I am never disappointed by dimsum at Kirin, everything is always great. I like the Burnaby location next to Starlight Casino best between the three locations including Vancouver and Richmond. It seems easier to get to and to park at. Reservations highly recommended at all locations. I recommend everything on the menu, but these are my Must gets: Durian mochi!!! Came here once for Christmas holiday dinner, food was really good so we decided to have dim sum with family on Sunday. We had a reservation at 10am but we still needed to lineup. This was alright. Seems like they are always busy because people say it's one of the best Chinese restaurant. Honestly, the Dimsum was just the same as the other "lowered rated" restaurants. Service could be better if it was faster. They brought us one order every 15 minutes or so, there were usually 4 items in one and we had 12 people!!! So some of us ended up watching others eating. Anyway, I recommend the durian mochi. It was really really good. The durian tasted like ice cream, soft and creamy and immediately thawed out in my mouth. Fried rice. No good. I don't recommend. Kirin restaurant in New West is a nice Chinese eatery, located right by the Starlight Casino. It's a relatively new establishment so everything looks nice and clean for now, unlike the casino. I'm not a big Chinese food type of guy, but I won't say no either as I Am a bit of a sucker for dim sum. This place has pretty excellent food. I had to wait a bit to place my order, so that was kind of annoying. It's actually quite quiet in here which is unusual for a Chinese restaurant, but it was pleasant. Service could have been better. The place in itself could use some improvement, but it's good enough when you compare it to the other Chinese places around. read more

Kirin at New West is one of my favourite dim sum restaurants. Firstly, parking is usually an issue with any dim sum restaurant in the lower mainland. It's never an issue here, in the worst case, you can always park in the lower parking lot, it's always empty. Kirin's also takes reservations, so if you don't like waiting for a table, then just phone ahead a few days ahead, super simple. This Kirin has a very large dining floor and while it is noisy like any dim sum place, it feels bright and spacious. In terms of the menu, they have all my favourites, including the chinese donut in a rice noodle, which often isn't available at other restaurants. My only point of feedback is that sometimes it's really hard to flag down a server. This also isn't uncommon of dim sum restaurants, but it would be nice if it didn't take over the top hand gestures to get someone to the table! lol But other than that, it's great, I would recommend this one to anyone looking for good dim sum! read more

I love this place for their dim sum. I haven't been disappointed with their dim sum. I think their dimsum price is quite fair considering the quality. I went for dinner for first time on Valentine's Day, picked dinner for two menu, around $100ish. It has cold appetizer, fish maw soup, lobster on spinach ramen, stir fry chicken and scallop with veg, stir fry pea tips, dessert. It is not a deal at all. It's not worth it. Maybe they're not used to cooking small portions. After cold appetizer, we had to wait for almost 1 hour to get the soup. What worse, everything was mediocre. Went to the Kirin this past weekend with some friends, we fancied some dim sum. As we've been here many times before, we know we were in for a treat. Well, it was a bit disappointing, definitely not up the usual high standards, food came out , but it kinda tasted bland. I don't know if I'll ever really be a dim sum person, but the beautiful, modern, spacious Kirin Restaurant was a good restaurant to try it. They accommodate big groups handily, which was one key to enjoying the experience, sitting at a table with about 10 others while basket after basket, plate after plate of delicacies arrive to be shared. My friend did the ordering for all of us, so I couldn't tell you much about what I ate, although the sticky rice and meatballs and potstickers were among the highlights. I had a near miss with a basket of chicken feet, and the deep-fried squid was decent, but has nothing on a good Greek calamari. I tried to be adventurous, but mostly it was a lot of unfamiliar food to be eating so early in the day - I grew up on Sunday breakfasts of bacon, omelettes and hash browns. I also don't like eating food when it's hidden inside other food. My favourite part was watching all the happy families at their version of Sunday brunch. And I liked that we were not at all rushed: able to sit and visit and drink tea for as long as we liked. Reservations were definitely a must, especially with a large group at the peak Sunday hour. We had Dim Sum only - around 2 pm so it was not crowded. Service was good and the meal very good. We did not have a long wait. The teapot arrived very quickly and the food soon after. There is a delightful Asian garden to look out on if you are sitting on the west side of the very large circular room. There was no loud blaring music which so many restaurants are inflicted with. The price was $18, included tax and tip, for 2 people. Only complaint was that the washroom was rather messy. Patrons should learn to put used towelling into the wastebasket, not on the floor. read more

