New York is important to us all but then again so are modernist surrealists like Frida Kahlo so I decided to do a search and I found the most amazing chandelier .... A chandelier I could live in, so I went and sat at the bar & took it all in. Jorge the bar master made everything great with the way he explained the cocktails and was able to recommend them. The Diego I chose and was so happy I did because like Frida and Diego it was a fantastic surprise spice layered with deep amounts of alcohol and then a new honey lathering. Great job. I came here for my first time last year and came back this year for Valentine's Day 2020. Ambience, service, and food/drinks were top notch! From the dangling chandelier, to friendly staff, to finger licking food and drinks; this was definitely a great dining experience. For appetizer, I ordered prawns, guacamole, and octopus. Entree, I ordered lamb shank. Prawns were massive, tasty, and cook to perfection! The shells were peel off already which is just the way how I like to eat my prawns haha. Octopus was also delicious and cooked to perfection! Lamb shank came with a side of soup and veggies. Delicious! Drink, I ordered ez which tasted like the glass was rimmed with a mixture of salt and sugar. Super yummy and highly recommend! Just ok. The food was pretty good but there was just so much of a rush despite the fact that we had a reservation. We were there for exactly one hour and the waitress was trying to rush us out. If you set your drink or fork down they try to grab your glass and plate and rush the check. It was extremely annoying. We spent nearly $400 for dinner for 3 ppl so I will definitely not be back there for that hurry up and leave treatment. Also they advertise a happy hour at the bar but the happy hour drinks are not on any of their menus and you have to ask for them specifically. Service is just all over the place. read more

Came here for a Sunday brunch. The decor was very pretty, it doesn't scream south of the border. I kind of wish the decor had a bit more Mexican design elements. The dining area is great for groups because they can just stick the tables together that are in rows. It wasn't too busy around 2PM. I'd say about 30% occupancy. The space is large enough so you won't feel cramped. We started with the guacamole with black garlic and ancho chile paste. It was so tasty and I liked how they sprinkled some type of chile spice on the chips for added flavor. I think the guacamole could use more lime juice but that's easy to fix, just ask for extra side of lime. The guacamole is a must order item for sure. I chose the huilatcoche omelet and it was very flavorful. I'm not into massive amount of cheese in the omelet so it was perfect. The egg was fluffy and well seasoned. The filling isn't your typical omelet filling. It has corn, epazote, racqueson cheese and even squash blossoms inside. It also came with roasted potatoes with grilled onions and poblano peppers. If you're looking for a different omelet experience, this is it. We also ordered the shrimp tacos. The tacos were small, albeit there were 3, which was disappointing for the price of $24. It did come with some kind of soup, tasted like Mexican version of minestrone and a small bowl of salsa verde which had a nice kick. The tacos were good though and filled with plenty of shrimp. Overall the service and food were great. I'd give it 5 stars if the prices were slightly lower. However, I think I'll return to try different dishes they offer because the ingredients are fresh and I'm pretty sure I'll get a craving for their guacamole at some point! read more

Last night I was having some drinks with a business friend when we decided we were hungry so let's go eat. No idea what we had a taste for when the idea of Mexican sounded great. A quick yelp search and Kahlo was near by and the rating was solid. So off we went the restaurant is very nice inside and we were greeted by a very pleasant hostess. Our waiter Rafael was the closer of the night he was attentive , funny and made some amazing suggestions as we were overwhelmed on what to order. So he took over and everything listed on the picture of our bill I would highly recommend. Overall the dinner, ambiance, spicy margarita, chocolate dessert and his service were all outstanding. My friends and I had a great reunion meal at Kahlo. We'd made a reservation, but the restaurant had several tables still available on Friday evening. The decor is gorgeous, with a giant chandelier in the center of the space. The margaritas were good, and they had some spicy options with chili salt, which is my go-to. The kitchen nicely accommodated my friend's hatred of cilantro and prepared the guac without it. The shrimp tacos were bursting with shrimp, and the fish tostada similarly didn't skimp on the seafood. The octopus was cooked perfectly and probably my favorite dish. So do you like me, and make your OpenTable reservation for a weeknight where you can enjoy the ambience before it gets extremely loud, which the space can get due to the tile floors and metal ceilings. Let them pamper you from the moment you walk in down the small hallway with bouquets of roses along the floor and romantic candlelight getting you in the mood for something sexy special and spicy. With a rez made on Open Table, I came in with my man friend on a recent rainy Tuesday night and were immediately attended to in that perfect blend of maître d' and "we really want you here!" vibe. Just a few guys on duty but they seamlessly wrangled coats, umbrellas and seating. It was a fun lead up to the plush seating along the walls. We took a seat at one of the side booths that have chairs facing across them. Both seating size whether the chair or the booth were cozy comfy. The menu is brief, see