I have been hearing about Jawny's for a while and finally got the chance to try it since they opened their first brick and mortar right next to my barbershop. We ordered the LA Spicy Philly and it did not disappoint. Genuinely one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I've had, the flavor was phenomenal from start to finish. And the best part? I personally confirmed with the owners over the phone that their cheesesteak is halal, which means the whole family can enjoy it together. That's huge. Stopped by on opening day - to a mostly smooth brick and mortar operation kicking off. Went with the classic Philly, with the house made Wiz. I made it a combo and also ordered the hot lemon pepper wings. Wasn't mad about my food. It kept my tastebuds occupied for the England v France bronze game. The portions, for what I paid...I'll accept. The cheesesteak landscape in LA is still a small neighborhood. You got the mall chain, the imported-from-Philly chain (my fave), and the indie complex, where Jawny's and a handful of other developing entities reside. LA loves a good hot, chopped sandwich and businesses will continue to showcase their take on the east coast institution. Even fast service megas, like Jack in the Crack and Arby's, are making sure they can ride the cheesesteak wave. Did Jawny's keep up with my favorite? Not so much. Not with the classic. I'm not even sure what was so proprietary about the house made Wiz. And the overall value made the original steak feel like more of a hyped, boutique version of the cheesteak. It just wasn't substance-forward. But this restaurant will technically be more accessible than the carwash pop-up was, and that counts in my hemisphere. To be honest, I see myself ordering their wings more often, as a closer alternative to Wingstop. Ultimately, Jawny's is middle of the road for me. They took over the old Indian spot that was here for decades and the inside is pretty large and comfy compared to their old car wash parking lot. Lots of metal tables with padded chairs for dining in. There's cool cheese themed mural type artwork on the walls, cheesy whiz dripping down with the Philly skyline in the back and a nice juicy Phillysteak sitting on the Delaware River. Parking is cool, plenty of spaces inside the lot and you can park on Burbank Blvd. =========== THE (M)EATS =========== ~ LA PHILLY -- There spin on the Philadelphia native has mayonnaise, steak, mushrooms, onion, bell pepper and cheese. I got mine with their homemade Cheese Wiz. The bread is a lightly toasted roll that is slightly crunchy on the outside yet soft, chewy and pillowy on the inside. They stuff a good-size helping of steak inside and you can taste the freshness and quality of everything. It all came together great and I loved it was packed with steak. Extremely impressed with the staff! Super friendly, extremely kind and boy do they move quick. I stopped by to try them out today for the first time in my food was ready in no time. Not just that, but I was greeted at the minute I walked in. They totally make you feel welcomed. The dining area is completely spotless. Now for the food, I had the LA Philly meal which includes fries and a soda. It was so so good! Will definitely be going back! Tried Philly Boyz and overall it was a solid experience with a few standouts. The Chicken Cheesesteak was full, flavorful, and definitely satisfying, no skimping on portions. One sandwich was more than enough, and honestly, I'm glad we didn't order fries because we were already stuffed. The 215 Philly, however, was a bit underwhelming compared to the chicken. It wasn't bad, just didn't have the same punch or wow factor I was expecting. One small wish: I'd love the option to order half a sandwich, the portions are generous, which is great, but sometimes you want variety without committing to a full one, or you eat like I do and can't do a full sandwich justice. I was born and raised in Philly and this was definitely NOT A Philly JAWN !! It was seasoned very well but I was so disappointed... First for paying $21 per sandwich as the delivery fee was an additional $3 per sandwich ( instead of 1 fee for the entire order) Second for only getting a 1/4 of the meat typically found on Philly Cheesesteak this was outrageous!! There was mostly mushrooms opinions and cheese with very little steak... in fact on one 1/2 of the sandwich the meat didn't even cover the bread... see attached photo! The restaurant was clean, welcoming, and the service was fast and friendly. My son ordered the Chicken Philly Cheesesteak with the house sauce. It turned out to be a little spicy for him, so when I asked if they could make a