Not the Johnny's I remember from years ago. Staff was attentive and the decor was as beautiful as I remembered. The food was sub par. Luncheon steaks were not flavorful nor were they tender. The special of braised ox tails was disappointing. Very fatty and a boiled potato for the side. The salads were only arugula. Not a fan of these greens. You know, there's quite a bit of value in nostalgia, and Johnny's dishes it up with pizzazz. Some might think of it merely as inertia, as the place doesn't look like the decor or the menu has been updated since maybe the late 70s (except the prices!). And they look like deer in the headlights when gluten-free is mentioned. But it's sort of nice to take a couple of hours and enjoy a time when the world seemed more sane. The steaks, as always, are wonderful. And of course, it wouldn't be a Midwest steakhouse without baked potatoes and simple side salads. The service isn't elegant, but the servers are efficient. Saying "steakhouse" makes it sound dressy and perhaps upscale, but Johnny's isn't either. Come in a suit and tie, or wear blue jeans and a nice tshirt--either way you'll fit in. I wanted to give this 3 1/2 stars, but that's not an option. The staff was very friendly. The ambiance left a lot to be desired. I'd read the place was full of dark wood, red leather, etc. I also read it was dimly lit... so I had a picture in my mind what to expect. Reality did not meet my expectations. The ambient light (that's an understatement) from the ceiling light fixtures was like those spotlights they use outside to draw attention to a new store opening or some other 'big' event. I needed sunglasses inside the restaurant. There was a group of eight of us. We didn't order any appetizers. I ordered the Native Filet Mignon, medium rare. It came with a salad and choice of side. Menu side options are potato related. Someone declined the potato and was offered a vegetable side. I immediately changed my order to have the broccoli/cauliflower side. It's not on the menu, so don't be afraid to ask. Salads came out first. Iceberg. Everyone got the option of having an anchovy. I thought yes please... a little flavor... with dressing on the side. The salad was fine; no real complaints. The dressing on the side was served in a gravy boat! Freaking hilarious! Had a person poured all that dressing onto the salad, they would have had salad soup. Next the steak and the veggies. Delivery of the food to the table was slow. REAL slow. Quite literally one person's food (well, SOME of their food) at a time. I suppose that might explain why my veggies were stone cold. They were nicely cooked. They most likely came out of a big, frozen bag, but they were steamed, not soaking in butter or any topping, or for that matter any seasoning. Had they been hot, I would have been pleased. And now the star of the show... the steak. The steak is the reason for the three-star review. If I had issues with the steak, we'd be looking at a two-star review or less. As stated before, I have the Native Filet Mignon, medium rare. In hindsight, the petite filet would have been plenty. The meat was cooked perfectly and was the perfect temperature. I was able to take my time and eat the entire, beautiful piece of meat with no issue. The last bite was as good as the first. Have I had better steak? Yes, but this steak was very, very good. This steak made the entire visit worthwhile. I think everyone should make at least one trip to Johnny's Cafe. Even if I lived in Omaha, I think one trip would do it for me. read more

I am a sucker for old school restaurants and let me just say, I've been here before but I was a kid and Yelp wasn't around. This place hasn't changed much which I love. But, don't expect some of the modern over-priced steak house trappings though (e.g. insane portions of sides, tons of steak toppings, 3-4 servers waiting on you at all times etc.). Great steak. Found this gem while passing thru on a road trip. Fantastic, unique, additional complimentary touches with each course. Cottage cheese w/ chives served with the bread. Delicious house vinegarette for the salad(purchased a bottle of the dressing) A side of brown mushroom & wine gravy served with the steak. Hashbrowns was one of the potato options that were yummy. Johnny's is counting on its legacy standing in town, and its aging fan base. That seems to be enough, based upon the good crowd there on a recent Saturday night. But I don't think that "Omaha's original steakhouse" will be able to stay afloat once its loyal clientele ages out. The food is shamefully outdated, the menu selection sparse, the wine options abyssmal. I had some hopes as I arrived and saw the beautifully ornate doors at the entrance, but the side-room where I was seated was dark and felt somewhat dingy. Go here to "check the box", but I'm betting it's your only visit. read more

Johnny's Cafe is a part of Omaha's history having been around since 1922. It is one of the few remaining big-name steakhouses of the past. Walking into here is like walking into a time capsule with it's neat retro lounge-style setting. Service is very friendly as well as speedy; probably got my main course in less than 20 minutes. The steak itself is very flavorful, mine was medium well and tasted great along with the mashed potatoes. Appetizer (soup du jour + bread w/ butter) was very nice as well. Pricing is good as well, pretty reasonable for what you get. Overall great experience. Johnny's definitely deserves more business. read more

