The food was decent but the staff unorganized. We had a party of 20-25 at lunch time after a funeral service. 3 waitstaff for our table. However when we ordered only about a third of the orders were put in right away and the rest of us were still waiting for our food while a few had got their food and were almost done before ours came out. The crackers were stale according to one person in our party. I didn't eat any of the crackers because I had noticed that some of them appeared to have been damaged (the plastic wrappers) looked like a mouse may have got into where they were being stored. read more

Hmm - not that many weeknight customers, but that is to be expected in a restaurant like this one. Overall, I'd say "good experience for an out-of-towner", but probably would say that the steak was the best part of the meal - they missed some opportunities along the way for sure! The front door to this place is magnificent. Wonderful iron door with cool old school cattle metal sculpture. As others have said, you walk into a nice domed foyer - it is a bit campy, but still - expected in a steak house. I was seated in the main dining room next to a huge beam - I guess because it was a table set for two (I was eating along as I am on a business trip). I suppose I could have sat somewhere else where I wouldn't feel a bit crowded - but I decided to roll with it. The dining room decoration is a bit cheesy - but it's ok for an "attraction" steak house. Now for the food... I ordered the Ribeye with a bleu cheese salad and a loaded twice-baked potato and (since it was Tuesday), a "James Bond" martini for ($4 on Tuesdays). My drink came in about 5 minutes. It was nice! Never had a James Bond martini before - not too bad... a bit stiff of an adult beverage for a weeknight. :) One minute later, the signature gimmick appetizer - the cottage cheese & chive spread. Probably would have come across much better had the bread been fresh or the crackers that are served with it were unwrapped and presented nicely. In any case, I did enjoy the cheese spread - it was a nice touch. Next (about 10 minutes later), my salad came out in a small dish with bleu cheese smothered on top. Wow. This was a good cold, crisp salad and the blue cheese was amazing. Seems you can only get dressing like this in a restaurant. And all too often do I find a midweek restaurant salad is not appetizing. This one was excellent. About 10 minutes after that, my steak came out - and it was a purdy thing! Yes, it was beautiful, flame-broiled, cooked perfectly, and rested perfectly. It was a sight! But... my potato looked like it had been either in a 500 degree oven for 3 hrs or just nuked. It was hot as a pistol and not very "loaded"... and quite small. I think the potato had a lot of room for improvement. The dish was garnished with what appeared to be two cold onion rings (from lunch?). If I may offer the tweaks that would have made this a perfect dinner? - The flatware, plates and water glasses literally look like they came from Denny's. If I'm going to eat great food, please can we do it with quality utensils? - Simple food details make a big difference! Fresh, warm bread (not old, stale bread). Butter that isn't individually wrapped. Crackers that didn't come from Sysco. Larger potatoes from Idaho. Twice-baked should have more ingredients. Onion rings that are battered and fried just before serving, not leftover from lunch. The signature cottage cheese spread... how do you spread your dips? Is it with a chowder spoon? I would suggest a small butter knife at the very least. Well, for a tourist trap - it was certainly a good meal. For locals, I'm certain they demand better. Overall? 3 stars. DON"T DO IT!! We were roadtripping through Omaha and decided to find a nice steakhouse to eat at during our one night stay. You can't drive through Omaha without getting a steak, right? So, I searched all of the steakhouses on Yelp and after reading tons of mixed reviews and taking our travel budget into consideration, we chose Johnny's Cafe. HUGE MISTAKE! First off, I felt like I was in my grandmother's house... It was weird, dingy and musty. And it was completely empty! There were two ladys at one table and a 75+ year old couple at another. That should have been our first warning, but we continued to our table. We ordered the French Onion soup, which was absolutely delicious! But that turned out to be the only good thing there. The cottage cheese spread was gross and the salads were drenched in not-so-delicious dressing. We figured that maybe it wasn't a bad thing that their salads weren't so good afterall, this was a steakhouse not a saladhouse. Once our steaks arrived the first thing that I noticed was the melted cheese on the baked potatoes that looked like it had melted earlier that day then was thrown in the microwave to nuke. They were gnarly looking. At this point we were feeling a little nervous about how good this food was going to be, but again, we continued on. My