I wish I did not have to change my rating to 1 star, as I have loved this place over the years. But it seems I have to beg them to not overcook my steak, and even then they still do. I had experienced 3 straight visits where I ordered a filet medium rare and it came out as medium plus or even medium well. To be fair, they always try to take care of it and apologize, but it still gets frustrating. Despite my better judgment, and thinking there's no way this could happen FOUR times in a row, my wife and I tried again on a Sunday evening. I even expressed to the bartender my past experience. I know he can't go back to the kitchen and say "hey can you get it right", but I would think he could have mentioned in advance to a manager something like "hey these guests are giving us another chance despite past problems, so can we double check their steaks before sending them out?" But instead he just seemed indifferent. And so, my medium rare request resulted in a nearly medium well filet. And my wife's medium well request came out an almost overcooked well. No one checked on us, so I had to get the bartender's attention to send mine back. He took the entire plate, not even leaving me with the sides to at least have something to eat. My wife chose not to send hers back. In sincerity, because I have really liked this place, I asked the bartender what I could possibly do to get my steak prepared properly the first time. He just mumbled something about how it happens sometimes. My replacement came back very undercooked. And then it came out overcooked again. It was only on the third attempt that a manager finally approached us to apologize. I am not writing this as an angry customer, but rather as one who really just wants to be able to eat when he visits here, but cannot figure out how to get a filet cooked medium rare. read more

We went out tonight to celebrate Father's Day before the crowd on Sunday. Ordered the pan baked chicken - VERY DISAPPOINTING. It looked like a cooked parakeet as far as the size of the portion. We stopped in for happy hour and it made me remember how much we like the food here. Plus, I love a happy hour that includes food and drink specials. I had the shrimp Durango, hubby had the sliders and we tried a Smoked Old Fashioned and Manhattan. The food was definitely the star of the show. Had an outstanding dinner on June 8th evening! Raven, our server, was amazing! Our meals were completely as ordered. For example, our ribeye and prime rib were delicious and to die for. First off, i would like to thank our waiter, St. John. He was so kind and helped to make our 4-year anniversary special. His personality really set the bar for us. If you ever go to J Gilberts, request for saint john. He was very attentive to our table and continuously asked if we needed anything and made us feel very special and important on our special day. It had been years since I had visited and I'm not sure why! I ordered from the prix fixe menu. Chicken tortilla soup, filet with mashed potatoes and a velvet chocolate cake. Steak was divine, juicy and perfectly cooked. Potatoes weren't anything spectacular. The cake came with whipped cream and raspberry sorbet. It was rich and decadent! When a place is this expensive and highly regarded you expect better. First, our server had attitude. I tried several times to engage and joke and just got rudeness back except for one time she did laugh. I ordered wine and my mom had a martini. Neither of us was offered another drink. She asked if we needed anything and then never brought what we asked for. She was hardly around and I had to stop other servers to get her. Second, we were never given bread. It wasn't until the end of the meal that another server brought it to the table behind us that we realized we should have gotten some. He was super apologetic. Wish he'd been our server. Third, our appetizer wasn't all that good. We ordered calamari. So many other things were fried and put on the plate, jalapeños, carrot straws, and who knows what else. I didn't order a place of fried things. We wanted calamari and barely had enough for each of us (4 people) to have enough. Forth, the food wasn't spectacular. Like in any way. It was just eh. I ordered my steak a little too done for my liking but the flavor wasn't there. A good steak needs nothing added. I had to add steak sauce and Tabasco on this. It was super tender. Just flavorless. I ordered a 6 oz medium rare filet mignon with a baked potato and the chef's mushrooms in truffle butter. The baked potato was generic. The mushrooms were...well, eh. Everything was just eh (insert shoulder shrug) Tip: be sure to ask how their temperatures on steaks work. Medium rare is more medium than I've ever had. She said that but I guess I didn't quite realize. I was in the wrong here not our server. Fifth, dessert was blah. We had crème brûlée. The custard was hot. The glaze was good and cracked nicely. The Food was not fully cooked and the wait time to get our food after ordering it took forever, our server took forever to wait on our table for our order and was not, then the server charged my order the incorrect way and said that there was miscommunication when I clearly pointed inside the menu to show the server what I would like. We booked reservations for 6 well in advanced for my dad's 60th birthday. We never pick upscale restaurants but it was a very special occasion and wanted to make it a great and memorable evening