I've heard many things about J.P. Licks, and I finally decided to give it a try before leaving Boston. I went in right before closing time and ordered a small pistachio ice cream. It was yummy, but not mind blowing. I don't have really much else commentary except for the fact that yes, I can taste that only good ingredients went into the making of this ice cream. No artificial green color. Just whole pistachios and good quality ice cream. I did like that the stuff lets you sample flavors before ordering, which is what plenty of ice cream shops do, but they also won't hesitate to give you any recommendations if it's your first time. read more

Best all-around ice cream joint in Boston (and tied with my other all-time favorite: The Hub in Tucson). I'm a genuine ice cream afficianado. I am also fit/health-conscious, so a single scoop is maybe a once/week treat for me. Consequently, I never buy from a grocery store, no matter my craving or the brand. It has to be from a parlour that churns their own custom concoctions using fresh, natural ingredients. Fortunately (unlike even just 10 years ago) nearly every city can boast such establishments and central Boston/Cambridge has two outstanding ones: Toscanini's and JP Licks. Between the two, JP's gets the photo-finish for a couple of small reasons. Raves: JPs has both a rotating, flavors-of-the-month menu and a staples menu, altogether they provide a good two flavors to select from. We sampled 4-5 and opted for a large (triple-scoop) of coconut-almond chip, coffee and cookies, and salted caramel. We loved that JPs offers 1, 2 and even 3 scoop sizes, because (a) the large is always the most economical and (b) when we travel, we almost always spring for the 3-scoop and get 3 different flavors to share. At $5.70 for the triple it was only a few cents more than the 2-flavored double at Toscanini's (which, surprisingly, is the largest size you can get there... and they won't allow you to split that amongst 3 choices). Flavors and texture were outstanding. The ice cream was just the right consistency (not hard, but not melted either) and easily eaten with the plastic spoons provided. Undoutbedly a 30+ percent fat content (but that's why it's a treat!). We wished we could have squeezed in one more visit to eat a few of the custom flavors too. We went on a Thursday afternoon, and despite Boylston and Newbury being busy with summertime shoppers and visitors, there were only a handful of folks in front of us. The establishment is kinda bohemian chic with a loft-like feel. There is free water easily accessible (a must to chase down all that ice cream). And, despite scaffolding and construction above/around this venue, its location was condusive to either sitting or strolling the many shops while nibbling. read more

J.P. Licks was the first place I went to as soon as I arrived in Boston. I had some serious ice cream cravings and I could tell this place would be good as soon as I saw the super long line at 11pm. I got the strawberry ice cream and the cookies and cream ice cream in a medium cup with mangos and gummy bears. The ice cream didn't blow me away but it was definitely creamy and delicious. We paid around 7.50 for our ice cream with two toppings and I personally thought it was a bit overpriced for the amount of ice cream we got. If you plan on coming to J.P. Licks, I would definitely try the cookies and cream because the flavor is spot on. It may look like chocolate but it tastes just like oreo at first bite. We got a lot of gummy bears and mango chunks on our ice cream. Maybe it was because we arrived closer to closing but the gummy bears were stale and hard and the mango didn't taste super fresh. J.P. licks has become my favorite ice cream place in Boston. It offers a wide variety of unique flavors, as well as coffee, pastries and tea. My personal favorites are the cappuccino crunch and the cookie dough. During my last visit I noticed that they added more flavors... what it's a plus for those whom like to try new ones each time they visit. I was not impressed by the coffee... in fact I was rather disappointed. I tried a small Cappuccino that definitely didn't feel as if it had espresso in it. ... plus it had too much (not steamed) milk. Anyway, as an ice cream place I fully recommend it. In terms of space, you can seat indoor or outdoor. The space inside is quite small though, so it's not very comfortable for groups. My dessert of choice is ice cream and I love checking out local ice cream spots when I'm traveling. J.P Licks is a popular ice cream chain in Massachusetts and I could see why after having sampled their goodies. They have a pretty big menu that serves up not only ice cream but baked goods (cookies, cakes, pies etc) as well as frozen yogurt. We were too full from dinner to try some of their sundaes and such so we settled on a medium (2 scoops) serving of their ice cream. Their scoops are HUGE by the way so I would actually recommend getting a small even if you are going to share between two people. We couldn't finish our serving of ice cream. Feel free to sample as much as you want! The employees are all really friendly and eager to give you a taste. We tried the Coffee Cookies n Cream which was delicious! I've never tried this flavor before and it was fantastic. We also tried the Coconut Almond Chip. This was pretty tasty but I thought the texture was a little off. I liked it but couldn't imagine eating an entire scoop of it. For our last flavor we tried the Maple Walnut Butter. This was our favorite flavor out of the three! Creamy and tasted just like a maple walnut cookie. Delicious. It is on the expensive side but I think it's worth the price since the scoops are so large.
