I had heard of this place because my friends had brought the seaweed flavored fish to a get together. It was so good so I wanted to get it again and also try a few other things. We ordered an order for take out and I placed a phone order and then went to pick it up. Unfortunately when we got home, we got an order of rice instead of the Shanghai baby ribs. So when we called to notify them about this error. They said that they could credit us the next time, we came in. But we didn't like this offer since we weren't sure when is the next we would go here. So instead, we just had them make the order and we went back to pick it up. It was a little disappointing to have this error. And when we got there to pick up our order of Shanghai baby ribs, they just handed us the container. And it wasn't even in the same type of container that the rice was in. Nor did they even offer a small free item for the inconvenience of this error. It just would be a nice gesture since they made this error. We ordered the Shanghai baby ribs, green beans with ground pork, seaweed flavored fish and the three ingredient crispy noodles. The seaweed flavored fish was probably best thing we had. The green beans were ok, kind of bland. The Shanghai baby ribs tasted like Peking pork chops but less flavorful. The noodles were also ok. The gravy was good but the noodles were a little hard to break apart and this could be since it sit a little bit since we had to go back. This place was featured as a Michelin "inspector discovery" in 2020 and given a Bib Gourmand in 2021. ... The Michelin Guide doesn't always get it right, I suppose. ... Either that, or the restaurant has drastically changed since 2020/2021. We ordered the sautéed eggplant and were taken aback by how cloyingly sweet the dish was. Seriously, it tasted like we were eating candied eggplant in a savory sauce! No amount of extra rice could've masked the amount of sweetness in this dish. We then tried the "lion's head" pork meatball in brown sauce, which is a family favorite. This one is a bit unique in that it is actually one giant meatball with a cooked egg in the middle, sort of like a Scotch egg. We're accustomed to this dish being in a simmered pot, almost like a stew, but I guess this one was more "dry style" with some sauce and bok choy. Unfortunately, the sauce was, again, way too sweet, especially for an Asian palette. I don't know how they managed to make a pork meatball taste like dessert, but here we are. Do their customers actually like their food this sweet? If so, they should perhaps let you choose a sweetness level like boba shops do. We also ordered the soup dumplings, which were completely dissatisfactory. The skin was thick, not delicate like XLB skin should be. Worse, some came with broken wrappers and the soup already leaking out, which, you know, defeats the purpose of enjoying XLB in the first place! The other thing I noticed was the unusually long pauses between each dish. Sometimes, we'd be waiting maybe upwards of ten minutes from one course to the next. In Chinese cuisine, the goal is to have a little bit of everything all at once. Eating cold scallion pancakes with your warm dumplings is not an optimal dining experience. All in all, I was massively disappointed by the food here. Perhaps my expectations were set too high, given how much they flaunt the Michelin mentions in the front window? Still, I think it's safe to guess why this place hasn't received further recognition in the years between now and then. read more

What do you order at this family style restaurant? Well, try the dong po pork, the eggplant, and the seaweed fried fish. These are savory, savory, and savory, and by that, I mean they are just loaded with flavor that'll keep you wanting more. The dong po pork was hearty and juicy and cooked just right, the eggplant... well I love eggplant so no explanation needed, and the fried fish was crunchy but fresh. The xiao long bao and mapo tofu were good/safe options but I definitely feel like we could have been a bit more adventurous in our last 2 dishes but sometimes simple is better. So there you go, it's no bistro na's but jiang nan spring still has lots of heart and flavor so you can't go wrong eating here either! read more

