Stopped here for breakfast on our road trip from Telluride to Durango. The Sneffles skillet was awesome-sauce. And my husband thoroughly enjoyed the biscuits and gravy. Stumbled across this place by accident (not on the main thoroughfare) and were very pleasantly surprised. We sat in the outdoor patio area with our dog by our side. Highly recommend the Reuben which may be halved (plenty of food) along with a salad, or soup, that seemed straight from a local garden. All dressings are homemade and excellent. Stopped for breakfast before a hike. I ordered an omelette with havarti, roasted tomato and kale. Got the GF toast and a side of white cheddar grits. My husband got the lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes and a side of bacon. The food was delicious and our waitress kept the coffee coming. Ugh. So we visited Kate's twice on a recent visit to the Ridgway area. The first visit was very nice. I give it a 3.5-4 on the scale. Food was good. Nothing out of the ordinary for breakfast but extremely expensive for what it was. There's where the stars get deducted. A meal for three cost us roughly $60 with tip. On the second visit, it was the WORST service I've ever had in my life. We were seated promptly and then sat and waited for about 10 minutes (maybe more) before anyone came to see us. Same waitress as the day before (brunette pregnant gal). Didn't greet us. Just asked what we wanted very abruptly and left. Came back with half-filled waters. We got our food quickly (stay away from the breakfast "sandwich." It's basically an omelet on sourdough and you can't eat it like a sandwich). We ate... No one ever came back to refill drinks or ask how the food was. We clearly pissed off this waitress somehow. I don't know, maybe she didn't like her tip the day before. That's all we could think of. When she did come back, she placed the check on our table and immediately walked away. I finally got her attention and asked if I could get more coffee. She walked away clearly annoyed and came back to refill. So I asked her if she was doing okay. She said "yeah, I remember you guys from yesterday." So I continued and told her how we hadn't been checked on or served very well and was wondering if there was anything wrong. She immediately turned her back and walked away. Okay lady. Kate - I would recommend firing this woman or talking to her about putting her own personal bullshit aside when waiting on people. I would never come back here and would never recommend this place to anyone else. Go across the street. read more

My new breakfast place when I come down to the Ouray/Ridgway area! Excellent food with vegetarian choices and wonderful, friendly wait staff. The place was crowded, but they get people in and out and our wait was minimal even though there were tons of people outside when we arrived. Everything is wonderful and made from scratch. I had the eggs and hash with dry rye toast. The toast came long after I was done eating (it was cold) and when I asked for a coffee refill, I got a quarter cup of cold coffee. On a positive note, the hash was good. read more

Kate's Place is a wonderful little spot serving breakfast all day as well as sandwiches during lunch. The resturant is very clean and lively. We ordered tomato parmesean soup with a veggie panini and the roast beef au jus. I got a turkey panini on accident but it was fine! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, but my friend said the sandwich bread could have been softer. All in all, Kate's Place is a great stop for a healthy breakfast or lunch. read more

Ate breakfast there this morning, the food is excellent as usual... service was terrible from a waitress that was inattentive and rude. Was supposed to get toast with my meal; did not come with the plate when served; waitress (server 002) said she would go put the order in; as I was finishing my meal, another server came to the table with the toast and asked if we had an order of toast (I told her no, not now, I was finished with my meal). I did not get a coffee refill until the waitress brought our check. When paying for the meal, I asked if the price of an order of toast could be removed from the bill... the clerk (our waitress) got extremely rude and said I had refused the toast and it was built into the price of the meal (I guess you cannot go to Kate's and order just a plate of toast?). Then she told me to forget a tip, that she did not want a tip from me. The waitress is responsible for seeing that the guest getting the food they order, all to be delivered to the guest at the same time. Pretty bad service! read more

If Kate's Place were in Denver, I'd be in heaven. This place is almost worth the drive to Ridgway just to eat there - and that's a little over 5 hours. First of all, the decor is so charming. All the tables have mismatched painted chairs in bright colors like red, green and blue. Then there are all kinds of old signs and brick-a-brack decorating the airy room with lots of open windows. And a great outside eating area. Of course the staff are super friendly and extremely efficient. We're talking small town, successful restaurant friendly and efficient. You know, where you feel like a regular even when it's your first time there? But, the thing that won my heart over completely was the food. We had breakfast and although it's a hard meal to mess up, it's an equally hard meal to impress with. Kate's Place did nothing but impress me. And all of their food comes from local farmers which is a big plus. If you're ever driving through I suggest stopping for breakfast or lunch. Or if you even looking for a short getaway Ridgway could be a nice place to consider. read more

Ever since I moved away from Durango, I've been yearning for Kate's. I miss their delicious and HUGE breakfasts, their cozy vibe, their mismatched coffee mugs, and their amazing service. I can't even count how many times E and I came to Kate's while living in Durango. Our first visit happened after a day spent counting pika on Owl Creek Pass as citizen scientists, and by the time we got back into town we were famished. Kate's welcomed us with open arms and we chowed down on lemon-ricotta pancakes and a Monte Cristo sandwich. Over the following years, Kate's became our go-to, and one of those places we would go out of our way to hit in time for breakfast or brunch, and so far the void has not been filled by any Denver restaurants we've been to recently. If you are looking for a fantastic local breakfast, with huge plates and delicious specials, this is the place to go in Ridgeway...heck, make the drive from Montrose or Ouray if you want the best breakfast around. These plates will leave you stuffed and satisfied. Our favorites include the lemon ricotta pancakes, their biscuits and gravy, and the corned beef hash. Our waitress said "if you don't like the food, he will pay for it" and pointed at the table next to us ...which drew some laughter and more positive reviews. Excellent omelette. I got the ole (green chile and chorizo). White cheddar grits were delicious. Excellent coffee. I went with a friend. I don't think my friend tipped enough. Maybe 10-15%. I think 20-25% was appropriate but I didn't pay the bill. After my friend paid/tipped, the waitress ignored our table and never gave me refills on coffee. When I politely tried to ask her for coffee when she was near, she ignored and moved on. She was a totally different person. Would have been 5 star review but the "post-payment" service was blatantly rude and makes me uncomfortable. read more

