I'm definitely having doubts on whether or not the reviews for Z Falafel are genuine. I walked to order in store on 8/11 around 5-6pm and was terribly disappointed by the quality of the food. I ordered the combo plate with half chicken and half beef shawarma. The guy literally unwrap a plastic bag and threw pieces of meat onto the griddle. I thought shawarma was supposed to be roasted and cut off directly from the vertical rotisserie. The meats for my plate was stirred fried... See picture. The beef looked like overcooked squiggly worms and the chicken bits are cut in an oblong rectangular shaped... Compared to the pics that other Yelpers are posting... Z-licious! This hidden gem located at the intersection of 8th and Flower next to Subway and ironically nearby the LA Metro Subway is one you will come back for again and again! A foodie friend told me about this amazing pop and mom type Mediterranean spot in the thick of Downtown Los Angeles and I knew I had to try it. Not only does Z-Falafel have a ton of options, but vegan and vegetarian ones as well, which makes this guy very happy.... Literally something for everyone even some naturally gluten free friendly options. I took my time studying over the menu upon strolling... The veggie plate is a hearty meal with grape leaves, falafel and much more. The wraps and pitas are on another level as well as served with fries. Z's makes arguably the best falafel in Los Angeles, ten out of ten for the win! They offer bottled and canned beveragd for sale and a few cool dessert as well. I knew when I walked in and spotted some familiar cookies via Lenny & Larry's this was going to be a good experience. Made fresh to order with quality ingredients! The chicken kebab and beef kofta were tender, juicy and nicely seasoned. Also tried the falafels, and they are just as delicious and flavorful. The red cabbage had a slight but not overpowering vinegar taste, which was delicious, and the salad was a refreshing addition to the platter. My husband and I were in DTLA over the weekend and decided to give this spot a try. I wanted something that tasted fresh and delicious without it being too unhealthy. This ended up being the perfect spot! We tried a combination of their chicken kabab, kafta kabab, and falafel. It was served nicely on a bed of rice, pickled red cabbage (which I loved, and I usually don't rave about anything pickled), and tangy salad. I loved the presentation of it! We also tried their chicken shawarma with hummus and their Greek fries. Everything tasted amazing! Their falafel is one of the best I've had. Very crispy and fluffy, and not too dry or dense. It was more than enough food between the two of us, and we ended up packing a bit to take home along with some baklava (we ate it later that night, and it was so yummy!). It's a fairly small space indoors, but there are also a couple of tables outside. Service was good. The staff was friendly and we didn't have to wait long for our food. I have been eating at this restaurant for a long time since moving to downtown LA and it has become my go to restaurant here for Mediterranean. I've had every single plate, wrap, sandwich, and it's all been incredible each and and every single time! I've been able to customize my own plates from start to finish so I'm really confused by these two reports of food poisoning because it hasn't happened to me or anyone I know who has eaten here. I've seen how they prepare the food which is with a lot of care and time and they cook the food right in front of you. I love the authentic taste to everything. Instead of a stone's throw, it's a trek but definitely worth the drive when one discovers a Mediterranean hotspot that serves up quality, fresh organic ingredients that totally satisfies & budget-friendly -- Z Falafel. What's cool is the father & son team... the menu consists of their family's recipes with dad manning the kitchen while Francisco handles the service side, & what friendly service it is! =) Upon entering, we were enveloped with delish scents of spices coming off the grill. Oops... there goes my stomach growling in hunger. ＼(｀0´)／ My brother & I shared the COMBO GRILL PLATE (beef & lamb gyro, chicken & kafta kabab combo, hummus, tzatziki, 3 salads, rice, pita bread), which is essentially a protein sampler & plenty for 2; my son had a CHICKEN KABAB BOWL (grilled chicken marinated with garlic & herbs, rice, fries). Nothing excites me more than discovering new food spots in Los Angeles. It's my first time trying Mediterranean food so I was very excited to check out Z Falafel. They are located in downtown LA where parking is a full-on challenge. Thankfully I got an awesome tip from another foodie to park at Ralph's parking lot which gives you 90 minute free parking with validation when you shop at Ralphs. Also, there are parking lots around as well that