After coming back from a trip to Chaing Mai we have been on the hunt for some authentic northern thai food - and we found it at Khao Soi Thai! My husband loves spicy food and I can barley handle black pepper. He ordered the Khai Soi (at medium heat) and I got the Duck Pineapple Curry (very very mild) and it was by far one of the BEST thai meals we have ever had. I ordered Pad Thai with crispy pork, green curry with beef and sticky rice. The curry was average I've had much worse but the Pad Thai was like a brick of noodles and the crispy pork was eating pork jerky. The best part was the sticky rice wow was that pretty bad, dry and stale. I know that it would have tasted much better right after it was cooked but that's what it tasted like delivered. read more

Having lived in Chiang Mai for over a year, I can tell you that Khao Soi Thai is a fabulous Thai Restaurant. One has to understand that our climate doesn't allow us to grow many of the spices found in Southeast Asia. So it is really unfair to compare Thai food here with Thai food there. But the food at Khao Soi Thai is so delicious. And the service was wonderful. The Khao Soi here was delicious, and so was the Som Tam (papaya salad). The Pork Jerky appetizer was wonderful. I would return over and over again just for that dish. Came here on a whim. What a gem! Right in studio city off of Ventura down a perpendicular strip mall. But they've created a nice little outdoor patio covered in greenery which I loved! Service was excellent and quick and good was delicious!! We had the pad Thai, red curry and crab fried rice!! All were great but the crab fried rice was killer!! Chunks of crab claw meat throughout. If I could give 6 stars, I would do it in a flash. This restaurant serves the solid best Thai food I've had in Los Angeles (with the possible exception of Renu Nakorn before the original owners moved to Las Vegas to open Lotus of Siam). You should be aware that some of the dishes may be unfamiliar to you if your only experience is with southern Thai food -- the style that most Thai restaurants serve. This place specializes in northern Thai cooking, and every dish I've had there has been excellent in every way. My wife and I ate there night before last, and ordered 3 dishes: green papaya salad with grilled shrimps; khao soi, a noodle soup made with house-pressed coconut milk; and the dish called "crab with curry powder." The salad was crunchy, the papaya was clearly very fresh, and the dressing had just the right balance of sweet and savory. The crab dish had a very substantial amount of crab, in a yellow curry sauce with green beans; the crab is in the shell, so a fair amount of crunching and tearing the (soft) shells apart was required, and worth every minute of effort. And the khao soi was simply delicious, with both long noodles (rice noodles, I think) in the soup and a big handful of crisp fried noodles on top. I can't say enough about how good all three dishes were. We ordered all 3 dishes with a heat level of 6 (on a scale of 1 to 10), and found that level just right for us; your mileage may vary, and I would suggest that if you are not accustomed to the heat of Thai food, you might want to order level 3 or so. And the portions are substantial: three dishes was WAY more than enough food for us, and we ended up taking about half of it home (I just had the remainder of the crab dish for lunch, where it was just as tasty as it had been in the restaurant). It is a small restaurant -- maybe 8 tables inside and a covered patio outside with 3 or 4 tables. The front-of-the-house staff consisted of the two owners and two young women who served primarily as runners; service was efficient, and everyone, especially the owners, were friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. read more

I chose Khao Soi Thai for catering over the last weekend for a party and I am SO thankful I did. Khao Soi is one of my favorite Thai dishes, (which can be hard to find) and theirs is top notch! The staff was so accommodating and friendly. They helped me pick out some of their best menu items that are good for catering. The gyoza is not on the menu yet but was recommended we try and it was delicious! I could not have had a better experience with them. I will definitely be ordering from here in the future. Went back last night as I was craving crab fried rice and they completely outdid themselves. The crab fried rice was exceptional. Perfect flavor and consistency with plenty of crab meat! Also ordered the shrimp cake balls which have just the right amount of batter so that they don't become over-crunchy when fried. Finally, I had to order the fried bananas with honey and I recommend that you do the same. They are sort of like banana-filled rolls that come with honey and glaze and are absolutely decadent. For under $6 you get five of them. Can you go wrong? Absolutely not. Also the owner is really chill and friendly, as is the entire staff. We even got to watch Thai music videos while we ate. Amazing Thai food and the best customer service, highly recommend! My boyfriend and I were looking forward to a "stay at home" date night with sushi from Postmates. However, when they cancelled the order unexpectedly after an hour wait and were scrambling to find another place for dinner, we immediately thought "let's get Thai instead". It was 8:51pm and we called to see if they would take our order even though they close at 9pm. Little did we know the owner was so sweet and said of course! It really turned our date night around! I am so happy to find this gem of a restaurant tucked away in a quiet mini-mall in Studio City, just round the corner from Peet's. There is ample free parking in the bigger lot next door - not sure if you have to pay for the smaller lot right out front. They have plenty of outdoor seating, perfect for an office lunch or girls' get together. The food is delicious, cooked by a genuine Thai chef, with the emphasis on fresh and organic. There are numerous vegan options, I even asked if they could do 'chicken' satay with fried tofu, delicious! The Chinese broccoli and brown rice is so good. They also have amazing mango sticky rice but ask for it up front and be sure to get your order in asap as they sell out daily! Let's keep this place in business, I need it! because it's tucked away down a side alley it will be easy for folks to miss, even though they have a large advertising sign in front of Peet's Coffee. I don't get Thai super often but the food and the service were great around 3pm for lunch. Had the Panang Curry with chicken plus the sticky rice. $15 minimum on cards so bring cash!
