Best chicken pot pie i ever had, the crust is amazing all around, thre breading was not soggy, it was perfect with amazing gravy . Salad taste was ok but all the ingredients was fresh and of course we got the apple salad. Apple was good. Portions are big. Service was great. Felt welcomed . [[HIGHLIGHT]]Its a tiny cozy spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Im coming back for that chicken pot pie.

Stopped by with my fiancé for bunch and we got the cinnamon roll French toast and country fried steak. It was great! The french toast was as sweet as we expected but even bigger than anticipated, lol. The country fried steak was perfectly crispy, gravy was flavorful, and the fresh cider hit the spot. Place was packed too but the food came out pretty quick maybe a 20-30 min wait. Always a fan of great service too so I'll add our server was super nice and welcoming. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small spot inside but the oversized food portions make this place bigger.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If I'm in Julian and want more than just pie, this is definitely one of my go to spots.

If you're ever in Julian, you've gotta check out this place. I got here late after breakfast, but I still was able to get cranberry white chocolate, Belgian waffle. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's baked inside ,not on the outside not too sweet. They also are known for their pies. We got an apple one very good. Cara was our waitress. She was very friendly and patient with our large group.

We were a little nervous about the reviews but came with no expectations a little before 10 am on a Saturday and really enjoyed our experience. Our wait was 20-30 mins. Customer service was good, our server and the bussers were friendly and attentive. The bacon was thick and cooked perfectly, the scrambled eggs were fluffy, and the French toast had the perfect flavor and texture. The boysenberry/apple pie crumble was amazing and the best way to end my meal. The cinnamon roll was huge and wasn't too bad, wouldn't order it again but got it for the experience. The butter on top was unnecessary and the frosting was excessive. We sat at a table near the front and could hear the wait times and the later you came, the longer your wait. The average wait became 1 hr 20 mins, then 1.5 hours. This restaurant is good but not amazing to wait that long... The one thing I noticed was that the path to the restroom is the same path where the food sits when it's finished and is waiting to be dropped off to tables. Customers walking by can easily breathe/sneeze/cough on or near the food but I just tried not to think about it. It's a small restaurant. Would dine here again.

10/14/25 My kind of place, a classic mom & pop cafe with rustic ambiance & appeal- warm & attentive service. After picking up a few pies at Julian Pie Co in Santa Ysabel, found our way back here in neighboring city of Julian. The Farmhouse was sadly closed on a Tuesday, otherwise that's where we would have dined instead. I'm so glad this was right in front of Mom's Pie across the street. Rebecca was our wonderful server who checked on us many times to ensure our experience was nothing but impeccable. At first glance, the fried chicken caught my eye & Hubby ordered a bowl of chili with the onions, sour cream & cheese on the side, with corn bread, of course. I counted about 13 table in this cafe that could seat two to four each, some free standing, some booths- which could easily accommodate 6 small adults. Our food arrived shortly & it was hot & fresh. After the customary photo ops, we dug in. It took all of my courage to NOT ravage it coz I was hangry! It's 4 pm & it would've been our first meal of the day. My fried chicken was scrumptious--oh so crunchy & full of seasoned flavor, the meat inside was tender & moist. The mashed potatoes with gravy were the perfect partner to offset the richness of the fried chicken-- Hubby loved it, too! Hubby's chili was pretty good, good amount of spices but we've had better. It was so good, though to be thick & hearty on a cold, rainy, fall day. The cornbread was a bit dry, nothing to write home about. The best part of this meal? When Rebecca dropped by & we were about to settle the bill, she said that it had already been taken care of.... What!? She said one of the customers had already paid for it. Instantly I knew sho it was because I happened to notice a kindly gentleman eating solo in one corner, and I guessed correctly that he was the one who did!!! I am beyond in awe. Wow! Rebecca said that gentleman comes from out of town regularly & he randomly pays for other customers' meals & chooses to remain unknown. It was already a 5 star experience but Mr. Kind & Generous made it so much special. I am truly Blessed, Hubby & I are very fortunate. Thanks, Julian Cafe!

