Second trip to Kapow Thai for lunch, and yep, they still live up to the name. The place was busy, packed with the lunchtime crowd. My wife and I were working from home and decided to do the classic "quick lunch" move, which is basically adult code for "we're starving and productivity is about to drop." Bonus points: one of my wife's favorite boba spots is in the same plaza, so this outing was strategically optimized for happiness. We'd been here for dinner before, but today was a straight-to-business lunch run: Pad See Ew (Pad C U), Pad Kee Mao, and a bowl of tom yum soup. I set the food down, popped open the containers, and instantly the aroma of those noodles took over the room like it paid rent. My wife was a little tied up with work, but the smell made the decision for her. She jumped in before the noodles could cool down or I could "accidentally" sample hers for quality control. Pad See Ew was exactly what you want it to be: mildly sweet, deeply savory, with those soft wide rice noodles and tender chicken (our pick). Comfort food that gives you a little pat on the back and says, "You're doing great, kid." Then there was my Pad Kee Mao. I took one decent bite and... KAPOW. Flavor explosion. Medium heat? More like "hello, I'm awake now." The Thai chili kicked it up a notch, and suddenly my lunch break turned into a motivational speech. And the tom yum soup. We came in pretty late and we were still able to get sat! The parking lot is a little small, but it's manageable! If you see a long wait don't be discouraged, it's just a smaller restaurant. I would say this isn't really a big party friendly spot, so don't bring 20 people here at once....there isn't enough tables for everyone. You're going to take up the whole restaurant! Food: Chicken Satay - pretty big pieces of chicken, almost like a tender. It was fairly soft, but I do think the taste is plainer than other satays I've had. Scallops - good! Really easy to eat in one bite and good flavor with the mint, garlic, and spicy sauce. Has a kick but is relatively mild. Kao Soi Duck - duck was very soft. Overall, I think taste was lacking a bit here both on the duck and the curry. Nice presentation though. Salted Egg Squid - good flavor on the chili oil and salted egg, especially if you put it on top of their sticky rice. Squid was good too - slightly chewy but nothing too bad. A cozy restaurant with quick and attentive service. It was busy for a Monday at lunch time. For appetizers we ordered the wing of Kapow, por thod (deep fried rolls), and the chicken satay. We enjoyed all the appetizers. The wings were a little on the small and skinny side but they were crunchy and the sweet sauce on them added a good touch. The deep fried rolls were meaty and flavorful. The chicken satay's peanut sauce was very good. For the main dishes we chose the Ka-Pow Sirloin Basil Fried Rice and the Crying Tiger Sirloin Steak and both were perfect in their own way. The Kapow's basil fried rice was fluffy and fragrant. The crying Tiger was accompanied with sticky rice and mixed veggies (lettuce, cucumbers, and carrots). The sirloin on both dishes was tender and seasoned perfectly. We came with a party of 5 adults and 2 kids, and I'd strongly recommend that if you're coming with a bigger group, you arrive right when they open. Seating is very limited, and by the time we were seated, the line was already out the door. That said, it clearly shows the demand for this place, which says a lot. Despite the tight space, the service was great. Because it's a small restaurant, the staff is able to get to every table quickly and efficiently, which we really appreciated. One thing to note for larger groups: the food is not family-style. Everything is à la carte, and I'd say each entrée can realistically serve up to two people at most. With our group size, we had to order several dishes to make sure everyone was covered. Food-wise, we ordered the red curry, pad thai, and fried tofu, all of which were solid and enjoyable. However, I do want to point out one big disclaimer regarding the chicken wings. They felt more like chicken sticks than actual wings. It seems like a full wing was cut in half and deep-fried--so no drumsticks, just half wings with sauce. They were tasty, but if you're expecting traditional wings, this might catch you off guard. Overall, I'd highly recommend Kapow Thai Eatery for smaller parties (up to 4 people max). Anything beyond that can feel a bit cramped and less ideal. I really wanted to like Krapow Thai Eatery, but my recent visit missed the mark in several ways. I ordered the Pad C U and the Kow Soi Duck. The Pad C U came in a surprisingly small portion, especially for the $18 price tag, and unfortunately it was bland and lacked any real flavor. For a dish that's usually reliably comforting, this one was a big letdown. The Kow Soi Duck was also disappointing. The combination of duck and coconut curry ended up feeling overly rich and unbalanced, and the duck itself was fatty, chewy, and had a strong gamey taste. It didn't seem properly cooked or trimmed, which really took away from the dish. On top of the food issues, the restaurant was extremely cold inside. It was 52° outside, but it somehow felt colder indoors. There didn't seem to be any heating, and you could tell other patrons were uncomfortable as well. It made the whole dining experience unpleasant. I hope the restaurant can address the portion sizes, food quality, and indoor temperature, because the menu looks promising -- but the execution just wasn't there during my visit. read more

