I'm really ambivalent about this place: I come here quite frequently because I love their cardamom lattice buns and their European style rye bread. (I love even more that they offer to slice the bread.) On the other hand, I find their staff a little...how should I say...not-customer-oriented? Love coming to this bakery! Cappuccino accompanied by a pastry is my weakness and I am always excited to look at the beautiful display of pastries at Jane. Be prepared for a line if you are visiting on a weekend. So happy Jane sells half loaves of bread! My absolute favorite is the olive polenta. The fig walnut is also a popular option and has that perfect fruit and nut pairing and they sell out of it quite early in the day. Recommend their olive pistachio twist and orange coffee cake. Their kouign amann is pretty good and very buttery but b patisserie's is still the best in the city in my opinion. Cappuccino is strong with that nice silky finish. Now I understand the French movie The Baker Wife where the village tried to restore the baker's marriage so he will continue to bake bread for the town. PASTRIES: Cardamom Lattice Bun - like a creampuff but to the next level, pudding inside a croissant ball. $5 Croissant - buttery and flaky, so good $4Almond Cake - perfect texture and flavor $5 Ginger Cookie - lots of candied gingers and strong spiced ginger aftertaste, thick and chewy; $3 so worth it; glad I bought 2. BREAD: they will cut half to sell (only place I know that offers this option) Walnut Fig - Earthy aroma, walnut and fig is a wonderful combination, ate with simple butter.  Must buy entire loaf next time. We love Jane the Bakery! When we head out for hikes outside of the city we like to grab breakfast here since they open early (7am!!). Everything there looks DELICIOUS and the whole bakery smells like heaven! Their croissants are incredibly flakey and everything we've tried here is on par with all the other top bakeries in the city. The banana chocolate almond croissant is SO decadent....it's super good but maybe more like a dessert. I also tried their spicy sausage provolone croissant and that's a unique pastry and quite good. The loaf of bread (ancient grain) is substantial and make for awesome sandwiches and toasts. read more

You can't go wrong with whatever you order and the staff is usually friendly and very helpful. My only problem is that I've become a night owl since I retired so I miss most of my favorites by the time I walk over there. I love the spicy sausage croissants, the morning bun, ginger cookie. Okay, ALL the cookies. I love their breads but unfortunately, can't remember their names. The rosemary/cheese one is so good that I could inhale the whole loaf. So good with olive oil & balsamic dip! You can't sit inside but they have a nice little parklet outside. Just remember, weekend mornings are crazy busy but everyone waiting is pretty mellow. read more

I had the vegan gluten free fruit muffin from Jane the Bakery. The way I'd describe the taste is primarily banana bread with bursts of blueberries in them and the top also have sugar. Sprouts also has a very similar vegan fruit muffin. Overall, this was a decent option. I wasn't obsessed or in love with it but it wasn't bad. If it was the only option around, I would eat it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out given other vegan options exist elsewhere. Ultimately super happy to see that they have a few vegan offerings though. I hope to see more vegan options soon! read more

I can't say much besides just go here. I mean if you are a monster who doesn't like carbs and bread and coffee and tea then I guess don't. They have GF offerings too. There is very little parking, but you're in SF so of course. Street parking on Geary was no problem. There isn't seating really, who cares sit at the park next door. The butter and jelly biscuit is only on Sundays I'm told. Many items come and go. A scone is shareable. The cookies are not a joke, take them seriously. They are amazing. A slice of quiche is worth it for the crust alone. The employees are patient and they need to be because it's a lot to see and smell. It's a bakery, I heard a lot of grumbling that it's warm inside. OK, sure but get your muffin and go. Just go to this place. You cannot regret it unless you have some serious issues to deal with. read more

Great selection of pastries as well as breads. Service is fast and friendly, being forgiving when the line is long. Will admit their wheat sandwich bread is our favorite here in Richmond. Pastries are solid - as pricey as anywhere else - but they do have some unique offerings such as pea and mint pastry. Found the Roast beef sandwich to be underwhelming. But that chocolate, hazelnut and cherry sourdough - or the fig and walnut - shoot, I'd start a fight for those two! Coffee is a solid middle of the road. Came by on New Year's around 3:40pm. There were a few people in line, and a few kinds of pastries left in the cases. I ended up getting a slice of banana bread, a chocolate chip toffee cookie, and a vegan gluten-free snickerdoodle cookie. My favorite was the banana bread. It was moist and thick. There was a strong banana flavor and a good amount of sweetness. The slice was pretty big as well. The chocolate chip toffee cookie was a thin cookie. It had a crisp exterior but was chewy. It was a bit too sweet for me. The snickerdoodle was my first vegan gluten-free cookie. The cookie was thick but didn't have the softness and chew of a normal cookie. It had a strong cinnamon flavor. It wasn't a bad cookie, but I definitely don't think I can go gluten-free anytime soon. There's parking in the lot in front, but I assume it gets packed during busy hours. Just visited for the first time over the weekend and it was so good! A friend and I even decided to do a taste test with Tartine Manufactory and this Jane's was SO much better! I had a ham and cheese croissant and an almond croissant. Both were great. Highly recommend. The latte was excellent. Hot tip: there is a small parking lot! This place leaves something to be desired from the front but the inside is nice and staff was friendly. There was no inside seating so either take it to go or be prepared to stand at the little bar counter to eat. read more

