Decided to dine here for my 20th Birthday with my family. We easily got our reservation in a few days ahead and didn't have any issues getting our seats once we arrived. While it may not look like a whole lot from the outside, the inside is that of an older, classic restaurant. Dark reds, woods, and a uniformed staff. Everything is as it was back in the 1970's, back when their latest remodel was... including the feeble silverware and upholstery. The small wooden-handled steak knives were dull and made it very difficult to eat. I ordered the 11oz Prime Rib, cooked medium, with mashed potatoes. Very disappointed in our meals. The picture is what my daughter got when she ordered the 1/2 pound of crab legs. Why are they cut in half and where is the rest? The entrance had a very strange odor. My prime rib sandwich was mediocre at best and the krab mushrooms tasted like tarter sauce. There was mold on the cherry tomato in one of our salads. Very expensive and not good. read more

Positive notes : unique atmosphere, great coffee, good service, friendly and helpful staff, and I liked the buffalo wings. Downsides: the rest of the food isn't that good. We had vegetable beef soup and the beef was very dry, the soup was greasy. We had the luncheon steak and fries. The meat was and the sauce were okay but the fries tasted mediocre. We also order the California salad. It was so drenched in dressing that when I pressed my fork into it, dressing oozed up between the points of the fork. I sent it back and got one with dressing on the side. It was okay but nothing exciting. Definitely not a restaurant I would recommend for good food read more

Stepping into Johnny's was like stepping back in time to 1963 into a hunting lodge for rich weirdos. Yes, that's a quote from RHPS, and I mean that in the nicest way! In addition to the ambiance, we totally enjoyed ourselves. My husband and I were treated to dinner by my sister and her husband when they came to visit us here in Omaha. We had a great time, the wine flowed, the meat was perfect, couldn't ask for anything more, except... 4 stars because the sides were simply 'meh', nothing to write home about. And for that price tag, I expected more than just a good steak, I expected to also be wowed by everything else. I have never left a Yelp review but can't let this one go. Service was good & very friendly. The food tasted awful! I ordered filet which tasted odd; maybe even spoiled. My son ordered catfish which tasted spoiled too. My husband said his chicken fried steak tasted sour. All around terrible. If you want to take a step back in time while enjoying Omaha's history, this is a great place to go! Once you open their huge stockyard themed doors you feel like you are transported back in the past. It's as if you traveled back to the 60s with the décor. This place can be a little confusing to get to (especially if you are coming from the south- no you are not just getting back on the interstate) so if you are having problems, make sure you follow your GPS. I come here with work frequently and I also used to come with my parents when I was younger. This is a place I come because of the nostalgic factor, and not necessarily because of the food. I have tried a few different meals and everything has been OK, but nothing has every wowed me. The waitresses have always been very helpful and inviting. I think I will try a few more meals in the future to see if I can have that aha! moment. read more

What a great example of what steakhouses used to be like in Omaha! I've been here twice now and loved it both times! We started off with a great martini in the ultra vintage, incredibly big bar. They give you adequate time to get settled with your drink, which I appreciated, before you are seated. This trip we had an offer they presented which was dinner for two for $65. Great deal I thought! It started with an appetizer course, followed with salad or soup course, next the entree and finished with a dessert to split. We had the spinach artichoke dip and it was very good plus a great serving size. Decent iceberg lettuce salad complete with pungent bleu cheese and anchovies.(At my request) For my main course I had the juicy ribeye, which was cooked perfectly at medium rare. Dessert was bread pudding and I was stuffed by this point, nonetheless it was great. If you like nostalgia and great food, this is the place for you. Ultimately it's too bad that this is one of the last remaining original steakhouses in town, but I will continue to support this place and I hope they stick around forever! read more

