Mom and pop owned restaurant that my wife and I like going to. The service is good and the food is comforting. Doesn't have that strong flavor you get in typical Chinese restaurants that many Americans love. That's what I like about this place. We ordered the a few things to try. Here they are in our order of most flavorful: - pork and napa dumplings - filling is really popular everywhere and they did this well - beef and onion - technically executed fine; the onion left the interior more moist, so the "Q" or mouth feel was not what I prefer - shrimp stir fry noodle - hubby liked this - pork wonton soup - wontons were delicious (my second favorite filling after the napa) but broth was a bit bland Dumplings are made to order so you know it's fresh. The dumpling skins were the right texture, not too thin (e.g. store bought wrappers) and not too thick. They were fried with a nice finish on the bottom. Friendly and attentive service. The menu is condensed yet has a little of everything to appeal to your taste buds: appetizers, soups, wonton soups, pancakes, pan fried dumplings, stir fried noodles, fried rice, fish & seafood, beef, pork, chicken, & vegetarian dishes; the only thing they're lacking is dessert. Even though the restaurant was at capacity, service was superb! The servers were polite & friendly, letter us knowing when there's a delay & why; our water glasses were refilled in-between rounds (no need to flag anyone down because your glass was empty), dishes were served hot & timely, & infrequently checked if everything was ok. Price points are higher on some dishes & moderate on others, with some generous dishes (like the fish fillet, poached chicken, & pork belly) & some on the skimpier side (like the black pepper beef). Unlike some SGV Chinese restaurants where tea & rice are usually free of charge (but that's also changing nowadays) during dinner, you're charged $1.49/bowl here. 4.5 stars worthy & bumped to 5 for service excellence. First time trying this place. It is a fairly new restaurant, located in a small strip mall in the South Redondo Beach area. The dining area is fairly small, but we were able to find seating immediately. We had the Chicken Wonton Soup, Scallion pancake, Pork Napa dumpling, Northeastern Style Tangy Pork and rice. The wontons in the soup was full of flavor, the soup itself was a bit light on taste. The scallion pancakes was delicious and had the right amount of chew, but I wish there was a dipping sauce to go with it. The fried dumplings came with a soy dipping sauce and inside was juicy with soup somewhat similar to xiao long bao. The dumpling skin was soft and thick and fried just right. The Tangy Pork was also very good and flavorful. There are a variety of entrees on the menu including many vegetarian options and as well as different types of dumplings which I believe they are known for. Many of the main entrees were a bit on the pricey side at least $16-17 and up, however, I would like to come back to try some of the other dishes. For a dumpling house, I didn't really like their dumpling. That's the only reason why I shaved off 1 star. If you order other food from the menu, they taste great! Their portions are not that big either but it's ok, just setting expectations. In terms of service, the server and the owner were both nice and friendly. Food was generally good, had the hot and sour soup, Kung pao chicken, house special fried rice and pork Shitake string bean dumplings. Hot and sour soup was good, with a nice bit of spice, but not too much, Kung pao chicken was underwhelming with very little flavor and no spice at all. Fried rice was very light on proteins with 4 shrimp, 4 small pieces each of Beef and Chicken. Dumplings were very good but on the small side and at $1.50 each ($8.99 for 6) a little over priced for what you get. Staff is friendly, perhaps a little understaffed as they were running from table to table, very small location with limited seating, at $65 for two including tax and tip there are more affordable options nearby. read more

I ordered the wonton soup. The dumplings here have that light simple texture and aroma that tells you these are quality ingredients and authentic Chinese dumplings. Not every restaurant will make it right, but this place hit the spot. I also ordered the beef stir fried noodles. This is your typical stir fry and nothing special really here. Stumbled across this dumpling shop while visiting friends in Redondo Beach. First impression walking in was that all the seats were taken, which I found to be a great sign. It's a small place with less than 10 tables and we only had to wait 5 minutes to be seated. The food and menu looked pretty authentic. Their speciality was the pan fried dumplings with various fillings. We had the pork and mushroom ones and they were juicy. The pan fried bottoms were crispy and a nice contrast to the doughy tops. We also ordered the orange chicken, black pepper beef and scallion pancakes. Portions sizes were great and food came out fast and hot. I think their main entree items are a little adjusted for an American taste preference but still really good. Prices were average for the area. The two servers were beyond hospitable and kind. A mom and pop restaurant in Redondo Beach for authentic Chinese dumplings, bao and noodles is as rare as hen's teeth. The dumplings are all of the pan-fried variety ('potstickers') -- served crispy and very hot, so wait 1-2 minutes before biting into the juicy fillings. The house special stir-fry noodle and hot sour soup are decent, but the dumplings are definitely the main attraction here. I suggest you order only the dumplings and wash them all down with hot jasmine or pu'er tea. A few things that no doubt will improve over time -- slow service, dumplings taking a long time to come out,...and kitchen staff communications that sounded like an episode from "Kitchen Nightmare" (Ok I exaggerate here Lol.) read more

