I was genuinely disappointed with my recent experience at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant. The service and food quality fell well below the standards I had experienced during previous visits. Our meals took considerably longer than expected to arrive, and the quality was noticeably lacking. From the beginning, our server appeared impatient, and when we politely asked for a few additional minutes to review the menu, we were met with subtle but noticeable attitude that made us feel as though we were inconveniencing them. The most disappointing aspect of our visit was feeling rushed. Immediately after we finished our last bite, our server cleared not only our plates, which is completely understandable, but also our drinks, napkins, and other personal table items before asking whether we had finished or were ready for the check. Meanwhile, other tables were allowed to continue enjoying their meals, conversations, and drinks without interruption. The difference in treatment left us feeling undervalued as guests. Hospitality should make every customer feel welcome and respected, especially when they choose to spend their time and money supporting a business. Kabuki is a chain of Japanese restaurants. I've been to the one at the Collection in Oxnard 3 or 4 times now. The food is made to order and very good. They have a nice selection of items for every taste. I went there recently with friends from Brazil who don't like sushi. They were very happy to find Ramen and teriyaki chicken on the menu. Service is quick and friendly. The staff are very attentive and helpful. The ambiance is casual and quiet. You can eat inside or outside. Prices are reasonable and the portions adequate. read more

Kabuki is the place to go if you are feeling like you want good Japanese food. Especially since there aren't that many other Japanese restaurants around the area. The service was decent and we got our food relatively quickly. The foods itself was yummy, but their portions are tiny for the price. Their appetizers were decent and although had a nice presentation, the amount given was lacking. The shrimp krab udon pasta was definitely the star of the show. It was savory, creamy, and the noodles were al dente. It just lacked amount. I was sharing with another person, but if I just ate this, I won't feel content after. The chicken and shrimp, veggies tempura had a lot of bang for your buck though since it also comes with a side of soup, salad, and rice. Everything about it was also delicious. 2 years later, and so much has changed in the most unexpected way! Kabuki happens to be my in-laws' favorite spot in Ventura County, so it was no surprise this would be our first dining destination to visit. For appetizers, we started with the Yellowtail Carpaccio and the Chicken Wing Karaage. Pleasantly, really surprised with how both turned out! The carpaccio was drenched in a spicy, yet refreshing ponzu sauce with perfectly sliced yellowtail pieces. I've had chicken karaage before, but never have I ever had chicken WING karaage. What is karaage? It is a Japanese cooking technique where the protein or vegetable uses potato starch versus flour or beer batter (American fried chicken). The karaage wings were crispy and light to the flavor, as the flavor comes from the potato batter itself. As for entrees, I shared a variety of rolls and the BBQ Short Beef Ribs. Though the short ribs could have been marinated a bit longer for more flavor, the ribs were tender enough to happily chew through. I'm typically skeptical with albacore, but the sound of garlic crisps on top of a raw roll with the already favored spicy ponzu sauce sold me. I went for the Albacore Crunch Roll and was not disappointed! Note: though this roll claims it is served with crab, it's actually imitation crab... which was disappointing, but not unforgivable. TIP: I highly suggest coming during happy hour, which runs from Monday to Friday, 3PM- 6PM and would suggest signing up for their reward program. Points can easily rack up, but cannot be redeemed for happy hour items. read more

