Trying to keep my café routines flexible and not resigned to going to the same places all the time, I took on Cassie J's advice and spent the day at this cute little java by the zoo. In addition to having the beach nearby, this cafe is conveniently located to attract more little kids to visit than anyone will ever know. The sunny disposition is shaped by a cast of young, energetic staff, young families that hang out before or after their outdoor fun; and graduate students who tend to stick around longer than usual with their laptops. Wink wink! Initially I was a little apprehensive about the prospects of the weather in the area, but it turned out nice and warm. Temperature inside was definitely comfy, and the sidewalk seating were filled with people basking in the sun with their pets. At the server's recommendation, my order of Kelly's Cove sandwich ($7.75) arrived warmed by request, and it had a thick layer of pesto and melted Swiss on top of layers of fresh greens and wholesome delicious turkey. The bread was toasted to perfection and although the pesto was a bit too oily, the sandwich was a hearty reminder of Darwin's Ltd. Gosh I miss that place! During my hours of work I also tried their refreshing iced tea ($3), dark house drip ($1.95), and a cup of vanilla and chocolate soft serve ($5+) to continue my celebration of the National Ice Cream Month. The ice cream was like the ones at Foster's Freeze, not too sweet but dense and creamy. It was the perfect motivation to get some work done. Although the seating area was smaller than desired, I really enjoyed having free wifi and the youthful but laid back atmosphere. A few limitations observed: 1.) It was a warm day so I hope they had kept their soymilk in an ice container to keep fresh, 2.) Even though the server had tried to sweep the floor several times, the nature of having so many little kids around requires more vigilance to keep the place clean. The service is friendly and the ambiance is just simply cozy. Warm wood panels surround the interior making it a prime spot to surf the extra fast internet and work while the sounds of ocean waves are just a few blocks away. If you're going to Java Beach at the Zoo to do some work, avoid the lunch and dinner crowds. With just about eight tables, it can get crowded. For this one little aspect, this place for me deserves 5 Stars, up one from the previous 4: The gals working there yesterday night were extremely friendly, and attentive, despite just being a little cafe at the beach. Once arriving, the gal at the cashier was friendly and patient as I decided on what to order. I was contemplating on whether or not to try something new, or stick with the BBQ Chicken Sandwich that I love there. I finally decided on the known, along with a Green Tea. For customers eating there, they have cute little personalized "Java Beach" mugs, that are also available for purchase. I noticed the gal making my sandwich wearing gloves which I really appreciated despite her not handling any cash. After a few disturbing experience at other places, seeing gals switching off from handling cash to making food, I've always been bothered by this little aspect. But it was great seeing this gal wearing gloves and cleaning her counter after each order. My sandwich arrived, and it was consistent and satisfying. After my sandwich, being the way that I am, I had to buy a cookie. The Vegan Banana Chocolate Walnut Cookie made by "Zoe's Cookies" quickly caught my eye--perfect, chewy, soft, and actually tasted really good, despite my preconceived ideas about Vegan food being bland and boring. They also sell soft serve ice cream, available in Vanilla, Chocolate or Swirl. Furthermore, they have a little bar area for Draft Beer and Wine. Such a cool little aspect for a cafe. Java Beach is a neighborhood gem and because of its prime location, is also popular for tourists or anyone visiting Ocean Beach or the SF Zoo. We are lucky enough to live just a few blocks away, so Java Beach is a great place for us to walk to for breakfast, lunch or coffee. Stopped by this morning for brunch. There was constantly a line out the door, but we still found that seating was available inside and outside. Since it was a beautiful day (without fog), we nabbed a table outside. It's a casual spot where you help yourself to the utensils and waters. The line moved quickly at the ordering counter. Cashier was super duper friendly. Food was also ready in a matter of minutes. You pick up the plates yourself and dropped them off when you're finished. Enjoyed our meal without any fuss. Food is simple and satisfying. -Smoked Salmon Bagel ($7.50): Served with your choice of bagel. I chose poppy seed today. Could have been better if more lox was packed in there but god enough for me. -San Patricio ($10): Huge sando filled with chunks of chicken breast, avo, lettuce, jack cheese and onions on cibatta roll. Served with your choice of kettle chips or cole slaw. The sando was a huge portion packed with incredibly fresh ingredients. Overall, highly recommend this local spot. What a nice place to grab an excellent sandwich made to order. Sandwiches come in three available sizes, small, medium, and large. As my friend and I both wanted the same sandwich, it was suggested we order the large size and just split it. We ordered at the counter, gave our name, and grabbed a table. I Love Java Beach! I go to this location more often because it is a little closer to where I live than the one on La Playa/Judah. I've tried the Tsunami, Bonfire Delight, Granola Bowl, Caramel Latte, and the Mocha. My faves are the Tsunami Sandwich and the Caramel Latte. There is something about the sandwich that keeps me coming back to it, maybe its the crunchiness of the dutch crunch or the savory blend of ham/mortadella/salami, I don't know what it is but it works every time. And as for the latte, I'm not a huge coffee connoisseur but I think the coffee here is very addicting... I just back from school for summer vacation a week ago and I've been to Java Beach for their coffee 4 times already! I love that the cafe is so close to the beach (The one on La Playa/Judah is even closer!) First time here today, and wow, I can't believe I've never stopped by before! Located right in front of the zoo, Java Beach Cafe had me at the first bite. But even before I ordered my drink, a pigeon walked in through the front door and flew around the kitchen annoyingly while the workers tried their best to shoo it out. That sure increased my appetite. The Peppermint Mocha was not worth the $4 I paid for the smallest size. It barely tasted like peppermint. To top that off, about 6 pigeons walked in while I was trying to study for less than 2hrs, making me