We had a retiree luncheon here and it went well. The semi private room to the right of the greeter station easily held our party of 17. The room allowed us to easily converse with each other. We took a ling time to order but our waitress was very accommodating. Our food came out rather haphazardly, but you're always at the mercy of the cooks with a big party like ours. I had the chicken papaya soup with brown rice. Pretty solid soup with lots of chicken thigh pieces. For around $15 I thought it was a good deal. We had a big lunch group of about 10 people (half were children). It was busy on a Saturday afternoon. The hostess was nice and seated us quickly at a booth. All the tables and chairs were clean and upholstered without signs of wear and tear. Music was playing, seemed like late 80s to 90s music. Great variety of food. The portions were big like for the tonkatsu ramen bowl. Most dishes were under $15 which is why we picked that spot. A nice step above fast food restaurants but not fine dining. Waitress was kind and patient with our big group. Food was served in about 15-20 minutes. There were high chairs or booster seats available. The booths we sat at did not have any A/C reaching it. It was very warm inside. Towards the back area by the restrooms, the A/C was working well. A fan was on near the hostess desk/cashier but it wasn't reaching the far corners of the restaurant. Ample parking at the shopping center in front and side of the restaurant. Free parking too with 2 kinds of ATMs nearby. Bus stops are near the restaurant too. read more

Wow it's been years since I've tried Kam Bowl since they first opened in the old Kenny's Restaurant location. Forgot what I ate then, but thought it was okay. I gave it another try since I convinced a friend to try a place in the Kamehameha Shopping Center than the usual Tanaka Saimin,& Liliha Bakery etc. The packed parking lot of cars made my friend regret coming here, but as we checked out the other end, and blessed there were 2 opened stalls right in front of Kam Bowl. I may have friends that don't like to try new places but once they do and have a positive impact on them, they will add it in their rotation of the restaurants. This place was one of them. It was a nice atmosphere with the scenery blinds down because of the afternoon sun! It was so beautiful like we're were in another place. Of course with our sweet waitress, our experience got better! It was a nice casual family restaurant to dine in after a hectic day of work! I wanted to try the Kalbi with the two additional choices or the Korean chicken. I decided on the Korean chicken like my friend and was amazed by the taste of the Korean chicken! It really good and was not oily or saucy. It was really packed with flavor and the outside was crunchy! It was pretty good portion and nice size pieces! Well the Korean chicken didn't disappoint! We were full afterwards but were in a good mood, so we ordered desserts too! We got the pumpkin crunch and apple pie. She asked if we want it cold or warmed up ? We both wanted ours cold. We really loved that adobo fried rice!!! Trust me we are Filipinos so we know our way around it. It s great place to have simple eats at a later dining time. We made our way here at almost 9pm on a Friday. The dinner rush was over and we got seated right away in a 3/4 full restaurant. My hubby liked his oxtail soup but wished there were more vegetables inside. However, my son ordered the full adobo fried rice that came with 2 eggs and unordered the mini that came with one. The portions were generous and the flavor was spot on. Make sure you order your egg sunny side and not over easy because I both of our eggs was a little more cooked then we prefer. My other son had the cheese burger and for me it was flavorful because of the had made patty but my son who has a huge appetite only ate half... it also could've been because of the generous amount of crispy French fries included in the meal. A good, standard, hearty bowl of oxtail soup. The sizes are a little smaller than you'd expect though. But everything else is a little over priced. Also, everything comes out warm, never hot. We went in the afternoon so it wasn't as busy yet. Our server, Madeline was very nice and patient. She made our visit very pleasant. The food came out nice and hot. The portion size was just right. My grandson enjoyed his grilled cheese and fries as well as my tonkatsu too. My friend said her teriyaki chicken sandwich was so good, she ate the whole thing so fast it was nice to be able to sit and relax and enjoy a meal. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

I've been dining at this place since the late 60's when it was Kenny's Coffeehouse / Restaurant. It's been Kam Bowl since 2016; an amalgamation of Kenny's and what used to be the restaurant in Kam Bowl a block away. The latter was originally Kapiolani Coffee Shop, located in the Aloha Motors building on Kapiolani and Atkinson. Ah, memories; this tells you how old I am. To me (the new) Kam Bowl hasn't changed all that much in 50-plus years. That's not a bad thing ... We need the "old-time", "classic" diners like Flamingo, Columbia Inn, Kapiolani Coffee Shop, et al to remain in business as they serve local style comfort food. My father and I used to frequent Kam Bowl to get the oxtail soup. Just like the soup at Kapiolani Coffee Shop, the broth at Kam Bowl is thin and clear, what I understand to be Chinese style. Other places offer a darker, heartier broth which I've been told is Okinawan style, like the one from the long-gone Bowling City Coffee Shop (on Alapai St) where I worked as a fry cook in 1970. Why is it that the best oxtail soups seem to be found in restaurants located in bowling alleys? Back to the matter at hand, I met two of my high school band mates for lunch and reminisced over the good times we shared in the 60s. We each had a sandwich and fries and coffee; mine was a BBQ Chicken sandwich that came in a hamburger bun. The time before, I tried the Chef's Salad. The food hasn't changed, and the booths and counters seem untouched by time. The place was filled with diners, even at 2pm. I like Kam Bowl. It's conveniently located and there is ample parking if one remembers to park on the second floor of the parking structure. The food is decent and the prices remain reasonable. read more

THE EXTRA LARGE OXTAIL SOUP IS AWESOME !!! I was really hungry today so I decided to go with the BIG KAHUNA ... and it was BIG. The bowl is regular size but they really pile in the oxtails. I managed to finish it but barely. It comes with four scoops of rice and a mound of ginger. I took out a Club House sandwich for dinner and it was good. First time trying Kam Bowl since we were in town and had a sudden craving for oxtail soup. That day was definitely a hot one, so maybe it wasn't the best time to order a hot bowl of soup, but we did anyway. Since it was our first visit, we were not prepared for the muggy temperature inside the restaurant. They either need to up that BTU or replace the AC system entirely cuz it was WEAK and HOT, and it was 100% not the environment you'd want to be sitting in while eating a hot bowl of oxtail soup! Both the wife and I ordered our own REGULAR size bowls because we agreed we didn't want to share a large. Usually, we'd order a large oxtail and split it, but we didn't have cravings for anything else and we were both hungry. Just warning you, the regular bowl at Kam Bowl, in my opinion, IS A SMALL. It's JUST ENOUGH for an average eater. I honestly wished I got a large, but oh well. Flavor was what you'd expect, but unfortunately nothing extra or exciting enough to drive back for. I do wish we ordered it extra hot because it was more of a warm broth... something to make note of if you're an "extra hot" type of person like me. The service was fast and friendly. The normal type of diner experience you'd expect from a place like this, so I'd give them 4 stars in that department. To conclude this review, I would say that I'd definitely give Kam Bowl another shot since there's so many other dishes to try on the menu. There is an everlasting charm with this place. The food is good, the service is on point, the vibe is what you'd expect when dining with fellow locals from all walks, this place is where you'd go to relax and just be yourself while eating local dishes that never miss. Loco mocos are my go-to when I can't decide, and they have one of the best. Tasty gravy and good patties, and the side mac is a great compliment. I also get their BLTs, which comes with perfectly cooked crunchy bacon. This last visit we couldn't decide on the kim chee fried rice or the adobo fried rice, so we got creative and ordered a side of kim chee with the adobo fried rice and mixed it together. It was delicious. Lots of parking, lots of other great places to check out in the mall, but do go to Kam Bowl and give them your patronage. Support local, and fill your tummy. read more
