Rating based on this being an old school restaurant, expected to be "old" but can bring back memories. Actual rating would be a 3.5 if going purely for ambience, service, food, etc. This restaurant is where Kenny's used to be in the Kam Shopping Center. Hasn't been here for a few years but we were meeting someone in the area and it popped up on Yelp. Parking is adequate, even during busy times cars do go in and out. Place is old and booth seats are shabby, but that's expected. Service is ok. We were seated quickly after showing our ID/vax card. This is a busy place so the servers must work hard. So service was slow. Took 10 minutes to place our order. However I did notice our server also had to greet people and seat them, and answer the phone. She was friendly enough for someone trying to cover tables, and the front. Bus boy was great. He was constantly scanning the tables to clear up the dishes and wipe up the table. Food came out sporadically and this is something that should be timed better. Hubby's food came out way before mine. Food: good to very good. Hubby had the grilled saba. He had tossed salad, it also came with soup. Both were fine. The saba was a surprisingly large piece. Grilled nicely, and he said it wasn't too dry. (Saba of course is not a moist fish.) I had a small order of oxtail soup. This was a winner! There were 3small and 2 medium/large pieces of oxtail. I was expecting less, and thought this was almost as much as a regular order would have! Broth was very good. The peanuts, the maybe 5 that I had were cooked properly and still had a slight crunch. But only 5? The ginger was finely grated, however it came in shoyu. Since I like to add my ginger right into the soup, it made it a bit saltier than I wanted. Next time I will specify shoyu separate. However, overall their oxtail soup is a win! I will order it again now that I know how to do so to my liking. Will definitely return sooner for more oxtail soup. BTW - TIP: Many of you probably already do this, but just in case you don't know, take a photo of your ID with the picture showing but the ID/driver license number under your vax card. So much easier to just pull out your phone to show at restaurants. Have been doing this since last year when they became required for dine in and only one place still made me pull out my ID (early on). Ate @ Kam Bowl on Saturday 4/5/25, early evening. My son got sick about 30 minutes after eating the spaghetti and garlic bread. He was in the men's restroom for one hour and half. When he came out, he was flushed and sweating. He said that his stomach ached, had diarrhea and vomited. I was worried about my son and concerned on what had happened so I reported it to the Kam Bowl staff. I did not wish this to happen to other customers there. I wanted to check if other customers had reported it and for them to check up on it. I had asked for the manager and I was told there was no manager so I asked for the person in charge. I was told there is no person in charge. On top of that , I was told that they could not give out the manager's name. One of the waitresses was calling someone on her cell phone and telling the person on the phone what happened. I assume that it was either a manager or someone with authority. They asked if my son has a food allergy and I told him he does not have one. My son also replied that he does not have a food allergy. They asked me if I wanted a refund, I told him I'm not asking for a refund, I would like to speak to a manager and if anyone else reported that they got sick. They told me there was no one who reported that they got sick from eating the spaghetti and again, they could not give out the name of a manager. They asked me if we were going to seek medical help and they could not do anything for me. I was told that I would need to call the next day for the manager. They did not seem to want to get my name however, I told the waitress who was speaking to me to write down my name on a piece of paper. It did not seem that she wanted to get my contact number so I decided not to give it out either. Again, I was told that if I wanted to speak about this, I would have to call the next day. I mentioned who should I speak to. The waitress replied that I would just have to call the restaurant. I am disappointed in the way this was handled. I will not eat at this restaurant again nor will I recommend it to anyone. They did not care or ask on how my son was doing. I wanted something with gravy and something crunchy. On my way home from errands I decided to jump over one lane and go into Kam shopping center. I used to frequent here as a child but it's been a while. Parking is still free and there's tones of parking. It was easy for me to find Kam Bowl Restaurant. It's right on the outer corner where the old Kenny's used to be. I waited about 5 minutes outside. Only two people allowed in at a time. I was able to see the menu on the wall to the right of the entrance marked "IN". They have separate "IN" & "OUT" doors. Anywho, I walked up and within ten seconds was created