Just don't go. I was so excited to try Kin out... and man it wasn't just disappointing, the food was *bad*. After waiting an hour for our food (and half an hour to get our drinks) the food finally arrived. The fried chicken sandwich was bland. The blackened salmon had no seasoning on it -- it literally was just a piece of salmon tossed in the fryer. I don't think they even put salt and pepper on it. The mac and cheese was not flavorful and rather than having a proper sauce it just had congealed chunks of cheese. The yams were syrupy and gross. The taters were bland too. To make matters worse, it wasn't cheap either! Did the original chef leave? We were in Providence to visit Johnson and Wales University because my niece will attend the school in the Fall. I wanted to find a southern food restaurant. I can frequent when I'm in Providence. I was so excited! Until it became a disaster. Kin was not crowded. The front part of the restaurant had three tables. One table was seated with guests. The back section of the restaurant also had one table with seated guests. First, we ordered our food to go. It took nearly 40 minutes to prepare the food and attentional 5-10 minutes for it to be bagged and handed to my daughter. I entered the restaurant twice. Each time I entered the establishment, employees were standing around and talking. It's sad to wait 40 minutes for food and see four employees standing behind the bar/register area talking. Second, I remained positive about the food. We ordered BBQ wings, collard green, yams, shrimp po-boy, beignets, lemonade, and a kool-aide. The best items from our order were the drinks and wings. Everything else was poorly prep. The yams and po-boy shrimp were overcooked and had a burnt taste. The collard greens had flavor, but under seasoned. And both food containers were filled to maybe 1/2 the capacity of the container. The beignets were nothing to call home about. I may be biased regarding the beignets and po-boy because I lived in Louisiana for a short time. I give the Kin restaurant a one(1) because the staff is friendly. I will not revisit the Kin for the following reasons. The quality and quantity of food with NYC prices and wait time. read more

i decided to return to kin after having a bad experience, and i'm so glad i did!! our server was attentive and friendly, and we got seated right away. i decided to try the smothered turkey wing, and it was by far the best, most flavorful turkey i've ever had. they changed their mac and cheese and now it's a 10/10!!! my biggest complaint last time was that my cornbread was hard/dry, but this time it was perfect and the flavor is unmatched. this confirms that kin has the best cornbread that i've tried, and i've been to a ton of southern style barbecue places. will definitely be returning! thank you kin! read more

TLDR; I'm from South GA and you should definitely eat here. I think that's really all you need to know, but I'll expand. I moved to PVD in 2019 and have since been on the hunt for good fried chicken and catfish. I haven't had any luck at all- until now. I tried Kin's catfish and it was exactly what I had been looking for. The Mac and Cheese was pretty good, too. You can tell the fries are cut in house and are FRESH. I just wish there would've been some grits to go with my catfish! Overall I'd say 9.5/10. Can't wait to try the chicken and sweet tea. read more

What a terrible experience to say the least. Arrived at 2:00 and waited 15 minutes to be sat with a reservation. We then waited an additional 20 minutes before even receiving a cup of water. Flash forward to 30 minutes later we have finally put in our order for food as a 10 person table arrives next to us. After another 45 minutes, the 10 person table gets all of their food before we've even received an appetizer. Ok, now for the food at least 2 hours after we arrived. I ordered BBQ wings and fries. The texture of the wings were great, but there was at least a half a bottle of BBQ sauce poured on them and they somehow have no ranch left at 4:00 on a Saturday. Our waiter made no more than 3 appearances at our table during the whole meal. Instead, the manager or owner of the restaurant came over at least 5 times to make excuses for the poor service. 0/10, will never be eating here again. read more

