Nice atmosphere, service, and drinks but unfortunately food was a mixed bag. The good: Mac & cheese, fries, cocktails The bad: fried green tomatoes, catfish, and biscuit. The fried green tomatoes and catfish used the same type of breading. It was hard and crusty. If they switched to a batter that rested in a lighter crispy consistency it would be much more pleasant. The biscuit was definitely not a southern style biscuit. The texture had more of layered consistency like a croissant but denser, as opposed to a soft crumb consistency you'll find in the south. It didn't taste bad but hard and chewy. I'd like for this place to do well because it has a nice vibe and aesthetics. Just hope they can improve their food! read more

This is the only the third time that I have eaten here, and the second that they food has been, well, sad. The sandwich bread was a regular hot dog roll that was somewhat stale, the corn in the salad smelled and tasted as though it had started the fermentation process that happens when food goes bad. The food does not seem to be made from scratch - possibly bought partially made from Restaurant Depot. I really wanted to be able to continue to support the business, but it helps if they want to help themselves. I went to this establishment to cel my sons college graduation on Saturday, May 6th 2023. What a waste of time. We ordered our drinks which took a while...then the waitress comes back to take our order. One hour and 30min later we still didn't get our food. I asked the wai about our order and she went to ask the kitchen. That took a couple of minutes. (We were sitting in from of the kitchen so we saw everything, including our meals just sitting there getting cold with no sides) the waitress came back to apolgize And said the food will be right out. So the food comes out and it's cold. I returned mine since it was cold and the piece of fish they gave was so small. My husband never got his food. And the graduates food was cold and terrible. My dad ordered the wings with fries. So not worth the price. When I asked to speak to someone, an older woman came and asked me what she do with such an attitude. I explained to her that we waited over an hour and a half for our food and my husband never reduced it...all she said was you told me that twice. And what did I want her to do about it. Im sorry Kin. I really try my best to give spots some grace in reviews but my time there pride weekend was SO bad it had me wondering if I had pissed off our server in some alternate universe. I could not understand why our service was THAT bad. I came here with two friends during pride fest for drinks. There were a few tables open and I'd say there were a decent amount of people inside. Once seated our waitress did not come over to us for 20-25 mins. And once she did she essentially said "Yall ready?" No hello my name is or how are you. We ordered and our drinks took another 30 minutes to come out. During that time we received no waters no attention no anything. Then once our drinks arrived my friends cup had a hair on it . Our server was just like "ok I'll get you another one". When she returned With the new drink I asked if we could have some water and she said sure. She never came with our waters. Once done we quickly paid our bill and left. YIKES. The whole experience left such a bad taste for my whole crew and I was bummed because I wanted to support a new business. I am utterly appalled that my bill was so high for what i received. The first bite of my shrimp po boy absolutely changed my brain chemistry; I was going feral & needed to leave immediately. but instead, I washed the under cooked shrimp down with my beverage served in a dollar store mason jar, that by the way, never got refilled during my meal. What infuriated me the most about my sandwich was NOT only the great value stop & shop bread crumbs with absolutely no flavor underneath, but also the fact that the bread wasn't even toasted. I also never seen yams in the shape of a toenail. It tasted like a bunch of mike and ikes marinated in water. Why was it crispy? I didn't order potato chips. Did you just scrape the pan and give it to us? The catfish that my sister had looked so unlubricated and stale that when she had her first bite my tooth chipped. I have to live with that forever. She couldn't even finish it herself, nor her baked mac. The collard greens were probably the worst part. Left me absolutely speechless. No amount of salt, pepper, nor hot sauce could fix it, (and believe me, we tried.) I think the cook just gave up with this one. The stems were exposed and the leaves were not cut, so I had to force a chunk down my throat, is anyone CPR trained???? This is a violation of my safety, and an insult to my character. If you would have given that plate of greens to any other southerner, they would have bussed out laughing. I am appalled that the owner thought this was a solid take on soul food. This is slave era, at its best. Kindly bring