We were visiting from NY, our first time in Kansas. Read the reviews and decided this was the best place for a midwestern steak. Loved the rich ambience and cozy dim lighting. Ordered the filet and sirloin, delish. I started with the beautiful house salad with creamy vinaigrette, one of the best I've ever tasted. Ended the meal with assorted ice cream and sorbet, yum. But the most wonderful memory will be MeiLi, our server. From the first smile to the impeccable service, she made J Gilbert a 10 star restaurant. The ambience of the restaurant is great for a nice intimate evening with a partner and the menu has a lot of options that I believe would cover most people's interests. You are served bread with two options for butter and the bread was tasty. I ordered two different martinis the blackberry and the pineapple and they were both really tasty! My favorite was the pineapple. I ordered off of their prix fix menu and there was a ton of food! I started with the ceaser salad and the Parmesan crisps inside the salad were really tasty. My entree was the lamb rack with a loaded baked potato and the roasted carrots. The lamb was cooked well and the sides were good. I had to get my piece of chocolate cake to go because I simply couldn't finish everything! I would definitely recommend going here for a date night. read more

Thankfully secured reservations a few months in advance of Thanksgiving! First time here, had a good time! The Thanksgiving dinner menu was a decked out full 3 course meal, and then they also offered their full menu which was a nice surprise. Everything was delicious. Service was a bit slow but that's to be expected on such a busy night so can't say I noticed much. Recent visit to J Gilbert's was great. We sat at the bar and had some happy hour drinks and nibbles. My friend had some oysters and said they were great. I had the wings- also very good. And the fresh hot bread and smoked butter get me every time. We shared the Seafood grill dinner and it was also very tasty. The chef came out to talk to the person sitting next to me and was getting a nice compliment about the strip steak being cooked perfectly! Drinks are always good- refreshing strawberry margaritas! I was surprised to hear that the restaurant had been around for nearly 30 years. I have to say that every time I have been there it's always consistent and the staff is top notch. This was our first time visiting and while our service was okay our food was just "meh." (And for the price we wanted more than just "meh.") We ordered the pretzel coated onion rings as an appetizer. At $3.20/ring (5 for $16) I would have hoped for a bit more flavor on the onion ring itself. Even just a hint of salt would have been nice. The onion was a bit too crisp for an onion ring. The sauces were really good. Our favorite was the mustard...and we aren't usually mustard fans. The bread was good but we did not enjoy the smoked butter. That is definitely a personal preference on flavor but I told my companion it tasted like what dirty socks smell like. For the main course we had filet mignon and salmon. Part of the filet was cooked medium but the other half was well done...gray with no pink at all. It was tough and chewy and by that point I was ready to go so we didn't ask for something else. The mashed potatoes were delicious! My favorite part of the meal. The salmon was also quite tasty but the asparagus was entirely too smokey and charred for my liking. We did have dessert. My companion loves crème brûlée. The "crème" part was yummy. Nice and creamy. The "brûlée" aspect wasn't our favorite. I don't quite know how to put it in to words but it just seemed off. I can't say we won't come back but with so many other restaurants to check out in the greater KC area, we have a several we will try out first. read more

I've been here a couple times and while the food was great, the service was questionable. First visit everything was amazing but second visit the hosts were dismissive, hardly saw our server and they were also very sour and rude. We were polite during our visit so I'm not sure if they were all having a bad day, but maybe it was because me and my friend that went aren't white. read more

Gilberts and know where to go for the best burger! The wood-fired Wagyu Burger?! The serving size was plentiful; it was moist, flavorful, and delicious, and the shallot jam with watercress was a fabulous accompaniment. The fries were so tasty, cooked to perfection, and abundant. It was our 1st Anniversary and decided to try a nice place that we haven't been to. We thought it was great! Pricey but good for special occasions. Nice ambiance and it was all romantic like from it being darker. They open at 4pm everyday. It was steady when we got there at 5pm. Got little busier as time went on. Our server Suzan was very nice and helpful. I wanted to get the Pineapple Martini and she said it was so great. I like knowing when something is good! It was so refreshing! Their sourdough bread is so good, hot and fresh! And the smoked pepper butter was so good too. Also came with regular butter. We also got prezel crusted onion rings that came with 3 dips that were really good! BEST STEAKS EVER!!! We both got sirloins and cooked at medium to perfection and had amazing flavor. They seasoned it so well! Mashed potatoes were really good as well and I had asparagus. My husband loved the mashed potatoes too and the brocolini. We split a salad too before the entrees and that was perfect. The onion rings made us little full so good thing I didn't have a salad to myself. We were so full when she offered us a free dessert for our Anniversary. We were able to get it to go. A chocolate velvet cake with raspberry ice cream! Yummy! I ate it later. Another of my brother's birthday dinner at J Gilbert's. My watermelon margarita was delicious and refreshing! We got calamari for an appetizer and it was also very good. I got the pri fixe menu with a salad, 4 oz filet and crab cake, and coconut cake. We asked our server which side was her favorite, and she recommended the au gratin potatoes, but they were my least favorite of the sides we got.
