HUGE disappointment! Gilbert's has been our go-to steakhouse for years. We've celebrated every special occasion there, and until now, it has always been outstanding. Unfortunately, our most recent visit will likely be our last. We understand that any restaurant can have an occasional off night, but too many things missed the mark this time. Both of our steaks were ordered medium well and arrived undercooked -- quite raw in the center. Mine was also heavily oversalted; my tongue was still burning the next morning. We were also surprised by the recent menu changes. Steaks are no longer served with a baked potato and now come with very bland mashed potatoes instead. Favorite items like the lobster mac and cheese, tortilla soup, and the incredible chocolate ganache cake are no longer offered. When we asked about dessert, we were told we could substitute the new 24-layer cake for an upcharge, and that the server would let us know the cost. That never happened. We only learned at the end of the meal that it was $18 per slice -- an unexpected $36 addition to the bill. After adding valet parking and the various upcharges, it became a very expensive evening for what was, unfortunately, a mediocre meal. This was disappointing, especially given how much we've loved Gilbert's over the years. read more

Amazing experience. Upscale, but not fancy. You can dress up for a fun night, or just look decent and have a great time. All of the staff were amazing. We even made a last-minute change to our reservation and they handled it in stride. Not a hint of irritation or hesitation to make sure we enjoyed our time there. Wonderful selection of steaks and some great specials. At our table we had two steaks, lamb, and chicken pasta. Everyone loved their meal. The steaks will be priced as expected, but they come with two sides. There are plenty of add-ons to enhance your steaks as well. If you want a non-steak option, they have plenty of those, too. The calamari was pretty good, but the shrimp "something something" was the hit of the table. The chicken person said they could have just ordered more of that for a meal. I loved the drink menu and enjoyed a well-presented smoked Manhattan. It's worth ordering just for the experience. Obviously, they have a full bar and excellent wine selection. The desserts were tasty and huge. Very shareable. We had two for a table of four. Our server was happy to help with this (and all other) selections. The pacing was perfect, too. Great service and environment. Modern look and we sat at the bar to watch the game. Plenty of great wine choices and service was great. Fish was so tender and flavored very well. Finished it like a brand new dish. It was a chefs special to ask for that anytime you go. My colleague had a steak and did a $55 trio where you pick a side, meat and dessert. Unique was they came by and asked which knife we'd like to use as we had choices in a nice drawer which he walked over with. My partner and I happened to be passing through Omaha shortly after our anniversary, and knowing steaks are famous in Omaha, we wanted to try somewhere that was nicer but not out of our price range. I'm glad we found J Gilbert, as it fit exactly what we wanted. Our server (whose name I don't know, sorry : ( ) was very kind and helpful throughout the process. We both ordered the prix fixe menus and I got a glass of zinfandel. Appetizers -- I got French onion soup, partner got salad. The soup was really good! Salad was salad, but my partner liked it, haha. Main dish -- we both got the 14oz ribeye. Partner got cauliflower au gratin and loaded baked potato, I got creamed corn with bacon and at our server's suggestion, the green beans with pecans. Steaks were delicious, cooked the way we wanted, and the green beans were a great choice to balance out the richness of the steak. The other sides were good too, but the green beans were my fave. We were already so full but there was still dessert to go! I ordered the creme brulee and partner got the carrot cake. The creme brulee was, no joke, one of the best things I've eaten. It was perfectly creamy, sweet, and the fruit worked well with it. I'm a get straight to it... THE BEST MEAL THAT I'VE HAD ALL YEAR! By that I mean complete all around, every item, no misses. I went on halloween and I didn't know what to expect. I had a flight into the city and I was pretty hungry so on the flight I was looking up steakhouses in the area. I am a sucker for charred steak so when I seen that this was a wood fired steakhouse I was sold. In my uber ride to my hotel, I passed J Gilbert's and I was saddened that it was co-located with the Marriott hotel. I am VERY LEARY when it comes to hotel restaurants... my expectations are very low! Nonetheless I went to my hotel which was only a short walk away, checked in, and headed straight out to get food. The waitress sat me immediately as it was pretty dead. You know what, let me skip the fluff... THAT RIBEYE WAS PERFECTION!!!! PERFECTLY SEASONED, CHARRED, COOKED TO TEMPERATURE AND FLAVOR IN ABUNDANCE! EVERY SINGLE BITE! A great prime cut and VERY moderately priced. $50-60. I don't eat creamed corn but the waitress recommended it so I said sure why not? A HIT!!!! Not too sweet yet flavorful with bacon that added a savory to complement the sweetness. Au Gratin potatoes were elite! Broiled top added a crisp texture while moist layered potatoes were awaiting underneath. I even ordered dessert in the form of Carrot cake and not a fan of coconut as a rule but yes, I ate it all. I will say that the cake comes out cold from being refrigerated but I took it home and it was even better at room temperature. It contains nuts and layers of caramel in between with a mild buttercreme icing. From top to bottom... perfection! J. Gilbert's is proof that a great steak doesn't have to outrageously priced. This is very much a five star steakhouse. We were here celebrating my boyfriend's graduation from law school and they were able to get him a free dessert which was so good! We got the crème brûlée, which was fantastic. My boyfriend said that his steak was the best he's had -- Ever! I'm not sure when the next time we'll be back to Omaha but if we ever do make it back. We will definitely be stopping here. Service is top-notch. You really can't beat it! read more

