The breakfast food I bought was great on October 28, 2023 after I dropped off my husband to the airport. I had a breakfast plate with fried rice, scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. The service is fast and great also bought a coffee made my own way which was great tasting. The ambience is chill in there and you can either take it to go or eat inside. You know what.. I would go here more often if it were closer to me. Reasonably priced food, good portions, yummy(!!!), and great parking options. And they're quick too. This is a no-frills, easy stop for some local kine plate lunch eats--but I think you should wake up a little early to get some breakfast here. I really enjoyed their homemade corned beef hash. Fried rice could be better but it was pretty good honestly and way better than some other random places that don't season enough. You know what I mean. Their bacon was cooked well and crispy too. And I LOVE the ube French toast here. Can't get enough. Maybe the best I've had around town. I love that it has some ube within it too, not just on top! Go check it out. Plenty of parking. We decided to eat here before flying back to LA. Location is close to the airport. You can probably walk if you're waiting for someone. We got Pork Adobo and Special Loco Moco. Egg is nice, a choice of either white or brown rice. You're able to dine in, or to go. They have 3 or 4 tables inside then 2 outside. They usually serve local workers around the area. I've heard pretty great things about Joe's grill from people who work in the area. It's a little sketchy. They are located in a little shopping area with many places boarded up or closed. There is plenty of parking though, so that's nice. I called ahead to place an order for pick up. There is like one table inside so I think it is pretty common for people to get take out. The woman on the phone was pleasant and it was easy to place my order. She even accommodated some interesting requests and spelled my name semi correctly on the boxes lol. I ordered a mini loco moco and the bf had a bacon cheese burger. The loco loco came with 1 hamburger patty, 2 eggs, rice, gravy and Mac salad and was $8.50. I didn't realize it came with mac salad, otherwise I would have asked to leave it out. Im not really a fan of Mac salad and always order "all rice" at zippys like a lunatic. The loco moco was good and the gravy tasted better than I've had in most other places. The bf enjoyed his burger and crispy fries. Why the -1 star you ask? Well I cannot not buy homemade Chex mix. It's like my kryptonite. Joe's grill sells little cakes and snacks near the register and I picked up a container of the peanut butter Chex mix because my interest is piqued. AMAZING! I first heard about this in a video from Mark Wiens and the hype is real. The ladies helping behind the counter were so nice and helpful. We had a big day ahead of us and between the 4 of us, we got some banana bread, mini loco moco, and special loco moco. This was our first time ever having loco moco and Joe's knocked it out of the parked. The gravy was so tasty, I could just pour it over rice and eat it like that. The beef was tender, not dry, and the egg on top was perfect. I love spam/egg/rice and this did not disappoint whatsoever. I highly recommend this dish/this establishment. I was feeling like having a burrito today for breakfast and to my surprise Joes had a burrito! As usual, they did not disappoint. The burrito was delicious. I had the breakfast burrito with bacon (you can choose your meat), hash brown and salsa. THIS IS MY MOST RECOMMENDED PLACE ON THE ISLAND!!! This place had the BEST meals I had on the entire island during my 5 day stay. I wish I had gone more. Especially after I went to many other places to be able to compare, I wish I would have just gone back here every day because their food was so delicious!! I tried the special loco moco, adobo omelette, ube french toast, and butter mochi. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD! The patty in the loco moco was packed with flavor, juicy, and the perfect thickness. The gravy was also a great consistency, had a good flavor and was salted to perfection. It just went well with everything and made the whole dish feel good and homey. I had the eggs over easy once and scrambled once and both times the eggs were cooked just right. I recommend getting the special loco moco for sure!! The adobo omelette was not what I expected. It has JUICY, TENDER perfectly cooked pork inside an omelette. The pork is marinated in this sweet and salty soy sauce. When you open it up and have a bite of the omelette egg with the pork ... you are instantly in heaven!! I have never tried anything like it and feel like they really should make a big deal of this dish!! But these people are so humble about their food and are so so nice! The ube french toast had swirls of ube baked into the bread on TOP of the ube sauce they pour over it so if you like ube then this is your spot to go to! They use real ube so it's not creamy or smooth. It's REAL ube so it has that natural texture to it - which I love!! The butter mochi was so good! The consistency was chewy like mochi but the shape was in a bread shape and the butter scent was so potent - they must use solely butter because it smells sooooo buttery!! It's not too sweet and I loved how all the tastes, textures, and smells came together. Definitely try taking a big whiff of this before you bite into it!! It enhances everything!!! Ok so what's the verdict?? GO TO JOE'S AND TRY IT ALL!! I only had a chance to try three dishes but they were ALL so good. GO TRADITIONAL!! The flavors, textures, and amount of love they put into their food is felt directly through the food. Nothing on their menu is "scary" for newcomers so try something new and you won't regret it!!! I've never tried a special that wasn't tasty. And you also can't go wrong with the Joe Moco (loco moco with corned beef rather than hamburger patty), pork adobo omelette, and anything with the chicken adobo and/or pancit. I also like their slutty brownies which I believe are similar to blondies with an oreo cookie inside. Same if you are a local and are in the Nimitz/Airport area. The specials are put up on the restaurant's Instagram page about 9:30am each day. While the regular menu items are good, the specials offer some of the best items I've had here. My go-to items: pork adobo with eggs and the Joe Moco. Over the weekend I had two of the specials: furikake ono and herb baked chicken. Both were sooooooo good! The fish was perfectly cooked and the chicken came with 3 large chicken thighs. Ever since I heard about Joe's grill express I've made it a routine to eat here every time I have a free morning. All of the breakfast meats are so good and rice is always on point. The staff is always so friendly over the phone and in person as well, I haven't eaten inside before