This is the kind of old school drive inn that falls in line with the likes of Likelike Drive Inn and Flamingos. So, there are some things that are expected. When we came in, there was no one at the front so we signed in and waited. If you didn't know the layout, you would think they were closed Finally someone came after about 5 minutes. She sat us, gave menus and brought 3 waters for 4 people We ordered and the food came quick. We had: 1) 2x Kalua Pig, long rice, Lomi Salmon, and rice special. $15 each. My hubs and son loved it, except that the long rice had too much ginger. 2) Beef Stew- was about $10 and my daughter loved it 3) Hamburger Steak with onions - $12. It was super good. Cooked well but soft!! 4) Ordered a side of fries and it was perfectly cooked (you can tell the oil was clean). Total cost was about $65 with the drinks (a small little pog was about $2-3). Okay I must update my review since I'm the Duke of Kam Bowl now! It's been awhile since they've opened. Service had gotten much better. The waitresses for the majority are also much more friendlier. We do have our favorites that always greet with a smile. The food quality had also gotten much better. The ox tail soup is hot as it should be. The pig feet soup special on Tuesday is delicious! My favorites are the fish. The fried akule is super. You can't find akule served at many places and Kam Bowl does it superbly! My wife and I never dined at Kam Bowl because of the mediocre reviews on Yelp so we waited a couple years to have breakfast here. As we were being seated we noticed the delicious looking Japanese breakfasts on the other tables and a really good looking steak and eggs so our hopes were high that we were going to get a decent meal. Looking at the menu we noticed that the prices were really reasonable but the selection was not huge. I ordered a pork chop and gravy plate and substituted fried rice for the white rice. My wife ordered a single eggs Benedict with scrambled eggs and extra crispy hash browns. Her order came first and her hash browns were soft and cooked on one side only. We sent the hash browns back which is disappointing because her food was hot and she could not wait for them to correct the hash browns because her meal would be cold and soggy. The scrambled eggs were closer to over hard instead of scrambled so my wife was not pleased. The Hollandaise sauce was pretty decent and it was the best part of the plate. My meal came and it looked delicious, a hefty pork chop smothered in onions, mushrooms and gravy with fried rice on the side. The meal barely fit on the plate which made it difficult to eat because the pork chop was tough so food was spilling off the plate while I tried sawing some pieces off. Everything was good except that the pork was tough. It didn't seem to be overcooked, just dry and tough. I must add that the fried rice was very good. Went there for some good Oxtail soup! Our waitress was great! We reminisced of where they were last located which was in Kam Bowl and is no longer in existence to where theyre currently located now in Kam shopping center FKA Kennys Burger House. They seemed to be working with a skeleton crew at 4pm on a Monday afternoon and our waitress was managing very well multi-tasking various jobs very well that she deserved a good tip after receiving our ono meal. The only thing that couldve waited was the bus boy rudly removing our plates and making like it was a task putting it nicely in to his dish cart more quiet. One of the saddest days in my life in Hawaii was the day the original Kam Bowl closed and Walgreens opened in it's place. I remember not knowing what to do and having no perfect alternative. I can't remember exactly but a close friend said, "don't worry they're opening one up in Waimalu Shopping Center", and within a week after opening I remember heading there only to discover that although the recipe from what I hear was identical, maybe due to new pans, a different stove, it just didn't live up to what I had grown accustomed to at Kam Bowl. Needless to say, that forced me to seek alternatives in other parts of Honolulu, which actually led me to discover two other gems that are now gone, Victoria Inn and New Violet's Grill. Well on my last trip back to Honolulu, my dad was excited to tell me that the owners of The original Kam Bowl had reopened and purchased the old Kenny's restaurant and now have their oxtail soup there. I was a bit skeptical seeing that I had gone through this exercise before, however since it was in the same part of town as the original, and also that my grandpa's favorite place was Kenny's, I thought I'd give it a try. Upon arriving early in the morning we were seated immediately by a very friendly staff. The lovely restaurant manager checked on us, just to be sure we were okay. As soon as the waitress returned, we ordered