We were lucky enough to get a reservation on Christmas night. It's lovely having somewhere so beautiful open to enjoy dinner on the holiday. We certainly appreciated the staff being so attentive when they were giving up part of their holiday. We started with cocktails and the charcuterie. The meat and cheeses were the highlight of the meal! Simply delicious! Highly recommend. For dinner we opted for the miso glazed grouper. I'm a serious sucker for miso and grouper, however this did not hit the mark. The miso was tasty, but the grouper was over cooked, and the veggies that were supposed to be accompanying the dish were greatly lacking. I enjoyed our waiter, the atmosphere and the service, and was sad this didn't do it for me. We will certainly go back, and will def opt for steak next time! read more

Hi-Ho There, Kermit thee Frog here with an unfortunate cautionary "tail" (get it?? Well... frogs don't have tails I guess) from J. Gilbert's steakhouse in Omaha Nebraska. Picture me on my lily pad with a napkin tucked under my chin, ready for an evening of fine dining worthy of the Grand Muppet Banquet. I selected their Prix Fix menu thinking I might feel like royalty on The Muppet Show set. My culinary adventure began with a Caesar salad so crisp it might have earned a standing ovation from Fozzie Bear himself. The lettuce was fresh enough to inspire a joke or two, though the dressing could have used a bit more punch to rival one of Statler and Waldorf's zingers. Next up was the ribeye steak, a cut so tender I almost crooned Rainbow Connection aloud. Its texture could charm even Gonzo the Great into giving up one of his daredevil stunts. Yet it arrived underseasoned, leaving me wishing Swedish Chef were on hand to sprinkle in some secret blend of herbs and spices with his trademark "bork bork bork" flair. Then came dessert, a carrot cake that seemed auditioning for Animal's drum solo with all that fondant pounding the stage. Cake itself was delightful but only about twenty five percent of the plate, the rest a sugar heavy production that left me feeling more like a marshmallow than a refined dessert enthusiast. My dinner companion ordered the bisque which was silky smooth enough to win over Rowlf the Dog, then devoured crab cakes so crisp they could outshine Miss Piggy's golden heels, and finished with classic vanilla ice cream that would make Scooter proud. The total came to about one hundred sixty five dollars which seemed fair for a meal of this calibre if not for one unfortunate encore. A couple of hours later both of us were croaking out discomfort far more pitiful than any muppet mishap. The only shared indulgence was those blue cheese chips which apparently staged a midnight rebellion in our stomachs. As tasty as they were at curtain call those chips may have been the true villain of the evening. So here is my final tally two out of five stars. The food dazzled like a Muppet musical number yet the postshow sickness means this frog and friend will not be hopping back to J. Gilbert's again any time soon read more