wife took a bite of her steak and I could immediately tell she was not happy with it. It tasted like the cook had just finished cooking a giant, stinky piece of fish, took it off the grill and placed the filet right in the same spot. AND it was incredibly dry! Absolutely disgusting! My strip was extremely chewy and dry as well. As a result, when our server came around to ask how everything was, we asked for the check and got the hell out of there! We believed all the other reviews about how good this place was and let me tell you did we regret it. So, if you are even considering going there, don't do it! Outstanding. This place has made my life complete. If I could dine here everyday, I would. The throwback motif, the stout cocktails, the incredible beef. Woohee this place is where it's at. Had reservations for 6 people on a Saturday, while we waited for our table we cozied up to the bar, and waited for some 'Goodfellas' to pick up our drinks....not really but seriously could have fooled me. The chairs and decor of the bar made me realize how awesome of place this was going to be. I had the petite filet medium rare and hashbrowns, I will DREAM of this steak it was soooooo good. The Bourbon Manhattan for $5.50 was incredible, and I can speak for eveyone at the table, that this place is a gem. Our silence while we savored every bite of the beefy goodness on our plates, was deafening. Especially since this was a group of seasoned Bachelorettes. This is the steakhouse that ruined steak for me forever. We were on a cross-country road trip from LA to Boston, and we had to stop for steak in Omaha. Once you've tasted Omaha grain-fed Hereford Prime steak, there's not many places left to go. Longhorn Steakhouse? Texas Roadhouse? All purveyors of tasteless rubber. I just order chicken fried steak, because nothing else they offer can satisfy me. I've even tried ordering from Omaha Steaks, and it doesn't even come close. Okay, rant over. This was hands down the best ribeye (let's face it, best MEAT) I have tasted, ever. I love how they use a minimal marinade of olive oil, salt and pepper to let the flavor of the seared meat just come out. I found myself cutting my last pieces of steak smaller and smaller because I just didn't want to run out of it. You really should eat at this establishment. It's kind of touristy, and it's got some of the cheesiest decorations you've ever seen, with cow leather, saddles and stirrups everywhere. A real experience. One of Omahas classic steakhouses. Don't come for the modern vibe or gluten free menu, it's all about steaks here. Ribeyes, filets, prime ribs are all very good, as are the house salads. Potato sides are fairly standard, but the best part may be the secret recipe cottage cheese spread. I always buy a quart to take home every time I dine at Johnny's. Prices are fair, drink and wine menu is better than you may think when you walk in, and service is usually pretty good. Every once in a while you get a new waitress, but the slip ups are rare. It's sad, but there is usually not much of a wait to get a table, that's why I'm a frequent guest. If you've never been to Johnnys, make plans now! I'm worried it won't be around forever, and we won't be able to replace this institution when it's gone. read more

We regularly eat in the bar area with our young family and they make it a wonderful experience. Cottage cheese spread is great and we often stop in just for a burger. Absolutely revolting. I've been here five times in as many years. Today was the last. A typical meal at Johnny's will be cold or room temperature at best. The "hot" beef sandwich I ordered looked like something that could have been served during the Great Depression: dry, shriveled slices of what was purported to be beef, entangled in sinewy mess of fat and food service brown gravy slapped onto a piece of stale white bread. A dollop of cold mashed potatoes swam pathetically off to the side. Served along with this catastrophe was a dish of pasta salad which contained enough vinegar to strip paint. The restaurant attempts to remind us of a time when real stockyard workers did real stockyard work with real livestock. The walls are adorned with aww-shuckery baubles and old photographs of bygone days. Johnny's effortlessly pushes us to our limit of tawdry midwest octogenarian kitsch. This place is from 1922, after all. For some, this is an institution. Other reviewers have called it a classic. My contribution is to say that a visit to Johnny's is an unforgettable experience, if not unforgivable. read more

