I stumbled upon this cute little bakery by mistake, but I was beyond happy that I did. Things to know about me: 1. I love cupcakes. 2. I love cakes. 3. I love breads. 4. I love cookies. I've even thought about changing my name to Baked Goods. As soon as I stepped across the threshold I was greeted by the smell of the sweetest sort, maple syrup. It permeated the entire space. I was so excited to be there that I couldn't contain the smile that spread across my face. I walked in further wanting to inspect their inventory when I was greeted by a very pleasant young woman. Right behind her, 3 older woman working on decorative cakes. There was so much to choose from and everything looked so tasty, making it difficult for me to make a decision. When all was said and done, I walked away with the a maple hazelnut cupcake and a red velvet cupcake. Be aware that these cupcakes are huge and they do not spare frosting. Lol. I'm usually the girl who removes frosting from any and everything but looking at their cupcakes, one could tell that it wasn't average. I tried the frosting first. Certainly light, almost whipped. The cake was soft and moist enough, but something was missing. One of the other reviews said "butter" and I think I would have to agree. They lacked that buttery, sweet taste. The cupcakes weren't the best, but, they weren't bad. They were actually good. I just really missed the taste of butter. Lol Would I recommend the place? Sure! We live in North Carolina so we weren't able to order in person or taste before but correspondence was so easy and quick that it didn't matter. In the past, all of the cakes my family has bought from here were on point. Today I went in to order a cake for my birthday, and I wanted it to be different than a normal cake. When I showed the woman up front, she asked a baker from the back because I wanted it for the next day. He tells us he can't on short notice. So I compromised and told them we could get it next week. When we told them this, the baker then tells us he doesn't know how to make succulents. We continue to try and compromise, but every time he insists he can't do it. Honestly, I sell cakes occasionally and if someone asks me to do something that I've never done before, I go ahead and try it! Unfortunately the flavor of everything reminded me of something I could buy for half the price from a local grocery store. Key West Cakes was recommended to me by a (local) friend of both mine and the birthday boy. I looked at their website before calling to place the order. I believe I spoke with Steven. He was very helpful with me as I tried to make up my mind on flavors. He made suggestions on the aesthetics of the cake, and being clueless, I followed his lead. I'm glad I did! Steven didn't even poke fun of me when I told him the lovey-dovey, mushy message I wanted him to write on top in icing. In his words, "oh, I've heard worse" after I warned him not to make fun. :) I may not have been able to taste the cake, but after seeing pictures, it looked great! It was a sunset beach theme with beautiful colors with palm trees along the side. It didn't look elementary in the least. Both of my friends said it was tasty too! I ordered chocolate cake with peanut butter filling. They offered to deliver to the restaurant where the birthday dinner was being held for a nominal $10 fee, but my friend ended up picking it up for me earlier that day and taking it to the restaurant for later that night. The ordering process was smooth, and they didn't even ask for my credit card information until the day of delivery. Next time I'm in Key West, I really should pop in and try one of their treats. I've been a customer at Key West cakes for the last few years and have always had a great experience. I'm typically in the store once a week and even used them for my wedding cake and wedding favors, which was not cheap. Today I went into the store to get cookies for my students. They didn't have any premade cookies that would be suitable for young children. So I asked if I could place an order for a tray of cookies the next day. The man spoke to me as if I were an idiot to even ask if they could be made for the next day. I'm not a baker, so I'm not sure why he assumed I know how much time it takes to make twenty cookies or why he assumed I that I was aware of their work load. So I asked about the following day. He then, very rudely asked what shape I wanted. I suggested maybe a flower with some icing. Just something a child would like. He came back with a cookie cutter and told me that it would be 1.50 per cookie. That price was too much for me to pay so he turned around and said "so never mind!" while storming off. I was shocked by the treatment I received. I will never spend any of my hard earned money there again. It's unfortunate because they did a lovely job on our wedding cake. read more

While running errands with a dear old friend, she brought me by here to order a child's birthday cake. It's a small place, with a lot of large, lovely looking cupcakes...so of course I had to buy a few (salted caramel, orange-something, and a coconut one). They were ALL delicious...and big...I cut them into quarters and shared them with friends. It was Tuesday, and I noticed some very good looking pies behind the counter. My friend said they were the BEST chicken pot pies ever, but they only make them on Tuesdays. I cannot stress enough just how wonderful Key West Cakes is! I asked them to make me a very special cake for my 50th birthday and boy did they come through! I chose almond cake and buttercream icing with Bavarian cream filling and it was positively delicious. My family raved about how good it was. The design was perfect too! They used a green Mile Marker 50 sign which was super cute! When we picked up the cake, I stayed in the car, but my son and daughter-in-law went in to get it. If you are not a local or I should say if its for a Yacht they won't serve you. I called and left a message with all details and no response. Thought they were busy. Then call a day later this guy answered and when I said for a yacht, he cut me off to say he had to go deliver a cake and couldn't take my order.
