If you like to sit at the bar chances are you won't get a seat even if you wait on line for 35 minutes. 2 couples ahead of us were able to but then when my wife and I sat down we are told the seats are reserved. 3 seats reserved for 2 older folks and the person who drove them and 2 other seats reserved for an employees parents who were on line behind us. Won't be patronizing Kindle again and I know they could care less. Hopefully the owner will fix this so others don't experience this BS! read more

There tonight based on reviews. Much of the food was MEH. Tried the appetizer cheese plate & meat as I've had things like this before and was always pleased. The meat was like leather and one cheese had almost no taste and the other was too strong. The toppings for them would have been nice had the meat been chewable. My husband had the strip steak dinner & a appetizer crab cake on the side. Everything was tasty esp the sauces for both BUT the steaks are NOT AGED so we might as well have gone to a diner and ordered their leather steak. Crab cakes w/remoulade sauce were very good. For dinner I had the scallops which were VERY tasty as was the risotto cake. Very beautiful plating on this dish. My daughter had the mac n cheese from the kids menu and enjoyed every bite. Desserts: Fudge pie w/ice cream - very rich but very tasty Malted choc crème brulee: very tasty Salted caramel ice cream: very tasty per my daughter Key lime pie: Had it to go - Very tasty Note: Our server was very pleasant and kept on top of things esp for a busy weekend night. We tip very heavily for good service but shorted her tip by the $11 for the meat and cheese tray because she never even appeared interested in taking it off the bill when she could see that we didn't eat any of it AND we told her we didn't care for it. Been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. It's not that they're doing anything particularly unique here, it's just that they're doing it better. The salads are perfectly dressed. The burgers are so huge that you could literally cut them in half a soon as you get them and take the other half home. The outdoor shaded patio on the side is just relaxing and delightful. Stopped in for lunch on Sunday. We split the beet salad with blue cheese. Tasty on a hot day. I had the red, white, and blue sangria. Tasted like white wine with a strawberry and some blue berries in it. Not sure it was worth $8 but also refreshing on a hot day. I had the filet sandwich with caramelized onions and blue cheese. It was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and the flavors went well together. Husband had the cheeseburger, also very good. I would definitely come back. This restaurant is exceptional! I came for the first time this evening and was blown away about the quality of the food and particularly the filet mignon special! For $25 the amount of filet mignon was noteworthy and the steak itself was phenomenally tender. Veggies also delicious that come with the meal. It has a nice vibe to it with dark woods, large tables and comfortable chairs and booths. Food: The food was hot, tasty and well presented. The quantity was appropriate. Cleanliness: As we waited for a table, we witnessed the waitress wipe the table down with a dirty, wet kitchen towel. The bathroom was clean. Service: The dirty, wet kitchen towel that they used to wipe down our table had more personality than the staff. What a miserable bunch of people - I swear they were sucking the life out if everything and anything around them. The service was so bad we got the giggles, thinking we were being Punked. Overall the food and atmosphere make Kindle a good option for lunch. read more

My wife and I eat here at least once every time we vacation in Lewes Delaware. Usually the food is good but not today. My wife ordered the halibut, recommended by the waitress. What she received was a piece that looked processed, flat cut in a rectangle, and not flaky like halibut should be. She noticed that the people around her that ordered halibut got fresh looking flaky pieces. She mentioned this to the waitress and all she said was that this was halibut. My fillet mignon was doused in a weak sauce that took away from the $30 steak vs enhancing its flavor. My dog will end up getting most of this meal. We used to love this restaurant. My husband had the steak frites which he really enjoyed. I got the scallops and was less than impressed. They were overcooked and very salty. The waitress was very nice and tried to make it right. this is a tale of 2 kindles; one of lunch and one of dinner. we strolled into lewes in the late afternoon famished and tired from packing and unpacking and just made under the 2:30 deadline for lunch last call. we were seated promptly (when they could have been justified to turn us away) and our orders were quickly taken by a cordial waitress. the hamburger, ham and brie sandwich, and chicken tenders and fries all came out on cue and were all tasty with nothing exceptional to remark upon other than when combined with the service and ambiance, it gave me high hopes for the lewes dining experience. it was not an omen of good things to come. now this is a quick digression from kindle by itself to the whole downtown of lewes restaurants. there are about 10 restaurants and they are all seafood/steak places and they all serve, basically variations of them same thing with a couple of exceptions. in other words - this is blue haired, wasp heaven. back to kindle - dinner. after being dulled out by the lack of dining choices in downtown lewes and being too tired to drive out along route 1, we decided to go back to kindle after having such a nice lunch there a few days ago. where the lunch service was quick and cordial, then dinner service was slower than a health care bill passing through congress. for an appetizer, we ordered some mussels which were cooked in a chardonnay and garlic broth and considering that i guess they sent some kid down to the ocean to hand pick the mussels himself, because that's how long it seemed to take from order taken and dish delivered, they were fresh tasting and good, and worth the wait. then came the very long intermission between appetizer and entree. i don't know why it took so long to cook a princess cut (4 oz) filet mignon, campanelle pasta, and chicken tenders with fries, but i am guessing when they named the restaurant kindle - it meant that every meal was cooked by a single candle. (rim shot) the meal was very good at the end of the day. the meat was tender and juicy and the pasta was huge and certainly well flavored with pesto and pine nuts. we skipped out on dessert figuring that we might have to book another night at the hotel in order to receive the sweets. every place has it good and bad days, but what bugs me is that there are so many beach restaurants that are truly mediocre that put on airs of a 5 star joint, when it is only the fact that you are far away from any real choices that they can get away with bad service, average food, and high prices. next time i come to the beach..... i'm getting a house and cooking my own damn food! read more

