We came across this place purely by chance today. We were driving around looking for lunch with no particular cuisine in mind, when my companion suggested katsu. It had a been a minute since I last had a katsu, so I was game. A quick Yelp search turned up Katsuyaki, just a few minutes away from our current location. This place is easy to overlook. It's built into the ground floor of a small apartment building, with just a small sign indicating its presence. In fact, I drove past it at first and had to double back around. As we entered, we were greeted by the friendly woman at the counter who guided us through the menu and made suggestions. It's nice to go to a place where you interact with actual people and not a kiosk. They offer a nice variety of options: teriyaki and katsu, either individually or in combination, served as a bento or a bowl; bibimbap, katsu burgers, some side dishes, and a couple limited time offerings (I believe). Just a couple items today: Katsu curry bowl - very hot rice and a nice spicy curry (not excessively piquant, however). There was a generous cut of chicken katsu that crispy and moist. There were just a few florets of broccoli; it would have been nice to have a little more. Tori katsu burger, not spicy - nice thick and moist slab of chicken katsu served on a soft brioche bun with tomato, sweet pickles, red onions, and a little bit of slaw. Delicious, wouldn't change a thing about it. Fries were hot and crisp. Prices were good, about $14 each (the burger combo included a drink). It's been a very long time since I have been to this teriyaki spot. It's changed a few times and seemed to try to figure out its identity. I had the Spicy Katsu Burger Deluxe. The katsu had a great crunch and I enjoyed the slaw on top. It wasn't spicy at all. Actually, I didn't taste much heat at all. The bun was good, but the bottom bun got soggy. The fries tasted really good. They had a great crunch and soft inside. Only negative is I didn't understand what value the deluxe option gave. I asked if the "deluxe" meant larger and they said yes. Honestly, they only give you a little bit of fries. If your customer is paying the deluxe combo price, make it worth their while. I will definitely be back again. read more

When I got my food, I felt like the portions were quite smaller than I expected, especially for the price. First time. One of those places with the TV on playing Tubi. Friendly gal at the counter. Ordered the $12 chicken teriyaki bowl to eat onsite. About 6 customers eating at the tables (all lonely males this Valentine's Day). Rice was hot! Chicken was warm and the steamed broccoli was fridge cold. One use wood chopsticks were good quality. Sirachi packet and soy sauce in a bottle along with salt and pepper is available at the counter. If they are open to suggestions I would stream anime or J-pop, Use Japanese ceramic teriyaki bowls for sit down use instead of plastic, add some Japanese pepper seasoning at the counter and a "special" house mayo dressing sauce bottle for the broccoli that needs to be served warm. Last time I was here was probably 11-12 years ago when it was still known as Ed's Teriyaki. When it was Ed's, it was delicious. Last I left off with Ed's Teriyaki was that they would be closing after the original owners were going to retire. Word on the street was that the son seemed ambivalent (at the time) whether he'd want to continue the restaurant or not, and that was it. I haven't checked in with the business and totally glossed over the fact that it was known as "Greenfish" and only now as "Katsuyaki". I got the beef teri and although it was good (although I'd say it was a bit too salty now), I don't remember it hitting nearly as good as it was when it was Ed's. Maybe that's just my own bias, but Ed's was something I'd write home about. Katsuyaki? I'd be happy and think it was good, though not sure if I'd write home about it. Also their hours are only from 10am-2pm which I get it they probably know their customer traffic well and there were some days back when it was Ed's when it was totally dead there but it might be because of their location and people really have to plan when they want to visit here to eat. Overall it was ok, if you want to experience any remnants of Ed's then at least you can with Katsuyaki, I'm sure they handed the original recipes over now but whether it translates to still being good or not I'd say it's debatable. I had visited this restaurant as Ed's Teriyaki a number of times over the years and this is the first time as Katsuyaki. I was craving for a japanese bento box dinner and so I decided to try this place. I placed my order online and ordered a chicken and beef teriyaki combo bento meal. Fortunately it was not too far from my home so I made a quick trip there. Upon arriving I remembered that parking can be an adventure. The space is very tight, there are not a lot of spaces, and it is one way in and out. Inside I noticed there were only 3 tables occupied but most people ordered take out. I went to the counter and picked up my order. Once home, I opened my order and it looked pretty good. One problem that stood out was the side salad. It was supposed to be a miso salad with grilled cabbage and broccoli. Instead it was a lettuce and some cabbage salad with no dressing at all. I started on the meal and another thing became quite obvious. The chicken and beef was drenched in teriyaki sauce that was super sweet. I could barely taste the proteins. I think they should be a little more light handed with the teriyaki sauce. If you wipe away the excess, you can taste the teriyaki grill flavors on the chicken and beef. Fortunately, the meats were grilled almost perfectly allowing the meats to remain quite moist and tasty. I noticed that the price was about $1.50 more if ordered online. Since there was a small number of patrons in the restaurant I think next time I will just drive up and order to-go. read more