The staff service was okay, our server seemed under the weather possibly which could have attributed to her mood. However we did notice she had more of a peppy and delightful mood serving another table. It was my 10 year anniversary and trusted reviews that the place was good but yeah... we're not convinced to return. The steaks were good, but honestly King Kong serves larger steaks for less the price. Then we also had the cowboy hash which was truly disgusting to even look at. Look, I'm not stupid. It's the Big Man's wife. I'm gonna sit across from her, chew my food with my mouth closed, laugh at her f****ing jokes, and that's it. The moment I stepped in, I thought I was in a Quentin Tarantino movie. The carvings in the main door, the red leather swivel chairs with wheels and the fantastic 70's classic rock music in the background are just the icing on the cake. The hostess was very pleasent and showed us around the restaurant, including he room where About Schmidt was filmed. They also have a wall with their menus from 1922 till today. Apparently, a T-bone would have set you back a buck fifty back in the 50's!!! Having said that, the food was excellent. First time going here for my wife's birthday. I get the place is very old, but I just wasn't feeling the inside. Was missing something and seemed very outdated. Maybe nice relaxing music? Not sure, but didn't like it. We got a group-on for $80. Make sure you read the fine print and don't order any specials! Our waitress told us after I presented it to her to pay our bill. So she kind of helped us, but we ended up losing $10 extra with how she charged us. That made us pretty upset. Salads were the ones you buy at the store in a bag. That confirmed a 3 star for me. Our bill was huge and last thing I want, is a bag of salad they bought at the grocery store for $3.00 that serves 4 people and they charged me pretty high. The steak however, was great! Full of flavor, didn't need any sauce, and was cooked perfect. My wife is pretty picky with her steak and she loved hers as well. The interior seemed stuck in the 1970s and smelled like if the carpet hasn't been washed since. I don't think I have ever seen a Formica table in a steak house, much less with no table cloth. Had a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer which was next to impossible to eat without using pliers to rip them from the metal harness that encased them. Order a filet medium, that came medium well and was average at best, which is not what I expect at a steak house. The bread at the table was probably used for a hockey game earlier that day. If I were reviewing Johnny's Cafe as a restaurant, it would get three stars - maybe 2. I went there for lunch, and had braised oxtails, which came in a slick, thickened, tomatoey sauce with boiled potatoes that were just slightly hard, and a salad that was old-fashioned. But that all sounds harsh, and it's not fair to be harsh to a place that delivers the exact experience I can recall from my days as a child in the 60s. Updating this place would be like colorizing a film. It's better if you accept it for what it is rather than expecting something it isn't. If the sauce were a wonderful reduction of pan juices with cabernet, it wouldn't be Johnny's. The food might be more to my current tastes, but it would not be authentic. I was in Omaha for a thing, and was pointed to Johnny's Cafe by a family member. I was looking for a good steak that I didn't have to get dressed up to eat. Upon entering through the huge front inner door, I briefly wondered about my attire, but was soon put at ease by another couple of non-dressy folks. This place looks far more expensive than it is. Johnny's has also been open for longer than any other steakhouse in Omaha--since the 1920s, I believe. That kind of longevity speaks to quality in some way. I ordered a ribeye, rare (I still wonder why any other option is even available), and enjoyed my Coke while eagerly awaiting its arrival. This reviewer does not eat salads and the like, and is finicky about even bread. Brought to me, was a bowl of cottage cheese dip, which they speak highly of, and a bowl of assorted crackers. I did not indulge, but it is worth mentioning that it does exist. My lack of consuming it has more to do with who I am than what it was. I was also presented with a roll, which was wonderful. I like that real butter packets were in a little dish on my table. Fake butter is an affront to humanity, and I hate having to ask about it, or worse, being given the fake stuff under false pretenses. Note to all restauranteurs--I CAN tell the difference. My steak arrived soon after. Service here was quick! Upon removing the wooden stick that proudly proclaimed "RARE," I cut in, and was rewarded with a nice, deep red color. The steak was not the best I have had, but was a fine meal regardless. When in Omaha, I may well make this a regular stop. My baked potato was absolutely adequate, but of note was the giant pile of bacon that was brought out with it. I like my potato with butter and bacon, and occasionally chives, and generally potatoes are either butter only or loaded. I ordered bacon for my potato, and was very much rewarded! In summary, Johnny's is a fancy-looking, but unpretentious steakhouse. You will get very good food at a very reasonable price. In fact, I believe I escaped at a price I would more expect to see at a chain