As mentioned by another reviewer, the portions are a bit small for the prices. One of the best buys is probably the Pork Riblets & fries. I had the Pulled Beef Brisket. It was ok but a little dried out. The skin was burnt as well so I had to almost drown it in BBQ sauce just to enjoy the quality of the food. The grilled corn on the cob and cinnamon apples were good. I enjoyed those. The chocolate cake was awesome!! Rich, soft chocolate in an old-fashioned crust topped with whip cream. Service definitely deserves a 4.5 as our water cups were constantly full and our waiter moved quickly at each of our requests. read more

The only decent part of this establishment is the cheese biscuits they bring pre-meal. I don't even think those are worth the calories. I prefer other BBQ establishments like Saws or Dreamland Southside. Jim & Nicks does carry a wide variety of items besides bbq. If you prefer salads they have 'em. read more

We were debating on not going to this location (due to it just being 3.5 stars & other locations was better rated). We decided to go ahead and give it a try. Glad we did! It wasn't the best that we've had but surely better than expected. Items that we tried; ribs (pretty darn good, could of been just a little more tender but not bad at all), coleslaw (OK), French fries (they were French fries OK :-), smoked wings (great, would surely recommend not getting the mild or hot sauce that it comes with, we asked for it on the side & glad we did, but tried it & truly messes up the flavor of the smokes wings), collard greens (OK for a restaurant, of course not like grandma's) & Mac & cheese (OK for a restaurant, nice browned layer of cheese on top). Overall would recommend for BBQ and when we're in the area again we will be eating there. :-) read more

The building caught our eye and the wonderful smells led us inside before we headed to the airport. Sat in the bar area, and was pleased to see they had some local craft brews on tap including Rev Muldoons that is brewed especially for Jim N Nicks. Because I was there for work, sadly I had to say no to a brew. No apps for us, but the cheese muffin cornbread biscuits things were delicious. You can even buy a bag of mix to take home. I had the country salad with the grilled turkey on top. I didn't get the entree portion and it was still plenty to fill me up. Homemade croutons and BBQ ranch dressing, yum yum! Co-worker had the 2 meat platter which was served with two sides and they aren't kidding, it's a platter! Coming from Texas we have been known to be BBQ snobs, but the co-worker approved of the ribs, brisket and sauce. It was a little much for lunch and I wasn't surprised he couldn't finish everything. No desert after the meal, but what they had was oh so tempting! They are kinda proud of their meat price-wise, but if you are in the mood for BBQ I would give it a try. I have love this place for years but the past two visits have been extremely disappointing. The time before last we had a waiter who had just started on the job. It took for ever to get drinks and our food. We told the manager and he seemed very unconcerned. Tonight we went again and as we were ordering we were told that they had no chicken breasts available. This was on aFriday night and not having chicken breasts in a popular restaurant is Ridiculous. We were told that they had sent someone to the grocery store to get some chicken breasts but had no idea when they would arrive. They have also changed the bread on the grilled chicken sandwich from sourdough to what they call Texas toast. What they call Texas toast was actually two pieces of plain white bread that were barely toasted. I believe we will stay away from there for a while until they can get their act back together. read more

Jim N Nick's has historically been one of my favorite Bbq places in Birmingham. I love their "Pig in the" salad. After what happened tonight at their Greystone location, I doubt I will go back anytime soon if at all. I found a chewed up toothpick in my pig in the garden salad. Our server was terrific about it but the management staff was like, "we don't allow toothpicks in our kitchen." Our response was, "then that makes it worse." When the bill came the salad was still on the check for full price. We asked and they said they could not comp the salad--we didn't even ask to have the meal comped--just my salad. They did offer to take half off the salad ($5) with a $10 gift card to come back. Oh, and they offered all of us free dessert. Are you kidding? I was seriously disappointed in their management's lack of taking responsibility or having accountability in this matter. read more

As far as the food goes, I feel like Jim 'N' Nick's is pretty much the same across locations. This was no exception. The problem came with the service. God love him, the boy tried, but our party of about 20 was just too much for him. We had a feeling we were headed for trouble when they refused to take individual orders for families. As in "I'll take a potato and my son over there, #7, will have the barbecue mac and cheese". No, it had to be one big long ticket they would separate later. Much later, as it turns out. It was like one of the great scientific questions of our time, trying to get all the correct orders grouped together. It honestly took at least an hour AFTER we were done to get the orders straight. One of our group was a general manager of another restaurant in town and used the same computer system they did, so he went and helped so we could get out of there. The biggest problem is that there was no apology or free drink or anything for our wait. Every time we tried to ask for our tickets, they just said, "I know it's taking a while, they will be right with you." To me, mistakes and problems are always a possibility and are very forgivable is acknowledged and even apologized for. I don't expect all kinds of free stuff, but please act like you are at least apologetic. I don't want to hear blame or excuses, only solutions. read more

