finally tried it out! Not sure why nobody talks about this place?! Celebrated 2 occasions Valentine's Day and My sons birthday. He requested a steak dinner. We arrived at the restaurant at 4pm. Since it was a holiday we figured we beat the dinner crowd. Table of 4 was readily available. The ambiance was definitely a vibe. Restaurant was clean and the staff was attentive and friendly. We made it through service without a hitch! Started off with the Deviled Eggs and Spinach Queso accompanied by a pico de gallo. Delicious! The queso was piping hot, chips were thin and crispy. The deviled eggs were a hit with my family. They were a combination of smoky sweet and savory flavor. I prefer the filling a bit Creamier but still a flavorful appetizer. They came in a order of 6. We also shared 2 Caesar salads. Serving was definitely large enough. Lettuce was crisp and chilled,lightly coated dressing and house made croutons. I had the soup of the day, chicken pasta soup. Very creamy broth and filled with bite size veggies. I was able to identify mushrooms, carrots, celery, green beans, bits of chicken and pasta. I asked for a side of bread or crackers. I was given a plate of 4 slices of very fresh sourdough bread and 2 pads of butter with herbs. Really enjoyed it. Hubby had a steak burger which I read on menu that the steak is ground up daily. The burger was definitely juicy and beautifully cooked to perfection. We asked for fries to be extra crispy and they delivered. My son had steak and fries. Now we asked for medium and it did come back more on the well side. However, there is a disclaimer that some marinated meats might come out that way. Nevertheless it was tender, juicy and full of flavor. My daughter ordered the cilantro shrimp. The portion is huge! A grilled shrimp skewer over a bed of rice with a heaping side of coleslaw. We also enjoyed a princess duchess cocktail. Not sure if it's on regular menu but it was a fragrant sparkling cocktail. Very cute and dainty. I would say 3.5. My wife and I wanted a place that had prime rib and we remembered we had been there a few years ago and they had it so we tried it out. We arrived early and had a couple of drinks at the bar. 13$ each for a bourbon and coke. We were seated and Meredith was our server. She did a fantastic job and was very attentive, talkative and informative. We had the fish dip appetizer and it was good. The caesar salad was ok but I prefer mine with more zing to it. Kind of dull. The prime rib cooked perfectly, but taste wise was just ok. I have had better. The horse radish and au jus were diluted down and not a lot of flavor. The smashed potatoes were really, really good. The hostess offered us a booth but we asked for a table, so rather than putting us at the larger table in that area, she took us further into the restaurant, up a few stairs and sat us at a 4-top. Fine, but why? The restaurant was VERY dark. We all ordered the same thing: prime rib sandwich. It was not hot. And very tough, hard to eat without looking like an animal. The French fries were good. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. Although he did forget to bring one of the desserts, but that was probably for the best.
