This is the place to go if you want ramen. The place is a little small but it feels purposeful so as to make sure each dish is crafted perfectly, which it was. By the time my brother and I arrived, we were the only customers. My brother ordered the spicy shio tonkatsu while I got the spicy miso. I don't order ramen often but when it arrived, I was blown away by the size. The spicy miso was absolutely delicious. The broth was thick, flavorful, and not too spicy and the noodles were great. I only managed to eat half my ramen and it looked like the perfect amount for another meal that could satisfy me. Something that surprised me a little bit was that there were no napkins. The table was set with a box of tissues.
I enjoyed my visit! I had a spicy ground chicken ramen. I liked that I could add a side of rice or salad for about $4 more. The service was really helpful, stopping by to check in 3-4 times during our meal. The only downside was not being able to order alcohol alongside my meal. The decor is pretty cool, and it's purposefully old-timey.
Ordered 2 ramens & 1 with a gyoza, fried rice, & salad combo ($45 including tip) The food was delicious & my boyfriend loves this place. The service was great, the servers were attentive. It is a bit warm inside. The broth is thick & packed with flavor! I like how the broth coats the noodles where you don't need to bring the soup with the noodles, even though I'm a soup girl. I want to come back to try other times!
Got the Combination A with Ramen (Tonkotsu Chashu). Pretty, pretty, pretty good. The Karaage was crispy and juicy. The salad dressing was ginger based. The broth was rich and flavorful. The Chashu was plentiful. The ramen was Al dente. Seating is available at the counter or tables. Service was very friendly. Parking can be an issue. I went there on a Saturday around 16:00. Ended up parking on the residential street.
Wanted ramen while in the area and found this place online. Walking in truly transports you to a old style ramen shop in Japan. The decoration is cool to look at and really contributes to the ambiance. We were seated immediately and ordered quickly. The older lady who helped us was super attentive and nice and very welcoming. Tonkotsu Ramen: 8/10, The broth was pretty good and there were loads of topping. It was rich and creamy and the texture of the noodles were perfect. We did find it a bit oily but overall pretty good. Spicy Miso: 6/10, In a similar vain to the tonkotsu, the noodle texture was perfect and there loads of topping. I found the broth to have a decent hint of spicy but it was somehow very bland. I did find it a bit oily as well. Overall, the food here is pretty solid. The staff were amazing and it's a nice place to stop and have a quick meal.
I was not expecting much when I visited Jidaiya Ramen on a whim during a sleepy weekday lunch. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service provided by the two ladies at the restaurant upon entering and dining here. I got so accustomed to experiencing lousy service in Gardena and Torrance as of late, so I was extra surprised for all the good reasons. The spicy miso ramen I had did not disappoint. It had lots of toppings that made it extra satiating. The chashu was a bit on the overcooked side and very lean for my taste. Nothing bad. Just not what I am accustomed to. It was also not very spicy, but the server told me I can have it adjusted to spicier taste the next time. The gyoza was nice and crispy. Loved how well seasoned the fillings were and I could skip the extra seasonings. Hardly had to wait for my orders to come piping hot and the attentive service really helped make the dining experience pleasant. I can't emphasize that enough. It's rare to find that especially in that particular area. Love the retro Showa style decor too. The only issue I had per se was the lack of air conditioning and tight parking spaces. It would be also nice if they can bring the POS to the table to use ApplePay. Either way, I look forward to returning again in the future!
The ramen here usually hits the spot if you are looking for something hearty and quick. The ramen noodles are thicker and the soup is flavorful and creamy. It can be a tad bit oily depending on what you order so be mindful of that. I usually add vinegar to my broth if that's the case. There are plenty of toppings on the standard order but you can definitely add more. Service is friendly and attentive. I have only been here once when there was a wait but it wasn't too long. Max time has been 10mins. Inside has a few tables and has a rustic feel of traditional Japanese ramen shops. They have some Japanese inspired art pieces hanging around restaurant. Parking on the weekdays hasn't been much of an issue but not sure what it's like on the weekend.
This might be my favorite ramen place in town. Jidaiya's tonkotsu ramen is very rich, salty and porky. The other ramen spots tonkotsu broth tend to be lighter. Jidaiya ramen has a lot of other nice options. I really enjoyed the tsukemen ramen, the shoyu ramen and the spicy ramen options as well. The cold noodle salad served during summer is very tasty. I also appreciate how authentic this place feels. The restaurant is a little dark and comforting, with Japanese news in the background. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Jidaiya definitely feels like a great neighborhood ramen spot.