This location is the worst I've been to ever. and sadly right by my house. Every time we pick up food it is wrong. I've waited over 15 minutes in drive thru just to be told we are out of potatoes or we don't have biscuits. Apparently the side for the drive thru is a different kitchen then the main kitchen and they can't go to the main kitchen and get what they are missing. ‍ it's a shame they can't get it right here cause it's a great location and when the food is good it really good.. but when it's 95% of the time bad it just is a no brained not to return. read more

This location has been my go-to spot for a few months now. It is located in a convenient location and I never have to travel too far to get a great bite. I haven't tried their pork products, but my favorite dish is their BBQ chicken. I typically order the quarter leg and thigh dark with a side of macaroni and cheese with collard greens. Their chicken is juicy and the BBQ sauce is savory and delicious. My favorite side to pair with the chicken are the collard greens. The greens are very tender and well seasoned. I enjoy the two cheese cornbread muffins that are complementary with the dish. It is a great addition to the meal and better than any muffin I've had at a BBQ restaurant. Jim N Nicks is also Covid friendly by providing drive-thru service that is easily accessible from highway 280. You can prevent dining-in and get the same quality and experience ordering to-go. The staff wore masks and ensured my order was correct as always. I highly recommend trying the BBQ chicken at this restaurant. You would not be disappointed! read more

I went through the drive-thru and it was somewhat slow, but they were very busy. The food is okay; the pork is dry even with sauce and slaw on it. I didn't get my white sauce for my chicken sandwich. Also, they were out mixed fruit for a kid's meal. I know that honey butter for biscuits is only given when requested, but I still didn't receive it. We got our order to-go so I can't comment on the atmosphere, however the food was very good. We did notice an impressive bourbon menu at the bar. We had the family BBQ dinner. The BBQ was great, juicy and lots of flavor. There was not enough meat for 6 sandwiches though, maybe 4. Sides were decently sized, we had the baked beans and creamed collards and can recommend them both. My friend had a salad, which was huge and looked really fresh. All in all, we were glad to try Jim & Nick's. We are from out of town, it came highly recommended, and we see why. read more

First time ordering Jim 'N Nick's in a very long time and It was everything I wanted. I ordered take out. I called to place my order the young woman that took my order over the phone was very nice, she made sure my order was correct and suggested more items on the menu. She told me that my order will be up in 10-15 minutes. I got there and picked up my food and was out the door. The only thing that concerned me was COVID-19 restrictions walking up it was a lot of people crowded around the outside door I guess waiting to be seated, but had no mask on. As I walked in I notice that the workers were taking proper cautions as in wearing masks. Overall I enjoyed the service and food was great! read more

This is a family favorite. BBQ is great, with a good variety of smoked meats--brisket, pork, ribs, turkey and chicken. We love the loaded baked potatoes and the southern chopped salad. Throw in the heavenly cheese biscuits and pies (how do they get the crust so flaky??) and you've got happy diners. Not five stars because sometimes takeout has a big delay and the salads seem to have less and less quantities of special ingredients, like croutons, roasted corn and pecans. It makes them a bit less of a treat, though still good. Table service is always quick and super friendly. I appreciate that they have moved their menu to all freshly prepared ingredients, though we still mourn the loss of the cinnamon apples! Food is good for bar-b-que, average and really expensive. We are not talking about eating at a serious restaurant, so the prices should reflect one. There is a drive through that they should really stop. It takes an unthinkable amount of time to place and get your order. We ordered a half smoked, pulled chicken, 4 buns and a small order of collared greens. It was quite a disappointment! Shame on them, there was not enough chicken for 4 sandwiches. SERVICE SUCKED FROM BEGINNING TO THE END!!! Once seated it took about 6 minutes for our server to take drink orders. After we were given our drinks she took off, they were watered down so we had to get another server to give us some more drinks because she was no where in sight. We waited another 15 minutes ,still no cheddar biscuits, so I got up and went to the greeter out front but just as I got to them she was walking out with them. Once we finally got our food it was very good. Before we finished dining we wanted more biscuits, told the server and they never came, SURPRISE!!! Well when she brought out the take out boxes I said to her "I guess u forgot the biscuits." She finally went and got more and said she would bring out the check. Never once did she ask if everything was together or separate. They were separate. She walked by , dropped off the one check and kept walking. So we waited another few minutes for her to pick up the check and that is when I said they were seperate. Another couple of minutes for her to split it. Well needless to say, her service was reflected in her tip which was $0!!! As soon as I sit, the tip starts to count down. Every time I have to ask for something, it's a deduction!!! I can't really rate the food this trip because we walked out. At 7:30pm on a Wednesday they were out of french fries, baked potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. None of those items have a short shelf life. The last several times we've tried we've been disappointed. Maybe we'll try again next year. This is probably my favorite bbq restaurant. They have delicious cheese biscuits that are similar to a pancake with cheese and garlic formed into a shape of a muffin. Sweet, savory and scrumptious! The bbq is nicely smoked with pecan and oak. They have a thin bbq sauce made in house that had a slight spicy kick. The banana pudding is to die for! It's got fresh bananas and fresh whipped cream with a warm custard and light cookies. They offer a diverse menu, the chili is top notch topped with fresh jalapeño peppers, red onions and sour cream. The salads have grape tomatoes and almond slices, topped with fresh croutons and bacon pieces. They have a full bar menu and serve local craft beer. This is a perfect location for large parties or a date night. read more