Just three words for you. BEEF. KATSU. BURGER. You wouldn't expect a small ma & pa shop that specializes in teriyaki to make such dang good burgers. Their spicy beef katsu burger is mindblowingly tasty, although I didn't find it spicy at all. I would come back here for the burger alone. The beef patty is thick with a beautiful golden crispy exterior. The meat is really juicy and quite flavorful on its own. The bread bun is pillowly soft and soaks up that nice beef juice without becoming too soggy. The melty cheese, fresh tomato and lettuce and acidity of the pickles all tie up the burger nicely. Their menu lists pepperjack cheese in the ingredients but my cheese was yellow, likely cheddar cheese- no complaints here, just something to note. The garlic fries are a great option for a side dish to your burger. Lots of potato-y taste with a light crisp exterior. The garlic flavor was subtle, not too strong. As a huge garlic fan, I would have liked more garlic flavor but it was still really enjoyable. Now the beef & chicken teriyaki plate is your standard teriyaki meal. The chicken is cooked well but drenched in their sweet and a bit overly salty teriyaki sauce. I do wish the chicken was moist and had a more smoky char to it. The beef is tender and a bit more fatty than the chicken which is probably why I enjoyed it more. I think the dish could be improved with a bed of cabbage to soak up all that delicious sauce and given a bigger serving of rice. The sauce was a bit overwhelming so a bigger portion of rice is needed to balance out the salt. Pro tip: Get a side of their in house made spicy sauce for 50 cents! It makes a huge difference and adds a mild kick of flavor to the meat. Located in an older part of Santa Clara behind the airport, Katsuyaki is tucked away in a long established building with its own private parking lot in front. They offer a variety of teriyaki plates, chicken katsu burgers, and even sushi platters. Service is very friendly and personable. Our food took less than 10 minutes to come out and it was presented nicely. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Such simple ingredients, yet their beef katsu burger is such a showstopper. The location seems like a bit of a rough area, so I was hesitant at first, however I can confirm that everything I got tasted good, seemed to be quite fresh, and was not only made rather quickly (I arrived just as they opened so I was the only person in there) but wasn't absurdly priced. Solid experience, 8/10 for me The only thing "downside" I have is that I got the Tori burger deluxe, and I really couldn't taste the chicken, so much so that I thought it was fish for the first two bites. However the jalapeño's and coleslaw on it were great as well as the fries were excellent. One more side note, I'm not a huge fan of california rolls, I usually prefer spicy tuna, however for the first time in my recollection I actually preferred the california rolls, very tasty! read more

This place is bomb!!! I'm dependent on Yelp ratings in choosing where to go eat in unfamiliar areas, but I'm still skeptical. The Yelp ratings for this place is earned. We ordered 1 chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu bento box and 2 beef teriyaki and chicken katsu bento boxes. The bento box looked bigger in the pictures, but I wasn't disappointed once I started eating. It didn't look like it at first--maybe because it was my first meal of the day, and I was hungry--but they do give you good portion of meats! The smallest portion is the salad, which is usually the largest in most places. I have a big appetite, and I was satisfied. Aside from the portions, the food is so fresh!!! The chicken and beef teriyaki were seasoned well and cooked well. The chicken katsu was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside--and not oily at all!! It's the best chicken katsu I've had in a long, long, time. The California rolls also tasted freshly made. Overall, the food is as good as, if not better than, most nice Japanese restaurants I've been to (I love raw fish, but my husband usually gets cooked food, which is usually bleh to me). The service was excellent. The young lady at the cashier was so welcoming. My husband wanted to watch the Olympics on their big screen, and she went out her way trying the find the right channel for us to watch. The ambience was surprisingly not busy during lunch hour on a Monday. The place is larger inside than how it looks from the outsde, with many tables and seats. I really like how they deconstructed the burger so it wouldn't go soggy on the way home. The brioche bun was soft and pillowy, and adds a great contrasting texture to the crunchiness of the chicken. And the chicken was so juicy inside! It wasn't dried out or anything, especially difficult if it's deep fried! I also ordered the garlic fries, and it was excellent! Easily in the top 5. TOTALLY blows the soggy McD garlic fries out of the water. I shouldn't even compare them. It was a bit crispy, and it wasn't DROWNING in garlic. I almost didn't want to share them with my friends... It's slightly off the beaten path, but very close to my office. I honestly challenge you to find a better deal in the bay. Apparently, this is the place to lunch at if you want a quick and solid-performing Americanized teriyaki food for a fair price. Moreover, there is plenty of seating, help-yourself water and condiments, service with a smile, and the place is clean. As you can see by the photo, my chicken teriyaki plate for $8.45 came with a good amount of chicken with sauce, a bowl of rice, 1 broccoli flowerette, and side of coleslaw. For a $1 more you can get the beef teriyaki plate which is good, but I liked the chicken more. Since I only ate half my food, I asked for a cover for my plate so I can have the leftovers for later. My previous review was for Ed's Teriyaki. Today was the first time I tried Katsuyaki. The teriyaki sauce is on par with what you would expect of a teriyaki sauce: sweet with a hit of salty umami. The chicken was juicy, not dry like other places. I got the combo with katsu and I really liked the katsu sauce they served it with which was tangy. The coleslaw was also very nice. The only thing which is not food related is that the parking is quite tight. Their street parking is fully packed when I went on a Friday lunch hour. read more

My girlfriend and I were driving around Santa Clara wanting to try a place that we have not been to yet. We stumbled across Katsuyaki while driving and overall the parking is not that bad. Upon entering Katsuyaki, we saw the menu on the huge wall which is very convenient for people entering the place. My girlfriend and I ordered Chicken Katsu and Chicken Teriyaki plate. They also had Katsu burgers which we did not try yet since we were craving some rice that day. Chicken Katsu was flavored great and same for the Chicken Teriyaki. Personally, I would order the Chicken Katsu again and maybe next time try their Katsu burgers. Overall, dining in is very spacious, parking is viable upon entering, and food is good. read more
