Ok... at one time there was a K&W in Chapel Hill, that made southern style food. The food was freshly made and good. That one closed so I was happy to find this one Raleigh! Umm... looking back I really wish I had kept thinking they all had closed. When we arrive it's about 5:30-6pm so I'm thinking dinner time so everything should be great! Half the food bar is empty. No salmon, no baked chicken and they said "we aren't making anymore tonight. Wait what?... it's 6pm and u close at 9?.... Ok! Macaroni & cheese looked like it was the day before and warmed up. No candied yams or this is the South!!.. NO sweet tea oh we're not making any more, I'm sorry. Well so was I for coming here. When restaurant is over half empty, always turn around and leave. The rolls were hard. Only 3 different desserts. I must say the strawberry shortcake was good. Prices are fair. Moderately clean and they do have someone in the dining area to ask patrons if they need anything. Ordinarily I'd recommend K&W without a doubt, but after this visit. I've been here three times recently. I enjoy the vegetables especially. I've been charged three different prices for the same food ranging from $8-$15. The kale salad is a winner as is the potato salad. Both could use less dressing however. The beets are on point and could use some orange zest for a flavor pop and color. The pies are a change of pace for me and very well done for cafeteria food. Eating at this K&W reminded me of going to Sears. Years of neglect turned what was once a fine establishment into a slowly declining shell of what it once was. It made me really miss the old K&W in Cameron Village, which unfortunately did not survive the pandemic, but was an order of magnitude better than this K&W. With the exception of the roast beef, which was good, everything on the serving line appeared to have been sitting around for a while and tasted as bad as it looked. My cuban chicken with black bean salsa had clearly been in the warmer tray for way too long. The accompanying black bean salsa was a gloppy, disgusting mess. The macaroni and cheese was inedible. If these dishes had been freshly prepared they would have been very good. I want to give a shout out to our server, who asked to be called "Knucklehead". I was visiting this location specifically for the Sweet Potato Pies, but the lack of professionalism that I (& some of the other customers beside me) experienced was disgusting. They opened today at 11AM, but I was in line at 10:45am. Once they let us in, about 10 of us headed to the area that holds the cakes & pies. The table had about 4-5 desserts total, so a lot of us were standing around waiting to be helped. Several staff members walked by us a few different times without acknowledging us. No one stopped to say we'll be with you or even a hello. Finally, the cashier goes to the register and I ask her "are the pies on the tables the only pies available?" And she responds very nonchalantly "yeah for now" as if I was bothering her. Then, another customer beside me asked her if she could find out how long it will take for the others to be ready, the cashier responds "I mean I can go back there and ask Ms. Nora" but she doesn't move. Finally, a gentleman comes and tells her we can go through the line, place an order for the dessert of our choice and come back to pick it up or wait on it. So, we walk through the line. Then, the cashier tells us, "oh y'all don't have to stand in line." Anywho, as we're waiting on the pies to come out the oven, another staff member (a woman) wearing a red shirt & straight hair comes up and talks to the cashier - but loud enough for myself and other customers to hear - and says "nobody better not try me today, because I wish somebody would say something smart or interrupt me. If they want pies they can go to Walmart where they have a table full of them." And I responded "I don't want a Walmart pie." Needless to say, they were rude and unprofessional to customers spending money in an establishment that's helping to keep the lights on in their business. The pies are good, but never good enough to tolerate an experience like that! I will not be returning, but I will be sharing my experience where it counts. read more

Straight up trash. First and foremost is the horrible service. My wife called yesterday to ask about making a minor change to the order, and the person on the phone was extremely rude and told her to call back later. She called again this morning, and the person was just as rude. Then there's the food - we just threw away their stuffing and Mac and cheese because it tasted so bad. The green beans had no flavor. The mashed potatoes are thin. The gravy has no flavor. And the turkey is just some steamed lunch meat. The rolls are good though. Instead of a Thanksgiving feast, we're trying to get some Boston Market. I see why they're shutting down left and right, and good riddance. read more

