I wish I could give a 0 for service based on the owner lady's attitude toward Asian customers. I live close by to this cafe , and I go there on a weekly basis . The staff behind the counter is always friendly but I definitely can't say that about the owner lady . Too many times I have observed her only saying hello to non Asian customers next to me and her eyes always skip me . I had played a game by staying in the store longer to see if she would eventually say hello but she never did . It was very consistent on her part I have to say . I spent thousands in her store. Today same thing again took place the day before Christmas -she greeted all her other customers with merry Christmas, and offered little champagne skipping me . I stood in front of her for more than 8 mins while waiting for the staff to package my food. So I finally approached her and shared with her my take of her. I used to come up with reasons for her behavior but today it was way too obvious . I hope she will change moving forward . This seems the epitome of racism . The food is pricy and good . PRE-COVID REVIEW: there's nothing like having brunch and mimosa's with your friends to help make everything better! I finally tried this place last year, after having it bookmarked for so long. This spot has both indoor and outdoor dining (outdoor is a cute patio area) whereas the indoor overlooks part of the bar. They don't have a Yelp waitlist but they seat you quite quickly, once you put your name down (~10-15 minute). The menu has both sweet and savory options (opted for the savory, and got a delicious omelette). They also give you bread with your order *it's hard, but try not to eat too much of it* because you could get full before the entree arrives. Their mimosa drinks are really flavorful too (blends well with the champagne) and a little does go a long way! 4.5/5 for the brunch and service at Julienne! Nice atmosphere and good service. Stopped by for a quick lunch (at 1 PM on a weekday), food was delicious and I was satiated (and my wallet a bit lighter). Complimentary rosemary currant bread is brought to each table, and it smells amazing and tastes the same. The food portions are large, so I recommend not eating all your bread and saving some for later. We got the Roasted Turkey and the Roasted Lamb sandwiches (both come with cold meat, that can be warmed upon request). The sandwiches are large, and come with a side. The side salad is very, very light on the dressing, and I am considering the pomme frittes for my next visit instead. The turkey comes with a thick slice of Manchego, avocado, and a scrumptious caper aioli, with a generous portion of ciabatta bread. The lamb comes with caramelized onions, avocado, and tomato, also on ciabatta bread. The sandwiches are reasonably priced, but the other entrees on the menu reach the mid $20s, which seem a bit high. This is a nice little spot that my family found in the neighborhood and truthfully, the ambience is what makes this place stand out. The cafe was alright, the employees on that side looked distressed. I even heard one of them complain that the microwave wasn't working properly, which concerned me. I hope that the microwave is solely used to heat up pastries and not for their main dishes. I ordered an iced chai latte and I did not taste the chai at all (I think they forgot and it's a $1 extra for chai). Nonetheless, the iced coffee still tasted good. The deli/market side was my favorite because the staff was friendlier. It being our first time dining here, one of the staff named Max was kind enough to reach out to my family if we needed anything and explained the back story of Julienne. It was the highlight of our day because he was so kind and introduced us to the delicious pastries. Zero stars for their rudeness, attitude, and for "losing" my reservation. I had the feeling they wouldn't have lost it had I looked like the type of clientele that they would preferred to have dining at their restaurant. I spoke with a lady who answered the phone and who said I was in luck as they had cancellations. I made a reservation with her for afternoon tea. Surprisingly, when I showed up for it, they had nothing down under my name and had a very snotty, condescending, sorry-not-sorry attitude about it, not even offering to find me any table with at least the regular menu, if not the tea menu. I love supporting small businesses but this one just left a horrible impression with me. We ended up going to Radhika, which was much more delicious, inclusive and welcoming. read more

A quaint little café in San Marino. The ambiance is open and airy with outdoor patio seating. A bit confusing as to whether this is a take out or sit down restaurant. You are able to order sandwiches and salads from one counter while a separate counter serves as the location to order hot food or food you would want warmed up. A separate dessert counter is available also. The dishes were tasty and used fresh ingredients. The soup was particularly flavorful and soothing. I have a friend who adores Julienne. It is her destination lunch spot when taking out friends. It is also her celebration lunch spot. We like to arrive early to deal which is the only way I can cope with the no-reservation system. Now that I go on work-day lunches, I don't even try to come on weekends. She is the one who introduced me to the Parmesan crusted swordfish that comes with silky mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a cream sauce. It is lovely cooked fish, perfectly moist though heavy, with the cream sauce. The other hedonistic dish is the creme brulee french toast, with a bruleed top, creme anglaise, and berry coulis. When I'm not feeling so indulgent, I usually order one of their entree salads and have had good lunch with many of them. The warm chopped salad is nicely done with grilled chicken and roasted vegetables. The tuscan meatloaf was delicious with a chunk tomato sauce and lots of mustard seeds. read more