cost roughly around $5+. Once you get to the shop, I noticed they have 2/3 indoor and 2 outdoor dining tables. They are are a decent small sized shop. Now let's get to the good stuff! Z Falafel has a wide selection of options on their menu which can be overwhelming. To play it safe, my sister and I opt for the Combo Grill Plate because why not try a bit of everything they got on that menu of theirs. The Combo Grill Plate essentially comes with beef and lamb gyro, chicken kebab and kafta kebab. It also comes with rice, humus, salad and pita bread. We added the falafel cause yooo it must be their speciality if their store is named after it. The falafel, for those who don't know, is a deep fried ball made of chickpeas of fava beans. The one I got is freshly made from chickpeas. Now let me tell you, the presentation of the food was a solid 100 in my eyes. The way the food is a mesh of greens, and meats is really your ideal balanced meal. Also, the more colors in your food, the more happy I feel too! The first bite of the falafel was absolutely stunning. It had a nice crispy outside, and a grainy and flavorful texture instead. It was so delicious that I savage a majority of them on the platter before my sister could get to them. We both absolutely love the pita bread and the hummus as well, but what really sold us was the variety of sides to this platter. This place is awesome! Tony the owner is really humble and takes care of you. They are cooking some of the finest Mediterranean food in Los Angeles. This has got to be one of the most underrated restaurants I've ever been to. Since it's fast-casual, most of the orders look to be takeout but they have a few tables set up inside and outside. The only suggestion I have is to make the hummus thicker, as it seemed a little runny to me, but still very tasty. Their portions are huge so one order is plenty for 2 people. AMBIANCE Again, this is more of a grab-and-go place, but you could totally eat your food there. With food this good, I actually hope they expand their seating to be more dine-in friendly because food is always the best when it's enjoyed fresh. SERVICE Shoutout to Francisco! He seemed to be the main chef there and prepared all of the orders I saw. Since the grill is right behind the counter, you can see everything they're doing. Kafta is lean ground beef that's mixed with onions, parsley, and seasoned with spices. The meat is so tender and flavorful & it pairs really well with the rice. First experience here and it was awful. Ordered two chicken kabob plates to-go, which was around 16$ each...... sadly, the chicken pieces were SO DRY. Even my boyfriend complained to me about it and he never says anything about food. Haha. the chicken grilled to a crisp that the inside was tough leading to an unpleasant texture in your mouth. Wish we were able to have gone back and ask for a re-do or something because clearly a mistake was made on the grill time. Delicious food and so much of it for an unbeatable price! My husband and I ordered the falafel bowl, veggie plate, loaded fries and baklava. It was all exceptional! The tabouli was so fresh and the hummus and baklava both full of flavor while perfectly creamy. I didn't think I liked dolmas but after eating theirs, I've changed my mind. The staff is kind and service is quick. Some of the best falafel I've had in LA can be found here. All total, I think the meal was about $26 - for all that! If you're ever in the area and craving Mediterranean food, definitely stop by Z Falafel! I tried the combo grill plate- the presentation was on point, the food was DELICIOUS and the staff were kind and helpful! It is located in quite a busy area but there are many parking lots nearby. Keep in mind there is a wait for your meal because everything is made to order but trust me the wait is definitely worth it!! The chicken shawarma, beef kafta and eggplant baba ganoush were my favorite. The shawarma was sooooo juicy and the kafta was so flavorful!! Super friendly hands-on owner, and his crew was polite and gave us great service. Delicious food! We ordered the falafel bowl with hummus, rice and a chopped salad with chick peas, tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce, and the mixed shawarma plate with chicken, lamb and beef. The falafel was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside, and the hummus was rich and creamy. The pitas were fresh, tasty and soft. Portions were generous - we both had leftovers. 4.5 stars. I tried the combo plate because I am a sucker for good plating. They not only look good but are also reasonable priced. My friend got a veggie plate I think, with a ton of falafels. The food is great, both my friend and I enjoyed it. I tried their Greek yogurt drink, it is not sweet, which I think is how it's suppose to be, but just FYI if you ever want to try it.