Originally known for being the "Home of the famous Julian Apple Pie" this cozy kitchen to table cafe has so much more to offer, paying homage to its early roots in Julian, which is noticeable as soon as you step through those doors! Make sure you bring your appetite, as these portions will leave you craving for a midday nap if you come unprepared! The service was as sweet as the pie. Do yourself a favor and make sure you add this place on your to-do list when you get into town!

While visiting Julien , We always Stop by Julian Cafe Love to Support a Family Owned Great Business [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a Cozy place .[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They serve up some Delicious food , Great Portions . This time around we had the French dip it was Excellent & Julia's Hot Chicks sandwich Spicy Nashville Chicken topped with Coleslaw & Pickles Delicious. The Chicken was Juicy & Crispy had it with French fries & ordered side of Onion rings . Honorable mention last time we tried the Cinnamon Roll & Pie with Ice Cream . Cara was our server . We stopped in for lunch mid-week. The weather was nice plus it was not crowded. A plus in my book. Upon entering the nice waitress seated us immediately. I decided to try the Julian apple burger and a blackberry lemonade. Plus we shared some zucchini. Whoa, was my first thought biting into my burger. The combination of apples, grilled onions, bleu cheese and the maple mustard sauce was just phenomenal. No wonder it's a house favorite! I just wish I had enough of the maple mustard sauce to dip my zucchini into. But no worries they had ranch sauce. I enjoyed my blackberry lemonade. More so after I watered it down as it was a bit too sweet for me. If I order it again I'd get half water half of the lemonade in a glass. The zucchini was tasty and I suspect the yummy ranch sauce was homemade. I really enjoy this cafe as I know the food will always be fresh, delicious and scratch made. Plus the wait staff are always friendly, helpful and speedy.

Spent a beautiful, sunny day in Julian and had a late lunch at this quaint cafe. My friend ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and I ordered the most popular dish - chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes and gravy. The portions were very generous. My friend said her burger was delicious. Unfortunately my meal was too bland for my taste. The servers were really nice and attentive for such a busy place. Many places close at 5pm but cafe stays open until 8pm.

The only negative is some of the employees aren't very nice, but that was minor compared to the rest of the experience. Don't eat too much so you have room for pie! We stopped by here because its the few places open and only one that served dessert. The pie was super tasty and comforting. I looooooved the warm apple cider. It was the PERFECT dessert for a winter night. Service was excellent, fast and friendly. I would love to come back for a meal next time!

First time in Julian, glad we stopped here for lunch. I think we had the Julian salad that had apples, candied walnuts, blue cheese and poppy seed dressing. It was delicious! We also ate the burger and fries and that was amazing! Service was friendly and would recommend this establishment. Definitely make a stop here.

Very tasty and flavorful food. I ordered the chicken pot pie turnover, it was packed with flavor as were the mashed potatoes. The coleslaw was good I just had to add some black pepper and salad to it. I also ordered a Arnold Palmer (lemonade with iced tea), which was very sour, but once I added half a cup of water and some sugar it was perfect. The staff was friendly, they were just busy so it took a minute to take our order. The decor and atmosphere of this restaurant was nice, it was just very loud, but it's because it's a small cafe so it makes sense that voices echo. Overall I enjoyed this restaurant, 5 stars! When we are in Julian, this is the place we go for breakfast. It has a very rustic charm and feel to the entire restaurant. Only draw back is that the seating is very limited and the wait is on average 40 - 45 min. However, on busy days, the wait can be even more. I suggest going early to avoid the longer wait times. Also, all of the portions are big and so sharing a plate might be a great idea. read more

Julian local that has frequented this establishment. Typically hit or miss experience from the staff to the food. Sometimes they add 18% gratuity for 4 adults and 1 toddler. Also they added on an automatic gratuity of 18% with no warning on take out orders. Most places announce it in the menu or give you a heads up. Will not be going back after multiple disappointing visits. read more