But from my observance of other tables, exceptional service is par for the course. You'll notice after a cursory glance, that about 98% of the patrons are female. Located in an affluent neighborhood this is the restaurant to find "Ladies Who Lunch". =D The decor is upscale rustic, but even with a buck head mounted in the interior there is still a feminine touch especially in the Gourmet Market. Even in inclement weather the roof provides enough coverage from the elements and heaters overhead raise the temperature to a comfortable level. If lowly items such as the iced tea and the complimentary slices of bread are commendable then you should come to a realization that absolutely everything served here is outstanding. The iced tea stands out because it exudes such a wonderful tea fragrance with subtle fruit flavors, no sugar is needed for enjoyment. The slices of bread provided is no ordinary raisin bread. It is studded with bits or rosemary which provides a pleasing aroma that combines quite well with the sweetness of the raisins. If you see something that catches your eye, just order it you won't be disappointed. I was very disappointed and sad with my most recent experience at Julienne. I used to come here before the pandemic and it was always very crowded with many people waiting in line for a table. Now, there are many empty tables. Customers have to go inside to order your food (I waited for a while at the counter before the waiter would tend to me) and then a waiter will bring the food to your table. Customer service definitely was not up to par! Many tables were not cleaned after use; I saw multiple customers having to clean their own tables before sitting down. Food was so so! Came for brunch on a Monday morning at 10am. after a friend strongly recommended this place. He hyped it up so much that I didn't even bother to look this place up on yelp. I ordered the Parmesan crusted potato with poached eggs and topped with pico de gallo. Just reading the description sounded wonderful. When the dish came out, the presentation was absolutely beautiful. However, the taste was even more incredible. Those mashed potatoes mixed in with the parmesan cheese then seared on a pan for a crusty outer texture was something I've never experienced before. Just the mild taste of cheese soaked into the fluffy potatoes were so heavenly awesome. I can't wait to come back and try their waffles and french toast! Our table was pretty small but that's because we told them to cram us in since we didn't want to wait too long. This is what my GF and I ordered: Roasted Lamb Sandwich: Pretty darn good. The sandwich came with lots of avocado and caramelized onions which I loved. The lamb wasn't too gamey which was perfect. Overall, pretty good sandwich but I wish the bread was toasted or even better warm the whole sandwich itself. It came with a side salad that I didnt care about. Green Omelette: My GF's dish. She was pretty disappointed and I agree. It was pretty bland and the only thing that gave it flavor was the side salsa. It came with lots of avocados, broccoli, asparagus and cheese. I would order this again if they would season it! Creme Brulee French Toast: Definitely the best dish we tried. Rich and creamy french toast. I can't believe I didn't know about this place until now! It's a super CUTE, quaint, and cozy restaurant. Perfect for brunch or a light lunch with friends or a date! Outdoor seating is really nice when it's sunny outside. When my friends and I arrived, there was only indoor seating available so we got a table inside. I felt like I was in a French library! There were bookshelves with old books along the walls, a huge mirror, paintings on the ceiling, etc. I absolutely loved the ambience. I had the sandwich with roasted lamb with caramelized onions, avocado, tomato, and basil aioli ($12.50). It was delicious! I thought the lamb was a little dry though, but overall, it was one of the best lamb meals I've had. I'm personally not a big fan of lamb, so for me to get a lamb sandwich and like it, says a lot. It also came with a petite salad which I loved! I really liked the vinaigrette dressing on it! They also gave us complimentary rosemary raisin bread which was amazinggggg. We asked for more because it disappeared so fast. Service was also terrific! Our waiter kept refilling my lemonade nonstop. I never had to ask for more. :) Inside, they also have a market and bakery, reminded me of the one at Joan's On Third. Julienne is such a cute restaurant. I love the European feel and the ambiance here. I've had this restaurant bookmarked for a while because I love breakfast and they were so highly reviewed! But the one day I had time to try it out, I missed their breakfast by a few minutes! :( So I decided to try their lunch, which was basically soup, salad, and sandwiches. Parking here is very limited. There are several spots just in front of the restaurant or a small lot to the right of it. I got lucky and found a spot directly in front of the host, hehe. The