I had the worst meal out that I have ever had today. I have eaten here before, and food was okay. Today, they had Chicken Francisco. I was so looking forward to it, as San Francisco Chicken from K&S ( K&W bought them out) was my all time favorite. Unfortunately, this was awful. The rice tasted like instant, and was mushy and flavorless. The Chicken tasted like it had come to them precooked and frozen. The sauce looked like cheese, but tasted like raw flour. The only good part was the broccoli. And, to add insult to injury, that rice which was part of the dish with K&S, is considered a vegetable, so they charged me for it! I ordered baked spaghetti thru door dash and it never arrived so I called K&w and it was marked as customer puckup. I said I'm not picking it up and they told me to call door dash which I did and DD marked it as a customer pickup. Crazy cause the theme of their business is food delivery. I re-ordered the baked spaghetti and I think they just re-heated the original spaghetti as it was so over cooked, more so than I've ever gotten. Will not order from K&w again. read more

I was reminded of why I stopped patronizing this place when I went to pick up my Sunday dinner today. I wanted beef liver, and I know they don't cook it until you order it and you have to wait, but today's wait was ridiculous. I waited for over 30 minutes for my liver. Had it not been for a former neighbor who took it upon himself to check on my food and serve up my to go order, I would have walked out and left it there. I probably should have because for once the liver is not good. It's over cooked, hard, and lacking seasoning. The rice and green beans are okay. I am disappointed. Not only was the service bad (I couldn't get anybody to check on my food or get a manager), but the food wasn't good either. They need to bring back the take-out station so at least you know someone cares about your order. Stick a fork in them. They may not be done, but I'm done with them. read more

I've been eating in K&W cafeterias for over 50 years, since my university days. This version was excellent with delicious foods, served at the right temperature and in copious amounts. The legendary country style steak was perfect. The place was clean and the service was all I could ask for. I highly recommend it. read more

I am very disappointed with most restaurants I visit and prior to 2022, this restaurant was not good - just read the reviews from before 2023 - they are BAD. But, I have visited the restaurant regularly in March of 2023 and found the food to be excellent and the restaurant to be very clean. While the prices have increased, the food has gotten much better. I had the country style steak with white rice, glazed carrots, broccoli with cheese, coconut pie and tea - which was simply delicious. I highly recommend this location at Tower Shopping Center. A cafeteria-style restaurant with 5 Star food quality which is comparable to the K&W Restaurants from the 1960-1980's: this place is a HIDDEN GEM so give this restaurant another try - I believe you will really enjoy the food. By the way, since the restaurant has improved there is actually a line of patrons waiting to go through the serving line - just like the old days when cafeterias were popular. read more

I decided to check this place out for the first time and I can't say I was a fan of it. The only reason why I'm giving it to stars is because the service was friendly and all the workers including my waiter Donald were really nice. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered a to-go plate of the turkey with dressing and as I was eating it I found a piece of paper mixed I the turkey. I don't know if they used lunch meat or where the paper came from but it grossed me out and is highly unsanitary. I can say without a shadow of a doubt I will never eat there again!! read more

One of the best soul food restaurant ever. They have the best chicken and liver, the strawberry short cake is die for. You can't go wrong with candied yams, okra, collard greens, and they senior citizens discounts. It's always packed every Sunday because the whole Raleigh goes there. Last Saturday, I ate here for the first time. They didn't have enough people serving when I was in line. The man who was serving seemed to be in a hurry. Before I could tell him my choice, he got impatient and went to the person in line next to me. The food was delicious and the sweet tea was good. I used to eat at the one in Cameron Village all the time with my great grandma and it was just as good as I remember! I got my childhood favs.. chicken fingers -weren't super fresh but they were still good but I was disappointed they didn't have their homemade bbq sauce! Mac n cheese was great and exactly as I remember, turnip greens were delicious and seasoned very well, 7 layer salad was delicious and you could tell the bacon was freshly cooked, and finally the chocolate cream pie was as delicious as I remember! I definitely had some leftover and for $10 you can't beat it! I got this all to go and the girl who helped me/made my tray was very professional and friendly! I'd definitely go again! read more