I REALLY want to give this place a better rating, but I can't. I haven't been here in over 25 years... Back in the days of the stockyards, this place was hopping and had amazing food. My dad was a cattle buyer and I would meet him here for lunch. But now it's a much lesser crowd and the food is below average for a fairly expensive steakhouse. My husband had the petite filet and baked potato. It was cooked perfectly, pink in the middle, but he said there was no flavor. I had the skinniest King Crab legs I've ever seen. I think they gave me extra, probably cuz they felt bad, but they were overcooked and so skinny I couldn't get the meat out without smashing it.... impossible to then dip in butter after that. It was the hardest work I've done to get crab meat out of shell when I didn't even have to crack them.... They're already cut open!!!! No way those legs came from a King Crab!!! We both had undercooked, semi-warm baked potatoes. The butter I put on mine didn't even melt. I had to warm the butter pads in my hand first... We won't be back. That was the worst $75 meal we've had in a long time. read more

An Omaha classic that stands the test of time; from the old school of family owned steak houses. I had the Omaha strip and my daughter had the prime rib; perfect meat that was expertly cooked. I always get the hash browns as they are browned just right. The interior is the same from the big remodel in the 70s. The front doors are an Omaha icon; heavy metal with steers as the handles. And, of course, Creighton Prep alum Alexander Payne filmed a scene from "About Schmidt" in the dining room. Payne has the eye for detail. The right choice. There was a big birthday party for an 83 year old woman the night we were there. Rowdy. The average age of the crowd that night was at least 65. Younger people need to figure out this is a great Omaha institution and patronize this place. No arugula. Real and authentic Nebraska food. read more

This above average, not best, steak was accompanied by boring cottage cheese with packaged Keibler crackers and regular bland white bread roll. Service was less than average. This place is an enormous palace of 1970s and earlier awesomeness. Wonderful environment, definitely a step back in time. The food is really good, I love the small old school Italian touches like the cottage cheese before you eat. Good rolls too. I had the ribeye and can't think of a single complaint. Such a disappointment. We just moved to town after being gone for 38 years. My wife and I were very excited to go to dinner on new Years Eve to Johnny's since we had not been there for about 40 years. We were so disappointed. Ambiance was lacking. This is supposed to be an upscale steakhouse. The tables were formica that we used to see in the 1960s. The place mats were just paper. Our nice wait person took our order. She then brought each of us a roll and a package of 2 crackers - no butter. Salads arrived and were good although they consisted of just lettuce and a very small piece of tomato. I ordered the strip that was described on the menu as the owners favorite. What a joke. It was a plain piece of meat that had zero seasoning and no grill flavor. My wife ordered the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes. Her hamburger steak seem to have been some sort of meat that was tenderized but no hamburger meat was present. She ate a few bites and did not continue eating it. And to top it off - the mashed potatoes were instant!!!! We couldn't believe it. What happened to this icon restaurant that has been in business for over 100 years? This place needs some serious updating, some serious improvement in food quality and some serious improvement in food preparation. We both agreed that Texas Roadhouse or Outback would have been far better. read more

The one and only time I have gone here was with one of the Kawa's family members nearly ten years ago. This place is known for its steaks, and it certainly should be, as it has absolutely no vegetarian option (not even a measly dinner salad). If you are a vegetarian, do not go here... just don't waste your time...PERIOD. A quick glance at their menu reveals that they still do not have even one vegetarian option. Most places these days at least offer a vegetarian salad, and I certainly don't mind going out with friends to steak houses since most of them have at least a salad with no meat on it. This one does not. So, unless you enjoy making a meal out of dinner rolls, or if you wish to pay $10 for a stripped down salad, have your friends choose another place if they want steaks. read more