pretty uncomfortable with them walking around and having workers and customers try to shoo them out. It wouldn't have happened if the workers just closed the front door but maybe it's normal to keep the door open (who am I to know, this was my first time here). Wi-fi is fast and service is friendly, but who knows if I'll ever give this place a chance for their sandwiches. You def lost me as a drink place and study spot. Lose the pigeons and I'd try the sandwiches there. A great place to grab delicious subs on the way to the zoo! They have all kinds of different bread choices which is always great and they make a pretty mean sandwich that fills you up for the rest of the day. Grab a sandwich to go and take it down to the beach and enjoy a mini picnic before heading to the zoo or wherever your San Fran adventure takes you! They always have at LEAST four big towers of different coffees, and no matter what your way of preparing your coffee they'll have the condiment of your choice for FREE. None of this "extra 50 cents for soymilk." Nope. They've got stevia, splenda, the blue, the pink, the white, the brown sugar, the agave nectar. Skim, 2%, whole, cream, soy, almond, you name it. Pour it on in. * Outdoor seating. On a beautiful day it's so splendid to look down the street and see the ocean and soak in the warm sun. Sure, during peak times you might get stuck with a table around the corner in the shade, but it's still nice. *Location location! Within walking distance to the zoo and right down from the beach. Kids love this place and people love to bring them since it's right next to the zoo. They have wi-fi and it's cozy inside, so bring a laptop and pull up a chair. * USUALLY great parking, for San Francisco. Unless there's some kind of event going on at the zoo, and then forget about it. * Dog friendly. Bring fido, because you can always eat outdoors with him/her. What's less than great, but hey: * Slow service. It just is. I've never NOT had to wait in line, and once out of five times there's no seat because it's packed. But all good things in life require a little patience, right? * Hella crowded at peak times. And people can get cranky about you coming in and out of the door to get more water or bus your table. Probably because they've been waiting in line for ten minutes and they keep getting bumped. Crowded has always been a good sign to me, though, and something worth tolerating. * Outdoor seating. Yes, it's good on sunny days, but of course this is also right next to Daly City in That Part of San Francisco, so it's usually foggy. And that means it's cold. When the seating is all taken up inside you're forced to huddle and shiver at the outside tables in the grey, wet, pea-soup fog. * Kid friendly. So if you're out for a romantic date or trying to work on your laptop, expect the occasional scream or picky eater complaining loudly. But hey, they look cute so calm down. * Bus your own table. Yup, gotta clean up after yourself. Which means some people don't. So expect to occasionally have to bus your own AND somebody else's table if you want a seat. * Less than sanitary at times. A previous reviewer mentioned a lot of crap on the floors, and that is accurate. There are always all kinds of scraps of dirt or paper napkin or food all over the place. This may just be a symptom of people bussing their own table, towing dogs and kids, and running in and out for various reasons; but if you're a stickler for cleanliness, just don't look at the floor. So for me the good definitely outweighs the bad. The ambiance is warm and jovial and the decor is very beach-y. It's a relaxed place for families, bikers at the end or in the middle of their ride, developers/writers/university students, and even tourists. For those who were born and raised in San Francisco, there were times when we may have taken those random strolls along Sloat Blvd between 45th Ave and Great Highway remembering the Doggie Diner that used to be on Sloat and 46th Ave! The very last time I went to the Doggie Diner was sometime during the last half of 2004. Times progressed, we started seeing more changes and now all I see is the Doggie Diner head every time I pass by on the 18 or 23! I only ordered the croissant when I came in today, but I'll definitely order some other items when I come here next time for a sandwich and a cup of coffee! They have a variety of lattes, my personal fav is the vanilla almond milk latte (it's toooooo good). Their kale caesar salad is great too! What an awesome local gem. It's not snobby. It's exactly what it should be. Sure, if you come during peak hours on a sunny weekend, it may feel packed, crowded and not worth the wait. But as someone stopping in on a quiet weekday, it's simply perfect. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. The food is good. It's a cafe so it's not amazing but it's really good. The salad are have fresh cut romaine...none of this brown wilted stuff from a bag. It's a little pricey but the portions are HUGE. Big filling salads, big sandwiches, yummy breakfast options. Great coffee shop, with good hours of operation. The people are very nice, lots of outlets, and free wifi. I'm a big fan of Justin, always nice, and remembers your name. One complaint is that the tables and benches are sticky as a result of it being such a popular place for people to go to. The floors also have lots of crumbs. My boyfriend lives like three blocks away so we always find ourselves comin here for a quick bite. They have the same menu as their location on Judah, except here they have a soft serve machine!!! It was a nice little cafe that sold coffee, pastries, sandwiches, toast, ice cream, etc. I was actually just hiding out in the cafe because it was cold out and I was waiting for someone. I love for a good latte. During October and November, I have a lot of very early mornings I my job. I can't really stomach coffee first thing in the morning, but Ivan do a latte. I love latte's. Java Beach makes a fantastic latte. If you go to Starbucks and order a grande latte, put soy milk in it, and want an extra shot, and a flavored syrup it's going to cost you like $6.50. A large latte at Java Beach is 4.25. It doesn't cost you any extra to have up to four shots of espresso, and only .65 to use almond milk. They also had free hazelnut syrup on their counter. You can make your latte a hazelnut latte for no additional cost. They also had agave nectar, which most coffee shops do not have. Beyond the drink itself everything else in this place was also great. I love the look of the place. It's very spacious with lots of seating. The staff were very friendly, and seem like they really enjoy working there. They also have some good looking food.