three oxtails. Soup arrived very quickly along with the normal bowl of ginger and hot rice. From the first whiff of the broth to the initial spoonful of that goodness, I knew that lightning had just struck twice! This oxtail soup was everything I remembered. These guys nailed it! Decided to try this place since I pass it quite often. (Kamehameha Shopping Center) They are known for there oxtail soup but I'm just not a fan of oxtail period. We were seated right away and our waitress was attentive. I wasn't digging their breakfast menu, however you are able to order lunch during breakfast time. My son wanted hot cakes but when it came out it, we were served banana pancakes. It somehow slipped my mind and luckily my son wasn't allergic. The waitress came back out to let us know the other lady gave us the wrong plate. She offered the regular hot cakes we ordered but my son had already dug into his banana hot cakes. Bumped into - and "talked story" with - some family friends as they were leaving. We were positioned near the door, so good feng shui (风水), I guess. Verdict: Worth the wait. Highly satisfied! Omgoodness - worst experience ever...nothing about it was good, not the food, not the service, and even the soda was bad. I've never been here before but I thought eh, why not try it out with friends. I ordered chow mien and it just felt like they poured a fistful of MSG in it and it looked sloppy too. Kam Bowl is an old school Chinese - Hawaiian diner. This reminded me of places I would go to growing up with my parents. Not part of my typical rotation of restaurants but we ended up here on a whim and it was everything we expected. I know this place hasn't received a lot of good reviews but if you want to go back in time before yelp, social media and just accept a restaurant for good comfort food, Kam Bowl is that type of place. The interior looks like it hasn't been updated in 40 years; in fact so did the menu and staff. We ordered the oxtail soup and Lup Cheong fried rice. I really enjoyed OD-ing on the fried rice and the soup was great as well. We were early so service was prompt. We decided to come and try Kam Bowl even though there were not to many good reviews. Well.. It was just ok period. We kinda expected a little more but it just didn't deliver. The regular size oxtail soup "failed" the expectation. The ginger wasnt grated enough, the soup was bland, the meat wasn't braised long enough to keep somewhat of the flavor in. Loco Moco hamburger patty was dry and pale, if it had just a little bit more flavor and juicy it would have been better, sunny side egg was perfect, gravy not bad, Mac salad ok. Located at the old Kenny's in Kam Shopping Center. Place holds a lot of people, we couldn't decide where to eat this night and decided on a whim to come here. What this place I know is known for is their oxtail soup. Of course I got that. I got the smaller portion which was perfect. I got it with brown rice to try and be healthier. Came here on a Thursday evening. Wait was not too long, and the customer service was decent (nothing too spectacular). I got the chicken cutlet with brown rice, my friend got the chicken katsu. We were pretty excited that Kam Bowl was opening up again after having such nostalgic childhood memories going there for family dinners and bowling nights. But after going to the newly open location a few times, it's not the same old one it used to be. Although it wasn't at all busy whenever we'd come here for breakfast/brunch, service and food been really mediocre. We've tried the oxtail soup a couple times but it wasn't as memorable as it was in taste back in the day. Tried the mushroom omelette which was good but too yolky and not cooked thoroughly. Side lup cheong had no taste. The banana pancakes was good when you add syrup to give it more taste. Overall, for the past few experiences I've been here since opening, I didn't care for it much other than it's a quick place to get breakfast food aside from mcdonalds in the area. read more

I came here to have dinner with some friends and was excited because I have never been here before. Although reading the reviews made me a bit hesitant, I wanted to still give it a try. I got excited when I saw that they had tan tan ramen on their menu because I loooovveeee me some good ramen!!! Silly me. I should've known that ramen would not compare the least bit to the ramen I have had before from real ramen shops. When I got my saimin (yes saimin not ramen) I was disappointed to see that it looked like something I could've warmed up in the microwave :( there was no creamy tan tan broth that I hoped for so I doused it with tabasco and some shoyu for some taste. We were there til it closed so idk if the staff thought it was ok to play loud clubbing music. I wouldn't return to this place as I feel the food is quite mediocre.