Holy, this place blew me away and exceeded my expectations. We decided to try this spot for dinner before going to LAX and it did not disappoint. We came on a Thursday night and there was no wait. We were seated and I was immediately surprised by the price of each ramen bowl. It was around $10-$13 for each bowl depending on the soup base. I haven't seen those prices in years! We both added a combo which came with karaage, fried rice, and a cabbage salad. The karaage was sooo juicy. The shoyu ramen I got was super clean and savory. The tonkotsu ramen was a little saltier for my taste, but my girlfriend really enjoyed it (I prefer less heavy broths). We will definitely be coming back again!
Service was very welcoming + friendly!! Although I'm usually one to opt for tonkotsu, the Tokyo Yatai (chicken + shoyu) broth seemed promising and I was not disappointed. A piping hot bowl was delivered quickly and the broth was just as good as I had hoped. The inside is cozy like an izakaya, and I'll definitely be back! Called and they said there was no wait. We rushed over since we were so hungry and some near by spots had a 40 minute line. This place was busy but it was quick to get a table. We ordered and our food came out in 5 minutes! Very fast service. Tables felt busy but plenty of room and quiet enough for us to talk at a normal volume. Very tasty. Planning to come back soon.
I love discovering hidden mom-and-pop spots like this one. The dipping ramen, (tsukemen), broth was flavorful. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely enjoyable. The staff was warm, welcoming, and very accommodating, which made the experience even better. The strip mall has several other restaurants I'm looking forward to trying, but this place is a solid stop worth checking out.
Maybe you won't find the best ramen in town here, but it comes close. Based on the overall experience, I promise you that you'll leave happy. Situated in a large shopping center full of Japanese-based businesses, Jidaiya certainly plays an important role in attracting customers. The texture of the noodle could be better, and the broth is quite rich and flavorful. I ordered the shellfish ramen, which is not something that I find in most ramen establishments. I particularly enjoyed the tobiko (fish roe) as a garnish in the bowl. It's a hot summer evening, but fear not for breaking out in a sweat while eating hot ramen because they have air conditioning at full blast. The decor is eclectic, and the dining space is a bit more cluttered than necessary, but I am just being picky. Service is very attentive, as my water cup was filled no less than three times. Every ethnic community has places they eat at more than others because the food is good and, best of all, local. This is one of them. Location: On Western Avenue and 186th Street about 1 block north of the 405 freeway between the border of Torrance and Gardena. Next door to The Local Place and across the street from the Toyota Dealer lot. I got the Tonkotsu Ramen bowl with a side of fried chicken that came with fried rice and salad. The ramen was rich and savory. It's the kind of ramen you would make yourself if you had the time. It's not the same kind of broth you find at most ramen joints that's thin and an oil layer so thick, you'd think you had dipped your tongue in a teaspoon of cooking oil. This broth was full of flavor and savory. The fried chicken was perfectly fried and crunchy. I wasn't a fan of the fried rice. Summary: The service was friendly and obviously run by a family. The ambiance was very casual and definitely populated by locals who had been here many times before. The walls were covered with local events and drawings from children (customers?) and local teams. Nothing fancy here, just good local food run by a small business owner. I can see why this place weathered the storm of COVID and survived when so many others didn't. The locals know good food and will support them when times are tough and are worth supporting. This is one of them. Give them a try and skip the larger eateries. Come here instead. This small Japanese restaurant was pretty empty on a weekday night and I like that there is plenty of parking in the plaza. I really enjoyed the Kai-shio (shellfish) ramen, especially since I'm not a big fan of thick ramen broths. I love being able to drink my soup in soupy dishes and the fact that this chicken and shellfish broth was light and flavorful made me love it! The broth was sweet and there was a generous portion of abalone bits and shellfish chunks in the ramen. The ramen noodles were cooked al dente and very filling and for $15, it was pretty worth it! They also have combinations where you can add on a small dish to the ramen for just $4 which is nice if you want another meal to go. While some of y'all may know, ya girl here, although half Japanese, is not a huge fan of the food of my peeps, Ramen included (squinty face emoji). This place though transported me back in time, to when I would visit my mom in J-town WAYYYYY Back when. The service was also very "back in the days" circa 1980's Little Tokyo J-town. The waiter was attentive, yet in a quaint gentle manner. I tried the Tonkatsu Ramen and the broth was extremely tasty, with just the right amount of fat that glistened ever so gently at the brim of my bowl. The prices are also very very reasonable. Found this little ramen shop on accident. My fiancé and I were supposed to go to the local place and ended up in the plaza next door. Parked in front and decided to try it. Went in on a Sunday evening for dinner and saw that the restaurant had many customers. We were greeted by the staff and we're seated immediately. Took a look at the menu and saw that they had many appetizers, ramen, and bento meal options. My fiancé got the fried chicken, Jidaiya fried rice, and ramen combo. I got the chicken cutlet curry with a side of fried chicken. Our server took our drink and food order quickly and our food came out after 15-20 minutes. The portions are pretty big and price is reasonable. We both enjoyed our meals and look forward to coming back to try out more menu items. read more