But they're really skimpy on the portion for a $5 side. Gang Dang *Red Curry* (5/5): THE star of the show. The red curry was so fragrant and it had the perfect amount of coconut milk in it. Kow Soi Duck (5/5): It came with a bunch of little toppers and a small separate pitcher of broth. The duck had a succulent, soft texture that wasn't chewy at all. Kapow's been a restaurant that was on my radar so it came as a must try when the weekend came around. The inside is not too big but it looks nice and homie. The decor gave me a feeling of a story in how an immigrants came far from home in an effort to seek a better life here in the US. We ordered: Khao Moo Dang Moo Grob - 5 out of 5 It had slices of pork skin that is deep fried with pork drizzled with their somewhat sweet and sour sauce. It is paired with chashu pork with the same sauce with a scoop of rice, a steamed egg, some cucumber, and another what seems like soy and vinegar sauce as a side. As a health conscious person, this is probably not the best health choice out there but boy I loved it. The crispy pork mixed in with chashu gives you a flavor of hard and soft. That sauce though, signifies a lot of what makes Thai food special that you don't otherwise use it in other types of cuisine in this fashion. This was the first time I've ever had this dish and I ended up speaking about it with our waiter, he mentioned it is very commonly consumed in Thailand. My dad couldn't get enough of the sauce and even dipped the beef from his pad kee mao in it. Speaking of noodles, the moment the pad kee mao arrived, you could smell its aroma. That indicated the right temperature and heat it was cooked in, getting all those flavors to burst. My dad devoured it. I thoroughly enjoyed my tofu pad Thai, which had the right tofu consistency and delectable sauce. The noodles were a teensy soft for me as I prefer a little more chew, but they were still delicious nonetheless. I took the rest of it home and even with a second round in the microwave, they were still yummy. Knowing how much my dad enjoyed it made the experience even more memorable; however, if he were to return on his own, he would certainly struggle with the kiosk as he's not tech-savvy. The restaurant didn't have many servers and only one main guy was running the floor, but I hope there would be another way for diners to check in for a table or at least receive help doing so. Kapow is a really, really amazing little gem in the Sunright Tea plaza in Union City. The food was absolutely delicious: crispy pork belly was fried to perfection and the Khao Soi duck was extremely decadent and tender. In addition, they did an awesome job with the presentation; it felt like I was dining at a Michelin guide restaurant. Service was very nice and the little restaurant can get busy during meal times, so expect a wait or come at opening. Kapow has become my new favorite Thai restaurant in the East Bay! read more

Extremely delicious! We ordered the Crying Tiger Sirloin Steak, Roti, Pineapple Fried Rice, and their special of the day--the Fried Pork. The place is small, but the staff were amazing. Everything came with slices of cucumber, which honestly felt like their polite way of saying, "Hey... balance." They don't ask how you want your steak cooked--they just cook it how it should be. Bold move... but they were absolutely right, so no complaints here. I will say, the sticky rice felt a little unnecessary--like it showed up uninvited when plain rice would've done the job. But hey, it didn't ruin anything. The food came out super fast since we were the second group seated right at opening. Within 30 minutes, the place was PACKED--like blink-and-you'll-be-waiting packed. So do yourself a favor: come early or be prepared to stare longingly at other people's food. Food is tasty yet small portions with high prices makes it hard to visit regularly. Chicken wings - so tiny but sooo tasty Fried rice w/steak - steak sliced and cooked perfectly as requested. Branzino - with mango sauce. A tiny bit spicy but enjoyed it. For a couple and older gentlemen the food was just enough but for the cost, I'd expect larger portions. read more

Went on a Friday night for a table of 3. The Kow Soi Duck was tasty - duck was tender and delicious. My kid had 3 servings of the noodles. The Butterflied Branzino was only ok. It still had a good number of bones and a 3 star for this dish. Appetizer wings were really good - crispy and flavorful. Restaurant was busy and noisy, but service was friendly. read more