I'd been anticipating Jiayuan's opening for months; I drive by the restaurant when I go to work, and I always saw the sign "Coming Soon" for the longest time. That's why I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it opened just last week, and I was on-board with giving it a try. I'd tried calling in to order to-go, but the lines were busy, so I ended up going to dine in. I was the second customer upon their opening at 11AM, yet it took about 30-40 minutes to get my food. Considering that Jiayuan just opened, I understood that it was still going through growing pains with getting set up and attending to influx of customers coming through their doors, so I cut them some slack. I ordered the scallion pancake and spinach-tofu-Vermicelli dumplings. The scallion pancakes were piping hot and crispy, with plenty of chew in the middle-- a bit thicker than I would've liked, but it's just a personal preference. The spinach-tofu-Vermicelli dumplings were pan-fried and also piping hot upon arrival: the dumpling skin was just the right amount of thickness, and the filling plentiful, almost bursting at the seams. It did lack some flavor, which I attempted to douse it in the complementary soy-vinegar sauce provided to me, but my mistake was not asking for chili oil to make it better. Service was slow, but very kind and accommodating; I believe it was the daughter of the family who was doing everything, from taking orders, phone calls, serving, and clearing tables. Again, the restaurant's just starting out, and I hope that they hire more staff to help out, especially when it's so crowded! Overall, pretty good Chinese food and kind service. Even if it takes a long time for food to come out, I think Jiayuan has potential. I hope the family will hire more staff and perhaps organize their delivery service in the future so that customers could get takeout in a timely manner. Good luck to them! read more

Really wanted to like this place, but it was such a dud. $30 for a small-ish tray of house noodles, a scallion pancake, tax & tip. Notes: The noodles were not exciting and tasted more or less like spaghetti noodles, with onions, carrot, cabbage, a couple shrimp, and scant slices of velveted chicken and beef. The light sauce was the best part? The scallion pancake was not light and flaky, but was dense and chewy in the center (was the dough cold and not room temperature before cooking?). A friend picked this place for dinner and we thought we'd give it a try. It is pretty difficult to find a good chinese restaurant in this area. The service was good, the waiters were attentive and the food was served very quickly. We ordered House special fried rice, pan fried dumplings: chicken+leek and shrimp carrot combo, scallion pancake, mongolian beef, and walnut shrimp. The fried rice was flavorful and tasty (it's difficult to mess up fried rice-recipe is pretty simple). I asked the server to recommend a beef dish and he pointed to mongolian beef. This dish is pretty standard at any Chinese restaurant menu. I found the meat well marinated and flavorful. But my dad said the dish was okay, he just didnt like how they disproportionately had semi cooked onions cover over half the dish. I would say 60% onions and 40% beef. Normally at a decent restaurant they dont add that much onions. The dish's main star is supposed to be the beef and the sauce. Although I feel the taste is not bad but the price you pay for it. I would recommend you should just go to seashore seafood restaurant for a bit better chinese food. I did like the pan fried dumplings and the scallion pancake. My dad felt the meat inside the pan fried dumpling tasted more like premade frozen meat. My friend said scallion pancakes were decent but didnt have any flavor. So although it's a good appetizer snack he probably wouldnt order it again for that price. I think the walnut shrimp wasnt what I was expecting. At previous restaurants, they would just cook the shrimp and then glaze it with a thin sugar coating. At this place, they have a different cooking method which seems to be breading and frying the shrimp first then big dip in the glaze. After taking a few bites, I found that I liked the flavor but didnt really like the heavy breading around the shrimp. Even though this isnt quite on par with seashore seafood restaurant in terms of taste, I still think the food didnt taste all that bad. I quite enjoyed the pan fried dumplings and fried rice. But I dont know if I would come again for these prices. I prefer to drive out to Monterey Park and pay around the same price for better quality. read more

Came by myself on a Friday night and was pleasantly greeted by such friendly staff. I took a seat and service was prompt. The food came out very quickly and it was all delicious. I ordered the scallion pancake, pork/shiitake/green bean dumplings and the wonton soup. All came out very hot and fresh. I enjoyed every bite! The restaurant itself is small and cozy but extremely clean. It is a well taken care of space and you can tell the owners care. While eating, I noticed a number of customers coming in who knew the staff. These customers are regulars. Meaning this restaurant cares about their customers and forms meaningful relationships with those who come in. I thought that was so neat! It's rare to find that type of service nowadays. Let me start off by saying, that I've been to this location twice. It has blown my expectations out of the park. Super chill location in a sense where you feel like it's a family owned business. The service is quick and efficient. The staff is friendly and helpful with questions you may have. I will say that their vegetarian options in dumplings really pack in the flavor. I was so happy with my choices. First time I went I order pork belly with glass noodles. That alone made me want to come back. The flavor!!! Omg! The first time I came here the food was decent. I had a dumpling craving and it was sufficiently fulfilled even though I've had better dumplings elsewhere. However the last time I came in with my family we did not have a great experience. The dumpling filling and skins had an off taste and although may have been handmade at some point, tasted like they were made from old frozen dumplings and the pot stickers were not particularly crisp at the bottom like they should be. Also they stopped making boiled dumplings and only have pot stickers for some reason. A place called dumpling house should have both, at a minimum. read more
