My mistake for not taking more pictures. This place is nuts good. My Chinese friend brought me here. We had the chicken and abalone, 1/2 roast duck, and ong choy. This is not your strip mall Chinese place. All of the duck and chicken was cut into small pieces with the bone in. You'll have to use your fingers to get every last piece of meat. My only caution is about the parking. I accidently parked in the next business' parking in the back which has a shared parking lot. The guy was cool about it and I told him I'd be careful next time. I've been here at least two times The food is great and service is quick.. My favorite dish is the honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp is cooked just right and is not greasy. The amount of mayo is just the perfect ratio. I also tried stone pot beef and mushrooms. This dish was not very impressive but served its name. It tastes just like braised beef and mushrooms with nothing unique in flavor. The fried intestines are delicious but needs to be shared with a group of three or more people because of how rich it is. The service was so great that when they packed my leftover intestines, the gave me a new sauce container to go. read more

Came here after tennis with some friends and it was very loud. The parking lot was packed and the private rooms were also packed with karaoke singers. It took a long time for us to get greeted once we were sat since I think the servers were busy with the rooms. I ordered for our table and confirmed the order with the server, but once the food came out, they never made the honey walnut shrimp (what I always order to compare Chinese restaurants) by the time we realized it, we were already full, so I just made sure it wasn't on the bill. The prices were a bit high for the portion sizes, and everything was very salty, but overall it wasn't bad, but wasn't the best either. We got hot and sour soup (not very hot or sour, kinda bland), yeung chow? fried rice (shrimp and char siu, this might have been my favorite item), beef crispy noodle (maybe tied for fave, pretty good with veggies and tasty noodles), beef with mushrooms (the mushrooms were good, there were multiple kinds and the beef was very soft), salt and pepper pork chop (not a huge fan since I don't like meat, but friends liked it), eggplant with pork (very salty and syrupy almost). We came here 3 times in a month with each visit getting worse while ordering many of the same things. It is good, but the portions are smaller with each visit. King restaurant currently has the best cantonese cuisine in Honolulu. This establishment started out as a restaurant/karaoke place but the good food quickly spread throughout the island and now they have the entire space filled with large party tables. There are still a few smaller tables for diners of 2 to 4. They still have the private room for karaoke as we could hear some woman belting out her songs. Service is very friendly and fast unlike the typical chinese grump attitude. Although they have the typical cantonese favorite dishes, the preparation and taste of the food is so much better than many of the other establishments. If you are a large party, you should book a table well in advance. If you are a small group, it would benefit you to show up early (before 6pm) to make sure you get a table or you will end up waiting upwards to an hour for seating. Parking is behind the restaurant in a few limited stalls. Be careful that the lot is shared by other businesses and at one visit, the woman from the adjacent bar came and told us that the tow truck was on their way to tow unauthorized vehicles. You can save yourself any of this headache by parking at the nearby Ala Moana center and walking a few minutes. A walk back to the mall and maybe browsing after a huge feast at King might be a good thing. read more

This is a Northern ChInese style restaurant with private rooms that also doubles as karaoke rooms. A little unusual but food is great here! So who cares if some people are singing next door. I ordered steamed oysters with XO sauce, 1/2 roasted duck, ong choy with garlic in hot pot, two bowls of steamed rice and complimentary mango pudding as desert. Base line, all dishes were good to very good. No complaints. No food left over. XO sauces really brought out the delicate flesh of oysters in a very refined way. Kudos to the cook! Duck was also very good but might be a little salty for my taste. Maybe it's the climate here where people might prefer a little more salt. Ong choy was also good. Surprise was the free mango pudding. Not sweet but just right. My wife absolutely loved it! Service was very good and friendly for an Asian restaurant. Gave this place a try on a Wednesday night and it was a full house! Luckily we didn't have to wait too long, but there were tons of large parties so this is definitely a place for family style dining We ordered the chicken in chili oil, honey walnut shrimp, and enoki /beef in clay pot. Everything came out in less than 10 min, and I was very impressed with the food! The chicken reminds me of the cold ginger chicken, their satay is delicious. However, it has peanuts just FYI for anyone with peanut allergies! The honey walnut shrimp was super crispy even with the mayonnaise on it. Even after an hour it was still crispy which made it even more delicious! The clay pot was pretty good but I would probably try another dish next time. I just have to minus 1 star for inattentive service. We got our food before we got our water even though two waiters came and asked if we wanted water beforehand. We also never got a water refill, had to stand up to wait for a check and get our own boxes. But I guess that's not surprising for Asian restaurants? I would still come back! read more