This place is a rockstar!! Why oh why can't we have this in Denver???? Let me say the place itself is comfortable, cute, charming even though it was bustling with lots of people eating. The service was a breath of fresh air. Our waitress was awesome with our daughter and was there when you needed something and gone when you didn't. The food was fresh and cooked beautifully. I had a fluffy veggie omelet with avocado. They brought out Lola's juice and water in a sippy cup. Why no other restaurants are doing this is beyond me. Excellent breakfast stop! Ole' omelette was a very tasty choice, served with small bowls of salsa and sour cream which go well with the chorizo, green chilies and Monterey Jack cheese inside. I desired to cheat on my diet and chose the home fries along with sourdough toast, no regrets. My wife enjoyed the Sneffles skillet with roasted tomatoes along with spinach,crispy home fried potatoes cheese and topped with scrambled eggs and sourdough toast. It's been almost three years now but I still tell everyone about the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had. We were on a small vacation in Ouray and we discovered Kate's one morning. We came back every morning for the rest of our stay. The last morning they had eggs Benedict on special. I swear that was one of the most memorable meals I've ever had. I can't speak highly of this place's breakfast enough. On our way back to Grand Junction from Telluride after almost a week of skiing, we didn't expect good breakfast options to be plentiful passing through so many "one horse towns" (no offense intended!). Of course I booted up Yelp and immediately was shocked with the reviews for Kate's Place. I've never said no to a 5-star establishment and this was no exception. The place is on a dirt road and looks very unassuming from the outside, however the inside is brightly decorated with vibrant colors and is very welcoming. The menu has some amazing options... I got the huevos rancheros and the people I was with got the skillet and the chorizo burrito respectively. I got to try a bit of everything and it was honestly some of the best breakfast food I've ever eaten. Service was super friendly and made us feel right at home. Would give 6 stars if I could. Adorable brunch location we hit up on our way out of Telluride. Ample outside seating complements the cozy indoor space. We got in just before the Sunday brunch line formed. Service was a bit back-logged, but we enjoyed some fresh squeezed lemonade and fist fully of hot coffee while we waited. The dishes? A massive breakfast sandwich for my friend on perfectly buttered and grilled toast, eggs, bacon, yummy. I had the Chorizo burrito. It came with crispy country potatoes and had the nice balance of salty chorizo with eggs and sauce (and a wedge of avocado, my favorite). Bathrooms are out back, which makes me glad I came during the summer months. Cute place in a cute town tucked into some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. We stopped here this morning due to all of the 5 star reviews. I couldn't see how a restaurant in such a small town could garner such high praise. Now I Know. Tammy had the waffle she deemed the best ever. I couldn't decide between the biscuits and gravy or the house special lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes. So I got both. The pancakes are like nothing I have ever had before (in a good way). Not too sweet but with the perfect hint of lemon combined with the ricotta and blueberries none of the individual ingredients overpowered the others. Perfect harmony. Lastly the biscuits and gravy. I have been in search of the perfect order of this breakfast item since childhood. These came really close to being my all time favorite. The biscuit was baked to perfection and had a great consistency. The gravy actually seemed to have been created to order. Huge amounts of homemade sausage and a touch of spice to give it a great kick left me feeling grateful for my decision to order both. I am typically not one who likes to follow the crowd but I must admit that if there us ever a group of people who would like to carpool from Denver to Ridgway for breakfast I'm in. After all if we leave by 1 a.m. we can be there by 7:30. read more

The staff they had was very nice and efficient. They took our order in a timely manner and the food didn't take that long to come out. just had the weirdest interaction ever here, left me feeling genuinely confused because they were so aggressively rude for absolutely no reason. we walked up at 10:30am on a saturday morning and the patio was full. the website says they're open until 2pm. the sign on their door says they're open until 2pm. they have what look like multiple guest entrances (not weird back entrances that are clearly only intended for employee use). we try the front door and when it's locked my parents walk the 5 feet to go around the open side just to check before we walk away. the second my mother even sticks her head in the door a server is immediately yelling at her that they're closed. i've worked in the service industry for seven years. i'll admit i've even gotten frustrated with customers for ignoring signs and pulling on locked doors. but there was absolutely no way we could have known they were closed almost 4 hours early on a weekend morning. i also don't usually write reviews, but it genuinely upset me how rude they were to my parents. it's just unnecessary. we didn't get to try their food so obviously i can't comment on that. maybe it's fantastic. but i can't see how it could be worth risking that kind of treatment. do better. or (if you really harbor that much resentment for any customer who dares to darken your doorstep without being able to read your mind) do something else. read more

Stopped here for breakfast after Ouray didn't have much to offer. It turned out to be a good choice for the most part. My wife and son got the pancakes which were delicious. I was a bit disappointed in the biscuits and gravy as the biscuits were hard and the gravy cold. Overall good service and prices fair for what I expect.