up a name change with the next staff meeting. I also noticed how the owner made sure to talk to everyone in the restaurant BUT me and my sister, she even made sure to talk to the person sitting in the corner of the bar. The only person that was nice was the white man that seated us. We are black. How does that make sense? We took notice and then agreed that if the owner said bye to us, I would add a star. Visited Kin for a mid week dinner after discovering the restaurant on Tik Tok. I had low expectations about southern food in RI, but was blown away by the farm salad (with chicken), particular the sweet potatoes. It was the best I've had in a long long time. The pulled pork was cooked to the perfect level of tenderness and the bbq sauce was amazing. Devoured every last bite! And the fries were icing on the cake. I highly recommend this place! read more

I really don't want to give Kin a subpar review, but the last two times I've been the food has not been that great. I've been to Kin a few times and the food was delicious; the Mac and cheese was fresh and creamy, the chicken wings were jumbo and well seasoned, and the drinks packed a punch! Unfortunately, the last two times I've been to Kin the Mac and cheese was dry and the wings were tiny. I went last night hoping the food was better , and again it wasn't. We even asked our server if something has changed with the food preparation, and we told her the mac and cheese was dry and she acknowledged that it was. Well, about 30 min later the Mac and cheese they were serving was a lot creamier and looked fresh; clearly, we got the scraps and it tasted like it. The drinks are weaker than usual, I ordered three " Black girl magic" and still felt nothing. My disappointment is it seems they are now catering to demographic in the area and not everyone. Another disappointment, if our server herself noticed that cardboard Mac and cheese was not fit to serve , why would you? Sadly, I will not be returning to Kin. One of my and my bf favorite spots in Providence. The drinks are incredible(I recommend the black girl magic or Aunty's koolaid). Also the servings are well worth the price. The chicken sand which is huge and full of flavor and my bf loves the catfish with collard greens. The owner is amazing as well, always walking up and seeing how the meal is. Lord have mercy I truly wanted to like this place...as a matter of fact I drove 80 min just to support a black owned business. When we walked in we didn't receive a greeting or smile, and it was all downhill from there,..we were the only 2 customers in the restaurant with 3 servers who had zero personality, or knew anything about hospitality nor did they care to. It was never clear who of the 3 servers that came over was our actual server because nobody introduced themselves or spoke, or even checked in for refills, while we waited. It took forever to get 2 drinks, which I had to go to the bar myself to get the ice. Half of the order never came out, and when we mentioned it the server responded with "oh", and kept walking. The food was mediocre, bland, and overpriced. Tasted like inexperienced northerners attempt at soul food, but with no soul. Afterwards, when I finally saw one of the servers again to ask for my check she replied "your server will be over"..huh? ....the "server" comes over still never asked how the food was, and didn't even ask why I hadn't eaten half of my meal. My friend and I are in Rhode Island for a few weeks and decided to visit Kin for brunch last week. The wings and mimosas were really good. The ladies I was with, didn't enjoy their food and drinks as much. Fast forward to last night, we decided to return to try out their after hours menu and drinks since they had mentioned to us they also had a DJ and good vibes on Fridays and Saturdays. I ordered the wings again and my table ordered a few drinks. As soon as the wings came out and we started to enjoy them, a MOUSE ran across the floor and stopped at the table right next to us and then ran into one of their employees only doors. It startled us to the point that my friend knocked over her glass of water and we were all too anxious and disgusted to finish our meal or experience. The waitress was very apologetic and nice, however we asked that our meal be taken off of our bill since we would not be finishing it so she agreed to call and get permission from the owner. The waitress returned to our table and let us know that the owner would not comp the meal and the best she could offer was a drink to go on the house. This was unacceptable as our entire dining experience was ruined and we paid full price to eat TWO wings. The owner should have absolutely done more to ensure we were compensated for our awful experience. The waitress was more surprised that the mouse came out during business hours than she was at the fact that they had mice at all. We didn't make a big deal about paying the bill as it was clear it wasn't the waitress's fault...but we left completely disgusted and disappointed. read more