I've always heard people talking about how great Jian Nan Spring was and was even more curious when I learned that they were on the Michelin Guide. This review is for my dining experience in September 2022. They have an extensive menu, which can be good or bad depending how you look at it. It definitely took me a while to review and pick which dishes I wanted and hope that it's one of their signature dishes. Pricing was definitely a bit pricier than other surrounding Chinese restaurants in the area and we didn't even get to try all their signature dishes. Service was pretty quick, which is so rare to find in Chinese restaurants. || L O C A T I O N / P A R K I N G || -Located on the corner of E Main St and S Granada Ave. -Private parking lot attached to the restaurant. You'll park and walk towards the street as the entrance is facing the street -Came around 4 P.M. on a Saturday afternoon and parking was pretty easy. || F O O D || #2 Beef & Maw Szechwan Special Sauce ($17.95) - hefty portion of beef and maw. Not as spicy as the ones I've had from other restaurants #47 Dong Po Pork ($26.95) - so tender and didn't taste super fattening. It did taste a little sweeter than what I'm used to having. #50 Pork Chop with Pepper Salt ($17.95) - classic dish that we always order from Chinese restaurants. Perfectly fried, didn't have that old oil taste. Everything we had was good! Preserved egg with avaocado, tofu, tomatoes - super refreshing! Eggplant - cooked nicely, not mushy and lots of flavor Ribs - tastes way better than it looks! Tastes sweet Steamed chicken - has bones so be careful when eating but is very light and great with the dipping sauce Service was really nice. One of waitstaff saw that we had a huge mess on our plates and brought us new ones. The dining room gets loud though when there are a lot of people. Awesome food. Authentic Chinese, fantastic flavors, deep, rich. Dongpo pork was as soft as butter, the meat just melted in your mouth and the fatty layer is so rich that it makes you full in just a few bites. Duck was crispy, bun just perfectly soft, couldn't ask for more. Same thing with the clams and the eggplant, we just enjoyed every single dish. Service is as you expect. Only what you need and nothing more, you won't see any super attentive hosts here. Booked for a party of 7 and preordered our dishes in advance We ordered the below dishes : 1. 砂鍋醃篤鮮 (5/5) not salty just the right amount. 2. 樟茶鴨 （半隻）(3/5) meat was dry and alot of bones 3. 清蒸鱸魚 (5/5) fish is very fresh and tasty 4. 鹹蛋黃苦瓜 (5/5) not bitter at all 5. 清炒大豆苗 (5/5) flavor was good. Not old and not salty 6. 蒼蠅頭 (5/5) tried this in Taiwan. The taste here is similar and the chives were very crispy and delicious, easy to pair with rice . Only thing it was a bit too spicy. 7. 上海白斬雞 （半隻）(3/5) mediocre. A lot of bones not a lot of meat (so so) 8. 上海炒年糕 (3.5/5) rice cakes were soggy 9. 核桃蝦仁 (5/5) shrimp was not caked inside a lot of flour. On point Gratuity was already calculated and added to our total bill ( maybe because it's Mother's Day?) but I did find it quite odd... but still paid. It was really busy and packed but servers were attentive and still came around to ask if everything was ok. Decent service and good food. We sat at the corner near the back of the restaurant. It offered a bit more privacy and was not that loud. They do offer in room privacy tables but I think your party has to be big enough to fit two tables in order to reserve. I would come again. Our favorite was the sweet and sour ribs, not too sweet or sour or saucy, just right, super crispy and freshly fried. The lamb stir fried with onion also shined, without gamey flavor, sauce was super delicious mixed with rice! The steamed fish was sweet and fragrant, again dishes here are fresh fresh fresh! Crab with sticky rice cakes, with edamame and garlic shoots lending texture and flavor, also a hit. A more Shanghainese spin on the Cantonese dish of lobster noodle. And finally a classic Shanghainese dish, smoked fish, usually we expect it to be dark and sliced thin and a bit dry and tough but with ample braised flavor, but here it is made kind of like the northeastern candied yams 拔丝地瓜，it's fried fresh, then a thin layer of sugar glaze makes it so crispy on the outside. Sometimes this dish is served cold but this one stayed hot for a while due to the expert chef's frying skills. The place started getting full by 5:30pm on a Sunday, many families gathered there, proves how good and popular it is to locals and visitors alike. We came here on Lunar new year eve without any reservations. Since it's only 2 of us the wait is not too bad (about 30 mins). We ordered right away after got seated and the food came pretty quickly. We ordered seaweed fried fish, honey walnut shrimp, Dong po pork and Shanghai style stirred fried rice cake. All of them taste really good and authentic. I love the Shanghai style rice cake especially. The taste really reminds me of home. Both the owner and all the staff are super friendly. We came here for a family dinner. It's a very crowded but service is responsive. We ordered family style and one of their famous dishes, smoked duck. They ordered half a duck and they gave us a whole duck, then saying they will charge us the whole amount, despite their mistakes. We enjoyed the duck and had left over meat for a veggie the next day and the bones are used to make a very delicious soup. I came today with some coworkers and I honestly was disappointed in the food for a Michelin spot. Bistro na is definitely better for a Michelin star. I would've given this place a solid 3 stars but the service was good up until I went to pay for my separate to go order ($15 lunch special). I didn't have cash and I wanted to pay with Apple Pay. She kept saying that it has to be $25 or more for card. She went to converse with some other co workers and the coworkers even asked if I had Apple Pay. After some side conversations she finally told me that she'll do it for me this one time like she was doing the hugest favor..... and I just paid with Apple Pay. They probably just didn't want to pay the credit card fee....but it's just bad business in my opinion. There was no sign displayed anywhere where there needed to be a minimum. I also just went on their website and I could just pay using Apple Pay and order online! Other than that, the food was mediocre. We ordered the seaweed fried fish, brown tofu, honey walnut shrimp, Shanghai chow mein, and the salt and pepper pork. The best thing was probably the honey walnut shrimp as the breading was really light. I'm not sure if I would come back due to the lame service at the end of my meal. read more

