Purchased a Local Flavor voucher through Groupon and it was about to expire in 2 weeks so I got right on it to redeem. I've never been to a Johnny Carino's but I had heard of them and I had mentioned it to a friend of mine in San Antonio & she was familiar with the chain but didn't care for it. I was pleasantly surprised as the food was not as bad as I had expected it to be. The menu has a large variety of items. I asked our server if we could apply the voucher towards their special 2 for 49.99 menu and she said yes! With this special you get 1 appetizer (calamari or mozzarella sticks), 2 salads (house or caesar), choice of 3 entrees (cheese tortellini, spaghetti with meatballs, or chicken fettuccine alfredo), & dessert (chocolate cake, cheesecake, or tiramisu). In addition we ordered house cabernet (which was very good) and our server charged us the HH price of 5.00/glass! Our server Alejandra was very nice, efficient, and provided courteous service! Asking for a container of red pepper flakes, the pizza turned out to be solid, and a great introduction to the restaurant. Service was good. I was helped right away, with the restaurant being almost empty when I went. Johnny Carino's is located at Downey Landing, adjacent to Stewart and Grey Road. I was happy with my free pizza from Johnny Carino's. I didn't redeem my BOGO deal, as I didn't manage to swing by before expiration. I'm seldom in the Downey area, unless misfortune strikes and I have to head to Kaiser Permanente Hospital/Urgent Care, but I'd keep Johnny Carino's on the list of potential food suitors when hunger strikes. read more

Last time we been here at Johnny Carino was Summer 2023 their experience had been enjoyable, particularly with their pizza offerings. However, this time, we opted for the ribeye and lasagna special, which unfortunately did not meet our expectations. When I sampled the ribeye, I was disappointed to find that it was predominantly composed of fat rather than tender meat. The texture was unpalatable enough that I felt compelled to spit it out. This experience was further compounded by the nachos we ordered; they seemed hastily prepared with little attention to detail. Waiter was trying to do the best he could but the food was terrible. Ordered a steak Medium and it was the most burnt steak I've ever had. I was only able to take 2 bits before I just left it alone. Kitchens communication was off cause people at my table got served first and took them another 10 mins to give the rest of the people their food. Every time I have gone here, it takes a long time to get seated. Employees are walking by us but none of them will seat us. I think it's up to one employee but they don't have a designated hostess so that person never is around. You would think they want to get people seated immediately so they don't leave and lose the business but this restaurant in Downey is always understaffed. Add this to a menu change that removed past favorites and also completely changed the pasta sauce to a more acidic and less tasty version, and I've lost all reason to come. read more