Rustic dishes that aren't mind-blowing but very reasonable given the price point and portion sizes. They usually have a line out the door but the turnaround is fast. Our servers were quick and they even offered to take orders preemptively so we could get our food upon being seated. Biggest complaint is that the restaurant was packed like sardines so the ambiance and service was limited and rushed. =YUM= All entrees were humongous, expect to have leftovers. *Chicken Pie Turnover: came with garlic mashed potatoes and fries or coleslaw. The crust was a bit too soggy for my preference but the pie filling was tasty. Inside had lots of tender chicken chunks, peas and carrots. Coleslaw was lukewarm and sweet. Garlic mashed potatoes were thick and creamy and the gravy added some saltiness. Wished there was more garlic but it was a better side than the coleslaw. *Country Fried Chicken & Waffles: super satisfying crunch. Chicken could have been more moist but I enjoyed the batter. Came with one crispy waffle that needed the syrup to add sweetness and softness since it was a bit hard. *Hot Caramel Apple Cider: a must have in Julian. The whipped cream and caramel made it more fall-esque. *Fresh Julian Apple Cider: a must have in Julian. Choose between hot or cold, with the cold option being a dollar more. Personally, preferred the hot version. =MEH= *Julian Apple Burger: apples were incorporated in the patty for extra moisture but it was still overcooked so it came out dry anyway. Mediocre slaw but I liked the pickles. While Julian Cafe isn't perfect, they serve dishes that encapsulate the charm of Julian for a reasonable price--which is enough for me as a tourist. A hearty, filling meal for under $15 will satiate most visitors. read more

Headed to Julian for Apple Picking. Saw this place with reviews and figured we would grab a quick bite. 25 minute wait when we checked in, turned into a 50 minute wait. Had we known this we would've gone somewhere else. Got seated. We were all ready to order but were told that the first waitress was only for drinks. Then the second waitress takes our orders. We wait a fair amount of time. Good finally comes and it is NOT gray by any means. The only good thing was my husbands burger. The fries were over cooked, my daughters BLT was over cooked and my son n laws burger and fries were over cooked. And my grandson only took one bite of a "chicken nugget" that looked old and over cooked. Don't recommend, won't go back. All that waiting and we couldn't wait to leave. read more

Wait time goes by fairly quick. We definitely recommend any of the pies and hot ciders. This place has a few booths and a couple tables inside. There is nowhere to wait inside and if you have a stroller, make sure it folds or there won't be any room inside for it. read more

Such a cute little café in the middle of Julian. We went for breakfast had pancakes, eggs and bacon it was delicious. Service is very very good. The place was clean and neat. They have long hours because they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I recommend you stop in for their Apple pie. They had a brisk to go business at the window. read more

Let's be fair with this place and value very objetive. The food in general is tasty, its comfort food; the chili beans were awesome and the hot cider too ! The ambiance and friendliness of this place is fantastic. The building is historical and the menu has a great timeline of all the different lives this little spot has led. The decor is in keeping with an old gold mining town right down to the wagon wheels on the booths. We ordered breakfast and it was ok. Not bad, not great. Toast a little burned, eggs had a shell mixed in, but not bad. Serviceable. The pie however... :) We went back to get a pie to take home. Boysenberry and apple with a crumb topping. It was delicious! Giving 5 stars because overall we had a great experience. Between my husband and I, we tried the baby back ribs, chicken pot pie, clam chowder, salad, potatoes, green beans, and apple boysenberry pie a la mode. The chicken pot pie was pretty good but not great, but everything else was excellent! Additionally, the service was great! Super friendly and helpful staff. And lastly, the ambience in the cafe was very pleasant and enjoyable. Highly recommend Julian Cafe. read more

Unbelievably rude. Is that how they think you can treat people? Made us wait an hour and we ended up never eating there because they said "we didn't hear them call us". Keep in mind it's an EXTREMELY small cafe and we were waiting in the tiny front part for an hour. When we kindly brought up they were serving people who got there 40 minutes after us they actually ignored us as if we weren't speaking, scoffed, and gave no solutions. I saw them be rude to everyone. Management I would take a look at your hosts and the impression they are giving off. This level of rudeness is unacceptable and embarrassing. read more

Super cute cafe and a great place to stop after a day in Julian. I came in here super hungry and I'm glad I did since the portions are absolutely huge! I got some iced tea along with the BBQ chicken salad. It came in a tortilla bowl that was about as big as my head and was stuffed full! Plus they put tons of chicken in there! Salad was quite good and I enjoyed the iced tea as well. I would love to come back and try some different things I had my eye on. Don't forget to check out all the fun candles on your way in or out! read more

