Went to JJ's cafe for the first time and I ordered the chilaquiles which were okay. The salsa was not too spicy and the chicken was a bit dry. I also ordered some pumpkin pancakes and I will say those are some of the best pancakes I've had. The pumpkin flavor is there and not overly sweet. Will definitely be coming back for those pancakes. Our waiter was amazing he took care of us well and for our order in super quickly. Food came out pretty fast! Keep in mind that the restaurant does get pretty busy so there will be a bit of a wait but overall they seated us pretty quickly. read more

JJs is an institution here in the Old Lake Highlands/ Lake Highlands area. Food has been consistently good. I come here a couple times a month. Service the staff is friendly and accommodating. Ambiance, here's where things have kind of gone down hill a bit. Kids running around unsupervised. Loud noisy family gatherings. Long waits dirty tables because they are rushing to clear the table for the next guest. My most recent visit I discovered a gross syrupy stain on my clothes probably from the chair I was sitting in. I can't recommend coming here on the weekends. Weekdays seem to be more pleasant here. I know much of my experience here in the weekends was tainted by the clientele, nothing the restaurant can really control. read more

We called ahead to reserve a table and they allowed us! Once we arrived we were already on teh list and were seated immidiatley getting there. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros , Green chilaquiles w/ Birria, and an american breakfast. First the Huevos rancheros were good and spicy, the menu says it comes with some torillas but my sister was never given any, and when asked the lady said it was on the bottom of the eggs - just a little confused. I had teh green chilaquiles and they were okay, not spicy and the birria was actually good. They gave me a small cup on the size of it - it was well flavored, again no tortillas with mine either. The portions were okay would have like more beans but the flavors and dish were good! the American breakfast was simple just eggs and hashbrowns with sauges links. Was really busy when we left and there was a line to pay to get out the door with only one girl at the register. It made it on our list to try again when we come back to Dallas. read more

Wow this is a hidden gem in Dallas! We had the Super Chilaquiles with Birria meat, and also elected to have both red and green salsas on our chilaquiles. We were in heaven with that plate alone, but then tried the crunchy French toast that has sliced almost and corn flakes cooked on to the bread. The crunchiness of this dish was amazing. I am sometimes amazed at reviews on here. Then again, perhaps I caught this place on a bad day when the regular staff and cooks were off. We had just missed the posted breakfast buffet times by 20 minutes and we were shown to a table. The place was about 1/4 full. The mirrors made it seem bigger than it was. There is a large adjacent room closed off with a sliding partition and people were filtering into it. The furniture reminded me of a large Chinese Buffet. After what seemed like they gave us time to memorize the order, they took our order. I ordered the Country Scramble and a short stack of pancakes. My iced tea set a bad tone as it had a funky taste and I don't mean funky good like Niles Rodgers or George Clinton. I bet they would have agreed. The food came out somewhat quickly as we discovered the buffet was still open and our waitress didn't even give us that option. My scramble looked way better than it was. The potatoes were cold and the green peppers tasted old. The eggs were slightly over cooked. The pancakes were crumbly in a soft way. Service was slow and had to be reminded to bring syrup and refills more than 2 times. Not a good encounter this time. read more

I really had high hopes for this place as im big on reading reviews prior to going to eat anywhere. Took forever before someone came to ask us about drinks. The waitress was an older lady seemed like she was hard of hearing. We were sat down before a party of 6 and it took over an hour for our food to come out. I had drank 2 cups of coffee and still no food. Our food came out at the same time as the party of 6. My chilaquiles were all soggy and steak overcooked and prob like room temp. You could tell it was sitting up there and no one had brought it out. The girl who brought our food was not even our waitress. My husband asked for red onions on his burger and it was missing. Plus it was cold and the bread was soggy. Also, his cheeseburger had shredded cheese on it. Not sure if this is a Texas thing.. but was very odd. Then, she leaves our check at the table along with bringing the food. Is that normal? I've never seen that in Chicago. That to me speaks like eat and get out. Like we're not gonna be checked on after that. Plus we didn't to be honest. I was gonna ask for a to go cup but no one was around so we just left. This is exactly how i left my plate. Came here for Sunday brunch. They have a buffet on Saturday and Sunday with build your own mimosa bar til 130pm. The atmosphere is as anti hipster as it comes. Familied with kids and a good deal of seniors enjoying themselves. I was cracking up at the older couple taking turns on who was going to go get the next mimosas. Atmosphere looks like a banquet hall and they do cater I see. Service was just OK so they lose a star. Most everyone got the buffet so not much was needed but slow to refill water, slow to clear plates/glasses, and a little stingy with the napkins. Food was above average. French toast was delicious. Came in here after seeing so many posts about this place. It was near my home and actually never passed by the area. They have a salon in the side as well that they use as restaurant space and you can also rent it for events. It was Sunday and the lovely waitress mentioned menudo and I thought why not. The menudo was very good the spices were on point and not chewy at all. My wife and I had to get an order of the tres leches pancakes and omg that stuff right there is delicious. My wife ordered the huevos divorciados which were eggs fried on top of corn tortillas smothered in green and red sauce. After several years we returned to this place after hearing that it has improved. I suppose that is true: from abysmal before to average now. It remains a modest restaurant. On the positive side, it is mostly clean. But my fork was dirty as I found out upon being seated. Not a good start. For Sunday, it offers off the menu or break buffet options. We opted for off the menu. The food remains mediocre. My eggs were so well done that they could be used for basketballs. The sausage patties were ok but warm rather than hot. The O'Brien potatoes were ok. I suspect that our food sat for a while before it was brought to our table. The wife's sunny side up were cooked to perfection. The bacon was crispy as requested. Her potatoes tasted funky. The service was slow. Yet again people who came in after us were served way before us. It seems to be a theme in our lives. At least the waitress pointed us to cheaper options so she was trying to save us some money. But she was not attentive, never asking how the food was and not coming by for refills on coffee. The coffee, by the way, was not good. I think it will be a few years before we return to this place. read more

JJ's has zero ambiance. Won't seat you until all in party are present. (Even if the other person is just parking the car.) The food is very good, but we waited AT THE TABLE 35 minutes before someone came and took our drink orders. Then waited and the table seated AFTER us was receiving their food before we even ordered. I invited a friend for her birthday so we visited, but no rhythm nor reason to who is truly NEXT to have their order taken. It was a Saturday at 11:30am, and the place was packed full. We waited 30 minutes to be seated right off the bat. We left by 1:30, but I had to hail down the waiter 3 times for coffee refills during our long stay. No water was offered and when requested, it never made it to our table. The lady seating the guests was not a bit friendly or welcoming, nor was the waiter or the cashier. I would consider it true authentic Mexican food and not TexMex and obviously, the clientele really appreciates this place for that reason. It really was great food and I noticed the table served before us order a big bowl of menudo twice! It must have really been good. Would I return, probably not, unless it was around 1:30, but who wants breakfast at 1:30pm, when we left and there was plenty of seating an no wait time. I recommend it for those who want the good food and don't care about hospitality, ambiance or service. I didn't feel like leaving a tip (monetary), but did and only 10% and that was too much for really lousy customer service. So, you make the call. Good food at ok prices. Maybe a little high considering the food vs lack of ambiance and service. Don't be in any hurry if you go to JJ's because they sure aren't. read more