with a smile and a hello. I placed my takeout order for garlic chicken-hubby's, pork cutlet-me, and a regular sized oxtail soup- me again. I wanted to try to famous Kam Bowl oxtail soup. So here we go. Hopefully all the food will keep some this will be eaten at work. So I ate the pork cutlet when I got home 20 minutes later. Was still crispy and warm at least. It's hefty so it'll fill you up. The Mac salad is watery though but I'm not a Big Mac salad fan. Later at work I ate the oxtail soup. This is were you go if you want local comfort food and the best thing on the menu is their oxtail soup. You might say what is so special about oxtail soup, well you got to try it to fully understand. Their take on an Asian classic is blending Chinese and Okinawan ingredients. It is light, yet hearty, full of flavor, yet balanced. It fills your belly and warms the heart. Of course adding the ginger to taste is what it is all about. The Japanese way is to put the ginger in the separate bowl and dip you meat in it before eating, but I prefer to load my soup with heavy scopes of the ginger and use the side bowl for the bones. I always order the kimchi and mac salad sides to go along with it. Something about their kimchi is a little different. It is slightly sweet and not overly spicy hot. Adds a nice balance to the soup and the mac salad adds a neutralizer to the whole experience. Now this is not a fancy place at all, but the service is friendly and fast. read more

Tried this place for the first time this morning. We didn't wait long to be seated as the restaurant was empty. According to my husband, the interior is exactly the same as the previous restaurant, Kenny's. Their known for their oxtail soup and me being a fan of oxtail soup, I decided to try it (small portion). I like how there's a small portion and regular portion. My husband was indecisive between the lup cheung fried rice and kim chee fried rice, so he asked our server which one she recommends and goes, "the only difference is one kim chee and the other is lup cheung." Um yeah we can see that, he was asking which one she recommends! LoL! He ended going with the lup cheong with an over easy egg. The menu font is also not your "normal" font. Looks like some type of brick font. Food: For a small portion of ox tail soup, there's a good amount or ox tail. The soup could've had a little bit more flavor and the meat could've been cooked a little longer to get it more tender. The ginger was minced but not enough. It also came with a lot of green onions that covered the top of the soup. White rice was also not that hot. I'm not a fan of lup cheong, so I asked my husband how his fried rice was and he said it isn't as sweet as he thought it would be. He ordered dessert too, a cookies and cream pie looking this. He ate it like it was so good! So I decided to try it and it tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer for awhile already having ice built on the top too. Totally gross. Their oxtail soup and ramen never disappoints our dinner. Hours has extended one hour to closing to 8:30pm. We called at 7:30pm to dash out before they closed, just in time for our weekend dinner. Together with our meal we ordered hamburger with fries. It was a deluxe with thinly sliced tomatoes and onions I'm assuming they used sweet onions than the regular acidic bitter taste of sliced onion that has an aftertaste that won't go away and nicely placed crispy lettuce. If only they had pickles that would've completed their hamburger sandwich. May I say their French Fries are the beat their chef said it's frozen but somehow it tastes like homemade fries. My mom likes Japanese eats but at Kam she'll order their fries and Turkey sandwich or plate when they had it for their special. They have now dine in with social distancing half of their capacity. Counter sitting are taped off. I highly recommend to go early and many eat and stay a bit longer than their stay. Kam Bowl has a very good Oxtail soup that my parents and I like a lot. Their broth is always good, my dad likes to drink it in a bowl, separate from his rice and meat. I like the balance in flavor of the meat and soup. The meat is tender and I know this because my mom can only eat soft foods (she almost has no teeth) and the Oxtail from Kam is tender enough for her to chew. We've gone to other places for Oxtail, and I've found that Kam Oxtail meat is usually the most tender. The price is also very reasonable, I think other than Masa's, Kam has the cheapest Oxtail. Lots of julienned vegetables balanced nicely with a good amount of marinated beef, with generous amounts of creamy macaroni salad and rice. Very satisfying! My mom's oxtail ramen topped it though! Very nicely spiced, usually oxtail soup comes with a side of rice. Having egg noodles really complemented the chopped watercress and the meat on the oxtails! Total with tax and tip was under $30, average these days. Kam Bowl is close enough to work so I can stop by and try more of their local favorites. The small oxtail came with a side of rice (we