Since we were in Surrey that morning, we dropped by for dim sum at the Kirin at Starlight Casino on the way back to Richmond. The standard shrimp dumpling was plump and delicious, while the BBQ pork bun was also not bad. The char siu inside wasn't too fatty, which I feel is ideal when it's used this way. I was also happy the bottom was not soggy. The more premium dish that we ordered was the duck web braised with abalone sauce. It was fancier than the standard ones cooked with oyster sauce in a steamer and definitely looked like they were cooked with care. These were leaner, but I didn't feel the abalone sauce was too different from the regular sauce. We ordered the famous fish paste and bean curd rice roll as we had a very good experience last time. Indeed, this time, it was just as good -- with a perfectly crispy bean curd roll and springy fish paste. A winner every time. We also ordered a deep-fried fish paste and chive dish. Turns out this is pretty similar to the rice rolls, and it was a bit redundant and not as good. I would've gone with another plate of rice rolls instead. The egg tarts were delicious with a flakey crust, and the "egg shatters", basically deep fried egg puffs, were overly sweet with the mass amount of syrup. They weren't overly crunchy though, which was good. I enjoy the dim sum at this Kirin. It's less packed than the Richmond one, and they don't even charge the standard tea surcharge! read more

Nice atmosphere but it's an unprofessional restaurant that is not able to deliver good food and service in any reliable manner. The food is very inconsistent, with many dishes being served just poorly and unsuitable to eat. Its often oily, overcooked, undercooked, or short cutted in some way by big mistakes in in the kitchen. Several confused dishes look and taste nothing like what the names suggest, and not in a good way The service is even worse. You'd think reservations were the most complicated thing in the world considering they don't always honor them and make you wait anyway when you have them, and they are so difficult to make. The front of the house is always confused as if managing reservations is like managing a space mission. Once you're seated they forget items you ordered and sometimes bring wrong items that you didn't order. Some food is good and some food is terrible due to there is a total lack of consistency and effort in the kitchen. Servers seem only attentive when they feel like it. it's been such bad experiences here recently. Need a long break as they dont treat customers right, even when you too very well, and I can't support them when they are like that. read more

Exceptional dim sum with well dressed Chinese dudes. I've only been twice for dim sum, but both times I was impressed. Do come early as it fills up in the first 20 minutes. Prices are a tad higher than most, but the portions and quality make up for it. The waiters looked like they just put on a fresh tailored suit from HK. Friendly and efficient, one guy even balanced all our plates on one sleeve without getting dirty. Fresh, fast, filling and light on the wallet. Win. read more

I Think you have to put your order in ahead of time, because it does get sold out (prob cuz they don't make much of it, lol!!!). Service was terrible. We ordered 15 dishes and they literally came out one at a time. We were always just sitting there waiting more than 10 minutes for the next dish to come out. I know Kirin is more of an upscale dim sum place so I can understand that the dishes were smaller than usual however the quality and taste of the food was mediocre at best. Our entire party of 9 would not go back. The staff was great at taking away plates but did a poor job on refilling water and never came around to see if things were okay. Let me start off by saying Kirin is probably one of the best Chinese Seafood Restaurants in the Greater Vancouver Area in my opinion. I've been here countless times and have never once been disappointed by their food quality. Of course, everyone's experience is different and quality varies depending on what you order, but overall, Kirin provides one of the best overall experiences in town. First off, there is more than sufficient parking both on the upper and lower levels (shared between the three restaurants and the casino). Secondly, the restaurant is exceptionally clean compared to typical Chinese Restaurants (Kirin is on the high end of that spectrum). The service can be inconsistent depending who's working, but there's a relatively young supervisor (he used to work at the Noodle Shop next door) that we love. He's normally there when we visit and he's genuine, helpful, approachable, and efficient, all great traits in an employee (forgot his name). One of my personal favourites is the restaurant's BBQ Pork, simply delicious! Well, my stomach's growling just thinking about it, so I guess I better find myself some awesome BBQ Pork now... read more