change, the staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. They happily prepared a new cheesesteak without the house sauce and it was amazing. We really appreciated their excellent customer service and willingness to make sure we were happy. The food was delicious, the staff was wonderful, and the overall experience was excellent. Rich, fatty, salty, and very saucy this sub hits the spot as a late night meal. The sandwiches came out quickly. I love a good cheesesteak even going as far as going to Philly for one and Jawnys could definitely compete with sone of those east coast staples. I usually order them on Uber Eats but you can pick them up if you feel like. They don't have much of a seating area since it's in a parking lot but somehow folks make it work. If you don't order before hand you may have a small wait but it's cool because there's usually people around to converse with so it helps kill time. I've been hearing about Jawny's for a while, so I finally had a chance to try it yesterday with a friend. Overall, the food wasn't bad, but the biggest issue was how extremely salty everything was. I kept waking up throughout the night very thirsty, which has never happened to me before, and my friend experienced the same thing. They really need to cut back on the salt. I can only imagine how concerning this could be for someone who has high blood pressure or needs to watch their sodium intake. Especially driving all the way from LA to Sherman Oaks, I don't think it's worth the drive unless this improves. Also, the ranch was way too watery and wasn't very good. Finally stopped at Philly Boyz for a late night cheesesteak, and now I'm angry at myself for not stopping much, much sooner. The nicest guys on the planet cooking up excellent cheesesteaks to order on a well-seasoned grill that imbues the meat with just the right flavor and char. Fresh rolls flown in from Philly get lightly toasted and neatly cradle the very generous serving of meat, cheese and whatever fixings you decide to add. I had them chop in their hot peppers, and that gave the sandwich a serious pop of vinegar and heat. I came at a slow time, so my sandwich was made quickly, but now that I've had my first taste, I wouldn't mind a wait if that's what I encounter in the future. And as we know, this operation is a pop-up at the Fashion Square Car Wash in Sherman Oaks, so the ambience is nighttime parking lot chic. And that's perfectly fine for such a fine rendition of a meal that has always been a casual experience. The parking lot situation is still horrendous even on days that aren't busy. The opening at 630pm everyday is also a very interesting approach. The cheese steaks are good. The cooking crew works fairly quick. The portion is enough to get one person full. Parking is big so no need to worry about where to park. If you live in San Fernando this is the place to go but it is quite a way out for someone who lives in DTLA. Either way I'll make my way back in a few months. read more

And cheese (choose from 3 - provolone, white, American, or cheese whiz) because it's in the name. This is a great location in the parking lot with lots of open air and it's very popular as I can tell by how much business they do. The two guys work quickly, taking orders, grilling and serving them up. Service is friendly and food is good. You can go with the steak or chicken and add some fries if you're feeling it. I paid $30.48 for one Philly combo with fries and a drink, plus extra for additional cheese because the sandwiches looked dry in the photos I'd seen online. Even with the extra cheese, it was still dry. The chicken wings were actually really good, but in total I spent $48 for one sub combo and 10 wings. At that price, I expect the food to be amazing. Personally, I enjoy Charleys Cheesesteaks more, and it's much more affordable. I'm glad I gave this place a try, but after all the hype I saw online, I left disappointed. Given that this place is walking distance to my house, and given that I do like a good steak sandwich, I really wanted to like this place. I'm afraid "okay" is the best I can do. I tried the LA Philly, Spicy version, no mayo. It was decent, mildly spiced, and honestly it tasted like it was made in a car wash parking lot (which it was) - not bad but not much depth of flavor. I chose provolone, which worked okay but ultimately was no better than a Jersey Mike's Philly sub (if that). It was big and filling, which it better be for $19. The cheese fries were good - very light and crispy and tender inside, and the house cheese wiz is actually pretty good. I fact, I think wiz would be a good choice for their sandwich.
