a plate of food on a tray

Eating at this K&W reminded me of going to Sears. Years of neglect turned what was once a fine establishment into a slowly declining shell of what it once was. It made me really miss the old K&W in Cameron Village, which unfortunately did not survive the pandemic, but was an order of magnitude better than this K&W. With the exception of the roast beef, which was good, everything on the serving line appeared to have been sitting around for a while and tasted as bad as it looked. My cuban chicken with black bean salsa had clearly been in the warmer tray for way too long. The accompanying black bean salsa was a gloppy, disgusting mess. The macaroni and cheese was inedible. If these dishes had been freshly prepared they would have been very good. I want to give a shout out to our server, who asked to be called "Knucklehead". He was working hard and doing a great job.

Straight up trash. First and foremost is the horrible service. My wife called yesterday to ask about making a minor change to the order, and the person on the phone was extremely rude and told her to call back later. She called again this morning, and the person was just as rude. Then there's the food - we just threw away their stuffing and Mac and cheese because it tasted so bad. The green beans had no flavor. The mashed potatoes are thin. The gravy has no flavor. And the turkey is just some steamed lunch meat. The rolls are good though. Instead of a Thanksgiving feast, we're trying to get some Boston Market. I see why they're shutting down left and right, and good riddance.

Their roast beef panini is on par with Portillo's a long standing Chicago beef restaurant (IYKYK). I've NEVER had a beef sandwich that was better than Portillo's but Postino you managed to take a hometown classic and elevate it to a point beyond my expectations - if you get this sandwich I recommend getting it on the ciabatta bread versus focaccia. Let's not overlook the tomato soup - it's so rich and flavorful. For a lighter lunch my go to is the tuna panini with broccoli salad. They are known for their boards, I've not had the bruschetta yet but it looks delicious. My favorite board is the hummus. One thing I hate is when a restaurant gives you a big bowl of hummus and not enough pita. That is not the case here, you'll get pita, toasted bread, and a variety of vegetables to scoop up the velvety humus covered in cherry tomatoes, red onion and feta. For date night enjoy a Violet Femme a gin cocktail that tastes as lovely as it looks. The service here is top notch! Everyone is fantastic. I'll have to come back to this review to note the serves names we've had because they have all been exceptional. Now let's talk about the vibe! Postino's nailed the indoor/outdoor feel. Plenty of windows that are open on nice days, plants galore and the decor gives you a cool like rockstar but classy feel. 5 stars doesn't feel like enough.

They also offer a special every day, which a lot of my coworkers really enjoy. I heard a bunch of them rave about the veggie melt, which I still haven't had a chance to try! Anyway, there are your typical deli sandwiches, plus several mediterranean (vegetarian) options, which is great for me! There are a couple sides, like fruit salad, tabouli, and stuffed grape leaves. It's a pretty good deal, with sandwiches around $5-7. A cup of soup is just a few bucks! The NY Strip arrived more than well done, so we told the waitress and she apologized and sent it back to the kitchen. As I was eating the meatloaf, I noticed an off taste and texture. I looked closer and realized it was still pink/slimy/raw! How can meatloaf be raw? It's supposed to be fully cooked first and then grilled. Whoever sliced it from the "loaf" should have noticed it was not cooked before throwing it on the grill! We notified the manager when he came to apologize for the NY strip, so he took the meatloaf back to the kitchen. When the NY Strip came back out, my husband cut into it and it was shiny and purple inside, from top to bottom...absolutely rare. The waitress agreed it was rare and took it back to the kitchen again. When it came out for the third time, it was perfect (third time's a charm, I guess?). The only saving grace was the kind waitress who felt awful about the sub par food. The kitchen put her in an uncomfortable position, but she handled it with grace. We ordered the chocolate torte for dessert and it was very good, but that's the only thing I'd return for.

It came with chive butter, then the host gave us the honey butter. Both were good, I just preferred the chive. I had the roasted turkey French dip which was good, just not memorable. But when we walked in, four people were waiting at the counter with no staff in sight. We stood there for about four minutes until one of the customers told us that only one man runs the entire place. My wife suggested we leave, and honestly, it wasn't an easy decision since we were out of town and had already spent time researching where to eat. We decided to give it one more minute. A guy finally came out and seated our group of six. We even asked if he could manage serving us without getting overwhelmed, and he assured us it wouldn't be an issue. The restaurant is small--maybe room for 15-20 people--and most of their business seems to be takeout. People were constantly coming and going. We placed our order, and it took about 15-20 minutes. The biggest problem: they can only cook three meals at a time because their grill is small. That meant three of us got our food while the other three had to sit and wait. Not ideal. However, the food was excellent--rich flavor, great quality, and clearly the reason their takeout business is booming. Just a heads‑up: "fried rice" here means plain rice. No vegetables, no egg. Those cost extra. They included taxes when calculating for tips.

We showed up early with our 1.5 year old daughter and they were able to seat us immediately. The area felt spacious, although that could be due to the fact that it wasn't super packed inside. The short rib was tender and flavorful, and sat on top of a biscuit (what's not to love here?!) - horseradish hollandaise was the perfect touch as the horseradish pairs nicely with the beef. The chicken & waffle sandwich was the best guilty pleasure! Waffle crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, chicken breaded and fried with a nice crunch, and a nice hot honey syrup to go alongside -- wish this had a little more heat. We came in today with reasonable expectations after finding the restaurant online and seeing mostly positive reviews. We ordered several items to share as a family: broccoli cheddar soup, a French dip sandwich with green beans, and poutine fries. Unfortunately, the broccoli cheddar soup was very bland and lacked seasoning. We had a few bites and ended up leaving the rest. The French dip was the standout of the meal. While the meat itself was a bit dry, dipping it in the au jus made it the most enjoyable and edible item we ordered. The poutine fries were disappointing. They were very basic and didn't resemble what I would expect from poutine--more like prepackaged frozen fries that had been deep-fried. We didn't finish them and left most behind, though we still paid for them. Our child wouldn't eat any of the food, so we ordered the fried ravioli appetizer, hoping it would be similar to versions we've had elsewhere. Sadly, that was another letdown. Although we were told there was no breading, the texture suggested otherwise. This was the one item we did send back. I wouldn't recommend this location for anyone with food allergies or sensitivities, as much of the food appears to be made from frozen or prepackaged items. That said, our server was absolutely wonderful--the highlight of the visit. She was kind, attentive, kept our drinks refilled, and genuinely made us feel welcome. Her sweet demeanor and constant smile were honestly the reason we didn't complain more at the time. While I wouldn't return for the food, I might consider stopping by again strictly for drinks during a sporting event. Otherwise, this just wasn't the dining experience we were hoping for.