The house made Corned Beef hash omelette was amazing!! Meaty bacon! The Avocado toast I have not seen anything like it. We came here on a Sunday around 1:30pm. We were seated right away and someone came and took our orders a few minutes after we sat down. I ordered the Chicken Turnover Pie and apple pie with a crumble crust. The crumble on the apple pie was so buttery and the chicken pie was soo scrumptious and incredibly filling. My boyfriend ordered the burger and he said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had. The servers were all very attentive too. Friendly servers! Great food! Fun atmosphere! This place is the best. I love the Julian apple salad. I get it without the candied nuts and it is so delicious. The poppyseed dressing is light and tasty and comes on the side. I also enjoy the Julian apple burger. It has apples in it which sounds weird but is delicious! It has blue cheese crumbles and a mustard sauciness that makes my mouth water. I get it with a lettuce wrap and oh my, is it good! Definitely delicious and the friendliest people around. I would've given them 5 stars, but the young girl who I was being greeted at when going inside was a little standoffish and looked just plain irritated. If you're her, I hope you are okay and have great days coming ahead!! Another girl came to take my order and she was really kind. The person at the outside kiosk was nice. But the 4 stars really go towards their chicken pot pie turnover! It was DELICIOUS. I got mine with mashed potatoes, salad, and green beans and it was just so good. I will definitely get this again when I come to visit Julian again in the future. read more

I haven't been up to Julian in like 30 years. I used to live in San Diego, and almost every weekend, we'd hop on the motorcycles, and make a trip up here. So, when i was visiting San Diego, I had to make the drive back "up the hill". I wish I still had a motorcycle to do it on..... It's a nice space. I really liked the Western decor. Even though it was a Monday in mid-November, there were still quite a few people in the cafe. I was seated and had my order taken quickly. Everyone was friendly and efficient. They have a very large menu, but what caught my eye was the Julian Apple Burger. A burger with shredded apple inside. The server said it was very good, and I know that Julian is apple country, so I decided to be a little adventurous and try it. It was delicious. The apples brought a nice sweet to the savory burger. The burger also had carmelized onions, bleu cheese crumbles, and a maple mustard sauce. I really liked the onions and the mustard sauce, but I thought that the bleu cheese brought a little bit too much "funk" to the party for my personal taste. . It was still a very good burger. It comes with fries or coleslaw. I chose the coleslaw, I liked it. The cabbage was crunchy, the dressing was good, and it was not overdressed. They have a good number of desserts, including a fair number of pies. Again, I decided to be adventurous, and try the apple pumpkin crumble pie. It was a 2 layer pie, apple and pumpkin. Again, I was pleasantly surprised. it doesn't sound like the two would play well together, but the two flavors were very good. One did not overwhelm the other. The crust was tender and flaky. For all I got, and considering that Julian is a tourist area, the prices were *VERY* reasonable. If you are military or a veteran, they will also give you a discount. The cafe is small on the inside granted it is catered towards campers and hikers. So if you have a huge party just get your food to go. The service was great for our party of four. We took ours to go, cause the place was packed once we showed up. The food was great, but I will say, eat your food soon as possible. Cause condensation kills the vibe of the food if you take too long to eat it. The crepes with scrambled eggs was on another level. The chicken and waffles was good but I'm going to go for the chicken and mashed potatoes next time. The biscuits were huge, so definitely get some of those. We had good time walking around and taking in the scenery. read more

Whenever it snows in Julian, I come down to this cafe for lunch. It's been a tradition for me and my wife the past few years. We ordered the chicken and waffles, mama's fish fry, and chicken tortilla soup. The chicken and waffles were solid. They give you a big piece of chicken so that was pretty filling. The fries for the fish fry, were really good. The fish itself had plenty of meat and the perfect amount of batter. I wouldn't order the chicken tortilla soup again because it was too salty. All in all, this a solid place to grab a quick bite if you're in town!! read more