Johnny's is a really neat place with a lot of history and cool decor. The staff was nice and we wanted to like the place. However, for being a long time Omaha staple, the food left a lot to be desired. The prime rib was cold! It was almost impossible to cut and stringy. It was nearly inedible. The au jus was in the middle of the plate around the meat, rather than on the side, which added another challenge to cutting it and keeping my clothes clean. We took the meat home and thought we could try to somehow repurpose the leftovers. The potatoes, loaded baked and mashed were good. Salad was swimming in dressing and soup had good flavor, but lacked anything substantial, such as meat or vegetables. On our way out, we were greeted by 2 super cute feral kitties that begged for our leftovers. We made sure they didn't go hungry. Overall, not good. Sadly, we will not return. read more

Went in Aug 10, 2022 for anniversary dinner. Great service! Mae was a fantastic waitperson. Side dishes - amazing, especially cowboy mashed potatoes and the spread for the bread was incredible. My wife's steak - an expensive cut - was delicious and cooked to perfection. My New York Strip was tough, gristly, unevenly cooked (some medium rare and some medium) and was AT LEAST one third fat - no meat. It wasn't worth 46 bucks, but I'm not ruining the atmosphere of anniversary dinner by sending it back. Johnny's really damaging Omaha's steakhouse rep by putting out steaks like that. Heard about this place from a few friends. Came on a Friday night right when they opened. Not too busy but heard they get busier later around 7 most nights. Like the history of the place and that it's a local place. Server was nice and helpful on what to get. Got the Broiled Ribeye with the soup of the day. The soup was good and the Ribeye came out exactly how I wanted. They also serve rolls with the cottage cheese spread which was different but actually liked it. I would have gave this place 4.5 stars but the side of hash browns was not my favorite but everything else was perfect! If your from Omaha I would recommend giving this place a shot. My husband and I came here with high expectations with it being one of the oldest and most known steakhouses in Omaha, and we were completely let down. Walking into this restaurant was kind of cool because of the history with the stock yards and everything still being original (from the decorations, carpet, to the chairs and tables). I have no problem getting thrown back in time, but having nice chairs and tables for quests to take it all in would have been nice. I felt like I was sinking into a chair from the 70's. Service did the best they could, but the real issue was with the quality of the food coming from the kitchen. The waiter came multiple times to apologize because of how slow the kitchen was, and it got worse once we received our Ribeyes. We asked for medium rare (pretty common I'd think for a quality steak house), but both of our steaks were cooked to a crisp and well done. When we showed the waiter, he lost it. He was pissed and let us know he was so sorry, and he was so sick of the kitchen screwing things up. It was honestly extremely awkward... at that point we just wanted to leave, but sat it out and waited for our corrected order. The new steaks still came out over cooked but we didn't want to deal with mentioning it again. After leaving this place, we decided we can't come back. It felt like we were on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares and Gordon Ramsey might jump out to close the place down at any second. Had people in from out of State for business and they said they wanted a good moderately priced steak. Checked Yelp and out of the 8 steakhouses in the area, thought Johnny's looked like a good selection. Johnny's is located near the old Omaha stockyards and has been in business for over 90 years. Called ahead to see if I needed reservations for a party of four. Spoke to Cindy, who was friendly and said "come on in". Got to the restaurant and was warmly greeted. Johnny's is a definitely old school steakhouse. Red carpet, dark wood tones, dark paneling. Rose was our waitress who was also very friendly and helpful. Thursday night is when Johnny's has their specials on wine. Started with the Spinach and Artichoke Dip - came with toast points. Pretty decent. Entrees were Salmon, Prime Rib and a couple Top Sirloins. Meals come with choice of potato (Au Gratin, Hash Browns or Fries). Meal also comes with fresh bread and your choice of soup (ham and bean this evening or the French onion for an upcharge) or salad. House salad comes with a sweet vinaigrette. Salad is small, but decent tasting. My three out of state dining companions really liked the salmon, prime rib and top sirloin. Unfortunately, my top sirloin was like shoe leather. First two bites were nothing but gristle and fat which were spit out. Next four bites were chewy and lacking flavor which were also spit out. The remaining steak was left on the plate. Waitress apologized and tried to get me something else, I deferred. Just did not feel like trying again after the first disappointment. Manager came over and offered the same thing as well as a free dessert. Did not get another entrée, but did try the bread pudding. Dessert of bread pudding was very good. Dining companions enjoyed Apple Crumble and Crème Brulee, Glad my out of state visitors enjoyed their meals and I do appreciate the management of Johnny's trying to make a disappointing meal right; hence the three stars, rather than the one or two I would have posted had I been eating by myself and encountered that particular