Saw this on instagram that they have $9.95 ramen!? They actually do! The shoyu ramen is $9.95. However, I ordered the tonkotsu for $12 , since that is what the server recommended to me. My friend got the tsukemen, she wasn't a fan , since she is a die-hard ts*jita fan I think, the tsukemen is more watery and has different noodle type than ts*jita. I prefer my tonkotsu broth. We ordered the takoyaki for appetizer and I recommend you to get it!! They are amazing! The service is quick . Will come back for 2nd time! read more

A friend recommended this place and it did not disappoint! It has a very charming character and aesthetic as you enter the shop. Old posters, newspaper clippings, and analog television, I had the tonkotsu ramen and my significant other try their spicy shio tonkotsu ramen. (Which there are 3 levels, the first level was already very hot! ) The soup base is very flavorful and on the thicker side. They use thicker noodles which work well with the broth! I've been coming here for years! This is my staple ramen shop in the Torrance/Gardena area. I love this ramen shop with its impressive Japanese decor and warm ambiance, it really transports me to Japan every time I come here. But of course I couldn't recommend this place if the food wasn't good. I absolutely love the chashu tonkotsu ramen and the price is way better than other places! The broth is so flavorful, the noodles are nice and bouncy, and the chashu is delicately tender. Also the owner is always so welcoming and working diligently to serve every customer, his consistency over the years is really impressive! I was in the neighborhood and accidentally discover Jidaiya. Being the first time dining there, I was pleasantly surprised. We had the Tonkotsu shio ramen and the broth flavor was intense and rich, just the way I like it. Also had generous portion of topping and veggies. I especially love the sheets of seaweed and spoonful of toasted sesame that added the crunch, flavor and texture to the ramen. The only minor imperfection were the thinly sliced chashu. Sadly they were not my favorite as it's slight on the lean, tougher side. Please improve on the chashu, other than that, it's an awesome bowl of ramen! The noodles were cooked el dente. I'm a ramen snob and this place is pretty legit! We also order a side of takoyaki. These were one of the largest takoyaki, with a nice outer crunch and soft, gooey filling with plenty of octopus. If you're very hungry, they offer a combo with the order of ramen. The combo are very fair priced and lot of selection to choose from. Friendly service, proactive about asking if we needed 2 smaller bowls as we were sharing a bowl of ramen. The ambience is dated but feels homey like a true mom and pop shop. Though the dated feel didn't bother me much since the food is pretty good. I mean, come on, where can you find a bowl of decent ramen that still cost under $15!! Talk about value and good food. Regarding napkins, there were boxes of tissues. Which I thought it was a nice gesture as it's soft. With the hot bowl of soup, I appreciate the little touch of soft tissues. It's an odd thing, but it was thoughtful. I highly suggest this place whenever you're in the neighborhood. It's hard to be a small business especially in this economy. If I need a consistent, tasty bowl of ramen, Jidaiya is a darn good choice. You're welcomed into an old school Japanese noodle house, complete with slightly rusty and charming signage advertising Kikkoman shoyu and a Sharp-brand CRT TV set hooked up to a VCR. Then there's the eats. I had the miso tonkotsu ramen, a good, traditional soup with better-than-average thicker noodles. I probably should have ordered the extra chashu pork, otherwise the garnish was satisfactory (maybe a bit of bamboo shoots would be a welcome addition). Gyoza was also solid, I split an order of the six (6) Gyoza, more than adequate. Service is great, attentive without being overbearing. What gives this place a five-star rating is the value. $10 for a fully satisfying ramen serving, other menu items also appeared well worth the price. Next time I may get a side order of curry rice, it looked rather appetizing. It's a stand-alone local business well worth supporting. As I said, next time is curry time! read more

came here for a weekday lunch with a friend during the holidays. this place gets packed and warm, but it may have been a workplace holiday lunch that took up most tables. because we arrived before this large group, we ordered at the perfect time and got our food almost immediately! service was attentive but patient with us while we decided on our dishes. the food is a good portion size. don't sleep on the ramen combos! it was like $4 to add chicken karage, which also came with your choice of white or fried rice, and salad. would definitely come back here for ramen, it's also located next to 7leaves and an ice cream shop, so plenty of dessert spots to choose from after your meal. read more