We came to Julian on a whim. We were amused that they had a take out window for pie slices, much like ice cream stands have. When we walked into this restaurant, we were the only people there, but, even though it was late (going on 4:00), several people came in after us. We all had different kinds of burgers. My sister & I shared the Julian burger, which had apples, onions and bleu cheese. I didn't really taste the apples, though; in fact, the main thing I tasted was the bleu cheese. We also shared a patty melt, which as really good. We split fries, which were pretty good, and cole slaw, which was pretty perfect for my tase. Our dad got the tortilla soup, which he liked, but we thought it was salty. He also had the Lone Star burger, which he enjoyed. I thought the decor was fun, with its very western theme. And the restroom had a sink made from a barrel, and there was an actual WC! I would certainly go back if I were to come back to Julian. read more

While visiting Julian overnight for our first time we decided to visit some local eateries. We enjoyed our meal here. Food was very good. Hubby had the Julian apple burger and I had the chicken turnover. Also ordered the potato skins for appetizer and had to take left overs because portions were so large. Would recommend this restaurant. But be prepared to wait if you have a large party. Also I do not understand their 5% recession fee. Food prices were not low so why the extra fee? read more

We picked up a small breakfast for our drive back home this morning, and it was so good! We had a full order of biscuits and gravy, which was enough for mom, dad and two small kiddos! The gravy wasn't too salty and the biscuits were so rich and delicious. We also got a cinnamon roll that was out of this world! I would say the best I've ever had! I still have the other half in the fridge that I can't wait to finish tomorrow! Lastly, we got a slice of apple boysenberry pie that was pretty good, although it was a little mushier than I had hoped. Fantastic breakfast spot in a quaint and artisanal town of Julian. They currently have indoor and outdoor dining. We stopped by here for breakfast on our way back home from our weekend trip to San Diego. It was VERY chilly, so bring a jacket with you. Their dine-in was full so we opted to sit outside even though it was cold as hell, but thankfully they provided heaters outside. The one by our table ended up running out of propane, but the staff was more than nice enough to change it out for us when they found one in stock in the back. We ordered a vegetarian omelette that came with a side of potatoes and their chicken fried steak that also came with a side of potatoes and toast. I also ordered a cup of hot apple cider. The cider was DELICIOUS. Hot enough to warm the body with just the perfect level of sweet and tanginess. The vegetable omelette was also perfect, the egg white outside was nice and fluffy with delectable cooked veggies inside. The potatoes were tasty, albeit a little bit too big in portions that it was hard to eat, if they cut it into smaller pieces, perfection! The staff were amazingly on point, always made sure our heater was working and that our order and drinks were served/refilled. BEST CHICKEN AND WAFFLES I'VE EVER HAD. This is my third time returning to Julien Cafe from San Diego specifically to have their chicken and waffles, because I swear it's like an out of body experience.. and I'm not exaggerating. There is no doubt that the rest of their food is good. Also had the chicken potpie turn over and ohhhh man. Out of this world. Everything I see walking by looks amazing. The service is outstanding!!! Food was insanely delicious. We went for breakfast and both got veggie omelettes. Their home fries are tasty and their bacon was perfect. We got their specialty pumpkin waffles which was heavenly. Coffee was pretty good. We did have to wait about an hour to be seated but hey it was a Saturday in October, we just walked around for awhile while we waited. Highly recommend! read more

Sure this is a tourist town but that's why you're here! If I have to complain about something it's that there's nothing by any means light on the breakfast menu. Portions are ridiculous, even the orange juice is huge. I literally only ate 1/3 of the food on my plate and was stuffed. A huge corned beef hash omelette and a mound of quite nice fried potatoes. So at today's prices you have to call this a value. Cute place, friendly, small but they move you through pretty well. read more

The cafe is super small but they were getting diners in and out of the place quickly. It is designed as your quaint mountain country style kitchen with lots of wood and historical artifacts. The menu is vast with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had the hot open faced Roast Beef sandwich with Mashed Potatoes. Now I like to consider myself a connoisseur of this menu item because when I see it on a menu, I order it. This by far was the best I have eaten. First things first, the portions are big. You might want to share this. The sandwich itself was perfectly prepared. The gravy was tasty, the mashed potatoes were fresh, and the bread was toasted with a garlic butter so that the gravy doesn't make it soggy. We also were able to try the fried chicken. This was the most tastiest, crispiest fried chicken I ever had. The waitress made sure we never had to ask for anything and was always one step ahead of what we needed. I will definitely eat here again next time I make it up to Julien. read more

The original facility built on this site was erected in 1872, since that time the building has gone through many "lives", including burning down in 1957; however, the final destination of the now Julian Cafe and Bakery was established in 1972 and remains today.