meal. Omaha Steaks...my co-workers and I were craving a good steak and Marcus told us about Johnny's. The history of this restaurant is amazing, how it's been around for decades serving up some fine steak found locally here in Nebraska. The three of us decided to partake in the enjoyment of their steaks for lunch on one of our weekdays off. It was very exciting since this was our first lunch co-worker date ever and enjoying a good steak, well that's a win in my book! As soon as we walked in it was as if we stepped back in time. A few of the reviews stated that it should be updated, but I think that's what creates the charm of the restaurant. It's roots, how it started, and how it's still standing, it's clear that the decor holds nothing against its regulars and the quality of the food. We all had the luncheon steak as our choice of meat. I chose the hashbrowns as my side, my friend Joan had the corn, and Marcus had the boiled potatoes. The steak came with a mushroom sauce and the hashbrown was on a separate plate and there were lots of it. The piece itself was about 7oz but looked rather small, I ordered mine medium well and it tasted fine enough. Perhaps I will try medium rare next time I stop by. Marcus' boiled potatoes looked much more healthy than my hashbrowns but I still enjoyed them nonetheless. For dessert the three us shared a sundae. It was a nice sweet treat to top off our steak lunch. Service here was a bit slow, we arrived towards the end of the lunch crowd and there were a few tables that had yet to be cleaned off. The only waiter that was taking orders and bussing tables was our waiter. It took awhile for us to get our orders in and we waited patiently for our entrees. By the time we got our meals the lunch turned out wonderfully. We had so much fun chatting and our waters were filled in a timely manner as well. Overall, I enjoyed my meal very much. I'm surprised that this place didn't get better ratings. My friend heard a recommendation for this place so we decided to have lunch here right before heading to the zoo. There was already a small group of people waiting before opening. Even so, we were quickly seated upon entering. Their menu is fairly simple with different daily lunch specials, which was what I ordered, philly cheese steak sandwich, soup of the day, mashed potatoes, and a beverage all for $6.99! Everything was tasty and not overly greasy as philly cheese steaks can be drenched in oil. There was a large group of cute elderly women all wearing red hats. I asked the waitress about them and I was curious about these women. The waitress actually introduced me to them! I was even able to take a couple of pictures with these women. Needless to say, the service was great from the moment I stepped inside to getting an introduction to leaving the facility. I must admit that my friend and I were probably the youngest patrons in the restaurant. They seem to attract older folks, most who are regulars. Hello hard-to-get-to historic Omaha steakhouse. Why yes, the front doors are the most amazing entryway to a restaurant I think I've seen in recent memory. This and other 'old school' Omaha steakhouses (Piccolo's, Anthony's, Gorat's, etc) need a nickname. Something that encompasses the 70's decor, the loyal long-time patrons, the history and the general style of the food... like COSHes - Classic Omaha Steakhouses. Getting to the food, Johnny's like so many other COSHes, offers meat and potatoes fare. Pick a steak, pick a veggie, pick a potato type. Easy peasy. Bread on the side (with their staple cottage cheese spread. yum). You can even order scoops of Robert's Ice cream for dessert (super cute)... or other COSH staple menu items like peel and eat shrimp, onion rings, cheese garlic bread, and more. Food my grandparents love. Would it recommend it to someone? Probably not. Especially not someone visiting town... wouldn't want this to be a lasting impression of what Omaha has to offer when there are so many more interesting options, in my opinion. But the history of this place dates back to 1922. You can't tell me that doesn't mean they're doing something right... it's just not for me. read more

Went with my wife for my birthday. Was really exciting when we arrived. Old school decor gave the place a bit of a pre prohibition feel to it which was super cool. Early signs of failure started when we got to the bar and ordered our cocktails. Expecting recipes honed to perfection over the years, I ordered the old fashioned. Wasn't asked what bourbon I wanted, so I asked what they made it with. Jack Daniels. What I got was a JD in a glass with an ice cube. Missus had a dirty martini - was ok. Then we went over to dinner. Starting with the crab stuffed mushrooms, they showed up soaking in grease and were really stodgy with no actual crabmeat to speak about. Mainly all cheese. Server was nice enough, but the place clearly is struggling to fund the type of pros you expect to see at a Nebraska steakhouse. Ordered the porterhouse, medium rare. Wife ordered the sea bass 'special'. Chef said I got the 'best cut' according to the server. Turned up, steak knife couldn't cut through it. Filet was edible, the rump part wasn't even close. Decided to not make a big deal about it - when the server came over - she noticed 70% of the steak was uneaten. I explained because it was raw and inedible. She offered a 'discount'. Very sad to see such an institution fail like this - it's clearly a funding thing. You get what you pay for, or at least that's what we thought for a $300 dinner. From Texas and