We had the privilege of getting of the private dining rooms which can hold up to 14 people comfortably and to get one of these rooms you must spend at least $200 which shouldn't be a problem if you have a group that big. And you truly best part about having a private room is that you have your own privacy and they even have free karaoke in the room as well. As for the food here, there are so many options to choose from here it will make your head spin. Prices might be a tad higher than most Chinese Restaurants but just remember the quality and presentation of the food here is very upscale and not as greasy as most places. The food we had here were simply delicious and beautifully presented. The Whole Roast Duck was one of the most juiciest and flavorful Ducks I have ever eaten. Not too sure if it has to be ordered in advance but this is something you have to eat here at King Restaurant Honey Walnut Shrimp here was made to perfection and not covered in a whole bunch of sauce. We came here for late Father's Day at around 9 pm and it must've been super busy earlier cause the servers were hustling and shuffling the chairs around. The star of the show was definitely the crab. There's no doubt the seafood at this place is fresh and caught right in their tank. The meat was juicy and the sauce was super tasty! The rest of the dishes were okay, nothing "out of this world". I was low key sad that the shrimp was not done as expected because it contained that "goji berry" herbal taste (if you know what I mean), however my parents did enjoy it. Presentation was above average for a Chinese style restaurant Overall, a fair Chinese restaurant. Apparently they have karaoke during late hours which was interesting. King Restaurant & Bar is a new Chinese restaurant in town! With this name, you wouldn't think this would be a Chinese restaurant, but yes, it is, w/ karaoke rooms too! Just opened 2 months ago, word has been going around town w/ people streaming in to try their dishes. Its owner & creative entrepreneur, Kevin Li, opened this new restaurant, which is not your typical Chinese restaurant. (You may recognize him as a former owner of the closed Hung Won Restaurant in Kaimuki, & currently owns Dynasty Foot Massage & Friend Café in separate locations down the street from King Restaurant.) While most Chinese restaurants in town offer only Cantonese cuisine, King Restaurant not only has Cantonese dishes (salt & pepper pork chops, roast duck), but also offers a variety of unique regional specialties, e.g., as clay pot rice dishes, Hainanese chicken & spicy chili-infused Szechuan dishes. And no wonder! The head chef, named "King," came to Hawaii in 1989 from Hong Kong & has more than 30 years of Chinese cooking experience from popular local restaurants, e.g., Legend Seafood, Kirin (Waikoloa), Au's Garden & Jade Dynasty. Chef King periodically travels to China to keep current on food trends. I've tried the following thus far: * Home Style Rice Noodles - mixture of pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, eggs & rice noodles (no gravy). A good variety of ingredients that made this dish quite tasty. * Stir-Fried Pumpkin, Chinese Yam, Black Fungus & Snow Peas - loved this colorful, flavorful dish; the pumpkin & yams were cooked tender & contrasted w/ the crunchy black fungus & snow peas. * Honey Walnut Shrimp - when I first saw this dish, I wasn't too keen to see small globs of mayonnaise on the shrimps; however, this was easily overlooked, as the shrimps had the perfect crunch on the outside & tenderly moist on the inside. The glazed walnuts were crispy & tasty. * Salt & Pepper Pork Chops - perfectly fried until they were moist, tender, flavorful, & not too greasy. Loved the jalepeno peppers, green onion & chopped garlic toppings. * Hainanese Chicken - tasty poached chicken accompanied w/ ginger onion & garlic pepper sauces. * Char Siu Egg Noodles in Soup - tasty broth, but wish it were temperature hot instead of lukewarm. There were lots of sliced char siu in this dish; however, they were chewy due to being fried before being put into the soup. * Steamed Spare Ribs & Pumpkin in Black Bean Sauce - very similar to a dim sum dish of steamed spareribs. Nice combination of small ribs & pumpkin slices, w/ the steaming process creating a flavorful sauce as it cooks. It's made to order, so it takes about 20 minutes before you get this dish, & it comes piping hot. I loved their house-made spicy sauce condiment! Made w/ chili peppers, garlic & oil, it added a kick to what was dunked into it, just like mustard-shoyu sauce. Not oily at all, the server noted that many people have asked to purchase it, but is only available as an accompaniment for take-out orders or leftovers taken home. We had 2 personable servers who were attentive to our needs. However, they didn't know what was not available