menu is interesting. (To be honest, I just laughed at the $40 salad on the lunch special menu...maybe I'll try that when I'm old, rich, and fat). The spinach salad was really good. I love their vinegrette dressing, too. The quiche was good, but not something I will order again. I tried the gazpacho (chilled) because I love avocado..and the best part about it was the avocado. Service was very attentive. Julienne is a very quaint café with European flair. It's perfect for small groups and considered one of San Marino's small treasures as it's been in the same location since 1985 and grown throughout the years. They offer breakfast, lunch and Saturday brunch as well as catering to go options in their Gourmet Market. Monday through Thursday, they do offer an "Intermission" menu which is from 10:45AM - 11:30AM (after breakfast and before lunch). One of my friends from work took me here for my birthday lunch a couple years back and I ordered the Baby Spinach salad with roasted beets, candied walnuts, chevre, with citrus honey vinaigrette, which was full of flavor and refreshing. My friend ordered an open faced sandwich. Since our waiter knew we were celebrating my birthday, he gave me two large cookies to take back (free of charge). Awesome. :) At the bottom of their menu, they gently remind you to watch your children and not to speak loudly on your cell phone. The outside and interior are vintage in appearance, which should have warned me about the higher prices here (~15 for any breakfast meal). The food here was excellent though overall, especially for their popular Creme Brûlée French Toast. Probably my favorite French toast I have ever tried, it is warm And melts in your mouth. They also have free bread and jam in the beginning which was also good. The one dish we tried that fell below the mark was their Green Omelette. It was a little too healthy, with more vegetables than eggs (3:1 ratio) and the flavor depended highly on the cheese on top. Would definitely recommend this place for their Creme brûlée French toast. I took my Mom who was in town from Colorado for lunch, and the staff and "manager" were extremely rude! Stopped here for late lunch while in San Marino looking through antique stores. This place seems sooo European. It's in an old historic building that has the original walls, tile, counters, bathroom. They also have a gift store/bakery that was amazing. The cookies looked delicious, although we refrained from sweets. Lunch was okay, nothing really special, but the place is so great I even forgive them the food. At least it seems very light and clean, not too much salt. Diane had a cup of onion soup that was very cheesy without croutons in the soup, a piece of quiche and a slice of melon. The quiche had a slightly weird flavor, wasn't like what you would expect. It was darker than usual, not salty at all, and had some spice that was unusual, maybe thyme or marjoram. Can't say I loved the quiche. I had the chicken salad, which was really just that -- big chunks of chicken with a few greens, chopped celery and pieces of dried apricot, in a light dressing. A very nice coffee shop in the neighborhood. They have a grocery/boutique market inside with things are nicely arranged. The iced tea I got was plain. I wasn't too excited about the soup. But the foods overall are decent. The outdoor seatings are nice and spaced out. I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time now, because sometimes, you just gotta brunch, ya know?! Not to mention, this restaurant was apparently famous for its ultra sweet and fatty concoction of the Creme Brûlée French Toast. After hearing that, I bookmarked this as a must-try. However, after turning this must-try into a have-tried, I'm afraid this place has become more of a no-go. If you're craving for fancy brunch on a beautiful weekend morning but don't feel like hauling yourself all the way to LA for some classy yet pretentious fare, then by all means, make a stop here. My boyfriend and I waited for a good 35 to 40 minutes before getting seated and were anxiously hoping that the food was going to be worth the wait. Be forewarned: they stop serving the breakfast menu at 11AM, so if you want to get the full brunch experience, make sure you get on the waiting list before 11AM. We shared the Creme Brûlée French Toast and the Toasted Croissant with Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese and Chives (seriously a long name). When it comes to the Creme Brûlée French Toast, I'm afraid some Yelpers are on the dot when they say that this dish is basically a glorified bread pudding. Not to say it wasn't tasty, it just wasn't as AMAZEBALLS as what some other Yelpers were saying. It was as thick as your typical brick toast and topped with a crunchy sugar crust and swimming in a pool of strawberry sauce and creme anglaise. The Toasted Croissant with Scrambled Eggs and Smoked Salmon was mildly appetizing, though nothing special. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed this and finished his half, while I nibbled and pecked at it slowly. The salmon didn't really taste smoked, and seemed like little, cooked salmon chunks which were scattered across a bed of bland scrambled eggs. Since there aren't too many restaurants that serve brunch in the SGV, unless you count dim sim, Julienne is a place to try. The menu is ample, with a wide variety of choices to choose from. Lesson learned: just don't be fooled by a dish just because it looks and sounds pretty. read more
