My experience yesterday was really bad. I ordered a steak sandwich with cheese but they didn't add any cheese. The steak was really bad too. The fries were also very salty, I couldn't even eat them. The bread seemed wet as well. I had high expectations for this place but turns out it was really bad. I don't think the price is worth it, it's too expensive and the food isn't great. read more

I absolutely loved John's Philly Grille after coming here with friends. It's an old shack with a few tables for patio seating and the workers here are friendly and helpful! There are also chips and soft drinks available as well. I ordered "The Works" which came with onions, peppers, and mushrooms; and it was lovely! Not too sour or acidic and the portion was huge, especially for $13.95 in today's economy. Everybody always raves about the Philly place that tastes like it's Philly, or the best Phillys in the west! I love a good Philly on a very rare occasion, but craving one. I thought I'd try this hole in the wall, quite unique, sandwich place. You really can't miss it, the Philly Grill is bright, yellow and blue. They take your order through the windows on the cute little shack, but there's also quite a nice patio to sit outside and eat your food. If you're not taking it to go. They have all kinds of unique bottled pops, sides of onion rings, fries, a huge selection of sandwiches, other than just the original Philly. I had an original Philly with mushrooms, half size. My son had a John's special large size. Shared an order of wonderful large cut fries. I went here with the full intention of giving five stars but I feel that my sandwich wasn't made as ordered and it was really soggy and quite a mess. I couldn't differentiate between the bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, or meat? It was great when I added provolone and re-toasted it when it was half eaten lol. And I do you have to say bread was perfect. I will be back to try again, I just think I need to work around the menu little bit. read more

Super great service. The young lady who served us was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the Mushroom Philly and onion rings. The portions were huge. The food was hot and fresh. Both the sandwich and rings were really good. Only thing I would change is adding a little more cheese. There were spots throughout the sandwich that seemed a little dry. Truly disappointed with our order today 5/4/21. Our chili fries with extra cheese had very little chili on them and the chili was disgusting. Our cheesesteaks were very bland unlike before. Also they don't have the cherry peppers diced up like they used to. They gave us some that we chopped up at our table. Unlike McDonalds. Stopped by this little Philly cheesesteak shack after a beach day. Had great food but nothing to write home about. Seems like a crowd favorite though because people were constantly streaming in the 10 minutes we were there. The works was the overall favorite sandwich with onion rings being the favorite side. The sandwiches come out pipping hot in 10-15 minutes. Portions are really generous! It's more than enough to share between two people. Sandwiches are loaded and drippy with cheese sauce so be prepared! Not much seating available - only a couple tables outdoor under a canopy so plan for that. read more

Got 2 burgers, one with mushroom and both with cheese, both had an obscene amount of sauce and everything slid out of the buns. I was able to scrape off a spoonful of mayo and there was still more than enough. The girl at the front was nice and I liked that they didn't have boring fries. Had the original cheese steak (whole), Philly fries, and Hanks root beer. The whole is for someone who is hungry (me) or two people. A half sandwich with a side should be perfect for a person. The original cheese steak came with spicy peppers and onions. I've had plenty of cheesesteak sandwiches around Orange County and this is by far the best one. The Bread has a crisp crust and is soft on the inside. There a generous portion of meet, cheese, and onions so you are getting something in all bites of the sandwich. One of the concerns I had was the spicy peppers, but they were diced up so finely and they added the right amount of spice that improved the sandwich for me. Steak fries, like the bread, had a crisp outside while soft on the inside. Also freshly made. I've tried plenty of brands for bottled root beer so Hanks did not stand out too much for me. Just good root beer. One thing that stood out while I sat and ate was the number of regulars that appeared. It's fine but not as good as Frank's Philly in Costa Mesa. I got #4 "The Works" with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and hot peppers. Was there cheese on it? I'm not sure. More cheese would have definitely helped the sandwich. A half sandwich is plenty for one hungry person. I also got the fries. As others have noted, you should definitely ask for the fries to be cooked well done and crispy. I did not, and I suffered for it. I love this place. When I order, they're always nice and attentive. The Phillies taste great and are pretty big if you get the full size. My girl got the green pepper half Phillyand that was enough for her. Even half would fill me up to... I get the original with extra onions usually. Haven't been dissatisfied yet. I do wish they had better ranch though. And the zucchini I wished was fried at a lower temp so that they werent a little doughy inside but they're were good. No judgment on that... amazing Phillies though. I also love the soda collection. We got cream soda and root beer. Love hanks... also had a lot of different chip selections and that was cool. Lots of flavors. Only reason for my 4 stars and not 5. Hard decision for sure... was because of the ranch and doughy zucchini bites. That one was hard for me to because usually at places they have spear zucchini bites and these were round. (That's the best thing about this place) Ordered to-go, they served it quickly. (Another plus) After the 5-minute drive back to my hotel the sandwich was still hot... but already VERY soggy, leaking juice thru the paper bag--and the bread was mushy in spots. Meat was decently flavorful... could have had more cheese on it. Peppers and mushrooms were in large, undercooked chunks. I'd rate the sandwich 3.5/5 stars. The fries were disappointing. Only a few were crispy at all. Most of them tasted like raw potatoes. Not much of the advertised "special seasoning." 2.5/5 stars for the fries. Service was fast & and the meal was filling, so I don't regret eating it... but I do think these guys could try a little harder.