I have tried many dim sum places in my life time and this one is by far the best one out there. When I walk in, I am not overwhelmed by the loud noise, actually you can hear yourself very clearly when talking to the person across the table because there really is no noise besides quiet chit chatter. The service is consistent because there isn't a hierarchy amongst the staff. Managers in black suits will be taking orders, working along side staff who brings out food. The food is a very reasonable priced when each dim sum they produce is consist of quality ingredients and made with love and care. The best part of the food is the DESSERT. I never leave this place without trying a few of their dessert options. I always order the sesame rice ball with crushed peanuts and sugar and the sweet tofu soup. Their desserts are seasonal which is what I always look forward to. I hope they make their pan fried red bean squash cakes again in the spring time or their durian mochi. I LOVE Kirins. I usuallly love their food, presentation and for a Chinese restaurant, this New Westminster location is beautiful. I've constantly raved about this location, stating it was the best Chinese food in the city. Then I went a couple weeks ago for a charity dinner and did it suck. I was really looking forward to having a banquet style dinner and I don't know if it was because there was a lot of tables or it was just a random off night, but the food just wasn't spectacular. A few things I didn't like: dishes didn't come out piping hot, my deep fried milk barely had any milk inside, my crab leg was the size of my pinky! A few things that were good: the deep fried salad roll was quite delish although some complained of the lack of filling, the salt baked chicken was quite juicy, and the dessert, taro with tapioca soup was very rich and creamy. Anyways, I do intend of coming back here eventually, I do believe they are quite capable of 5 star Chinese cuisine and hopefully redeem themselves after my last dinner. read more

This is my second review of this restaurant. I come to this place at least once a month because it is very close to my house and my family members insist on coming here. The food quality is generally good. But the service is inconsistent. Many of their servers would not acknowledge me when I talk to them. They look at me with the "why are you bothering me" expression and walk away. I hope they read this and correct this problem. read more

This is one of my favourite dim sum spots in Vancouver area. The restaurant is large, with up-to-date decor, good service and really good food. The restaurant is usually busy, and often booked for functions and banquets for weekend dinner, so it's always wise to check for availability (as there's no other chinese restaurant in the area). They have some "special" dishes, including my favourite - salt & pepper deep fried chicken knee cartilage (sounds gross when written out this way, but absolutely delicious and fun to eat)! Their house-made BBQ pork (cha siu) was a little fatty, but well done. Also notable is the abundance of dessert choices on their dim sum menu - instead of just your egg tart and mango puddings, they have lots of other choices, including silken tofu with ginger syrup; pumpkin dumplings; and other items that are not readily available on the menus of other dim sum places. Pricing is a little more than some of the restos in Richmond, but considering the decor, service and dim sum choices, it's worth it. read more

2nd time around with a larger group and all Asians, we got a totally different treatment compared to my previous visit. We clocked in at 11am right when they opened and to my surprise there were groups lining up for the restaurant to open doors. We made a last minute reservation and it wouldn't have been an issue as the restaurant was only half full at 12. We got priority seating due to our reservation and the service was so good that it went from zero to five stars. The server offered to pour our tea, serve our noodles. I swear he's almost like our personal server at standby. But no, we didn't have him baby us. We did it ourselves. This was our company lunch and a few of my coworkers frequent the Kirin Group so they knew exactly what to order from the menu. That sped up the ordering process and eliminated my previous problem of not knowing what to order as my usual items aren't there. It was also fun to let someone else order for once. We had the following: -Sui Mai -Beef Brisket & Tendon with (Chan chuen) Noodle -Custard bun -Chicken bun -Lotus Leaf wrapped sticky rice (lo mai gai) -Rice roll with fish paste -Kirin's signature chow mein -Taro paste wrapped in seaweed (deep fried) Our table's favourites were the custard bun, sui mai and rice roll with fish paste. I guess the least favourite was the beef brisket & tendon with noodles since our group was not familar with this type of noodle and it lacked the rich flavouring from the sauce of the brisket. Personally, I didn't like the chicken bun. It was also tasteless and never really got minced chicken. You totally loose the texture of chicken once it's minced. I don't what it is with me, but I don't think I've ever been to New West without getting lost! So I come armed with a printout from Google maps AND my GPS and I STILL have to call for personalized directions. I got lost on the way home too which is a new low for me, but I digress... Free Starlight Casino parking and a stunning atmosphere once you're there. This is the most modern Kirin I've been to, great decor and bathrooms, a lovely bar area, tons of tables and options for private dining. Hardly sounds like a Chinese restaurant! Food and service were very good. I was with a group for dinner and shared a set menu - their website seems to be missing a few of the options we had so definitely ask in person. Very nice multi-course Chinese dinner: chinese cold appys to start (not one of my faves, but I generally don't care for this), shark fin soup (yum), lobster (so-so), fried rice (good), noodles (this was an unusual noodle dish that was really just noodles... looked super strange but tasted good), abalone and chinese mushrooms with veggies (excellent!), the BBQ duck with the puffy shrimp chips (excellent!) and another fish dish (very tasty but be warned... the head comes to you at the table separately!) Dessert was a selection of almond cookies, mango pudding squares and a cold soup. These were all great. Great dinner and since I love Kirin dim sum elsewhere, I'd definitely be interested in trying out this location now that I think I could get here again! read more