Food was so good (burger and grilled chese with brisket.) And even though it's in the podunk Santa Ysabel, there are other things (pie, bread) at the same intersection so you can get a lot done. I'd like to also call out the fries. I have an unhealthy obsession and visceral reaction to bad fries, but Farmhouse 78 hits it out of the park with their fries. It defies logic that other sit-down places will meticulously prepare quality, fresh food, then slap frozen Ore-Idas down on the plate. Farmhouse 78 does not do that. Fresh cut potatoes fried in beef tallow. Doesn't get any better than that. I'd add a sixth star just for the fries if I could. I plowed through them before I even touched the sandwich.

The only pleasant person we encountered was the busser--quick, friendly, and actually seemed like he wanted to be there. Maybe swap their roles, because he outperformed her by a mile. Food: Let's talk about the food... if that's what we're calling it. Everything came out cold. Not "warm-ish," not "could be hotter"... just straight up cold. It felt like our plates were sitting under a heat lamp for way too long before making it to the table. One "white" friend asked to have her meal fixed--fine, no problem. But when another "Hispanic" friend asked the same thing? Suddenly there was attitude, menu slamming, and mumbling under her breath. So... what exactly was the difference? Why the inconsistency and hostility? If the kitchen is that backed up, maybe management should step in and help instead of letting food die in the window. Just a thought. Final Thoughts: This place had potential... but that waitress single-handedly ruined it. We'll be taking our group (and our money) elsewhere--Dudley's Bakery is looking like a much better option moving forward. I usually bring large groups out here, so this isn't a small loss. Unfortunately, if this is the level of service they're okay with, this place isn't going to improve anytime soon. At this point, it's less "Farmhouse charm" and more "junky barn energy."