restaurant, but having had a much better meal. Would I recommend? Yes, and enthusiastically so. Will I return? After trying Johnny's last night, I am seriously baffled over how anyone can give this restaurant high marks without embellishing. For starters, the restaurant is dark (not romantic dark but creepy dark) and dingy "looking" which in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing. However, both combined gave the impression of uncleanliness and I found myself overly inspecting everything to ensure the darkness wasn't a cover-up for filth or worse. I get it! Johnny is a piece of Omaha history which I'm all for preserving, but is sprucing up the place too much to ask? I can only imagine how the kitchen and prep area looks. Is it just as old and outdated? Needless to say, I couldn't relax the entire night. The menu offers a nice selection of appetizers, salads, seafood, cocktails, and steaks. The problem is the taste! I ordered a Berry Kiss martini that was void of ANY flavor. The crab cakes were a piping hot mess! The salad was a bowl of lettuce with one......yes one tomatoe and one banana pepper. The stuffed mushrooms were odd tasting to me but decent enough for my wife to enjoy. The steaks were very well prepared but offered no wow factor. The entire experience was underwhelming. There were several highlights to include the hostess, waitress, and french fries! I was kind of conflicted after leaving here. I wasn't sure if it was good or not. Everything was ok... But just a little off. This was the first time I had ever been there. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I didn't have a steak. A steak would make or break my opinion of this place. The appetizer we got was pretty good. It was krab stuffed mushrooms. The havarti cheese is what made it tasty. For the entree I ordered the Sweet Breads. Having never tried them before I was really excited. I'm not sure if it is the way they are supposed to taste or if it was the seasoning on them, but they just kind of tasted funny. My girlfirend had the catfish and it tasted really fishy (muddier than usual) and had the same funny tasting seasoning on it. The chocolate crisp for dessert was alright but just a little stiff. Other than that I would rate it as average. It might have just been our choices, but it didn't seem too out of the ordinary. I love Johnny's Cafe because this restaurant represents history of cattlemen in Omaha, capital of highest quality corn fed beef in America. Johnny's Cafe is located in the historic Omaha Stockyard and operated by the same family continuously from 1920s. Cattlemen would have gathered here for a meal and for drinks after his livestock sale. (Beef,pork and sheep was sold from the stockyard) I have been to Johnny's Cafe more than a dozen times and my favorite is their braised beef short ribs with a side of Johnny's salad. Beef is slowly cooked and melts in your mouth. Make sure to ask for the barbeque sauce on the side if you order the short ribs. read more

I hadn't been to Johnny's in probably 25 years. Last week, we celebrated my mom's b-day here. To understand the decor of this establishment, you have to understand the history of not only the restaurant, but also the neighborhood and Omaha. The stockades saw hundreds of thousands of cattle go through it over the decades and while time has changed the area, it's not really changed Johnny's. This also means it's off the beaten path now. I was kind of sad to see how few people were there on a Friday night, somehow they have to find a way to drive more traffic and establish a base with all the new people in Omaha, as many of their old customers are just that, old or have passed on. We had pretty good service, great food and a great time rehashing our lives and celebrating my mom's b-day. If you're swing through Omaha or been there all your life and never been, give it try! read more

After first moving to Omaha, this was one of the first places that we went to in search of a "classic" Omaha steak house. Overall, it's a pretty good place to eat, but wouldn't land on my pantheon of places to get a steak. So as far as locations go, this is kind of off the beaten path and you may have to turn as though you were getting back on the freeway to get here. It's not hard to figure out, but I know that I had a moment where I thought that I was going the wrong way. As others have suggested, the atmosphere is "old school," which is either dated or authentic depending on your view of things. I found it charming. You enter through heavy metal doors (that would probably withstand a bomb-blast) and enter into a place that probably hasn't been updated since Sinatra was touring. In the menu, they mention that they filmed part of "About Schmidt" here. I haven't seen that movie in years, but I'm betting part of the reason they used it as a location is Johnny's "timeless" (or "out-of-step") quality. Either way you look at it, it's hard to say that it isn't memorable and probably