Decided to try this place on a whim based on a quick search of craving barbecue food. Remember it's Washington Street so literally no parking unless you luck out and snag a quick spot. Luckily we did and walked up to the host who told us that it would be about a 20 minute wait and he took our number. We walk back to our car and waited only about 10 to 15 before he called that a table was ready. When you walk through past the bar there's another open area in the back which we did not realize and thought was pretty cool with the awesome Decor as well. The vibes and music were awesome. The default of bringing you water is with no ice in a mason jar so I guess you have to ask for ice? Hub had no issues really with his chicken and waffles except that it was missing the syrup so he had to wait and ask and got the tiniest cup serving of maple syrup. Besides that the waffle was absolutely delicious 10 outta 10 best Belgian waffle you'll ever have and the chicken was bone in. Good and crispy but they just give 4 semi small pieces. I think this item might do better with crispy tenders. As for me, I originally wanted the ribs and she shook her head saying unfortunately they were out. So then I inquired about maybe 2 other things and 2 sides that they were also out of. Disappointing for a Friday night dinner time being out of so much stuff. I ended up having to order something I wasn't really craving. A sandwich and fries where the sandwich was cold with 2 small tenders as the chicken part but the fries were fresh out of the batch and piping hot. The Mac and cheese also came out not fresh and cold and hardened in some areas. DEFINITELY HEED THE WARNINGS ON HERE THAT THE FOOD TAKES FOREVERRRRRR TO COME OUT, FOR US ALMOST 1 HOUR YET MOST WAS COLD? when you're starving and have been waiting that long u just stuff your face and agree to never return. No salt. Nothing. My friend had to dip it in ranch dressing. Then to add insult to injury... I ordered the catfish (only one piece) with Mac & cheese and yams. Catfish? Wow. Similar to the fried chicken... I was close to dipping it in ketchup or adding hot sauce. The mac was flavorless. I tasted over cooked macaroni. First, the manager was very unpleasant when we entered. We had a party of 10; we did the reservation online and they weren't prepared for us. They finally seated us at two tables, which was ok. After a 10 minute wait, the waitress finally came over to take our orders. No greeting, just can I take your order. After other 10 minutes had pasted, the waitress came back to our table and informed us that she had lose the paper she wrote our orders on; and this happened at both of our tables. After another long wait the food (most of it) came. One order was for a salad with the dressing on the side. Well, we got the dressing but no salad. Then, the salad came, drenched in dressing. My boyfriend and I were sat at the bar, which was fine but strange considering the restaurant was empty. I got the fried chicken sandwich and he got the catfish. Food was amazing. However, there was a super obnoxious waitress that killed the ambiance. She was making herself at home behind the bar although she wasn't the actual bartender at the time, it sounded like maybe she was earlier in the day. Anyways, she was loud and made bizarre comments that weren't exactly appropriate. For example the bartender quietly asked her if she had checked on her table that was sitting outside and she responded "Nope! I haven't! Hopefully they're fine, who knows!" The bartender looked confused with her response, rightfully so. It was comments like that throughout the dinner that were just obnoxious and unprofessional. I was surprised that the bartender was able to keep a straight face with her because she was bothering me and I didn't have to work with her. I'm happy she wasn't our waitress. I went here my first evening in Providence. Overall the experience was ok. The music was amazing. This biscuits were amazing. Mac an cheese is on point and so is the collard greens. Haven't had collard greens this good in ages. I would have really liked if the place had plexiglass to separate customers. Especially at the bar or through high traffic areas. The hostess and waitress were good along with the manager. Now what I don't like was that the cook did not wear a mask in the back cooking area. It wasn't like a one time thing either. She drank a drink also. When she saw me looking she put the mask on for a few seconds. No one said anything to her either. Which surprised me even more. Also I was surprised to see a rodent trap right where I was sitting. Overall I wish this restaurant the best. Oh and don't get the catfish. I heard the yams are delicious too. Another table had an issue with the fried chicken I believe not sure. There was a mix up with our order where they took our order to another table and then .....but you know what we all make mistakes. read more