My wife and I took my blue haired Mom up Rt. 1 to Lewes for a weeknight dinner. We were headed for either Agave, or to give Kindle's new location a try. Got a metered spot on Second St. and walked by Agave, and the dinner crowd had overwhelmed their small space by 6:30, so off to check out Kindle just around the corner. A quick look at the menu got Mom's approval and a table for three was available in a couple of minutes. We got a bottle of Rose with the girls ordering green salads, and I tried the fire roasted tomato soup special that evening. The soup was wonderful. Great flavor and whipped up into a light bisque-like consistency. We ordered dinner, with both women getting crabcakes. The crabcake entree came with 2 cakes that were nicely seasoned and with hardly any filler. The light tarter sauce added a nice flavor without being heavy. My wife was pleased and she tries crabcakes everywhere we go. I passed on my usual menu target of a fresh catch of the day, and decided on the seared scallop entree. I was attracted by the beurre blanc sauce and the veggie ragout touted on the menu. (We had seen Julie & Julia the night before at the Midway Theater and I wanted something with butter for some reason!). The sea scallops were great, and the sauce accompanying the five seared gems was fantastic. We ended the meal splitting the coconut basil ice cream with pineapple, which was better than it sounds. We felt that Kindle is a great addition to the downtown selection of Lewes restaurants. We never made it out to the Paynters Mill location and we liked the way the old bookstore was redone in a very Pottery Barn, meets Westin hotel type of decor. We found it soothing and inviting. This will be a warm comfort food spot just like Half Full for the off season months that we enjoy so much. read more

I am shocked by the negative reviews on here. This is my favorite restaurant in Lewes. I have always had fantastic food (personal favorites are the filet with horseradish sauce, or the gnocchi for a vegetarian option). Wonderful food and drinks and very personable wait staff. Three people ordered burgers and were satisfied. I ordered the ribeye steak with fries. It did not look like a ribeye to me. It was very thin, the meat was tough and had a fair amount of gristle. Went down at around 7pm....party of 5....had about a 30 minute wait....grabbed some cocktails and waited outside on the little patio..wait ended up being about 35 mins...no biggie...sat inside....had the clams and sausage appetizer and honestly was one of the best apps. I really wanted to like Kindle, but there was no force in its favor. To set the stage, my parents are huge fans of Kindle (or were huge fans...) so we saved it for the last night of our vacation. I walked in with high hopes and truly wanted to like it. It simply fell on all counts. We didn't have to wait for a table, but quickly discovered the potential root of the open tables. We were surrounded by no fewer than 5 screaming children at three different tables. There are not words to describe exactly how loud it was and this really should have served as our warning sign to run for the door. No other tables were available so we decided to make the most of it. I ordered a skinny margarita with an open mind, requesting minimal agave and light salt. After a bit, the margarita arrived and it was sub-par - at best - covered in salt like the chicken fingers that the kids around us were throwing at their parents, one another and us. What a coincidence? Nonetheless, I hoped that the tequila alone would numb the shrieking from the tables around us. Suddenly, it was time to order. There were limited gluten free options, but I appreciated the stars that denoted the gluten free choices. I ordered the princess cut filet medium as well as the BLT salad. At this point, the yelling children were actually competing with the noise from the cackling women in the bar that were literally too drunk to hold their martinis - classy. The BLT salad arrived and was fine - nothing special or noteworthy. Very, very average. The beet salad looked great and I immediately had order envy. Next, my steak arrives and - shocker - it's well done. We all saw that coming, right? Our waiter disappeared (or was running from the kids) so I ate the pieces that were not charred and imagined what quiet used to sound like. The fluke looked fantastic. We finished with coffee that was good and a better-than-average dessert. Overall, Kindle gets two stars, due to the gluten free options, dessert and my vision of what Kindle could have been. The food, the drinks, the service - fine. The atmosphere - absolutely unacceptable. I wanted to like Kindle, but will not be going back. read more

Very much enjoyed our dinner when visiting Lewes recently. We were able to get a table right away on a Saturday night. Despite it being off season, the restaurant and bar filled up pretty quickly. We started at the bar. Service was fast and friendly. Good sized cocktails for the happy hour pricing. Cocktails were great! We then sat for dinner and started with the mussels. Delicious! Then for meals we had the dinner special, lamb meatballs and a wedge salad. My boyfriend and I both enjoyed all of our meals. Good portion size for both items. We opted for dessert. Coffee and double chocolate donut sundae w/ peanut butter ice cream. It was amazing! Service was excellent! We had a wonderful server who was knowledgeable and helpful in accommodating my boyfriend's tree nut allergy. It appeared the staff was working together to help each other. Kindle embodies the unique "old but new" charm of Lewes, and the food was well worth the price and 15 minute wait. The portobello sandwich was a delight, and while I didn't have my ID and thus couldn't sample their cocktails, their commitment to responsible service was admirable.