substituted white rice and got Kim Chee & Regular fried rice) Both were pretty flavorful especially for only having bacon bits inside and no egg. The oxtail had about 4-5 pieces and it soup was delicious. It wasn't oily at all. Overall I'd probably come here again if I was craving oxtail soup. My friend visited this restaurant on June 17, 2024. After dinner, she ate the Pumpkin Spice Pie. She is HIGHLY allergic to many tree nuts, especially walnuts. Unbeknownst to her, this pie had walnuts. It was NOT marked on the menu, NOT marked in the description, not mentioned in the name either. She could have DIED from this. She had a severe allergic reaction, and is barely able to talk. At the very least, the staff could have offered for the pie to be taken off of the bill. They did not do much but apologize. If the staff cannot do anything to compensate her for the inconvenience this has caused, there is a problem with the management of this company. Third time is a charm... There was a sign on the door: "Closed", but they were open! The previous two tries were disappointments because they were closed. Once with no sign on the door. Just emptiness... Confusing... Inside - more confusion. We put our name on the list and waited in front of an unmanned reception table. After a while, someone came to apologize for the short staffing. There were many empty tables, but no one to wait on them. Sad. I had heard that the rough start of this "new" business at the former location of "Kenny's in the Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi" was due to insufficient personnel. However, once seated, we had excellent service and great local comfort food! I had the oxtail ramen and small Lup cheong fried rice. YUM! The oxtail meat was tender and tasty! The noodles were firm and filling! The fried rice had an egg on top which made it complete! I was so happy!!! (Note: My friends questioned my ordering 2 dishes. To be polite, I didn't finish everything and took some home! Then we had dessert later! LOL!) I kept looking at Angel's bacon and wanted it MORE since she said it was CRISPY and she didn't even have to ask for it to be made that way! They just opened January 27th in the old Kenny's in Kamehameha Shopping Center. The layout is about the same as Kenny's. Since they only recently opened, there is a wait during lunch and I would assume during dinner as well. As busy as they are, parking wasn't that hard to find. There is a host as you enter that takes your name and number in your party if the place is full. Wait time is not long at all which is good. Once seated, you have brand new menus to look at. For me, I'm there for their famous World Famous Oxtail Soup. From the orders that I saw leaving the kitchen, most people ordered the Oxtail Soup or Oxtail Ramen. Oxtail in the Oxtail Soup was good but I thought the portion was less than average and it could have used some veggies/mushroom in the dish. You can choose from brown or white rice. The brown rice I ordered was a little hard in one scoop...it was crunchy hard so that was a little disappointing. The server was very prompt with water and utensils. Since they were so busy, she stopped by to let us know our order was coming up since it was taking a little long. This is very understandable since they are busy and new. She was quite friendly when checking up on us during the meal. After your meal, you'll get the check from the server and you walk it up to the front cashier to pay. The accept cash and credit. This review is for the first weekend and I know that they'll slowly upgrade their menu items and staff. I think it's a smart idea to get everything operating smoothly and flowing before overwhelming the crew. The interior hasn't change from the old Kenny's and even saw some of the waitresses from before. The menu was a simple delish one and I really appreciate that they kept the prices really reasonable. To tell you the truth, I had a little hard time deciding what to eat for Brekkie. After seeing Kimchee fried rice walking pass me *drools* I thought to myself.. Hey this is KB and they are known for their famous Oxtail Soup, so no brainer on my first visit to the newest location, Oxtail Soup it is! I was slightly disappointed on the size of the regular portion, but it turned out to be perfect for my appetite and just I remembered, Happy Dance! Also Loved the jar of grated ginger they give you to keep you smiling while chowing down that bowl, sorry Mr. Ox... The service was excellent and our coffees were always full. The food here is so good. It was exactly how I remembered it at the bowling alley back in the day. I had breakfast here Sunday morning with Anthony, Nadine, and Traci. They had staffing problems and the seating process wasn't good. A few customers actually left the restaurant after standing around for a while. People walked in the front door and didn't know what was going on. There was a woman working the cash register in the front. She did not acknowledge any of us that walked in. About 12 people were crowding the waiting area not