This is my "go to" for my southern home cooking fix. The staff are always sweet and helpful, and the fried chicken delicious.

I don't know how we've been passing this place up all these years. Probably because it's so unassuming in Canton Road. We visited the other day and got just what we expected - a blast from the past with a buffet with Fried Chicken, Chicken livers, plenty of sides, salads and desserts. It's a no fuss atmosphere, friendly staff, stick to your ribs food and the place was packed on a random Tuesday afternoon. Thanks for lunch! read more

Not fresh at first, but decent if you push for it. I was pretty disappointed with how long the chicken and chicken livers had clearly been sitting out. When I arrived, I grabbed a piece of chicken and it was already cold, so I decided to wait for them to bring out a fresh batch. Same thing with the chicken livers: cold and not refreshed the entire time we were eating. Near the end of the meal, I finally asked if they were planning to put out fresh chicken. I explained that I tried it when I got there (about 30 minutes earlier) and it was cold, and nothing had been replaced. The staff member said she could start working on some, so I waited. About 12 to 15 minutes later, they did bring out fresh chicken and fresh chicken livers, and honestly, when it's fresh it's actually pretty good. The mashed potatoes were another issue. They had a thick, crusty layer on top, and it looked like they dumped the old, dried-out potatoes from the previous pan over the fresh batch. I had to scrape off the crusty topping just to get to the fresh potatoes underneath. Overall, the food itself isn't terrible. The bigger problem is the way it's being handled. It felt like they were more focused on cutting costs and stretching old food than keeping the buffet fresh and consistent. My advice: if something you want looks like it's been sitting out too long, say something early before you sit down. If you wait, you may never see fresh food brought out. read more

I go to the JohnBoy's on Canton Road. There are always healthy choices, great salad options, and the sweet tea is amazing! (I always get half sweet/half unsweet; just ask for "half-n-half" if you're cutting back sugar.) The wait staff treat everyone like regulars, and the kitchen staff keep the buffet full of delicious choices. The menu changes daily, so check the website if you're picky. Um, eh, oh lord, my mama always said if you can't say nothing nice, don't say anything at all. Guess what? I never listened to mama much but I did take her to Johnboy's ( a misnomer as it's like a Vietnamese family running the joint...no problem here as I love Vietnamese- but they really do not know Southern style American cooking), once settled in, my mom looked at me with disgusted look on her face as she held up a talon - literally a chicken claw attached into the funky crust of this odd "chicken" meat. In all honestly, I dunno what the good reviewers are smoking or drinking but homeboy John did t serve it up to me, or I may have forgotten how gross this trailer park buffet was. When Golden Corral is looking like a Michelin restaurant in comparison, you gotta wonder about the reviews. NEVER AGAIN. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. Despite it's humble setting & surroundings, Johnboy's is one of the best meat & 3/southern cooked food you will find in the area. No, it's not white tablecloth dining. Yes, it's a buffet, but the kitchen staff keeps everything freshened up with regularity. Our waitress was exceptionally friendly and didn't struggle one bit making sure that our party of 6 had everything we needed. If you like chicken livers, I highly recommend paying them a visit on Tuesdays. Their meat selections vary based on which day of the week it is, so if there's something in particular that you're craving, make sure it's served on the day you plan to go. read more

Well the last time I ate it John boys was about 5 years ago because I have a friend who owns a tattoo parlor in Canton Road and the food was outstanding the customer service is good the customer courtesy was good the prices were reasonable for the buffet but on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate John boys at 9. read more

Hadn't been here in years, so decided to give it a try since we were nearby. The positives are the fast, friendly service, cleanliness, and food variety from soup, salad, appetizers, entree selections, and desserts. The food was plentiful and fresh with a good deal of vegetable choices as well. However, JBs is more about quantity than quality. Though the fried chicken was good and not at all salty, the turkey and dressing had me asking, "Do I really want to eat this it's not wasted?" I decided not to force myself to eat the dressing as it was not at all good. My wife enjoyed the vegetables and salad bar which kept her satisfied. Desserts choices were plentiful including ice cream, cobbler, cake, cookies, and banana pudding. I chose ice cream and banana pudding I had been looking forward to try. It was a HUGE disappointment as it tasted nasty like no other banana pudding I've ever tasted. This one gave me no second thoughts on not eating it because it was so bad. Overall, worth trying if you prefer quantity over quality plus they are nice, efficient, and clean. But make your food selections wisely as I'm sure you'll find something to your liking. read more

First time visit and was pleasantly surprised but the selection of food. Had a 2 section salad bar with about anything you'd want incl chicken salad and tuna salad. All was very fresh. Had a variety of meats-I had chicken livers and fried chicken. Very tasty. Loads of veggies as well. My only complaint were the desserts. All 3 cakes were dry and crumbly. Johnboy's is everything you want and need a southern soul food, all you can eat restaurant. The wait staff were super friendly and the Hostess Mei was totally awesome how she took care of us. The restaurant was quite clean as well and not loud at all. It was nice to find a spot where my family could have great food and still hear each other. The fried chicken was super crispy and tender with the breading not overly salted. The baked chicken was super flavorful as well. The collard greens were tender and melt in your mouth good. The meatloaf was perfectly done and not too much filler. The fried rice was nicely cooked and not overly done. The Salisbury steak was also super tender. Really loved everything. I walked into Johnboy's Home Cooking and felt a little nostalgic. It reminded me of the cafeterias of yesterday. It was also packed with people, which we suspected when we found the parking lot full. We thought that was a good sign! We were seated quickly in a booth by the window. The waitress stopped by right away for our drink order and instructed us to head to the buffet line. It was filled with every home cooked vegetable you could imagine - the green beans and macaroni and cheese were my favorite! I found fried chicken and he tried the Salisbury steak, too. We both couldn't resist the hush puppies. The fried foods were bit overcooked - too crunchy and dried out. The salad bar boasted enough variety for us - I liked the tomato, jalapeño, cilantro medley over spinach. We passed on the dessert bar, but it looked good as well. All in all, we thought this was a good find. Our lunch was tasty -- albeit a smidge overcooked -- and super affordable. read more

Great! OMG, it's so fresh, local and laid back atmosphere if you like it simple and southern.