One of my favorite ramen places in this area - the tonkotsu broth here is as rich and velvety as anywhere we've tried- it warms the belly and soul! If feeling hungry an order of potstickers or karaage are also top notch here. Inside is cozy with lots of tables or a bar type option for solo or couples. Dunno how many times I've been here - and fairly certain the check-in count on Yelp is incorrect because I tend to forget to check in to a lot of places. So, needless to say, this review is long overdue. Here goes ... In the same plaza as Kansha. Other notable places but mentioning it so you know where to go for dessert afterwards. Parking has never been an issue for me. And it's free. I don't believe there are restrictions but I wouldn't leave treat the lot like long term parking at the airport. Walk in and wait to be seated. Counter seating and tables. Large groups can be accommodated - last visit there, a party of eight was seated as I was leaving. There's enough room for more but there would likely be a wait as tables would need to be available to fit more people. Service is fine. Present. If/when needed, I only needed to get their attention. It's not a large place and the staff stays busy clearing plates/utensils/tables so it's pretty easy to catch their eye. And as for the food, I like it enough to make it back again and again. I've had dishes I didn't like (don't ask because I don't remember) and the ones I've liked were solid enough that I've ordered them again. It's not too salty and it's also not too light for my taste. I like the appetizers on their Happy Menu as the servings are small leaving room for what I came in for. Ramen. The noodles have always been served to my liking. When I bite into them, there's like a squeak. Just past al dente. Not soggy but also not raw. If you've had noodles of this consistency, you'll know what I mean. So, yeah - been here more than a few times. Even brought family here. So, I like how the dishes are simple and consistent. A place I go to when I know what I want and I get what I expect. read more

We love the food here and we've been coming here for years, but not long ago we stopped coming because a posting in social media made this place nearly impossible to come in without waiting behind a long line. The sheeps, as I like to call them, are now gone and it's back to "normal" levels again so we decided it's time to return. Don't get me wrong, I was happy for this place but it was too crowded for a while and we all know that's only temporary, but now, some of their loyal customers are already gone to other places too, taking some of their business away from them for a longer time so in the long run, it doesn't look like it benefited them, and I hope that I'm wrong but the place did look very empty nowadays. The food here is like being back in Japan, it's one of the few keeping the original flavors of Japan and that's the reason why we love it here. It's simple but has that warmth and it feels like I'm back in Fussa inside the small dining place again. I hope to come back more often now that the long waiting lines are gone! read more

I honestly wasn't expecting much when I came to Jidaiya, especially since there's an abundance of ramen in Gardena. After trying it, I'm pleasantly surprised. I had the Chashu Yatai and it was delicious. The broth is more on the rich and oily side, and it's definitely filling. Prices here are also very reasonable. Jidaiya is considerably cheaper than other ramen places which definitely boosted its score. Service was also pretty good, and there's an abundance of parking. Really enjoyed our experience here. Stopped in on a Friday evening about 7:30pm and were quickly seated at their ramen bar. We got one tonkotsu ramen & spicy Sapporo miso ramen, both with extra chasu for about $15 a bowl. The spicy miso doesn't come with egg so you have the add that extra for $2, which I did of course. I will say it seems like a regular soft boiled egg and I wish it was a miso or soy marinated egg. Either way, it was great. We also got their six piece UFO dumpling. The prices here are really fair, which isn't something I'm saying too often when dining out these days.. Starting with the ramen, really good.. the noodles thick & chewy and the broth is thick and rich. The egg was cooked perfectly and chasu would fall apart and meld with each bite. My partners tonkotsu broth was also thick and very porky. Both were very different but fabulous in their own way. The UFO dumplings had a both soft & crunchy vibe to them, which I loved. I actually dipped my dumpling into the broth of my ramen, which was so delicious. Service was good and attentive and ramen came out fast. I think for two bowls of ramen (with extra chasu and egg added) plus the dumplings it came out to like $54 with 20% tip. We didn't get any drinks besides water and I don't think they serve alcohol or anything. Overall, great experience and great ramen. The place feels very authentic and the clientele is mostly Japanese, so that's saying something of itself. This area has a lotttt of good ramen so I'll probably try a few other spots before I rush back here but either way, you won't be disappointed with the ramen at Jidaiya and it's most certainly worth a try.