I am usually not the type to write bad reviews about businesses but this is the third disappointing experience on food and service. Let me start off by saying that Jim 'N Nick's is a family favorite and they are in an ideal, convenient location with being just outside of Greystone and just over the hill from Chelsea. The visit before last was just terrible. I order a pork sandwich- no bun, beans and homemade chips. When our food arrived I got a 10 inch round dirty plate with a scoop of meat in the middle. No sides just a scoop of meat on a plate that looked like it hadn't been washed. My husband got the servers attention and a couple minutes later she brought my sides. The homemade chips were soggy- like not edible. My husband asked to see a manager and as I sat there I kept getting more mad because we waited over 10 mins for him. The manager never came. My husband finally got up and went into their open kitchen to speak with the manager. The manager did not care. My husband asked for the GM's card and it was never brought he finally walked over to the office and got a card from another manager. My husband went back up to the restaurant the next day and spoke with the GM about our experience. Fast forward to Memorial Day week. It had been a few months since we visited there and so we decided to give it another shot. My favorite is the kitchen sink nachos with chicken. The server told me they were all out of chicken. Jokingly, I said, "all out of chicken?!" I asked if Memorial Day wiped them out? She said, no, one of our employees didn't do first in, first out and all the chicken spoiled. I can't make this up! If a restaurant does not know how to follow FIFO procedure we have a major issue. I hope someone sees this review that will do something about it. This location continues to decline. I will be driving to the Hoover or Alabaster location from now on where they seem to care. read more

Last night, I brought it home and put the meat portion on a scale...including the tin foil it was wrapped in it came in just under 3 ounces. Not what it used to be. I've always been such a fan of Jim N' Nicks but this location has never gotten my order correct. When I lived on 280 I visited two or three times but quickly found out that I should just stop by the Hoover location while at work rather than attempt to enjoy the location so close to my home. My order was incorrect when both dining in and taking out. Granted, it is my fault for not checking my order before I left but by the time I would get home I would discover not only was my order incorrect, but practically thrown together. My experiences when dining in were no better. My go-to at this establishment is the BBQ nachos. Simple enough, but apparently made too complicated by me omitting lettuce from my order. Every single time that I've ordered the nachos they've come with lettuce despite my requesting it be removed. When I pointed out that my order was incorrect I would either be met with disregard and impatience or they would simply pick the lettuce of, leaving scraps of the vegetable behind. Although I love Jim N' Nicks I would highly recommend visiting the Hoover or downtown location and not the 280 restaurant. read more

We have eaten here a number of times. I always find the sliced brisket to be really good whether on the sandwich or the plate. Also, the french fries are good as are all of the sides. I have tried the chicken and sausage. The chicken was good, but I really did not care for the sausage. It was just too greasy for me. But I just really prefer brisket so these probably would be good to most. I have never had to wait long for seating and the service has always been good. I never go to restaurants during prime feeding time, though. This place is packed then. They have a full bar and beer on draft. Everyone raves about the cheese biscuits and they are good, but I find them too sweet and really prefer southern corn bread (which unlike Yankee corn bread is not sweet). Jim and Nicks is my preferred BBQ restaurant in Birmingham, but it is not as good as smoking a brisket all day long at home. It is fine, though, when the urge for good brisket hits you. If you are a fan of pork which I know a number of you are, I just do not know. I have not eaten enough of that to be in a position to recommend or not. I do understand that Jim and Nicks uses locally raised products, including their pork. I can attest that all the food is generally fresh when in season. Oh, I am not a dessert eater. This is not a health thing. I just never much cared for sweets. However, I am told by none other than my wife, and others, that the pies are excellent. They are made in house fresh daily, I understand. If you want to eat at home, they have a lively drive-through which is always busy. read more

I will NEVER go back to this place again. Our party of four ate here on Friday, Feb 6, 2009 around 3:00. The service was horrible, the staff very unprofessional and arguing with each other. The food was awful! Three out of four of us ended up getting food poisoning. One person in our party was violently ill. It took him 48 hours to be able to stomach anything. The other two had milder cases, but still.... I would recommend not visiting this location. I heard their other location in five points is better, but I won't chance it after this experience.