My friend and I went to Kin because I read an article about the restaurant. It is a very quaint establishment. One thing I liked was the simplicity of the menu. All of the cocktails are custom and have catchy names. I ordered the one called "Black Girl Magic". It's purple and has sparkles. It was potent and very tasty. We ordered honey garlic wing as an appetizer. They were DELICIOUS!! Finger licking good indeed. As a main course, I ordered the catfish with mac and cheese and collard greens. My friend order the ribs with Mac and cheese and yams. He said the yams were hand made and very good. We both enjoyed our meals. However, my catfish was a little over cooked and saltier than I liked. I mentioned this to the waitress and before we left, chef Joe came over and we had a great conversation. He apologized about the catfish and gave me another piece with sauce to take home. Good food, great location, and great atmosphere. This place has it all. We started with drinks and oh man the featured drink was the Passionate about you. It was a rum mule with passion fruit purée and good lord was it good. I had the fried chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese. I'm always wary about other people's Mac and cheese because you know, you can't eat everyone's Mac and cheese but yeah it was legit. Perfectly friend chicken breast and the house made hot sauce is a must. In addition, I had one of their biscuits and my oh my was that thing delicious, soft and moist and make sure you add the honey butter to the top. My wife had the fried cat fish with fries and she ate the whole plate. She never finishes her food when we eat out but she couldn't stop herself lol so, I'm going to take that as a sign that hit was great. Came for lunch. What a great experience! The owner is super nice and friendly. The waitstaff was quick, courteous and the food.... we had delicious biscuits with honey butter as an appetizer. So good. Sweet tea done right. We had fried chicken sandwiches which were perfectly seasoned and came with the right amount of Mayo on a brioche bun. Pickles would have sealed the deal but the sandwich stood on its own. Hand cut fries were hot and tasty. Apple cobbler for desert and we waddled on home. Definitely will be back and highly recommend. The vibe there is great, good music and tasty drinks but the food was underwhelming. I got collard greens which I thought were good but need some pepper and salt. Breading was over salted, the breading was falling apart, and it was extremely dry and flavorless on the inside. Providence could use more Southern-style restaurants, so we were excited when Kin opened. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best. The chicken was tough and almost inedible (echoing other reviews here -- change the recipe?). Waffle was soggy. The glass of wine was, literally, about two ounces. The person who sat us was surly, but the manager was great (promotion for her, please). The worst is that they didn't have bacon or sausage -- for brunch service (??!). Asked for mayo and got three "packets." (Would it be too much to put it in a small serving cup?) Really disappointing. Hope they read some of these reviews and up their game. read more

Went today. Food was okay. Small things will prevent me from coming back. I watched a waitress holding two plates and she put one in her mouth to rearrange the plate so it would not fall. That was gross and found out she was the owner. She came over to ask us to leave in a rather cold way since it was after 4 and they close at 3. Apparently, she had no idea we waited almost an hour for our food but never asked us how it went. Potatoes were old, eggs powdered and menu only had scrambled. They were burnt a little. One piece of toast. Chicken was not cooked hard enough. Had a drink that I did not taste any alcohol and drank half before I noticed the glass was dirty. All set! It was just okay. The staff was friendly, but the bartender needs more training. My friend was giving it to him a little, and he took it in stride and professionally, but he didn't provide us with utensils or napkins when our appetizer arrived, the hostess did when our mains arrived. Chicken sliders need a better (or fresher) bun and some pizzaz, they were kinda boring. The honey garlic wings were delicious, but the regular wings on the chicken and waffles were super salty and the waffle itself was very lackluster. The blackened salmon was more burnt than blackened and overcooked. The Mac and yams were good, the greens were good but could use a bit more flavor. It wouldn't be my first thought for a night out in downtown Providence, but I would revisit for the yams, Mac and honey garlic wings! read more

I ate lunch here on 7/7/2023. I sat outside and had a fantastic experience. I ordered a drink and sat outside. The staff was welcoming and attentive. I ordered the ribs with potato salad and Mac and cheese. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the ribs were. In my opinion they were the best around. I also enjoyed the sides especially the potato salad. The Black Girl Magic drink was also outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant. I will return to try their brunch menu with the wife. Stumbled on this soulful gem. Ambiance was trendy with 90's R&B music. Food was good good! Had the garlic honey wings and they were fried to perfection. Ordered the catfish with greens and a biscuit. Biscuit was served with honey butter. It was worth all the calories. Very tasty and perfectly rationed meals. The hostess, server and owner were hospitable, friendly and very inviting. The cocktail with charred pineapple was very delicious. We enjoyed the atmosphere and styling of the restaurant. Service was friendly. Food, unfortunately, was poorly executed. My husband ordered the fried catfish, which was done with very hard breadcrumbs. This is a bad choice for a light fish. I got the fried chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was very thick, like eating a full chicken breast. That was kind of tough. Sauce on that wasn't super innovative, and lacked salt. The thing that did it in was that the grilled bun was actually charred. I can't imagine the chef looking at a charred bun and not noticing. We ate on a weeknight and there was only one other table, who had already been served. So, unfortunately, I don't trust the quality to want to return for the food. read more

Hands down one of my favorite places in Providence from the service to the food! I'm from Atlanta and I have to say the recipes are definitely southern. It's not wannabe southern cuisine. You know that stuff dressed up to seem authentic but it's really not...this ain't it! The people are friendly and they have fun while they work and the drinks and food are good. Travelling far from another state , I expected that this restaurant would at least meet the expectations of providing FRESH food. I had catfish....usually people get at least 2-3 pieces per plate. Not here ...It was insulting to see my plate as an entree. One small piece of catfish ! Collards greens were salty and well overcooked. Yams are generally good everywhere. The yams were brown with a syrup baked on them....no special flavor. But,more importantly, some side dishes looked as though they were leftovers. What a shame ! read more