KIRIN restaurant used to be one of the best Chinese Reesturant in Vancouver, but definitely not anymore. After a wedding banquet I participated last night at their New Westminister branch I am totally sure about it. My daughter in law is a Philipino said it was one of the worst Chinese wedding food she has ever tasted. Really good food and service. It's a really nice looking restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised to see groups of Caucasians seated by themselves. My friend mentioned that the restaurant is very friendly and make it easy for everyone to order. I still wish they had carts or those little paper order sheets but I was still able to find everything I like (their chicken feet and egg tarts are DELICIOUS). Plus we were lucky and had a woman clearing for us who was smart and polite. And bonus: nice bathrooms! In a Chinese restaurant! Try it just for their Dyson hand dryer. Dim Sum is decent for an out of the way restaurant. This restaurant is located beside the Starlight Casino right beside a noodle place. Only pet peeve is that, there is no pre-printed items to ticked off what you want, you have to flip through the menu and order directly from the waiter so there is no way to see what you ordered. They could have missed items or pad the bill and there is no way to check. If you are going to the Queensborough Outlet Mall for shopping, this is a good place for lunch. read more

I've been to the Cambie Kirin and frequent the Richmond Kirin very often. This is my first time at this New West Kirin and boy was I surprised! Ample parking, new, elegant and modern interior design. They had flat screen tv in a lounge like area. It was just nice. Wait staff were attentive and were ready to refill the teas. Food came quickly and quality was great. Definitely one of the better Kirins in Greater Vancouver. I will be back...very soon. read more

I've been eating at Kirin since I was a kid, and since this location opened up, I've come here many times for dimsum as well as for dinner. Dim Sum: they have a lot more unique dishes as compared to other regular dimsum places, but they are also a lottt more expensive. Most of their generic dimsum dishes arn't amazingly better than other places, its more their specials that make it unique. They have a fish paste rice roll thing thats really good and I havnt really had anything like it anywhere else. We also order a shredded pork with preserved veggies with vermicelli in broth -- its $16 for a pretty big portion (it can feed 5 people 2 bowls probably) BUT its literally just noodles in broth with a BIT of duck on top..and its $16!! Their spareribs are also not impressive at all -- all fat and tendon, yuck. Dinner: Really high quality as it should be due to the price. They have more unique dishes and the portions are pretty big. This place has amazingly attentive and accommodating service. They really emphasize this. The decor is also beautiful and its a really nice place to take guests for a nice dinner. read more

Had lunch here on the way to Walmart nearby. Kirin is one of the best dim sum places in the city, we usually go to the Richmond location. As usual the food was quite good, the siew mei was really nice. The chicken boa was so-so, skin was good but the filling was so-so. We ordered a dry beef chow fun, it came on a bed of spinach which was weird, but at least I get to eat some veggies. It was OK, not as good as I have had in some greasy spoons, and not dry enough. I am giving them a 3 cause they should be a little better. The quality is still there, but getting a bit pricey. read more

Next to the Starlight Casino. So if you win... Go for dim sum. Parking was easy in the Casino parking lot. Then walked over to the restaurant. Newer restaurant with attractive modern decor. Look at the posted pictures. Service was prompt & effiecient. The food...was good but the Wugot(stuffed taro) was disappointing. I usually prefer a thick taro layer with only a litte stuffing, unless it is shrimp stuffing. They make it with a relatively thin layer of taro with lots of pork stuffing. Good if you like pork. I do not! The rest of the traditional dim sum items were better than average. While I would return, I would not make a special trip to New West just to dine here. read more

This place has kind of modern and rather clean interior than other Chinese restaurants. We had alaskan king crab. Legs part are steamed with garlic butter, knuckles are deep fried with very minimal spices. And last one is crab shell curry baked rice, mixed with some seafood and little veggies. No need to explain about the taste and freshness.... This is one of the most delicious things ever had. Price was about 38 per lb, and baked rice is additional 30. Guess 7 to 8 lb would be enough for 3 adults. Deducted 1 star since there is no side dish or even light dessert. ... read more

2nd time at Kirin and yes their waiters are well dressed dudes as Mark says. Had the dim sum everything was perfect. The place is new, clean and well priced. I especially enjoyed the deep fried minced fish in a bean curd roll with peatips and steamed in a rice roll....yum-yum. BBQ pork bun tro was a treasure....little dough and lots of filling. The dough was wonderfully light and not at all heavy or chewy. I'll be back. read more
