We grabbed a spinach/mushroom quiche and a prosciutto baguette sandwich. The quiche was ok, however it did have a really nice croissant crust. But the sandwich was definitely the better choice. The baguette was really delicious, a crispy hard baguette, not the mushy ones you normally get at other places. You can come in at any time during the day and if they are open then that person is hanging out in the back and you have to wait for them or call out for them to get help. I was on a walk up in the neighborhood and I became really thirsty because it was pretty hot outside. I came in because they had a nice-looking selection of soda cans. I walked up to the selection of sodas available and picked up a Diet Coke. I noticed that they also had pastries but that didn't fit in with my meal plan for the day, although they did smell really good. The employee was really nice, which I appreciated. However, I did notice that a can of Coke was close to four dollars! This was the only place that I had been to in the city that charged this much for only a can. A bottle of Coke in some places is only two or three dollars. This was less of the product for more money. That didn't make any sense! I'm sure if I came back for the pastries I would have had a better experience but this wasn't great. I've had this place bookmarked for awhile! So glad they opened a second location in the Upper Eastside! They've got everything from delicious pastries to French butters to macarons! Prologue Julien is my new friend in the neighborhood. I recently came from Paris so I'm obsessed with boulangeries which is why I started looking for the perfect Parisian bakery in the city the minute I stepped out of the plane. Exposition: Place & Decor This boulangeries has a couple of locations in the city but I only tried the one at Madison Ave. It's just a counter with a nice view of the pastries they have but it's spacious enough to allocate a decent amount of people while waiting for your precious turn. It also has some French groceries and exquisites like cheese, marmalades, cookies and the like. Characters: Staff & Service The staff is pretty friendly, especially taking in consideration a customer like me which sometimes can feel like a pain in the ass, why? because I want exactly THAT croissant, not that one. Yeah, I'm a picky mofo. Action: Food What to tell you? just get anything, like A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G. Everything (and anything) is top of the line. Croissants, pastries, macarons, etc. I especially loved their flan tart which reminded me of the ones I devoured in France and the amazing pasteis de nata from Portugal. It has a terrific fluffy flan flavor with real vanilla, plus that tartelette crust that makes it crunchy at the same time. Climax: Dessert To me, the pistacho twist is everything. Send from God, it's the perfect pairing of all the things I want: a croissant, custard cream, nuts and pistachio. It's all the right things: crusty and crunchy, with a soft and spongy textures inside filled with a lot! of pistachio custard cream and sprinkled with some pistachio nuts on top. The macarons are great and super fresh although I'm not a big fan of them in general. We got the Dulce de Leche one (obviously coming from an Argentinian), but the cookie was too fruity which didn't make the cut for me. It doesn't blend well with the DDL. It's a nice treat for the sweet tooth but I'm not crazy about them. Resolution: Experience This is my go-to French boulangerie (for) now. I'm in the hunt for more, but I'd certainly will get my French flan and pistachio twist from here. It's also super close to Central Park which makes it the perfect spot to get your picnic goodies: a baguette, some cheese, a croissant and some sweet delights, and off you go to a beautiful afternoon in the grass.