You walk into the place and you're greeted by a real old school atrium after you open the "door". The server stuck me in the corner.. what else is new lol.. requested another seat. The server was helpful letting me have a taste of the wine before ordering. Lots of nice steak choices.. I ordered the rib eye which is the chefs choice on the menu. It was AVERAGE. The bourbon mushroom sauce made the difference, unfortunately. My thought is that the food can be a lot better then it is, but the people who come here aren't going to pay much more money for the food here. I hear people complaining about the taxes in Omaha and the difficulties of the city which has a domino effect in the restaurant industry. Johnnys can't charge more money for better quality food... You get a plain round roll and told that the cottage cheese spread is a nice companion to the lance crackers. The rib eye steak was average and on the fatty side. It does have a nice family steakhouse feel to it... I guess I'm used to east coast steak houses like the grand ones in and around the NYC metro area... still I think they can do a much better job here. The last time I was in Omaha I went to an immaculate steak place.. This place has more history and can beat the pants off of any place if they tried harder.. 3 stars. You walk into Johnnys Cafe after driving down the desolate road and the mood is immediately set. There is a classic, rich feel to the place with dark red and mahogany furniture, the bar to the right of the rotunda and the main dining area to the left. Chatting with the bar tender, we got to hear the evolution of the restaurant, and the full story told on the back of the menu. We were pretty quickly moved into the main dining area, which had a similar feel to the bar, with a beautiful back lit glass mural wall that was so unique and so beautiful I was sold on this place before I even looked at the food offerings. Then the menu had this incredible deal of $69 dinner for 2, including app, soup or salad for each, an entree for each(included all the best cuts of steak as options.. who orders the chicken?!), and a dessert. Out of all of the places we are in Omaha, this was one of the best deals and felt more authentic than other steakhouse experiences. While sitting in this historic steakhouse, it felt that we had finally found the city charm, rich with history and that delicious Omaha steak you want to find when you visit this city! read more

I was very disappointed. When they say "Original Steakhouse" , pretty sure everything in there is original. Silverware must be 30 years old. My ribeye was tough & only medium rare in the very middle, I got a bite of mold on the steak & I was done. Portion sizes are huge & they don't have small options available. The side salad was iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots & half of a cherry tomato. The waitress pushed the "Johnny's cheese spread & salad dressing" neither was very good. The cheese spread is pureed cottage cheese with chives. I like cottage cheese, but not on a dinner roll. The dressing was basically oil & vinegar. Our waitress was abrupt & plunked dishes down on the table. I'm not sure if they have a wine list other than the wines by the glass, we weren't offered one. My family really enjoys this place, so I decided to give it a try tonight. Upon entering, it reminded me of my great-grandmother's basement-musty and dark. However, it does have a very nice historical background, and I do enjoy the dark and quiet atmosphere. Once seated, I observed how few tables were filled. Of course, the service was good. The food was enjoyable and tasty, but nothing that blew me away. If it weren't for the historical legacy of this place, I'd probably be eating it three stars at the highest, but I felt obligated to give it a little more. A classic old school steakhouse that opened in 1922 making it one of Omaha's oldest operating restaurants. We made reservations on a Saturday night and we're seated promptly. Service was very good and everything was efficient but did not seem rushed the perfect balance! Also never had to ask for refills on drinks, which was nice. For the main course I tried the surf and turf, which was excellent that came with your choice of a soup/salad. I went with the soup which was alright was probably my least favorite part of the meal, if I had to be critical. Everything else was excellent and very good! I would come here again on occasion and would recommend if you are looking for an old school themed steakhouse with great food if your looking for smoothing more modern I would suggest elsewhere! read more

Coming back to Johnny's brought back great memories of over 40 years ago. The steaks are still fantastic and service is phenomenal.

Haven't eaten here in a few years but came last night with a friend. Prime rib had great flavor but was closer to medium or medium well then they medium rare that I ordered. Salad with Johnny's original dressing still fantastic and the homemade rolls are terrific. Waitress was fantastic. It was definitely nostalgic coming back to one of Omaha's few original steak houses. Its long-standing South Omaha and Stockyard history sets Johnny's apart from any Restaurant in Omaha. I will be back soon and I urge everyone to support and enjoy this great Omaha Jewel so that it doesn't go the way of so many long-standing family steak houses in town. read more