I have John Boys at two locations Marietta and Cartersville, they both good and I will have both again. I think Cartersville is better and bigger. Southern style home school served on a buffet, different menus on weekdays, daily specials are shown on their websites. read more

This place is awesome!!! I was hankering for some country fixings and always come back to John Boys. Such friendly staff and consistent good southern food. My aunt went to pick up lunch for us yesterday, a little early around 11:30 and they did not have the country fried steak out yet. My aunt asked and the kind waitress asked her how many she wanted and then proceeded to go in the back and fix two up fresh for us. How nice! Ordered yams, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and fried squash to go with it. Some of the best country buffet mac and cheese you can get. Yams were delicious and sweet and the potatoes and squash were on point! As always, the country fried steak with white gravy was delicious. Yes that's ketchup with it lol. We have gone to Johnboy's for a few years - never disappointed. There's enough variety each time that I have a tough time decided what to not eat! Very good selection of salads, fruit, veggies, meats each day and seafood days each week, dessert. I haven't had the soup offered each day, but it looks good. It's a small, welcoming restaurant, offers plenty of parking and nearly never a minute's wait to be seated and served. read more

I visited Johnboy's with fairly high hopes, given the solid reviews and the routinely crowded parking lot. While the price is excellent - a buffet for $9 - the food itself left a ton to be desired. Good: - The Fried chicken. It was fresh, meaty and super well seasoned. This comprised the majority of my meal. - Our server was top notch. Stopped by frequently and always made sure we had a full cup. Thank you! Bad: - I've never had Macaroni & Cheese that didn't taste like it had cheese. It was very bland; like chewing warm noodles. I would definitely suggest using a sharper cheese, because there just isn't any flavor. - The mashed potatoes tasted like they were from a box. Also bland without much flavor. - The rolls were overcooked and hard. - The cobbler had to be scraped from the pan ... and like everything else, was very bland without much flavor. All in all, I was shocked by how flavorless most of the food was. To be fair, my wife and I (~30) were the youngest people in the place by maybe 25-30 years minimum, and maybe we just have a different level of expectations. But if I was looking for a southern food, I would absolutely go to Fried Tomatoes off Barrett Parkway. Same price, more food, more flavor. read more

OMG if I could rate this little hidden gem, it give it a 4 thumbs up. When I tell you fresh hot and plentiful. The food was far more than what I expected. A old friend of mine wanted to share this place with me and I for one am making this my Go to spot from now on. It's almost un-rateable as it sits on a pedestal and class of its own! After a friend told me that she's seen former governor Sonny Perdue at John Boy's, I wanted to give this neighborhood restaurant a try. (It always looks busy!) I'm a New Yorker and not that discriminating when it comes to southern cuisine -- but I'm married to a southerner who has his opinions about the food he grew up with. Here goes: The salad bar has basic iceberg lettuce -- no field greens or romaine -- which I guess is indicative of the clientele: predominantly senior, caucasian and um.... not-fit. My husband and I both enjoyed the fried chicken, and we thought the sweet potatoes were delicious. I liked the mac and cheese -- crisp on the top and cheesy -- though T was somewhat disappointed. The biscuits were dry and hard but T liked the cornbread, which I thought was meh. He also gave the greens a thumbs up. I'm not a greens eater, so I can't comment-- but I did enjoy the sauteed cabbage (which may have been sauteed in something not that healthy.) I was excited to try the peach cobbler, which I actually read about in the AJC. I thought it was pretty good -- but my husband, who claims to love peach cobbler -- was indifferent. "Maybe you need a dollop of ice cream on top," I offered. He sneered. We also tasted the caramel cheesecake, which we liked. But then again, neither of us ever met a cheesecake we didn't like! I got a kick out of going to this restaurant and will likely return at some point. (Who eats like this regularly?!) This is a pretty interesting place. The demographic, which I had guessed would be mostly old white people, was surprisingly diverse in age and race for both servers and clientele. Perhaps that's a weird way to start, but for personal reasons it is important to me to see diversity in crowds. Sadly, though, the food is just okay. I enjoyed it, but my daughter, who eats almost any veggie, would not touch anything except the roll and a couple of bites of chicken off the bone. The service was not great either. The wait staff was not particularly kind, which makes me think they are either over-worked or under-paid, or perhaps a combo of the two. The price is set correctly, though. It's a decent buffet, considering what buffets are, and they're not over-charging for the food. Cheap prices and all you can eat home cooking, what more can you say! This place is always packed and so the food is always moving. I love just filling my plate with veggies (okra, cabbage, beans, peas, corn) and finishing off with the best sweet potatoes and hot peach cobbler.