my attached photo, but every damn thing we tried was stupendous!! First of all yes you must start with the guacamole. I am a bit of a wussy puss when it comes spice, so we had the least spicy flavor. Be careful, it comes with the onion sprinkled on top which you may want to ask on the side. Quite delightful were the three small tuna tostadas. The balance of flavors was unusual yet perfectly acidic creamy and meaty. Three seems so small when I saw it but it was strangely filling due to rich taste. All that umami! My compatriot preferred the shrimp tacos, but for me they were a little bit average. I think it's a flavor point issue. But definitely at the price of under $17 for each of our plates, no complaining there! My dining companion is a big drinker and had three large Woodfords on the rock, which I think is why, when we let slip by accident that it was my birthday, which truthfully had been a couple days before but this was finally our birthday dinner together, it was a delightful surprise that when we ordered the chocolate mousse (stupendous and not a blob of wet sticky shit but a perfectly molded mousse... cake?... ) it came with a ROMAN CANDLE! Omg. Yes I was sufficiently embarrassed, but the extremely sweet bartender, Ivan, came over and gave a thorough explanation of the aged mescal shot that he provided for my friend, and a non-alcoholic shot for me. In fact my friend was so enthralled with the complexity of the flavor of the mescal that he and Ivan ended up having a good 15 minute conversation, which then led to some further sampling. I realize that we were fortunate that it was a slow night but that kind of intimate tableside service, where we had so much explained us, made us enchanted and wanted to come back more not only to drink this delicious new not cheap beverage that we had been introduced to (mescal can get $$$!) but to be around these people who are so passionate about their food and beverage. That was the kicker! Passion is a rare thing in the Manhattan restaurant scene. Status and social climbing tend to take the place. That's why I felt a real special experience here and want to come back and enjoy it over and over again. The service was awful, had to ask a busboy to get our waiter so we could order food after sitting down for 15 minutes. The NYC restaurant week menu was fantastic, the guacamole was a really good portion. I got the "Los Cabo's tacos" which were delicious! The Cerviche was small and uninteresting. The chicken was also Small and the veggies I asked for did not come, instead the Vereacruz olives served with another dish did. I joined three friends at Kahlo for dinner on a slow Thursday evening. It took 15 minutes to put a drink order in and another 20 to place an order for starters. Our dinner order was quite simple - all of us were having tacos = three of us the same thing. When our tacos arrived, mine needed to be corrected. I waited for the waitress to come by and let her know. Her response was utter confusion, followed by, "That's my mistake. Do you want me to take it away?" I responded yes, and we all waited for my correct order - after 25 MINUTES of waiting, I went over and asked the manager where my meal was. His response was, "We are really busy, and other people are waiting for their food." When I said I understood that, my party was nearly done with their meal, and I had not gotten mine yet - he just shrugged. When my meal did arrive, it was cold and still wrong. The service staff at Kahlo was absolutely disgusting. Their lack of attention to detail and dismissive attitude towards customers was appalling. This experience has led me to the decision that I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Was definitely surprised to discover this restaurant in no man's land just next to the Hudson yards complex. Located on a quiet street, the inside of this space buzzes with so much energy. Blingy chandeliers line the ceiling, and the energetic music and chatter bounces off the walls. The Mexican offerings are an elevated version- but with all the punchiness of authentic Mexican that I'm drawn to. The elote has the truffle oil finish, The silky mole sauce has all the complexity of an actual abuelita's mole. Had the tuna tostada, very nice, the shrimp scampi, the black and white guac. All were very refreshing and a nice change from traditional restaurants. Don't get me wrong they have that too and the people ordering around us at looked very good as well. My only crtique was the food was a bit salty or had too much lime. Lamb shank - entree with enough meat for 2. Very easy to eat/take off the bone. Flavorful as lamb should be. I went here for a birthday dinner with family (there were 6 of us) on a Saturday night (8pm). The scene is very intimate, with the dimmed lighting to the mellow music playing in the background. The staff is very friendly, they check in on you and are very helpful if you have any questions about the menu (food, drinks, etc). I ordered two sets of the shrimp tacos, fried queso as a side, and the mocktail piña (idr the exact name sorry!). It was all delicious. I could've eaten two more sets of tacos! We tried the guacamole with feta and pepita seeds, and that combo was def an amazing one. A combination between sweet and chunky. We also tried the lobster botanita which I thought had good flavor, but more fruit than anything else..maybe three small pieces of lobster? So that left us wanting more. Additionally we shared the chicken and rice dish, which came w green rice. Very tender and great flavor on the chicken, and the rice was very flavorful as well. Portions are on the smaller side, so sharing is not suggested. The margaritas were strong and a good size, so would return for those alone. Great service, even during COVID!