So refreshing, not overly sweet. We ordered the Brussel sprouts appetizer, which appeared faster than we had expected. Yummy I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with the fried chicken. He ordered the burger. Fettuccine light but with excellent flavor, the fried chicken was moist and not over coated. The burger was oozing with beef juices. Although his mashed potatoes were a bit dry, the gravy was very tasty. I'd say the atmosphere is casual, but not shorts and tank casual. Definitely not business casual or dressy. Unfortunately, that attention to ingredient sourcing seems to stop when it comes to cooking oils. Many of the menu items are prepared with soybean oil, which was disappointing given the otherwise high-quality and health-conscious image of the restaurant. Soybean oil is highly processed and contains large amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats. While omega-6 fats are essential in moderation, excessive consumption relative to omega-3 intake has been associated with increased inflammation in some research. Soybean oil is also more susceptible to oxidation when exposed to high cooking temperatures, potentially producing compounds that some studies suggest may contribute to oxidative stress. There is just something special about the small-town charm that Julian has to offer. My family and I were spending the evening in town and decided to finally give Julian Café a try. It was our first visit, and I have to admit, when we first walked in, I was a little hesitant. It felt like we had stepped back in time to the Old West, with its rustic décor and cozy atmosphere. The dining room is set up in a way that makes it feel like everyone notices when you walk in, which was a little intimidating at first. That feeling quickly disappeared when we were greeted by a warm, friendly smile from a staff member who welcomed us inside. We were seated right away, and I immediately noticed how unique the booths were--they're designed to resemble little covered wagons, adding to the café's charming Western theme. It's those little details that make the experience memorable. The young woman who initially helped us was incredibly kind, took our drink order, introduced us to our server, and made us feel right at home. Our server, Rebecca, truly made the experience exceptional. She was patient, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Since it was our first time, she walked us through the menu, answered every question we had, and made excellent recommendations. Throughout our meal she kept our drinks filled, checked on us often without being intrusive, and made us feel like we were regulars instead of first-time guests. When our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. Everything came out piping hot, beautifully prepared, and the portions were huge! The prices are moderate, but considering the quality and generous serving sizes, it's an incredible value. We all left completely stuffed with plenty of leftovers to enjoy later. Of course, we couldn't leave Julian without taking home one of their famous apple pies. It was definitely a little more expensive than your average pie, but since we don't make it out here very often, we decided to treat ourselves--and it was worth every bite. From start to finish, we didn't have a single complaint. Great food, wonderful service, generous portions, and a warm, hometown atmosphere made for an unforgettable dining experience. I'm honestly surprised this place only has a 3.5-star rating, especially since many of the reviews are a couple of years old. I'm not sure if people simply aren't reviewing it enough, but in my opinion, this place is incredibly underrated. Between the welcoming staff, the cozy hometown feel, and the quality of the food, Julian Café easily exceeded our expectations. I can't believe I waited this long to stop in after driving past it so many times over the years. This café is truly one of Julian's best-kept secrets... but I'm not a gatekeeper. The secret is officially out, Julian! If you're ever in town, do yourself a favor and stop by Julian Café. You won't leave hungry, and you'll probably leave feeling like family. AMBIANCE Parking: Street parking, depending on the time and day the events. It can get either pretty busy or you can find close parking. A true small town feel - there are many things to do and stay engaged from the museums, events, or good eats. Walking into Julian Cafe feels like stepping back in time. Historic photos line the walls, the aroma of fresh pies fills the air, and there's a comforting mountain-town charm that's hard to replicate. It has the feel of a classic hometown diner where both locals and visitors gather after a day of exploring Julian. FOOD / DRINKS Chicken Pot Pie (Highly Recommend) Yes. If you're looking for something fulfilling maybe after starving from a long trip or hike, this is comforting. The flaky, buttery crust paired perfectly with the savory creamy chicken filling. Your blessed with a lot of gravy and in the mornings, you get tater tots! Apple-Boysenberry Pie (Highly Recommend) Yes, when in Julian, you need your pie! I was very overwhelmed with the choices so I went with the seasonal and I'm glad I did. The combination of tart apples and sweet-tangy boysenberries created a wonderful balance of flavors. I had the choice of brown sugar crust to make it extra sweet. I even mixed some with my black coffee to incorporate the sweetness. CUSTOMER SERVICE Awesome! I received that small town welcoming. It's hard to receive that in these hustle and bustle towns, these just hit differently. TL;DR OVERALL 4.5 Stars. Ok the reason i give one star cause when we came in there is one lady ahead of us was waiting and i don't know how long she is waiting but we (4 of us: 2 adult 2 kids) stand behind her and waiting about 15,20 minutes but no host to talk and nobody say anything when we waited for a while.And behind us its a man and he start walks to the back and ask the waitress and then she start talked to him and she came in the front asked the lady in the front of us and then the guy behind us.That guy was cut in the front of us and start telling her that he is next thats how rude of him,so my husband was angry and raise the voice with that guy cause we are waiting a long time and the kids are hungry and they keep walk around (its busy and tiny in there) and that guy he said he came to the back and asked the waitress but we didn't .We don't wanna be rude cut in the front of the lady came before us.He is very rude to do that.And i am blaming for the waitress too cause she the one should ask everyone first and shouldn't told us that if we are arguing or loud then she will kick us out.Really?We are bringing the bussiness to your place and you just being special and talk to the customers like that?Ok then good luck to your restaurant.First time visit to Julian and your restaurant and with that experience Sorry we don't need it!!!And hope everyone should research before come to this place read more