Service was great, busy place but we got right in on. Friday night. Food was also great. We had apps, drinks, and main course steak and salmon. All cooked to perfection. Server was very attentive even though busy. We'll come back here more often. Bill was $100 bucks or more with a very good tip for very good service for two of us. It was worth it for the nice evening we had. Parking is a bit tricky, take the city lot which is $5 and right by the restaurant so you can enter the restaurant from the garage. J. Gilbert's has been our "special occasion" go-to place for a while now, and it never gets old! The ambiance is warm and classy, with high ceilings and flickering fireplaces lining the walls. This would definitely be a great place for an anniversary or business dinner, etc. The service is top notch, with every single host and server we've had in our many times here. They are always very welcoming and knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and also make great recommendations if you tell them what you're craving/looking for! So, onto the amazing food now: We almost always get the prix-fixe menu, but I switch up my starter, main course/sides, and dessert, to not get burnt out on any one thing (they're all available as menu and a la carte items, too, if you don't want to do the prix-fixe). Below are our favorites! Starters: On the prix-fixe menu, you can choose between a soup or salad as your starter. I have had the Caesar salad a few times (and it's great/well dressed and HUGE), but my favorite is the Maryland Crab Bisque. It's so creamy and silky and has big chunks of crab that arrive in the bowl, with the bisque then poured over it table-side. If you like crab, do not skip this! Mains: My husband and I have a few favorites we've tried. They are the Maple Plank Roasted Salmon (my fav) and the Duroc Pork Chop (his fav). -The Maple Plank Salmon is mouthwatering, cut-with-a-spoon tender and flaky, and it's topped with a yummy bourbon maple glaze (I get an extra side of the glaze, it is just that delicious). They will come around with the knife tray for you to choose for your dish, but trust me, you won't even need one. -The Duroc Pork Chop comes cooked to preference, and is topped with a scrumptious mixture of fruity toppings (raisiny style fruit bits). If you are familiar with having apple sauce with pork chops, then you know how tasty this combo is, no matter how weird it sounds. Regardless of which entree we get, we always share with each other so we can taste-test the deliciousness of each others' dishes. Sides: The prix-fixe menu items come with two set sides that are listed on the menu, but you can switch them out for any other sides you like. Here are our favorites! -Creamed Corn with Bacon: This is our top favorite and it is to DIE for! Creamy corn mixture with giant bits of perfectly cooked bacon. I'm drooling just thinking about it now. -Poblano Au Gratin Potatoes: These are so divine. A little skillet of potatoes comes out filled with these cheesy, creamy layers of potatoes. And the serving size is so large, it can definitely be shared with the rest of the table (if you're nice and let them have any, that is). -Lobster Mac and Cheese: Now this one does come with an up-charge if you swap one of your sides for it, but it's soooo worth it. The mac and cheese itself is ooey gooey cheesy delightful, but add in the heavenly lobster flavor, and it's so exquisite and hedonistically tasty. Desserts: The prix-fixe menu also comes with your choice of dessert, and here are the ones we've loved on our visits! -Carrot Cake: This is my husband's favorite dessert on the menu. He actually came in as a carrot cake hater (I know, WHAT) but he left a convert and is now addicted to the J. Gilbert's carrot cake. It has rich and thick carrot cake layers between a few stripes of a pecan filling in the middle, and a custard creme frosting on top. It's carrot, though, so it's technically healthy! Haha -Chocolate Velvet Cake: This is my go-to dessert usually, and it's so scrumptious. A chocolate cake filled with chocolate mousse and a chocolate ganache on top (with raspberry ice cream on the side for a nice pairing). I'm making myself hungry again just thinking about it. A normal person probably couldn't finish this after having bread, soup, an entree, and two sides, but oh - I find the strength. -New York Cheesecake: This was a dessert that was on special when we came once, so it's not always on the menu. But if you go and it is there, get it! It is so light and fluffy, with a topping of tangy strawberry compote. This is a dessert that will satisfy your sweet tooth but won't make you completely burst after your big meal. To sum it all up, J. Bring back the old Caesar salad. J Gilbert's used to have my favorite Caesar salad in Omaha. They would their fresh bread to make croutons and used to have a lovely and large Parmesan crisp on top. Now they have completely removed the croutons.. I have never in my life seen a Caesar salad served without croutons. They also now just have Parmesan crisp crumbles on top.. used to love the big one to break up myself. They also apparently stopped cutting the lettuce so you can do the labor and cut it yourself. Same price too. Pretzel crusted onion also used to be a favorite. They are now sub par. Breading has completely changed and that was the best part. Such a shame. We used to be regularly but not sure we will be back again by choice. Wait staff is lovely and ambience is nice but food is no longer worth the price. I'll also note we've made reservations numerous times and many times have still waited 20+ minutes. read more

Don't come here if you want your steaks cooked correctly or if you expect them to remedy the problem. Came here with my boyfriend and his parents. We all had simple orders. We all just got ribeyes. We got 2 medium rare, 1 rare, and 1 medium. They got them all wrong except for one. Luckily two of us love steak and can fluctuate with temps so no big deal. One of us who got the medium specifically asked for no red. She basically got rare. We all basically got rare. For these prices you would think they could get this right. It was sent back and this time it was medium rare - still wrong. At this point we're basically half way thru our meal and she just had to sit there and watch us eat. The only thing they offered was a free dessert. What a cheap cop out when we're paying $65 per steak. Real customer service would've been to say they took it off since they messed up TWICE. The table next to us also sent their steak back. Laughable. Won't come back. Wouldn't recommend. There's way better steak places that will cook your steak right or at least treat you better when THEY mess up. I feel bad for the waiter - it wasn't his fault, but management has no idea how to remedy a situation. read more

This was our first time here and it was before Bocelli at the CHI Health Center. Bocelli was fabulous and the food here was nearly as good. We had to have Chianti and it was a nice one. I had a ribeye and my date had the salmon. We both loved our dishes. The mushrooms side dish wasn't super flavorful, but it was serviceable. I liked the tradition of selecting steak knives and I, of course, selected the French bee knife. I had the cheesecake while Sue had the chocolate cake with raspberry on top. She completely loved it. I'll always remember this dinner on Feb 6 as I surprised Sue and gave her a gold Celtic heart necklace. This was our first visit to J Gilbert but it won't be the last. Every bite was fabulous. We started with the Oysters Rockefeller and then both had the Prix Fixe Menu with the 12 oz. Prime Strip. My sides were the asparagus and the scalloped potatoes. The scalloped potatoes were the best I've ever had, simply amazing! My husband had for sides the lobster mac and the mushrooms. The mushrooms were described as wild mushrooms but were all standard button mushrooms. They were good, but not worth the upcharge. The steak were amazing, the seasoning on them added great flavor and they were cooked perfectly. We were tickled by the steak knife selections being offered, never had that before and it was a great touch. For dessert we had the crème brulee and the chocolate velvet cake. I don't frequent steakhouses very often, but this was among the best steaks I've ever had, if not the best. The seasoning they use is perfect and their mashed potatoes are divine.