in keeping with the East and West Coast's stereotypical view of Omaha and the Mid-west. Every time that I have been there, the servers have been very attentive, but the place has never been very crowded (calling it empty would be be fairly appropriate). They inquire on you frequently and offer menu suggestions. I kind of felt like my mom (well, someone's mom) was waiting on me. Again, I found it charming. As far as the food goes, every table get the house-made cream cheese and chive spread with bread, which is tasty, but not outstanding. I have gotten the french onion soup on multiple occasions and would highly recommend it. I have tried several of their steaks. For me, I tend to compare steakhouses based on the filets. Johnny's filets are cooked to the level that you order and they are flavorful and tender. However, they lack the aged and butter quality that I have found at my favorite steakhouses. The prices aren't bad and a night out here won't break your budget like some of the best places that I have been to. Still, a meal for two tends to set me back over $60 (including drinks). I felt that the price was about right. So to sum it up, I go to Johnny's because the food is good and also because I like the atmosphere - it's what I thought Omaha was (before living here for a while) and not what Omaha actually is today. read more

Always love to visit the old traditional Omaha Steakhouses. However, Johnny's best days are behind them. Went on a Friday night. Had the Chicken Fried Steak. It tasted like dishwater. The bread pudding was rubbery and looked horrific. The service was slow. The salad was wilted. Very disappointing. Never be back. The restaurant has a distinct sewer, moldy smell. I went to Johnny's Cafe on 2 December with my Parents who came into town for Thanksgiving. They wanted to get a good steak and being new to town my-self my wife and I decided to try Johnny's Cafe after reading the website about how the restaurant was founded and is one of the original steak houses of Omaha. The first thing that we noticed about the restaurant is that the decor looked as if it hadn't been updated since the last remodel in the 70's, and that the carpet could probably use a steam cleaning or replacement. This didn't deter us since we usually eat at hole in the wall Asian restaurants anyways. Both couples ordered the dinner for two options. For appetizers we ordered cheesy garlic bread and the onion rings. The onion rings were good and the portion was generous and the waiter informed us that they just reduced the size in half, the cheesy garlic bread was standard Texas toast with mozzarella melted on top. The salads came out next, none of us were impressed the salad consisted of what seemed liked premixed ice-berg salad available from the grocery store. Than came the entrees, all of the steaks were delicious by far the best part of the meal and since this is the star attraction that we came for it lived up to our expectations. The sides were OK, nothing special, I had the mashed potatoes and i was disappointed they tasted like instant potatoes scooped with an ice cream scooper similar to a school lunch room. By the time desserts came we where full and got to-go boxes, overall the meal was good but for what I thought was going to be a quality steak house it left a lot to be desired. As usual, Johnny's was phenomenal and our waitress Rose was on her toes!! (No rhyme intended). Rose was a complete gem and kept our water glasses filled as well as checking up on us from time to time without being over zealous like some wait staff are. Our filet and prime rib meals came and were served perfect just like we ordered them. We had a half order of onion rings as well as complimentary liver pate' and the normal sassed up cottage cheese spread they give you with a basket of bread. I can't say enough great things about this grand old restaurant. Sally greeted us at the hostess podium and immediately sat us with her usual charm. Can get just about any cut of steak depending on your budget and appetite. I got a T-bone (med-rare) while the others ordered pork chops. All our main dished were cooked to perfection and were very flavorful. All came with a house salad and a choice of potato all of which were just ok. Rolls with a cottage cheese spread were included with the meal, I'm not a fan of cottage cheese so i can't really comment on how good it is or not. My absolute favorite steak house in Omaha, and in a cowtown like this, that's saying something. It's been there for nearly 100 years, located conveniently near the old stockyards. The rib-eye steaks are always tender, juicy, and can be cut with a fork. I always get the gigantic hand-breaded onion rings on the side along with the au gratin potatoes. It's got a lot of old-school charm that makes for a perfect night out without being too pretentious (or breaking the bank). It holds its own with Caniglia's Venice Inn, Gorat's, or Piccolo's, and is my favorite of the bunch. read more