For a Wednesday night, Jiang Nan Spring was quite busy. There were about 4-5 large tables occupied just in the primary main dining area with 2-3 booths also occupied. There was also a private party behind some wooden doors so staffs were quite busy and overworked. That also meant service was unfortunately incredibly slow. I came with a party of 9 and the food came out fairly slowly - one at a time. I felt that most of the dishes that we ordered had great depth of flavor like the spare ribs, the braised black cod, and sautéed green beans, and the twice cooked pork. Others were either slightly over-salted or lacked flavor. Aside from the slow service, we were missing a total of 3 dishes that just never came out. We were even giving the check before asking for it and also were charged for the dishes we still haven't received. Normally, you ask the customer if everything tasted great or if anything else was missing before handing out the bill....Nope, they just handed us the check without double checking which I personally think is a pretty bad mistake on their end. Not to mention that we noticed other customers received a complimentary dessert at the end but we were given nothing. Based on other reviews, it sounds like you need to pay with cash (which we did not) to be given a free dessert. I honestly think that's unfair - you either give complimentary dessert or you don't and not segregate customer's experience based on their form of payment. read more

Super modern and aesthetically pleasing Chinese restaurant that has authentic Shanghaiese dishes like the rice cakes. We just ordered two dishes, the green bean & eggplant stir fry along with the Shanghai rice cakes and they were both so good!! It was the bright red banner out front advertising the reception of two Michelin Bibe awards in 2020 and 2021, no small feat considering the state of the world. I was heading to what I hoped was a new destination sushi restaurant up the street but it turned out to be a Japanese market that sells sushi-grade fish and other things, so great discovery, now to double back and check out this multi-regional Chinese bistro. Parking is easy and there are three ways in or out. Once inside the modern austere decor was both appealing and subtle. By subtle I mean those leatherette seat pads rendered in a deep navy hue to match the contrast color on the was, with additional verve on account of the faux Ostrich texture, Tre Chic! The menu is remarkable for its plain appearance, a laminated double-sided affair, but how did they cram so many things on both sides without distracting attention? They have some new to me options, some classic Szchuan, Shanhaiese, Hunanese, and Cantonese items opened many possibilities and combinations. Do you want soup, seafood, spicy and noodles? That's definitely a possible outcome here. The food arrived quickly after friendly server took the order. First up was a delicious beef and egg soup. The nice man who delivered it also suggested the white pepper shaker he dropped off might be useful. It was, I easily dialed in the spice level and the pepper disappeared in the bowl. The Shanghai soup dumplings were very good, not as soupy as other places but a good value in both cost and quantity too. The eggplant dish was excellent. I'm still gradually liking eggplant but the gf absolutely loves the stuff and this dish really appealed. Throughout the meal we enjoyed expert friendly service from several employees, and I'm looking forward to trying lots of new things next time. I must have ordered the wrong things: Shanghai Rice Cake - Absolutely weird texture grainy in not the good way. The dough got stuck in the upper part of my mouth. I would not order this at all Xiao Long Bai - the dough was interesting. It was more of a thicker texture and no soup. I would not order this Filet Mignon: very disappointed. I had to spit it out because I don't like the taste of game so it means that the meat was not drained Things that were good: This cucumber dish The fish belly soup I thought I ordered the classic but I was really disappointed in the Rice Cake and XLB. We came on a rainy day and were seated promptly in a booth. This restaurant is weird as some tables have white cloth to hide makeshift furniture while others are formica ( plastic laminate) without cloth. The dumplings were ok but nothing to write a book about served with a small plate of soy based sauce. There was definitely not enough sauce to dip the dumplings in. The walnut shrimp was very bland so were the shanghai noodles. The only dish that stood out was the eggplant. The server was rude and when asked to change plates, she brought only one for the party of four and nearly threw it on the table. I didn't see this maneuver but sure heard the noise. When i asked one of my guests what had happened, he said that it was all ok. If he had confirmed what he told me later in the car, I would have left on the spot while paying my bill with ZERO tip. Forget this place: There are so many other better restaurants in Alhambra and the San Gabriel valley. PS:Definitely not Bib gourmand quality in my opinion. read more

What a satisfying meal on a chilly evening. We came here after seeing that the restaurant made the LA TIMES 101 best restaurants. We ordered the wine-infused shrimp, the Shanghai chow mein and the Bamboo shoot soup with pickled pork. The soup was by far the most memorable dish and one we would order again. I will say that the portion sizes were generous and a party of two like us ended up taking a full meal's worth home. For the most part, the prices were reasonable, i.e. under $20. The staff are friendly and professional, and attended to all our requests. I will say that for those who enjoy more spicy food, you will have to request some chili oil on the side. read more

A nice first visit to Jian Nan based mostly on Yelp reviews. We arrived early afternoon on a Saturday as the lunch crowd was dwindling so had no problems getting a table. The restaurant has a spacious feel, with tables not crammed together and a high ceiling. As advertised, the service was friendly (for a Chinese restaurant) and there was no problem conversing in English or Cantonese, even though the employees are Mandarin speakers. We primarly ordered based on dishes most commented by Yelpers. We tried the Dong Po pork, the seaweed fried fish and tea smoke duck. The only disappointment was the duck, which at ~$30, was very dried out. The pork was as advertised, very tender (and fatty of course). The fish was fried to perfection, tender and moist. The restaurant is rated a Michellin Bib Gourmand, which means it is recognized for good quality and good value. For the 4 of us, our tab was nearly $150 so the 'good value' is subject to debate. But overall it was a nice, enjoyable experience and there are lots more dishes I'd like to try. read more
