Anyone who knows me knows that I love sushi. This is why Jaku sushi has become my favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. My favorite things to eat at Jaku are the ginger salad (the best ginger dressing I've ever had), sushi burritos, chicken or shrimp fried rice, edamame and more sushi. Now you maybe thinking... SUSHI BURRITO?! Yes. And if you love sushi like me it's life changing. My go to order every single time is the crunch munch sushi burrito with eel sauce. Now all of the burritos will come on a seaweed wrap and that's how I get them. My friend likes to switch it up and get the sesame one. You cannot go wrong with choosing a burrito. If you like spicier I recommend the fire crunch. It's basically crunch munch but with some flare. Moral of the story, all of the food here is amazing and if I could eat here every day I would. Try it out and you won't be disappointed! OH & both Jaku locations are amazing! read more

I often come to jaku specifically for the sushi burritos, but I figured I would branch out and try something new. I got the sushi bento box, which also came with a salad. The salad dressing was a bit tart, but the ginger flavor was nice and the salad was overall very refreshing. I enjoyed it. The bento box had a good variety, but not the best quality of foods in my opinion. The dumplings weren't very flavorful. The California rolls were pretty standard, and had some nice creaminess to them. The salmon and tuna nigiri were probably my favorite parts. Very fatty flavor to them both and they tasted fresh. The edamame had really nice freshness to them as well, and I enjoyed the bite size aspect of them. The tempura vegetables were good but again pretty standard. Overall, I would highly recommend to stick with the sushi burritos here, as those are really the trademark of this restaurant. Glad I tried something new, but I think I'll be getting sushi burritos for future visits. P.S. I would give the bento box 3/5 stars, but kept it as 4/5 stars due to the sushi burritos read more

I am periodically reminded that Grand Rapids patrons often don't have the experience of frequenting truly exceptional major city ethnic restaurants. Such is the case with Jaku which was average at best. The seaweed salad was ordinary as were the specialty rolls. The tropical burrito was simply disgusting; a mongo roll packed with rice, mango, bacon, and a smidgen of fish wrapped in not-so-fresh seaweed. Whoever came up with this concept is imaginative, but these are the Arnold Schwarzeneggers of sushi rolls; big, bulky, and producing an illegitimate combination that will make you wonder WTF is this man, the owner, thinking. read more

We came later on a Thursday. Luckily got a table for four. The menu is huge and I wanted everything on it. We ordered sea weed salads, and plenty of sushi. The presentation is spectacular. You feel like you are in a sushi place in one of the big cities. All of the sushi tastes fresh and was very well prepared. We had to get the fun little Korean Pot cheesecake - too cute. A tiny, hole in the wall place that you would easily miss if you didn't know it was there. It's an incredible find when you do, however. Service is friendly, and although the place is tiny seating-wise, it's usually not too much of a wait. Once your wait is over though, food comes out with a quickness and it is amazing food. Now - a caveat here - I'm not a sushi fanatic, so my reviews of the food cover the rest of the menu, but the rest of the menu is amazing. This place checks all the boxes: service, menu, and execution. I go here regularly. Always top notch service and good servers who are always attentive and friendly. They are good with kids and even have chopstick helper tools for the little ones. The fish is very fresh - the most important marker of a quality sushi restaurant. The maki rolls are well executed. The sushi burrito is the star for me: quality execution with variety for less than $15. Unbelievable value. As an added bonus, the decor and artwork are beautiful and forward-thinking. For my money, this is one of the best sushi places in town along with Simple Fish, Sushi Kuni and Ju. For conscience and value, I end up here more than anywhere else. read more

Second time being back here. Ordered two unagi (eel) nirigi, 3 piece tuna special, and the umi sushi burrito. Everything was fresh and delicious. However, the sushi burrito was not wrap very tight, so towards the end it would just be a mess to eat. I also ordered the Korean Iced Coffee and it was not very flavorful. I need to write another review, because I love Haru so much. I went in last week for lunch and ordered the Crunch Munch roll (which has been a favorite of mine since college, and I haven't found it anywhere else), a spicy scallop roll, a spicy salmon roll and some white tuna & salmon sashimi. The quality of the fish is just outstanding. It is by FAR the best I have found at any sushi place in the greater GR area. (and I have been to many!) I was super impressed with the spicy scallop roll in particular on this visit. The roll had huge chunks of scallop, I think I actually had an entire scallop in one piece. I have been consistently blown away every single time I've been to Haru. The service is always polite, friendly and prompt. I love the atmosphere and the ever-changing artwork. read more

Unlike other sushi restaurant, Haru looks like a cafe or a trendy restaurant in a big city. I love owner's taste of dishes and decoration. Not only their looks but also their dishes are extraordinary. Shish is always fresh and rice is also well cooked. I could recognize they use good quality of rice. If you aren't a big fan of sushi, you must try roll with tempura and rice paper, udon (Japanese noodles soup) or mixed rice. They also show us a certain level of quality which I hardly can find in a city of midwest. So I regularly visit Haru to enjoy high quality food even crossing the city from kalamazoo to grand rapid. I really loved this place but this past visit I was disappointed by the waitstaff, she seemed to busy and pushy and didn't care to hear anything I asked for and when my sushi burrito came out it was just tossed onto a tray without any sanitary paper that usually covers the tray. It is a rare but magical occasion when after dining on mouth wateringly flavorful food you still feel good and not lethargic and sleepy. Such is the reason that this lovely sushi bar gets a 5 star review. The creativity and overall plating of all dishes here is absolutely fantastic. We started with the edamame which was nicely portioned and not overly salted like many restaurants in town do. We then moved on to tea, my wife and I both had the Korean citron tea which was basically hot water poured over lemon peel and honey. The flavor was fantastic and felt like you were drinking a warm glass of summer. The perfect drink on a cold night. You just couldn't stop smiling while drinking it. I then had the tuna roses which were thin but long pieces of tuna perfectly cut and wrapped with fruit into the shape of a rose. Seriously amazing Plating. The rose was flanked by tasty dipping sauces. For our mains we both had burritos, the house specialities. I had the angry unagi which was spicy tuna based with a sea weed wrap, the flavor seriously knocked my socks off. The rice was perfectly sticky and tasty and the burrito had just enough crunch to balance the fish and light wrap of the sea weed. My wife a non fish eater had the bulgogi (Korean Style beef) burrito wrapped with a sesame soy wrap. She loved it and ate every last bite. We also had the vegetable fried rice which was tasty and better than most other fried rice dishes that I have had in the past. The service was fantastic despite how busy it was.