traveling, tried to give this place a try, never again. Waitress was not helpful. Explained we were from out of town and asked what were popular items on menu, her reply "everything". I've lived the majority of my life in South Omaha, and I am definitely one of those South Omaha Girls whose heart remains in the place of her roots. One of the restaurant cornerstones of South Omaha remains after 100 years in business. This is an amazing feat in today's restaurant environment, along with the fact that it has been owned by the same family the whole time. The owners truly caring about their customers. You can tell in the way they greet you, and they come to the table asking how your experience was tonight. And during the Covid times, their ingenuity in finding other ways to service their customers has been outstanding. They've been flexible and have kept up with the times. During this past week I have sat down and ate lunch inside the restaurant, and I have participated in a Pick-Up Take-Out Steak dinner. They also do curbside delivery, but I love going inside to see the interior decor one more time. The decor inside is one reason to go there. They don't make places with this type of craftsmanship anymore. The giant heavy entrance doors with the cattle, the gigantic cow head rug on the floor, the stained glass, the stools that look like saddles, and even the cow head on the wall in the bar whose eyes glow red. His mouth actually opens and he Moos. This was all a delight to me! I am not a fan of today's modern neutral look. When I look at all the brown box McDonalds and Taco Bell buildings today, I am really disappointed in the turn of that architecture. Who would think that is appealing? At Johnny's Cafe, your first appetizer is what graces your eyes as you walk in! For lunch I was seated in the wine cellar area, which is sort of a more private setting area. They try to space customers out into different seating areas. There are orange torches on the wall in the cellar area and pictures of grapes, so it did seem like I was in a wine cellar. We started our lunch with Beef Barley soup, which was very tasty, and a fresh bread roll that was warm. The butter wrapped in foil, is brought to your table under the bread roll, so the butter is very soft and easy to spread. I love that kind of butter! For my main course, I almost went with the special, which was Ox Tails, but I decided on the Luncheon Steak, which is a Sirloin. It was very thick, a good portion, cooked Medium-Well and juicy, just like I wanted. It was served with steamed vegetables. It comes with a dark mushroom gravy, which is optional. The waitress and the Owner made sure to check on us throughout our lunch as well. When I ordered the Take Out food online, using Loco, the food was ready right on time. It was boxed really well, and it was placed in a large cardboard box that was very easy to carry. The food was hot when I sat down at home to eat it. I took home the Omaha Strip Steak, Medium Well, with steamed vegetables and this time I had Cheesy Broccoli and Rice soup with my Dinner Roll. I loved the Johnny's Cafe Cottage Cheese Spread. I've never had anything like it before. It's very unique, but I am a lover of Cottage Cheese in general, so that's probably why it appealed to me. All in all, I was very happy with both my lunch and dinner. I am NOT a Johnny's Cafe Regular. It's been at least a year since my last visit, but guess what? Johnny's Cafe is regarded as a fixture in Omaha. It's been serving steaks in the former Stockyards district since 1922. (Two interpretive characters at the Durham Museum agree they will meet at Johnny's after the War.) Well, we had to check this out! Johnny's has been remodeled since opening, but it retains a1960s retro atmosphere and decor. Red leatherette chairs and banquettes with dim lighting and all that. In the waiting area is a display of menus going back in time. (The same steak dinner I ordered was available in the 1950s.) I ordered the Native Filet Mignon. It was a very nice 9 oz portion, tender and lean. However, here was something curious. It did not have a great deal of intrinsic flavor. Instead, the waiter brought Johnny's house steak sauce. (He also asked if another steak sauce was preferred.) Usually, a steakhouse would take offense at a guest wanting to add a steak sauce! Perhaps that is a traditional way of eating a steak in Omaha. You expect to add sauce for flavor. The Filet Mignon was accompanied by a baked potato and onion rings. My wife ordered Fried Shrimp, but found them average. The dinners also included a House Salad. We had a surprise at this restaurant. Because it was the first Saturday of the month, the waiter brought a Foie Gras appetizer for the table to go with the bread. I take it Johnny's serves something different like that each weekend. I'm glad I tried Johnny's, but it was not the best steak I have had. Johnny's is the kind of place you call an experience, not just a place for dinner. 100 years old and still run by the family who started it, the decor is clean but preserved from its original design, the food is great and relatively affordable... the kind of restaurant that you absolutely must visit, as they are a dying breed. I've been there twice in the last couple months and both times had an excellent experience -- last night prime rib, the time before a porterhouse. Great service, our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly, and the owners were working and spent a few minutes with us discussing the restaurant's storied past. Definite recommend!! read more