knowing what was going on. We looked in and there were empty tables. There was a sign in sheet by the register and people just started putting their names down. Finally, one of the guys waiting called one of the servers and asked what the problem was. She explained that whoever did the scheduling didn't schedule enough servers and that they were swamped. They needed to clear the tables and serve the customers that were already seated. Then, they would be ready for us. We were finally seated 15 minutes later. Besides the mishap that happened in the beginning, everything went smoothly after that. We had put in our orders and the food arrived in a timely manner. We didn't have to wait too long for all the food, about 10 minutes. I ordered their famous oxtail soup in a small for $12.95. It was a small but I couldn't even finish it. There was about six pieces of oxtail in the soup, which was a generous amount. It also came with two scoops of rice. The oxtail was tender and the soup was yummy! I dipped the oxtail in my grated ginger and shoyu mix, and it was sheer splendor. It definitely hit the spot. My hubby got the cheese omelette, with the choice meat on the side. He doesn't eat pork, so luckily the bacon was all for me. His omelette also came with hash browns. The bacon and hash browns were both crispy. I was so delighted. I love everything crispy, lol. He also got a short stack of hotcakes. They were light and fluffy. Stopped in this morning at 8a for breakfast no wait it wasn't crowded for a Saturday morning. Interior is exactly the same as when this was Kennys. Ordered the Eggs Benedict -English muffin, Canadian bacon, poached egg and hollandaise (10.95$) and a side of bacon (4.50$/4 pieces) and coffee. They only have 2 choices for juice pineapple and orange. The Eggs Benedict was okay, the eggs were poached correctly and Canadian bacon was pretty thick and tasty. The hollandaise sauce was pretty bland though. The hash brown that came with it was probably pre frozen and fried and it was very greasy so I just had 1 bite. The side order of bacon had 4 pieces, it didn't taste that good and was overcooked. The service was friendly and efficient. Overall it was okay.... if I were to go back I'd try the pancakes. There are tons of choices for breakfast such as pancakes, eggs, all type of breakfast meats and even a "Japanese" breakfast which has a choice of three types of fish, salad, Japanese pickles, rice and a bowl of miso soup. Need a place to eat when your starving? This is the place to go! The reason I say this is that during the "dinner rush", this place was not busy at all. Got parking right in front of the restaurant (used to be Kenny's) and our party of three got seated right away. Everything happened so quickly that I wasn't ready to order when the waitress came over. The menu was pretty extensive and being as hungry as I was, it was hard to choose what I wanted to eat. I wanted to try everything. My boyfriend ended up trying the oxtail soup (of course) because they were known for this. My mom ordered the saimin ($7.95) because she wanted something simple. It's too bad that they didn't offer breakfast all day because I was craving breakfast. I ended up choosing the chicken cutlet ($10.95), which came with either mac salad or tossed salad. I decided to try and go the "healthy" route and choose brown rice and tossed salad. Oxtail soup looked pretty small for $12, but my boyfriend said that it was actually pretty filling. The Chicken Cutlet was over cooked a bit, but still good and the tossed salad came with a substantial amount of lettuce. The waitress asked if we wanted some desert and normally I'd say no, but wanted to try the slice of apple pie she mentioned. Didn't realize that a slice of apple pie was going to cost about $8.00! KAM Bowl opened about 2 weeks ago at the previous Kenny's location in the Kamehameha Shopping Center. The restaurant was full with standing room only waiting to be seated. The hostess in the front asked if we wanted to sit at the counter for faster seating. I forgone the 30 minute wait for immediate service. The menu is small but enough to get a fix with your cravings. Don't be fooled. They are smart as I believe if they had the whole menu it would be crazy to cook all the different foods. They were completely slammed today and one would not know it unless they specifically watched the waitresses being busy. They maintained their friendliness and ability to work together to make the rush livable. The wait for the food was short and the food is good. They have a sign at the door that they are looking for cooks and dishwashers- although they are in need of help - I couldn't tell the difference. I am sure we will be back again! I'm glad that Kam Bowl had taken this spot. Great job to the workers today - Especially "Mary" who was our server and the hostess at the front who helped to wipe tables and take away the plates. (How humbling as I just found out that the hostess in the front that I was referring to is the owner!! She is so down to earth and friendly!