until they put in the order with the chef & had to let us know that they did not have what we ordered. Give them time to have their system in place. And it's BYOB for now until their liquor license is approved. Open daily from 11a to 2a. Free parking in the back, enter from Kapiolani Blvd. or from Makaloa St. across from Sam's Club. I look forward to trying more dishes on their menu. However, as this restaurant is still new, they're still in the process of trying to finalize their menu options. Some of the menu items, such as Mushroom Chicken Clay Pot Rice or Spare Ribs Clay Pot Rice (cooked in clay pots with the rice forming a crispy crust) have not yet been offered. I look forward to trying their elusive roast duck, as they use an in-house special roaster; however, they roast only so many ducks per day & since it's a popular menu item, best to call in advance to see if they have it available. Being that the restaurant has been opened only 2 months, I give them the benefit of the doubt as they try to hone their menu items to what their customers want. They also have 3 karaoke rooms, w/ karaoke being popular in China. As the rooms are used more during the evenings, I would imagine it would be quite noisy if you were sitting close to the rooms. While we were there for lunch, we sat next to one of the karaoke rooms w/ a party going on. Servers were going in & out w/ food orders, & it did get quite noisy. Even w/ the door closed, we could hear the group having a great time singing their hearts out & oftentimes, off-key. That didn't bother us, though. You can always sit on the far side of the main dining room, away from the karaoke rooms. What a great potential for this new restaurant! We'll be back, as we are confident the grand opening jitters will be resolved, as King Restaurant will fill a niche in HNL! read more

Solid choice for Chinese food outside of Chinatown - I would come back again, especially with a group as the restaurant is spacious, bright and clean. We came for lunch so the BYOB policy wasn't an issue but I could see that people coming for dinner would want to know that in advance. I wouldn't say any of the dishes were standouts; our server mentioned the clay pot rice was a Chinese specialty but I can't say I tasted much difference between that and the regular rice. The roast pork and duck were as good as any I'd eaten in Chinatown, and while I would have preferred more sauce on the Honey Walnut Shrimp, they were nicely crisp on the outside and tender inside. Our server mixed up our order after we canceled a Char Siu Noodle dish - but made up for it by letting us keep the original noodle bowl and bringing a side of duck. Tip given w as 11% due to the horrible service supplied and the food was served poorly and with no taste. Waitress came back and said she was changing the tip and told us it was a new law that required 18% or more tipping! Took a picture of the bill and tip given and explained that tips are based on the service given as well as food quality they allow to be served... She argued and we told her that we would just dispute the entire bill and submit a fraud report to the police. It didn't take too long. I judge restaurants personally from how good their walnut shrimps are. It's worth getting here. Everything else we got was good too. The service we got sucked!! I mean right from the beginning when they couldn't find my reservations on the list where I had to point it out to them. We sat and waited and waited and waited no one shows up to greet us or talk about the menu etc a good 15 minutes. I left to go across the street to buy some beers at Chris's liquor store. When I came back about 6 minutes later, my friends at the table said no one showed up to take our orders yet. I had to walk up to the counter where there was about 4 employees just standing there, and asked for beer glasses and if someone could take our order. Throughout dinner no one came over to check on us or refill waters. After our last dish got to our table I asked for wine glasses. They said sure no problem be right back, and no one came back with wine glasses. After about 15 minutes I walked up to the counter AGAIN and got the glasses. The worst part of this BAD SERVICE experience was when a different employer came to check on us. He asked if we wanted "to go" boxes but we said no need because we weren't finished yet. But here's what really got under my skin.. the same guy immediately comes back to our table with our check!! WTF!!?? The place wasn't closing and it wasn't that busy and felt we were being pushed out of there. We didnt even ask for our check nor did we seem we were done. Management should place their waiters and waitresses in sections so they can be more attentive to their own tables. Not have 3 or 4 different servers all over the place. So unorganized!! A friend of mine said they recently checked out a new Chinese restaurant that was really good. So of course, I had to check it out! There was 6 of us and a child. The restaurant was full on this Friday night at 7pm. Service was good...quick and efficient. Food was delicious with a great variety of dishes to try! I'm glad that we had a good size party to try as much as we did! Tip: you can park right in front of the restaurant on kapiolani after 6:30pm! read more
