We've been going to J Gilbert's for years and enjoy it! One of my daughters chooses it for her birthday dinner every year and we go other times as well. We've been there in groups of two to eight people. The place always looks very clean and is decorated in an understated manner. We're always greeted warmly and seated right away. Our server always come for front orders within a few minutes of being seated. I'm not sure we've ever had a bad server there. This past weekend, we had Chris and he was great! We feel a server can make a good meal even better. He had a great personality and meshes well with the six of us. The cocktails are yummy! I usually have trouble deciding which I want. They bring out some good bread with regular and flavored butter. We had a few appetizers for the table. All of our food was pretty good. I could have given them four stars after this visit, but almost every other time it was a five so I went with that. My husband got the Chilean sea bass and it was over cooked. I had the appetizer crab cakes as my entree and one of them was way too salty and I couldn't eat it. This is an unusual occurrence. A couple weeks ago I booked a room for my birthday dinner. Which means $150 deposit made and gratuity is automatically added on to the whole bill. I was charged for a nasty tasting alcohol beverage that I never even touched after a sip. Asked the served many times to take it away she wouldn't. Service was also terrible as the lady was in and out of our room serving to many tables seemed like to me because her attention span was short. She was asking ppl if they were ready to order but when one responded yes, she walked away. That was rude she was also very forgetful with things that were asked for such as a kid menu for my son. But again tip was auto included, which means you would think that service would be on point. Many ppl complained about their food. There were to many gnats flying around when certain foods came out and also the manager that night kept peeping in and out of my dinner party for no reason before the whole party had arrived that was also weird. He also had a nasty attitude about splitting the bill. Subpar service and food was not bad at least mine was. But slot of my party had complaints about it. Prob will never go bck. read more

After many hours on a road trip, we were lucky enough to land in this fantastic and beautiful steak house. The steaks were beyond wonderful, tender and very flavorful. Delicious, perfectly prepared asparagus and whipped potatoes were great accompaniments as was an outstanding bottle of The Prisoner. Apple croustade with vanilla ice cream finished a memorable meal. Last night to celebrate my moms birthday, we stopped by in St. Louis! This is always a must for my family when we're in the area and it never disappoints. We started off dinner with their famous blue cheese chips and their shrimp cocktail to share. The shrimp were perfect and the sauces pair so well. If you've never had the blue cheese chips you're totally missing out. They pour a warm blue cheese sauce over thin and crisp homemade chips... absolutely to die for. We also got the blue cheese wedge which can never be beat. J Gilberts also gives complimentary sourdough bread for the table with homemade whipped butter. This piping hot bread is quite possibly my heaven. For our mains, my parents split the ribeye and I got the filet. For our sides we got the asparagus, creamed corn with bacon, and au gratin potatoes. Since it was my moms birthday, she got a free dessert which consisted of the cheesecake but we also wanted to split the coconut cake! We also ended the night we some beautiful espresso martinis! Some of the highlights for us were the blackberry martini, the creamed corn, and the appetizers. Our waitress was attentive and personable. She made sure my mom got her birthday dessert. So I picked up a catering order from this restaurant and my review is based solely on pickup plus food taste. Pickup was a breeze, I arrived earlier than opening time. To my surprise a staff member answered the phone and assured me my order was ready. It was delivered to my vehicle touchless with instructions on handling and reheating. My wife & I called to see if they could see us around 8:30 or so and they thought it would be possible so we headed over to J Gilbert's. We were celebrating a birthday and once we sat down we were asked "any special occasions that you're here to celebrate?". We were pleased to hear that they may have an accommodation/ dessert, they did not. I ordered an IPA & my wife ordered a Tropical Breeze (very good). So we were also given sourdough bread along with regular butter & pastrami smoked butter (not my favorite but not too bad). We ordered wedge salads each and was the highlight of the meal for sure, very very good! Next, entrees came and we both ordered the Prixfixe. I went with a "medium temperature" 6 oz filet with Yukon mashed potatoes & asparagus. As you can see in the pictures, the steak was medium-well AT BEST. My wife got the 4 oz filet with scallops and broccolini/ risotto. Those were cooked and seasoned well. The third course of the meal was the desserts (we got them to go), and the strawberry cheesecake and coconut cake were 2 that we would not order again. The experience we had with the interior/ lighting was very intimate and romantic. Maybe it was because we got there so late, but for the price we paid for the meal and the way the meals were cooked...wouldn't be able to give more than a 3 star review. read more

Here's my experience. I chose this restaurant to celebrate a promotion and it truly let me down. I got the 1/2 lb lobster tail. This is what I was expecting in the pic. I received two tiny lobster tails. So I tried to ask the server, were you out of the 1/2 lb lobster tail? He responded "2 4 oz tails are a 1/2 a lb". So it was two things wrong with this response, yes I know math but that wasn't my question. I also know what 4 ounces look like and that they were not. They were 3 ounces at best and my husband had to share his scallops with me. 2nd, his drinks consistently came out half full even his mule. The crab cakes were just blah, definitely top of the line crab meat but not much flavor outside of that. Our standard for crab cakes are always measured by the Capital Grille. Server was just ok, he was being impatient with our questions from the start. My husband asked if they had proper mule cups and he goes "everywhere you go if you get a mule it'll be in copper" i jumped in and said actually not true which is why he's asking because if it comes in a glass because yours are dirty he'll send it back, which we've experienced. His response was condescending. We felt there were "assumptions" being made about the caliber of customer he was serving. read more

This place is at the West County Mall on the outside...west side of the mall. When you walk in, you can smell the smoke... not cigarette smoke...the smoke you find at a wood fired grill restaurant. Gilbert's isn't a huge place, but big enough with a mix of a bar area and booths and tables. It is very nice on the inside. But the most important part, the food. We started with the blue cheese potato chips for an appetizer. Home made chips sprinkled with blue cheese and then a blue cheese sauce is poured over them while at the table. From there, I ordered the prix fixed combo which started with crab bisque. They bring the bowl to your table and dropped the crab in the middle so you can see how much you are getting. Then yhe bisques is poured into your bowl....so delicious. Thr main course consisted of a small filet and crabcake with 2 sides. I got creamed corn and lobster Mac and cheese. It followed with a dessert. Holy cow....SO MUCH FOOD!!! Everything was delicious. My wife also got the price fixed but got a wedge salad and maple glazed shrimp. It too was awesome!!! The service was great from our server, Rico. Very professional but not snobby at all. You should ask for him. We've been here many times before, but just finally writing a review. The food here is amazing. Never had a steak cooked wrong. The atmosphere is fine dining but smells like a brick oven inside. The only issue we've had recently was with our past server. The receipt said her name was Katherine but she introduced herself as Katie. She honestly looked high the whole time and spent more time in the bathroom than she did serving. Maybe she was having a bad day, I'm not sure, but when we are spending $500 on a meal, we hope for some good service. That was not the case this time. It was quite disappointing considering we were celebrating a birthday. We will definitely be back but will probably request that we have a different server. read more

My arrival was right at the open and I sat at the bar where I was greeted by 2 awesome and entertaining staff, Robyn & Jeff. Kicked off the evening with a Bourbon Smash, of which I had a second for dessert. Crab Bisque up next and it was the best flavor and velvety smooth texture! Entree time, let's go with the 4oz Filet and Scallop Combo with Asparagus and Au Gratin Potatoes... add Truffle Butter because why not! Amazing meal! Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was the right amount of food where I didn't feel stuffed and definitely felt satisfied.