for my dad. If the rating was based on food alone, it'd easily be 5 stars. The food was fantastic. I had the 8oz filet with green beans and potatoes au gratin, and those potatoes were the the best I've ever had. I would also highly recommend the pineapple martini. The unfortunate part of our experience was our server, Raquel B. Her attitude from the get go was poor. She only took 4 of our 6 drink orders. When we had to ask her about placing the 2 other drink orders, when she came back to our table, she was very put off and both my mom and I saw her roll her eyes as she started to walk off. She never asked us if we wanted any additional drinks either. For a $400 dinner, we we're pretty displeased with the service. Had we had a better server we could've easily spent another $100+ on drinks. I wanted to provide this feedback to the manager however since it was my dad's birthday, I didn't think it was appropriate timing. We'd love to go back for other special occasions, but the service left such a poor taste that we likely will take our business elsewhere. read more

Had dinner here during our stop in Kansas City because we wanted to have some steak. We were waited on by Suzan, who was an absolute gem. We ordered our drinks, and they came out fairly quickly. To start, I ordered a caesar salad, and my boyfriend ordered the shrimp. The salad came with parmigiano reggiano, sourdough croutons, and an asiago cheese crisp. It was great! The shrimp in the cocktail were large, and my boyfriend really enjoyed them. For our meal, we both ordered the Kansas City strip. The steaks were cooked perfectly, and they were melt in your mouth good. We ordered the au grain potatoes, creamed corn with bacon, brussel sprouts, and wild mushrooms for the sides. First I recommend you make reservations as they were at capacity on a Tuesday night, so I am sure every night is busy. I was having dinner with 2 out of town friends from work. We had a bottle of Château Bel Air Gloria Bordeaux, very nice red and it paired with steak wonderfully. We all decided to get our meals from the Prix fixe menu. Our food was the highlight of the night! I ordered the house salad to start it was delicious, spring mix greens, grilled corn very nice salad to start with. My friend both ordered the crab bisque they said it was good. For entree I had the 12 oz. Kansas city strip steak with poblano au gratin potatoes and green beans with pecans. I am not much of a steak eater and I usually drowned mine in A1, but not this time. My steak was cooked perfectly and was tender,juicy and full of flavor. The sides were good, I did expect more flavor in the potatoes as it had poblano in the name, but they were good. My friend ordered the Maple plank roasted salmon with a bourbon glaze, it came on a wood plank which he had never seen before as was pleasantly surprised. He shared a piece with me and it was delicious, the glazed made a great crust. We all ordered a different dessert to be able to share, I am not big on sweets. We had the berries and cream, chocolate velvet cake and seven layer cocnut cake. The berries and creme anglaise were light and a perfect end to a great meal. The chocolate velvet cake was very rich, too sweet for my taste but the bite I had was delicious. Seven layer cocnut cake with pineapple ice cream and passion fruit coulis, was delicious enjoyed every bite. The service was okay at the start, we did have a member of our party show up late so the waitress was understanding. It may have thrown her off of her normal service, we had to ask for bread, she asked if we were ready to order and my friend said we were ready and our 3rd said he would need 1 minute and to start with us, just as I started to tell her my order she turned and walked away. We waited 10 minutes and got her attention when we finally saw her and placed our order. Once we received our food service was great, very attentive and friendly. Overall atmosphere is great the restaurant itself is darkly lit with each table having direct light. Not loud, you can talk with out having to worry about background noise. If you are a fan of Pickasso, not Picasso, or Rian Raynolds, not Ryan Reynolds, then you'll love J.Gilbert's, some of the best prepared J. Alexanders-meets-Houston's corporate programmed grazing that you'll find. Quality meats, and vegetables, expertly processed with basic seasonings into soulless, intentionally inoffensive plates that photograph reasonably well. There is this theory, amongst many food service MBAs, that pork has to be drowned in something sweet. My pork chop here was attacked with a hailstorm of raisins. They feel compelled to overkill the veggies, as well. The crab bisque was excellent. The oysters on the half shell were beautiful bluepoints, destroyed by one of the worst mignonettes that I've ever sampled. The crème brûlée on the price-fixe menu was obscenely gritty, and poured shallow enough to make some corporate bean counter's little coal heart skip a cinder. When doing special cocktails, overripe and spoiled blackberries probably don't aid the taste or appearance. Bar is curated MBA pop hits only, in one of the Houston's hide-a-bottle top rack system that projects elegance on to the mainstream mundane. Service was excellent, earning an extra star. They also handle large parties, which is a plus. For the price, I'd take Chophouse over this place any day of the week. They need to find a soul for this place. Ample parking. read more