Went there for brkfst n waited 15 min before server came to take order. Felt sorry for her. Bad management all around d. 1 server n busgirl for pack restaurant is ridiculous. Food was less than par but the morning server was nice. This review is not not base on her service. I actually had to call the busgirl over n let her know that no one has been to my table n she went got the server but by the time she came i was not I'm the mood to eat.. This is base on when I came back the second time to have lunch. The same busgirl was working n she came n got my drinks. After that I waited for 15 mins(looked at my phone when I got sat.) There was the same server that waited on me in the morning n 1 other table which she was waiting on. I never got acknowledge from her n she saw me sitting there or the other server that was working. Heard them all talking but not once did anyone besides the busgirl came to service me. Another table came in after me n they were waited on first. It's unacceptable when amost an emply restaurant n no service or hi, I'll be right with u. They both saw me when I walk in n told me to sit where ever but 15 min later not even come to me table. Bland food, high prices, owner is rude and exploits Julian for its tourist money. Some of the locals we talked to said she doesn't even live anywhere near Julian. There are over 10 places to eat in Julian , go to one of them instead of here. Of course if you like your neighbors elbows in your food when your trying to eat you might like this place. Place is a shit hole, if you don't believe me take a walk through the kitchen to the bathroom and check the filth out for yourself. Julian Grille, Jeremeys on the Hill, Ramanos, Margaritas, Baileys, Rong Branch , and Buffalo Bills (excellent Breakfast), are all way better and only a few examples of food in Julian. I feel sorry for some of the servers who have to work here. Neither me or my family or anyone I know will ever eat here again, ever. I will spread this like a disease . Through the motorcycle communities I know so well , through the community everywhere and anywhere someone will listen. This little restaurant occupies a spot that would be good for a street taco shop. For those of you who still fell they need to try this spot , enjoy a boot full of mud water. read more

This small, crowded establishment has been the Go-To place for my son and I, on four of the last five Thanksgivings, including yesterday. Only his pulling watch, in 2014, kept us away that year. The meal is soup or salad, followed by a full plate of a complete turkey or ham dinner (or one could order a slice of each meat). A beverage accompanies, as does fresh-baked bread. Dessert is extra, but with the generous serving, that is actually better for the health. We took one of their signature apple pies, to go, as did our two dining companions, after yesterday's exquisite meal. Julian itself has drawn us regularly, when I am out here from Arizona. Son will go overseas soon, in the course of his Navy enlistment, but I will remain a visitor to Julian, as this was the first place my late wife and I lived as a couple, if only for a few days, at the end of her teaching stint here. read more

I went up on a Sunday with family and we waited to be seated around 20 min and took a while to get our food. However we were greeted right away and my coffee cup was filled all the time ! I work at a restaurant as well so I know the wait for food and seating wasn't ideal for breakfast, but the food was average not to bad. If your wondering why I gave it a 5 star review it's because I when I went to the restroom I saw 1 cook in back who was older than my grandma, and did not see much help. That's why the food took so long, but I appreciate that the kitchen works so hard and I will not complain about that. All the staff was wonderful. And I appreciate your service! I came here to visit Julian for the first time and I stopped at this cafe. The service was absolutely horrible. The workers there ignored everyone except their regulars. After waiting awhile to finally be noticed to be seated, I ordered food and I saw it sitting on the counter for awhile. After waiting 10 minutes I finally asked the waitress if that was my plate, then she grabbed it and gave it to me. By then it was already really cold. I was with a few other people and we never had refills on our drinks. She never apologized for the bad service or even said thank you. I will definitely not be returning here. read more

We drove up to Julian today to have some lunch and was disappointed when we got the Julian Cafe. They have the sidewalk blocked off with signs at one end and tables at the other end. We may have stayed but we saw someone trip over a chair and it as if no one even cared. What really put us off to staying there to eat was realizing a wheelchair could never get down the sidewalk. All they need to do is to move a few chairs. I watched as people had to walk in the street. Why is that? All wasn't lost we down the street and ate at Hero's what a great place! read more

A group of us decided to go to Jullian just to get out of the city. Thank goodness the weather was not that great, because it was still busy. Can you just imagine what it would be like if the weather was good? I always like to come here because of the food, but after we get here and have to wait and wait I always wonder why? Service was alright but I was shocked that a $10 tip was added on for my family of five. I was also disappointed for the extra charge for gravy on my bisquit and extra charge for hometown potatoes vs regular potatoes. They took the order of another customer that came way after us before they came to take ours. When we pointed that out they said, "yea sorry that happens we get busy". I was disappointed with my experience here. They DON'T offer any GLUTEN-FREE breakfast options, which was a letdown. The hot chocolate was decent but nothing special. To make matters worse, the bathrooms were locked, and when I approached the staff for assistance, they seemed in a rush to get me in and out. They were not helpful, and do not treat all of their guests with the same courtesy and respect. On top of that their pie is from canned apples, the whole town knows that, apparently. I would suggest going to Julian Grille where you can receive some real service and food. read more