We were looking for a place that was open for late dinner on Friday night and decided to walk around the Collection and figured sushi would be a good option. It was busier than I would've expected at 9 PM. It took a really long time for us to even get our waters. We started with the truffle tuna nachos. The wasabi sour cream didn't have a strong wasabi flavor so kind of just tasted like weird sour cream. I would've liked more fish since it felt like I was mostly eating chips. - Lava Roll: If you're looking for something more filling, this is the way to go. Nothing particularly special about it. Just tastes like any other tempura fried roll with lots of sauce. - Hamachi Sake Roll: This was definitely very unique. I don't think I've had asparagus in my sushi before but it added a super nice crunch. The truffle ponzu was also an interesting take on truffle but paired nicely with the fish. I liked how much fish there was. This roll was really refreshing. Overall this place isn't bad and the presentation is nice, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. It's pricey for what you get and aside from the hamachi sake roll, everything else on the menu looked pretty standard. The menu did have lots of non-sushi options so maybe those are more worth it. We went to Kabuki with my 8 year old daughter's birthday this week and had a very frustrating experience. We arrived before 6pm, and although half the restaurant was empty, were told it was 10-15 wait. We assumed they only used 1 half of the restaurant on weekdays or something, but there was an open area, as well as a table needing cleaning but sitting open on the active side. We waited 15 minutes and finally said we would leave and the hostess apologized and sat us. It was another 40 minutes before our server even got us water or took our order. I complained to the manager and he apologized, but did nothing else. We finally received our food and everything was "pretty good", nothing was really "great". What was very hard to accept was our server had an attitude the entire time, and really did nothing to improve our poor service. The manager didn't even bother to offer us a free app, or beer or anything to make up for the abysmal service. We will not be back. So disappointing. read more

I have to admit I'm not the biggest sushi fan, but 1) they have a happy hour from 3-6 Monday thru Friday 2) they have non sushi items on the menu and 3) my husband loves sushi, so we both win, a rarity in a relationship. I had and loved the sesame chicken and the fried gyoza dumplings. My husband had the California tempura sushi and the dynamite roll, which I tried, and I have to admit was pretty darn delicious, especially considering I don't typically like sushi. Unfortunately, the service was lacking. My husband really wanted another ramekin to put sauce in and a little wasabi. We tried to flag down our waitress several times, but she was either busy taking another order, didn't notice us trying to make eye contact, or disappeared altogether for a lengthy time. We managed to flag down another waiter, when my husband was almost done with his sushi, and finally a little wasabi and another ramekin was brought to our table. We actually came back like a week or two later and the above scenario happened again, except we finally flagged down our waitress, and she said she would bring us out some wasabi, and then she forgot about us and never did. The food is pretty good here and the happy hour prices are a good deal, but the service is lacking, unfortunately. For goodness sake, if you go here, know everything you want to ask upfront or the waitress/waiter may never return again! And p.s. allow 10 minutes to flag someone down for the check. read more

My favorite Japanese resteraunt in Oxnard. This place is truly a gem. The location is amazing with so much to do since it is located at the Collection. They also have a bar which is a plus. I've been here to many times to count now so I'll sum up some favorites. The sushi and ramen here are so good! I've had multiple rolls and they're all good. It's all fresh and the quality is great which is very important to me, especially with sushi. The Spicy Miso ramen is hands down my favorite dish here. The flavor is so complex and the noodles are the best part. A must try if you love ramen. The appetizers are very good such as the mixed tempura and gyoza. The yakisoba is good. So is the fried rice. The terekayi salmon is another good dish here as well. In all, don't hestitate to try this place if you haven't already. read more

Great place to dine in after my friends and I had our escape room experience right across the street! This restaurant in the Collection is just one of the many to choose from in this diverse plaza! It was only a 10 minute wait for our party of 6 on a Saturday afternoon/early evening. They still let us order off of the lunch special menu with 10 minutes to spare from the 4pm cutoff mark. So good thing to note they do still offer their lunch special prices on weekends too! I got the sushi platter and it was delicious and very filling. My friends also enjoyed the chirashi bowl as well. They also have some teriyaki chicken options and other non-sushi options for the pick eaters/non-sushi fans in your party as well, so a very diverse menu to choose from! It was so cool listening to all the different languages spoken at the restaurant (English, Spanish, Korean, and some Japanese), it's definitely a different experience than being tucked away in a booth. It really makes the difference to the ambiance of the restaurant. It's a nice feel to the atmosphere and makes You forget You're in a major shopping center. Ever since I went to Kabuki in Las Vegas, I always try to stop by and eat here when passing by Oxnard :) Sometimes the flavor of the Curry Ramen can be slightly different, but I guarantee if You ask for their Sriracha and mix it, it will go a long way!