I usually just do pick up, but the whole set up looks very inside so I'll definitely be eating it in next time! I usually get the Joe Moco (which has corn beef hash instead of a hamburger patty) a different style of Loco Moco. Or just one of the regular breakfast plates. Everything else I've tried has been excellent as well but those are just my favorites. When I order of the phone the server is always super nice and the food usually only takes about 10 minutes to be ready, even when it's busy I've never waited longer then 15 minutes. Small hidden gem in town that serves big portions for a reasonable price with a smile. They have cute drawn artwork and staff names up on the walls. You feel like family when you are here. The loco moco is one of my husbands favorites on island and there are swarms of locals and workers here depending on the time. All the food was good standard plate food. First stop after touching down in Oahu, my friend found this place on a Reddit food list. We got to place around 12pm not too busy, then the lunch rush began. The staff were friendly and welcoming answering any questions we had about the menu. They have a good mix of foods from various cultures and specialized in plate lunches. The group ordered their special loco moco unfortunately I'm not a fan of gravy so I decided otherwise and asked for other specials. The shoyu chicken is one of their best sellers and they just sold out of it, instead I got the go-to chicken katsu and spicy garlic chicken (furakake topped) and substituted the rice for all salad. Something familiar and something different. It's a small joint with not much standing room hence the express grab and go nature of it. So we took it too a local park to enjoy near the beach and it was definitely great welcome meal. The chicken "dishes" were both seasoned fairly but portions left me wanting a bit more and or maybe my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I decided to have breakfast before my first flight of the new year 2023. I located this fast food eatery that's pretty close to the Daniel K Inouye Honolulu international airport. It's great that they are open from 5:30am on most days of the week, so us travelers who fly in the morning can pick up breakfast outside the airport for a lower cost than in the airport, which can be higher depending on what you buy. With that said, I arrived here on the bus at about 6:30am on a Saturday morning. I missed the stop, so I managed to hit the McDonald's nearby first, picked up a drink, and headed towards Joe's Grill Express for the rest of my breakfast. It was interesting to walk in the semi industrial airport area early in the morning. Luckily it was only 0.25 mile in between them, so not too terrible with luggage. Joe's Grill Express is a small restaurant with two or so tables for patrons to eat and enjoy their food. I opted to grab takeout instead since I had a flight to catch. I looked at the menu prior to arrival and settled on the New York Steak breakfast plate. The prices here was reasonable, especially the steak plate at $11.50. While it could be cheaper, it definitely hit the spot and set the tone for the rest of the MLK Jr holiday weekend 2023. The best thing about my experience is that it only took 10 minutes from ordering and pick up. For best results, you can call ahead your order and it'll be ready for pick up. No need wait. The overall experience here at Joe's Grill Express was good, casual, homespun, and felt like it was a good place to be. The service here is friendly and fast. When I told them it was my first time there, they smiled and welcomed me in. It was pretty cool. They didn't ask how I liked the steak to be cooked but they asked about the eggs. I guess they like to chop the steak up rather than being in a large slab, which is okay and definitely good to eat. Only problem is that I forgot to ask them if they had any A1 steak sauce at the time. Everything else was perfect and fine. Consider coming to Joe's Grill Express for your next meal before or after flying in and out of Honolulu. I would say that they have a good and sizable menu for everyone's tastes. The restaurant itself is clean and different from what I've seen before but that's how it is sometimes. I ended up having my steak plate back at McDonald's, where I had a seat and had purchased a secondary drink with my meal. Joe's Grill Express already had individuals who were dining in and didn't want to be cramming in during my visit in January 2023. For the most part though, the experience here was uneventful and seemed like the place to go to pick up breakfast. Initially, I was being lazy and didn't want to walk from the McDonalds to Joe's Grill Express, but I had time to kill before my flight and ended up here anyway to check out a new local business. I was glad that I did come here. Nothing better than having a steak platter for breakfast. While the prices here are consistent with many breakfast places, you get a solid deal here while being close to the airport. And yes, you can literally walk to the airport terminal from here. I've done it on this past trip to Maui. Joe's Grill Express is located at 3131 N Nimitz Highway near the Daniel K Inouye international airport. It's about 0.5 mile to the airport terminal. They accept major credit cards, as a seasoned traveler, it's always cool. And cash as well. I would say that this place definitely is a good place to come to either before you fly or after you arrive. Or even a stop in between a road trip to anywhere on the island for the day or night. As far as parking goes, there are a good amount of parking spaces here. If you are like me, there's a bunch of bus routes that come to the N Nimitz area. I used Route 9 but 40 and 42 come here too. Check with TheBus for your perfect ride. There's always Uber and Lyft at your disposal as well. The steak plate was delicious and will definitely come here again whenever my travels have me fly in early on a Saturday (usually neighbor island) or right after work (usually mainland US). I had a group of guys, mostly from out of state, and some were not pork product eaters. So, I made it chicken katsu plates. Wow what a great experience! I tried something I have never heard of before called Embutido (meatloaf sausage) that was homemade, served with eggs and garlic rice. The sausage was very homey and tasted very light, and I would go back just for the garlic rice! The last time I was here was a few years back and that was for breakfast. The standard egg, rice, spam combo place back then. Now it's all takeout but still the great service and now an expanded menu. I really didn't know what I wanted for lunch but my hostess/cashier narrowed it down for me to a combo plate. I got the pork guisantes, chicken katsu combo. The plate was good. For the pork, I'm use to plenty of tomatoes sauce. This didn't have any and it was a flavorful change for me.