Pretty solid bakery near Japantown but make sure you get here early! We decided to give it a shot one day but got there in the late morning and by then the stuff we wanted to try was sold out. It's takeout only and the store itself is fairly small inside, but there's a huge variety of baked goods. There's some parking nearby but it's a bit limited. Been eating way more carbs now than ever and Jane is now my go to bakery. I love their bread loaf. I love their cookies, cinnamon bun and banana bread. Only this location has MONKEY bread too and its so tasty. Since COVID, I walk everywhere and its about 1.8 miles to the bakery each way but totally worth it. I love the bakery more than the restaurants because they have everything. Weekends will have lines even when yo go early. A lot of the popular items will sell out before noon even during the week. While the reports from my friends were glowing about the baguettes, when I finally got to Jane The Bakery what I was hoping for was something richly cinnamon-y --- but I didn't see anything like that. So, I opted for a piece of banana bread. I treated myself to bites in the car as I drove home and was disappointed. The smallish slice was somewhat dry and not banana-y at all. The bakery is a large place with counter in the front, tons of baked goods in the middle, and lots of bakers making bread and pastries in the back. It's an exciting place to watch. The chocolate coffee cake was flavorful but a little dense. Unfortunately we were disappointed in the chocolate croissant which was very dry and also in the Nutella brioche which was too bready, dry and lacked any sufficient Nutella. Sweet location. Clean, lots of natural light. Quaint but still enough room to feel like you're not on top of the person sitting next to you. Staff was very kind, warm. Great place to grab a tea or a pastry before hanging out in the park. There's a great fresh bread selection but the quality is hit or miss - I've cut into more than one raw rye. The coffee is abysmal - decent shots, but no one there has any idea how to prepare a drink with milk. Do not expect friendly service or knowledgeable counter staff, but the line moves quickly and there are occasionally some half-decent sweet pastries available. If you're looking for a decent flan, La Marais on Sutter has an extremely good one compared to what they serve at Jane. Juniper on Polk has a 'croissant loaf' that is way, way better than the crunchy-outside-raw-inside mass they have at Jane. Even Andersen bakery in the J-Town mall is better than this place. Oh, another fun fact about this place, it has the prices of an amazing bakery but the quality is no where close to what you are paying for. They have different stuff during the week opposed to Friday to Sunday. I like coming on the weekends for the expanded menu items. 5 stars for the quality and variety of baked goods, 1 star for naming. The cinnamon "rolls" have hardly any cinnamon and are not rolls, and I would prefer confectioner's icing to cream cheese frosting, which I think is waaaaay overdone, but it is easier to scrape off before repurposing the marbled bun for French toast. Speaking of French, the sesame "demi baguette" is a loaf, not a stick, which is what "baguette" means in French. I had an argument with a baker over this naming issue, and was so embarrassed at my own behavior that I banned myself from the bakery for a year. But eventually, I had to let myself out of time out and go back to Jane, because the actual baguettes are the best and most like real French baguettes of any in the city. Anyway, the sesame loaf makes great toast and sandwiches and is great with just butter too. The lemon bread is more like a pound cake, the flatbread is pizza. Both are delicious. See also everything else. I just bought a bag of granola, and the nutrition information is given in ounces--who has a kitchen scale, and who uses it to measure their granola?! This place is AWESOME. It was like walking into pastry heaven. We tried a lavender lemon scone and butter croissant. The scone was perfectly tart and sweet, and the butter croissant was the best I've had in the city yet. Super flaky on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. Jane the Bakery makes great pastries and breads. I like the creative flavors and fillings they use with their viennoiserie. I judge SF bakeries based on their croissant, chocolate croissant, kougin amann, baguette, and bread loaves mainly. They make my 3rd or 2nd favorite kougin amann. I bought two different bread half loaves a while back. I ate a few slices, then froze them. I recently defrosted them and sliced it all up. There was small grey plastic piece of plastic that was baked into the bread loaf, so beware! Maybe it's a piece off one of their plastic cutting boards? The employees are mostly nice and aren't stingy with providing a paper bag if I order a bunch of stuff and need one which I appreciate. They have a couple parking spots but they are often taken the times of day I go there. There is metered parking on the surrounding streets. I can't remember if there is any seating. After a long morning, I was making my way over to my usual bakery but realized it was closed! Did a quick search on Yelp, found Jane the Bakery, and headed straight there. The venue is tucked away, rather unassuming. Upon closer inspection, you'll find lines out the door and a spacious interior with large cases full of treats! Staff were all super sweet and quick to help! The line gave me enough time to scan the cases at a distance. I decided to order the following: Iced Coffee - regular, shmegular, degular, nothing special. Seasonal Kouign Amann - The flavor I got at the time was Walnut Poppy(?). The pastry itself was buttery, flaky, and had a perfect caramelization. The filling was not too sweet, fairly pleasant. The toffee piece right above was rather difficult to eat for being too tough. Double Chocolate Oreo Cookie - I've never seen a sexier, dark chocolate cookie. Unfortunately, she's more looks than anything. I expected a chewy Cookie but got a cookie that was very crisp. Enjoyed the flavor, regardless. Kabocha Squash Flan - Another seasonal item! The taste and texture is akin to a pumpkin cheesecake, just less of a tang from cream cheese. Perfect for fall!
